Hi all, thank you so much for watching! If you want a bonus video this week, I did a livestream yesterday! The replay can be found on the Live tab on my channel if you’d like to join and paint along with me 🥰
Wow, that was definitely worth it! I have a friend who loves to go to estate sales, and once she clearly came across someone who had been an artist/crafter. She got a TON of great supplies, all unused.
Wow! This was a great Haul! You had some really great stuff there. You might actually have some discontinued colors int he sets too! That 'Van Gelder' Paper really speaks to me, because i'm Dutch. This Dutch company started in 1685. Around 1970, the company encompassed nearly half of the entire Dutch paper industry. They had six factories operating with 30 paper machines. At that time, the company employed over 6,500 people and produced approximately half a million tons of paper annually, including products like punch cards. The demand for paper significantly decreased with the rise of teleworking, which resulted in bankruptcy in 1981. Pretty sure Daler gave an ode to van Gelder there lol! That's a really cool piece of paper history right there! And also, I LOVE the books you got! I go to the second hand shop to buy books like that if I find them :D Impressionism and watercolor outside the lines look really cool! Also... I love the smell of books 😅
Thank you so much! I can't wait to test it all out and see the colours I have 🥰 And thank you so much for sharing this information about the Gelder paper - that is so interesting! It sounded like such a big company, what a shame it didn't make it but as you say - a very cool piece of history for sure 🤩 Hahaha I know what you mean about the smell of books, it feels quite nostalgic!!
This was really fun! What a haul! I got a set of 40 Neocolors on eBay, lightly used and missing 2 colors but about 1/3 of the price as new. I stalked ebay for weeks and it paid off.
Lovely collection of art supplies. I've obtained quite a few supplies from estate sales and vintage or antique shops and eBay. I got a block of Whatman paper on eBay unfortunately the sizing was disintegrated so paint did not flow. I made my own gelatin mix and re-sized it and that made it usable. It became practice paper. I love old and vintage art supplies.. ....and use them all in sketchbooks. Thanks for your video!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! That sounds great, what a good way to build up your supplies! I hadn't even thought about the paper sizing until I'd read some comments about it, I am a bit of a novice with different paper types! So it's great to know that you could make it usable with the gelatin, I'll keep that in mind 😊 thank you for sharing!
What a great haul! I have a massive collection of art magazines. They never get outdated really because of the tutorials and such. Lots of nice references, different artist styles etc. On a totally unrelated note: your hair is absolutely gorgeous and I'm so jelous 😅
Congrats to your great find! Just a note on the watercolour paper. Make sure to test it well beforehand as the sizing in watercolour paper can go off in time, resulting in weird textures and unreliable results. xx
Wow, what a great haul! Such a fun way to acquire supplies as well, even though you are at the mercy of the auction house. You really got your money's worth on that one.
Wow! The Albrecht Dürer and the Neocolors are worth around £135! Thanks for sharing, Katie. If possible can you briefly explain how your father finds these auctions? Thanks again 😊
I was so chuffed to see the Albrecht Durer pencils as they've been on my wishlist for a while! And yes of course! 🤗 He recommends a website called thesaleroom which has a lot of different auction houses in one place, and then searches various terms like 'art supplies' 'art materials' etc! You can search for things like gouache too but it often comes up with painting rather than gouache paint tubes. Then you can choose from there based on the photos and descriptions of each lot 😊 hope that helps!
@@KatieMoody that really helps! What’s even better than art supply shopping than I surprise?! Again, really enjoyed the video and thanks for pointing me in the auction direction 🥰
It was fun watching you go through that box with you Katie, I definitely think it was worth the money. It was helpful for you explaining the auction process. I’m sure many appreciated your advice and free books. To tell you the truth, I didn’t care for those art books at all! The magazines would be helpful and interesting to go through…. I think you lucked out with this box and your dad is a treasure!!❤
Thank you Kathy, I definitely think it was worth it and such a fun experience! I'm looking forward to sitting down with a cup of tea and having a good read through the magazines! 😄 He sure is a treasure 🥰
@@KatieMoody ….. my dad found me a book in the book store back in the ‘70’s about Tole Painting. He’s the one who introduced me to the world of decorative painting! Enjoy your cup of tea and relaxing with the magazines Katie 🥰. By the way my two youngest grandchildren are tea drinkers. Neither am I or their mom so I don’t know where they get it from. Jack is now 12 and Anna is 14 and they’ve been drinking it since they were young. Can’t figure it out!🥰
@@KatieMoody … oh that’s so funny! I though everyone in England drank tea, I thought it was the cure all for everything 😍. Yes, maybe it skipped a gene on my side. I know both my mother and father drank it and my two sisters but not me. One of my daughter’s likes it but she’s not the mother of my two grandkids that do. 😍
What a fun way of getting second hand art supplies 😄💖 I got an old set of derwent colored pencils from my grandma, and the tinn they come in looks just like the one you got the pastel pencils in 😊 Its so fun seeing what logos and branding brands have had in the past. Would love to see you test the pastel pencils in a video, have been curious about how they work compared to regular pastels 😊
Oh that's so wonderful you had a set from your grandma! I totally agree, I've always loved packaging and seeing the different graphics and how things have changed over the years. I'll be sure to add that idea to my videos list, thank you so much! ☺️
My favorites are the Dürer pencils and sticks, and the Neocolors. When you are ready to make your own sketchbooks, try Maru Goda's Domestika class Sketchbook Design and Binding. I learned things in this class that I haven't found on TH-cam. Finally, it's such a small world. I took an in-person class from Linda Kemp on painting with negative spaces a few years ago.
Oooh thank you so much for the tip! I didn’t realise she had a binding course, I love her work! And so wonderful that you took a course with Linda Kemp, love little coincidences like that! 🤗
Gosh this is such a great haul! With the gouache, even if it was dried up, you could cut open the tube and use it like a watercolour but you’ve really bagged a lot of stuff for really good value!
Thanks Colzo, that's such a good point! Definitely got lucky with these tubes with none dried out but will keep that in mind if (when 😆) I buy more gouache secondhand 😊
@@KatieMoody I had to do it with a tube of W&N gouache I bought from the range and it worked really well 🫶

Great haul. I never thought of auctions for art supplies. I definitely will look out for them. If you haven’t given away the watercolour or acrylic books would love to go into the draw. Great video 👍
According to my Jackson’s Paper Guide book (2021), in the 1750s “James Whatman invented wove paper at Turkey Mill, in Maidstone, Kent. … Wove paper was a much smoother, less irregular surface than laid papers, on which pigments tended to pool in the ridges of the texture….As well as wove paper benefitting the print industry, it was also an exciting development for watercolour artists, including JMW Turner. This was because it was surface sized with gelatine, making it incredibly strong and absorbent, and sufficiently robust to take wiping, scratching and scraping. Such subtractive techniques were not previously possible for watercolourists, and Turner became a master of working in such a way. Other notable artists who favored working with Whatman paper included John Sell Cotman, William Blake and Thomas Gainsborough. … Although Whatman watercolour paper is no longer available, St Cuthbert’s Mill in Somerset today produces Millford paper, which is specifically designed to mimic the unique characteristics of Whatman paper.”
Oh this is so interesting, thank you so very much for sharing and taking the time to write this out! Fascinating! And this paper guide you referenced sounds fantastic too 😍
I have the first ever Neocolor II 10-set (it was passed down to me from family) and they came in tins, so the red box was probably from the shop or the previous owner, or perhaps sold individually for people who wanted to build their own collections
Oooh that’s good info, thank you! I did wonder as the ends of the boxes just have one colour name, but it was all curated so well as a set! Thanks for sharing 🤗 how wonderful you have the first ever 10-set! 🤩
I hope that the watercolour paper is not so old that it went bad. The sizing in the paper can „expire“. Don’t be discouraged if your painting is not going as wanted. Lindsay The FrugalCrafter on TH-cam has a video what to do with such paper and not let it go to waste. Have fun with your new supplies! 😊
Definitely, I was being super conservative with my estimates especially with the sketch pads! I struggled to find like-for-like but I agree, I do think it's worth more! Thank you so much for watching 🥰
Hi Candis & Hayley!
