Let me get this straight now, smittys is in kreuz building, kreuz is in smittys building, is this a family fued or what, if i get a chance to go to lockhart, i think i will just go to blacks, plus i like side items with my bbq, and their meat looks good.
This Smitty's & Kreuz split was a Hatfield & McCoys situation, feudin' , Ms. Nina & grandson John won the fued. Rick & Don did their sister wrong & should have never split. That is why the family doesn't own the new Kreuz , the Cruz family does
The sides go good with pork loin bone In ribs from each end of the loin , not with beef , baby back ribs , spare ribs etc, in Kentucky we call those loin ends " ribs " , but they are not really ribs. If the bone is in they are called western ribs , bone out are called country ribs & both are good with the German beans , taters , kraut
I believe there may be a family fued between Kreuz market and Smittys, they are kin, but there is definitely some tension there, plus i am from the south, and i do not think good meat needs sauce, but it seems that people are asking for a bbq sauce at all of these places which makes me wonder why. I know northerners sauce everything, but they don't count, they'd put ketchup on pecan pie.
Edgar Black said folks from up north were buggin' the tar out of him for a sauce, I'm from the the south & I would have told them to go back up north & they could get bbq smoked meats with sauce, it does not need sauce
Shoulder clod is just chuck roast , basically hamburger meat when ground, over priced here at Kreuz & if folks want bbq sauce they will just get their order to go & put some on it at home, might as well give them some
Needing sauce on bbq beef ?, something is wrong, being a 60 yr old Irishman & family from rural S/E Kentucky, if we drive to Lexington, Ky. to a somewhat upscale steakhouse & I order a $ 50.00 -$ 75.00, 16-20 ounce choice/prime ribeye & they ask me if I want steak sauce like A-1 or so, I tell them if it needs steak sauce at that price after I taste it, I will send it back to the kitchen & tell them I ain't paying for that, I'll order a salad or something else
btw fellers at Black's , I would have went to McD's & got 2 McRib sandwiches instead of Kreuz, I don't know how the new owners are doing things( Cruz family)
Kreuz, 4.5 hrs. on a 15 lb. shoulder clod? Tough meat, no heavy smoke flavor, no me there, I want smoky & not a light gentle smoke, I actually prefer75 % hickory & 25% post oak
I'm just making an educated guess here by the way i see these bbq joints smoke their meats, and i would guess i'd be drawn to Black's bbq first, by the way they smoke their meats, and with the available side items, but i'd really need to do a taste test on em' all to see which one i preferred the most.
Thats yankees for ya, sauce everything, especially with ketchup, i live in rural kentucky, good meat does not need sauce, if i pay good money for a steak, and it needs steak sauce, i will send it back, and i will not be back, period.
Kreuz has new owners now, never eaten there yet, but when Rick & Don owned the place they cooked so fast it wasn't a gentle smoke, it was no smoke & tasted like it was baked, new owners BBQ has to be better cause it cannot be worse. Poor selection of sides, I know they are German heritage & so is my wife , but kraft, German tater salad & beans are not BBQ sides
The new Kreuz did not know that if folks want smoked bbq then put some smoke to it, not a gentle light smoke, might as well bake it in the oven, that must be why they sold out to non family, & I think if a 1000 customers wanted a fried baloney sandwich & the old timer wanted a fried ham then that is the only thing he would serve, just rubs me the wrong way & no disrespect as he is elder, I just wouldn't go there, I understand no sauce as good meat does not need
Message to the 2 fellers at Black's , to bad you didn't ask me about going to Kreuz then back to Black's , I could have told you not to waste your money at Kreuz's, unless you like meat with almost no smoke flavor & almost taste like the meat is baked, pitiful sides, taste & variety
I would go to Smitty's vs kreuz not only for the food , but for the ambiance of the older building & dining hall.
Kreuz, beef shoulder clod is chuck , basically hamburger meat that is not ground up , doesn't even compare to brisket

Edgar blackJr. looks just like his Pa , wow
Ms. Nina put a whipping on her brother's cooking , lol
Takes dedication to be a pit master. Thank you for a great bbq

That’s Shoulder Clod they’re slicing. Clod predates the Brisket craze & when done right (as they do here) it’s quite fine eating

Been to all three and all three would be best in most cities. There is not a clear winner but i usually go to kreuz due to parking lot size.

I do like the strong tasts of smoke, not gentle, i prefer hickory
About 90 % of folks like thick smoke, give your customers what they like & not what you alone like
Lockhart best #1Blacks , #2 Smittys , #3 Chislom trail , #4 Kreuz( before new owners , have not been there yet)
btw fellers at Black's , I would have went to McD's & got 2 McRib sandwiches instead of Kreuz, I don't know how the new owners are doing things( Cruz family)
Potatoes are awesome, but everything's a little overpriced at Kreuz.
Big John at smitty's has been eating the profits, lol, me to pal

Hey Texans.... Generally speaking, What is sausage made from.... Yes, PORK...!

Kreuz , beans, german taters, sauerkraut are all sides you eat with non smoked pork loin or pork chops , poor variety of side items
