My only experience with a GM Engine is my 2003 Hummer H2 with the 6 Liter V8 and after 265,000 miles it is STILL Running well. Used only synthetic oil and regular changes. I didn’t need brakes until over 165,000 miles and transmission rebuild until 177,000 miles. Bought it new, still driving great. When someone questions the build quality of a GM Vehicle, I can only reply, jump in for a nice ride!
That’s awesome! I have a Hummer H2 review video that I need to make public soon. They’re fun trucks, I’m glad you’re enjoying it even after all those years.
I've had my 2021 GMC with the 3.0 diesel for 3-1/2 years with no problems and very happy with it. It's averaged 23 mpg since owning which most of the miles are in town. I'd say 75% in town and 25% highway since owning it.
I’m on my third vehicle with the 5.3, had a 2012 Silverado without issues, wife has a Tahoe and I have a Sierra now. It’s a good engine and honestly doesn’t leave you really wanting for power. I’ve also owned a 3.5 EB, 3.4l in tundra, and a 3.0 first gen duramax. They’ve all been good, I think my favorite may have been the duramax, if you don’t mind the fuss of diesel. It just pulled so hard. I can’t say it was “fun”, but it always had power when I needed it.
I'm on my 2nd 3.0, after having a few 5.3s, and a 6.2. I'll trade losing a drag race to a 6.2, because that's the only thing it does better. Love these 3.0 motors!
Yeah, you can’t get around the extra 115hp in a drag race lol. But I agree, as much as I love a 6.2, with all the current lifter issues I’d rather get 25mpg+ in a beautiful sounding mini diesel too!
I've had two 3.0 Duramax's. Owned pretty much every 1/2 out there, it's by far my favorite. Gets damn near 30 MPG's on the freeway consistantly. Both have also been trouble free so far. It would be cool if they updated it with compound turbos.
That’s awesome, I’m glad to hear it’s been reliable. And 30mpg in a full size truck is no joke. I can’t believe I’m saying this but if I were to buy a modern Silverado I don’t think it would be a V8 unless it was going to be head and cam swapped as a minimum build.
I own the 3.0. Passing at highway speeds is a bit of a challenge at times. The engine does pick up a bit more performance after around 3,000 miles though I’ve noticed but not enough. It’s a really great highway cruiser and incredible fuel mileage … but it’s no 6.2L or the 5.3L when you’re looking to pass
I own a 23 LZO with max tow & I think it has as much passing power as the 13 6.2 I used to own. You really feel the torque when you kick it down at highway speed. The 6.2 would definitely beat it off the line though. Why I really like it is it pulls my camper better than that 6.2 did & when I unhook the camper it gets 27 mpg
My 23’ GMC sierra with the LZ0 and maxtow so it has the 3.73 gears. It will walk away from my 5.3. For some reason the 1-2 shift on my LZ0 is very lazy most the time.
Contrary to my earlier comment I have owned a 2019 Sierra Denali, 21 Sierra at4, one of the first 12 2022 Denali ultimates delivered in the country. My wife had a 19 Sierra elevation, 2021 Sierra Denali, 22 Yukon Denali ultimates. Only issues I really had was my 19 Sierra had the warble at high speeds and the wife’s Yukon had leaking windows. No major engine problems.
My 21 custom trailboss with the 6.2 pulls hard out of the hole and at any roll speed. A muffler delete sure helped with the sound certainly a must do !
the Stock muffler also weighs alot surprisingly. Switching it out for something more free flow is win win win. Sounds better, goes better, trucks weighs less.
Got the 6.2 in my 21 rst and same thing it pulls hard at all speeds he shoulda put it it tow mode that's where ya get super responsive and gear holding also hold the tsc button for 10 seconds and it shuts off the esc also and keep a tight grip cause she's gonna be squirrelly😂
I've had the 6.2 in two different trucks now, one in my 17 Silverado LTZ Z71 (8spd) and now in my 19 GMC Sierra Denali (10spd) and with only the transmission difference between the two, the GMC is far better since the old 8spd didn't want to hold together very well, the 10spd has been bullet proof thus far with 68k miles on it currently.
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 The 8spd had some serious issues as the one I had blew up after only 18k miles and I got the truck new. Thankfully the warranty took full responsibility for the issue along with the 2 months of rental service they had to pay while they had my truck. I'm just glad the new 10spd is as bullet proof as it is along with the powerhouse 6.2L to go along with it. Love that engine, really sings with the Corsa exhaust I have on it.
I own a 2023 3.0. Had many other gassers and diesels. Want a "fast" truck (for some reason - SMH)? Just go get a 3.5 twin turbo . . . or a cybertruck. But, what's the point? My truck hauls stuff; that's its job.
Absolutely agree, but it’s still fun to know which one might be the fastest in a drag race haha. Every 3.5TT EB I’ve tested has been in the 5’s with or without a launch. 😬😮
True trucks are not supposed to be fast . If you want to have the fastest stock truck I agree Tesla cyber beast /Ford raptor R/ram Trx/ Hummer ev/Rivian /silverado EV / F150 Lightning ev etc… would be the faster ones . Tesla cyber beast being the fastest I believe guys have ran high 10’s in the 1/4 mile at a drag strip . 6.8 in the 1/8 mile
I'll take my 3.0 D inline 6 any day. I'm getting over 26 miles to the gallon on the current tank @ 2/3 hwy / 1/3 city driving. And when I need to tow, no problem at 495 ft. lbs. of torque!
Good test ! I had a 5.3 in 2007 which I hated as it shifted down at the site of a small hill . Diesels rule ! I just wish GM had interior as nice as Ram and Side boxes like Rambox.
@windycitywarrior71 Besides the Denali trim, GM has the cheapest interior hands down. Not to mention less features as well ,when compared to a Ram and Ford. I mean, their display is like 2 inches on the dash.
Shoot the true advantage of that 3.0 turbo diesel is the fuel economy. This weekend I was was driving backroads in the boonies and was getting 32.2 mpg over 150 miles of distance going 60. Yes it was fairly flat but still that is the most fuel efficient vehicle I have ever owned. And I have a Sierra so it's not as aerodynamic as the Silverado is which in testing had a couple of more mpg. My average mpg over 60,000 miles in mixed driving is 24.8. I have zero complaints. It's a great engine for my needs.
@@chancehallas9370 that a boy i gotta 24 with 2.7 i traded my 2018 in on it the 2.7 is surprising i didnt like it until i drove it and the drive sold me lol may not be a 5.3 but the afm if different on the 2.7s no lifters n shit to worry about 2.7s do the afm from the 3 phase camshaft..... but only time will tell its early yet lol
That’s awesome!! I would imagine the elevation doesn’t affect it a lot, like an NA engine. I have a 3.0 ZR2 video to make public very soon, I can imagine how much fun you’re having with yours!
Have a '16 ltz with the 6.2 @ 180k miles. Slight lift on a mid-travel Dirt King/Deaver/King Shocks kit and on 315/70R17's. Stay ahead of oil changes and trans services, only run 93 octane. DFM still active. Hope she goes the distance! Love this truck. Even with the bigger tires, highway mileage is much better than expected but I didn't reflash the ecu for the larger tires so I don't know exactly. City driving took an obvious bigger mileage hit but this has been a great truck for me.
As many have pointed out, I didn’t buy my truck to win any drag races. 0-60 times are what EV sellers and adopters all focus on too. I couldn’t care less about 0-60 times. That being said, I am of the age where I love the sound of a V8 and for some reason GM engineers decided to make the Silverado sound like a passenger car. Not wanting to spend an arm and leg for a “cat-back” exhaust I decided to simply replace my muffler with a Borla Pro-XS which allows me to hear the exhaust but is not obnoxiously loud. Now I have a non turbocharged V8 truck that sounds good, hauls stuff when I need to and allows me to get to my favorite hunting and fishing spots. The GM diesel is nice, but I talked to GM engineer and he cautioned me about service costs and finding a capable available mechanic when the time comes. Any turbocharged engine has an extra (or a couple) costly failure point in my mind. My 2021 5.3L Silverado has the AFM/DFM delete from the factory due to the chip shortage and my 8 speed transmission was one built with the mods GM made to address the failure points they had on the early 8 speeds. Just hoping the lifters have a long life without the AFM/DFM. My 03 5.3 is still going strong with 340K miles so I hope this ‘21 is at least half as dependable.
That’s absolutely understandable! It sounds like you really lucked out on your specific 2021, I hope it continues to be a pleasant ownership experience! Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.
‘09 Sierra SLT 6.0 is the best I have owned. Had ‘08 5.3, also have ‘15 5.3, ‘19 6.2 Tahoe. The L76 with AFM disabled has reached 224,000 with only issues being some oil leaks. It also pulls right beside my 6.2.
That’s awesome, those 6.0 were sweet! I had a friend who put a junk yard 6.0 LQ9 into a mid 90’s Silverado and it held up to a pro charger, cam, and full bolt ons just fine at least for a few years.
Awesome info. Makes me cringe to see an engine be floor pedaled, as I'm an old fart now. Was it actually the case that the 3.0 was far from red line when naturally shifting as opposed to the the gas versions? Just picked my 24' 3.0 today. Damn it's smooth.
I've had 3 6.2's. 2011, 2015 max tow and now a 2024 Trailboss. Only complaint is that there is next to zero aftermarket tuning options for GM's stupid Global B computer system. Custom tunes are the way to go and this is the first truck in many years not to be tuned. It really wakes up the 6.2! My max tow was 4.9 0-60 ( best run)
Interesting topic. I believe TurboMax, Duramax Diesel, and the Ecotec V8’s have now become just place holders in the Chevrolet Silverado line up. The Silverado non-1500 models offer much better performance and economy than any Silverado 1500 line in 2025. I took delivery in August of the Silverado RST replacing my 2020 duramax and have not given it a second thought. I tow a boat on the weekends and performance is night and day versus the old truck and operating cost is 2/3 less to run. Plus the crew cab bed is six feet and opens up with the mid-gate to 10'-10" capacity. And for a truck with a 9k lb "dry" weight it stll can pull a 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. The OTD price was the same as 1500 RST duramax next to it on the showroom floor. The engine options for 2025 1500's are weak compared to the 2025 Silverado non- badged 1500 line up. Plus, standard super cruise with towing is just icing on the cake for long road tripping. It seems you missed a good opportunity to include all the Silverado power train options in your comparison for 2025.
I really think GM has a great lineup of engines, despite early technical issues. To be fair, I feel the same way about Ford. I own, btw, a 2024 Silverado 1500 Turbomax WT, Double Cab. And I love it.
Good job. You should have tried with traction control and stabilitrak disabled. V8 versions are restricted on the launch with all of the nannies enabled
I’m no owner or expert on these trucks, but I did turn off regular traction control for each run. But with 4wd auto on every run these trucks don’t make enough low end torque to break loose the tires.
I test drove a 5.3l and a 6.2l the 5.3 felt anemic revved alot but felt slow and under powered I bought the 6.2 to replace my 3.5l eco boost f150 and really like the new truck it feels like what you should get for the high price of a newer truck mine is used with 44,000 miles
Ive owned both 5.3 and 6.2 chevys. When you do a brake launch you cant just hold the brake and mash the gas. The point in a brake launch is to tighten up the driveline and get the rpms a little higher so you’re in the power band. You did it wrong and thats why you couldnt get the brake to hold. Next time, hold the brake down firmly and slowly and gently press the gas until you get to about 2500 rpm then as you release the brake, at the same time mash the gas
The 5.3 and 6.2 engines with DFM are plagued with lifter problems. So far the turbo 2.7 and 3.0 Duramax have proven to be far more reliable that the 8 cylinder engines.
I own a 2018 Silverado 1500 High Country with the 6.2L. Looking to upgrade to a new Chevy but can’t decide between another 6.2L and a 3.0L. Good video but doesn’t make my decision easier! Wish the 3.0 was closer to the 6.2
3.42 is not a "final gear ratio", it is a "rear axle ratio". Final gear ratio is what you get when you multiply transmission gear ratio by rear axle; so with an 8 speed you get 8 final gear ratios.
Regardless of how much fun this video is- and it is really fun- I am left asking "What's the point"? How many Chevy 1500 truck owners use their trucks for drag racing? And for those folks who do use their trucks for drag racing, I want to ask "Why in the world would you do that"? Surely drag racing a Chevy Corvette would be a whole lot more fun than drag racing a Chevy 1500 truck. I have a 2020 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L and I haul hay, gravel, horses, and whatever. I also use it as a daily driver. We live up in the high mountains of northern New Mexico at 7,600 feet, and the 5.3 has way more power than I ever use. If there is some reason that it is important for me to know if my truck is1/10th of a second faster or slower than the other Silverado 1500 engines from 0-60 mph , please send a comment and let me know what that reason is. I would love to learn why that makes any difference in enjoying a Chevy Silverado1500.
Haha very good point. There’s probably no truly useful or life changing reason to know the outcome of this video, other than it’s fun and why not. 😅🤷♂️
It’s a Dragy GPS box I bought for about $150 several years ago, and it connects to their free app. I’ve probably used it over 600x by this point. 10/10 recommend! Thanks for watching.
Thanks! I was actually worried 11m for this year’s video would be too long, but I wanted to include enough context for each vehicle since once it’s filmed I forget a lot of the vehicle peripheral specifics lol. 😅
You’re absolutely right! The low end V8 torque just doesn’t hold compared to the turbo engines. Even the crazy torquey 3.5TT ecoboost holds a full torque converter break rev before doing around a 5.5 true time 0-60.
@@tylermacconnell217 -you are a special kind of stupid aren't ya? Let me know when your smart enough to compare the 2.7 and 3.0 to the 5.3 and 6.2 in durability and longevity.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 No worries, the original 3L Duramax with engine code LM2 was rated at 277hp/460ftlbs, the second version 3L Duramax with engine code LZ0 is rated at 305hp/495ftlbs.
What,s going on with G M ? , Ford,s 3.5 tt v6 smokes all these engines , i cant believe the 5.3 (which is being discontinued ) only has 355 hp , while the Ford 3.5 v6 makes 400 hp and 500 torque , wake up G M !
I have a 2021 f150 4x4 5.0, 3.73 gears. Wife has a 2017 Yukon Denali 4x4 6.2 3.23 gears. I really can’t tell which is quicker, they are pretty much dead even in power…. But, the Yukon is better on fuel by 1.5 mpg. If you could get the Yukon with 3.73s or 4.10s, It would completely smoke my 5.0!!
Please ALWAYS show the door jamb stickers when reviewing trucks. Viewers always want to know the capacities of trucks in various configurations and for some reason reviewers rarely show this important info.
That’s a great suggestion! I always show a picture of the payload and wheel size sticker when making a full review video, but I overlooked that in this 0-60 focused video.
If you’re talking about my comment on the 3.0, it might have actually been an accentuated feeling due to the torque peak and tranny gearing and then immediate power drop with RPM and less aggressive gearing in second gear. I don’t quite remember, hopefully an owner can comment on this and add better insight! Thanks for watching!!
Or watergate or EGR or whatever this mini diesels have when you let off the accelerator, you can’t hear the turbo noises quite well on this new gen LZ0. 😅🤷♂️
My wife and I tried to get the Sierra 1590 Duramax but it was just too expensive lol that’s okay though. We loved it and it was beyond smooth and comfy.
The ram with the new hurricane engine high output does 0 to 60 and 4.3 seconds so Chevy's got a lot of catching up to do considering Dodge and Ford have much quicker options.
I think it will prove to be a solid power plant, much like the Ford's 2.7 Ecoboost, which is their volume seller. The TurboMax is overbuilt and was designed from the ground up to be turbo charged. If they offered it with the 10 speed, it would be my top choice.
@@iuyozx My company buys Ford's. We have several 2.7 and 3.5 eccoboost as well as the 5.0. They will not buy anymore eccoboost F150's because they have been very unreliable as compared to the 5.0 engine. Almost ALL of the 2.7 and 3.5 have suffered from either head gasket, turbo failures, cracked exhaust manifolds, oil or coolant to turbo leaks and transmission failures(10 speed auto). Our mechanic is a Ford guy and said no more.
other thank exhaust note the 2.7 does everything better than the 5.3, 5.3 (and 6.2) both suffer from lifer failure issues, something the 2.7 doesnt have to worry about
I think at sea level and on a sticky track the 5.3 would have done a lot better. I don’t remember what it did last year, but I was surprised to see it in the 8’s. I also filmed a regular cab standard bed 2025 WT with the turbo max, that one was quick. I’ll post the quick impromptu review soon.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 yeahh idk I feel like the new body design are outdated already. Compared to the other truck brands the Chevy needs a new face lift.
I don't get the 0 to 60 test. It's a truck not a race car. Do a proper test for what a truck do best towing, payload, stuff like that. Why are people doing dumb test on wrong vehicles. Why don't you test the towing capacity of a Corvette? See which travel trailer it can tow. Ridiculous !
That’s just what I have to work with. 😅 85% of the country is lucky that they get to experience nearly the full potential power of their engines. Thanks for watching!

An interesting note though. The dealer is probably being cheap and running regular gas in them and that drops about 10% power from the turbos.
I can’t get 22-23 mix driving in my 24 ZR2 with the duramax. This is in Colorado as well. I have zero regrets picking this engine.

Sweet testing/review as always. I’m a GM fan but if you can get them love to see the F150 2.7 vs the Ford Ranger with the 2.7 👍
Thanks!! I’ll probably try to do something like that down the road once the 2025s start coming in. Great suggestion!!
and don't forget to tell something about Fords belt in oil for oil pump, if that thing is breaking, engine is dead, who says that is good?
@@gasauto1675 the 3.0 diesel uses a wet belt too. Really poor decision on GM's part. Not sure why they don't just use a good quality chain.
Ford 2.7 - beats em all
Have a '16 ltz with the 6.2 @ 180k miles.
I have a 00 Z71 5.3 with 99K. It should last me the rest of my life. Like the old 283, not very powerful, but very reliable.
Great video keep making more comparisons all pick up trucks and cars keep it coming. You can even do SUVs for fun.
I’ll keep those other ideas in mind! 😉
There is just no replacement for displacement. Period. Plus that 6.2 sounds the best by far.
So does blaming the white house for gas prices, can't wait until ot stops with trump as president when the blame won't hit him
Dam, loved that converted bus towing the 4wd in during the 2.7 flogging.
I had a friend who put a junk yard 6.0 LQ9 into a mid 90’s Silverado and it held up to a pro charger, cam, and full bolt ons just fine at least for a few years.
the gears are making the biggest difference in my option
Not as much when using the 10 speed auto.
Thanks for sharing your insight! I didn’t know you couldn’t HP tuners these newest model year trucks??
Would be cool to throw the Colorado into this test!
I have a year old video of a 2.7 Colorado vs. a 2.7 Silverado!! 😉
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 I'd like to see some towing videos with these trucks if possible.
I really think GM has a great lineup of engines, despite early technical issues. To be fair, I feel the same way about Ford. I own, btw, a 2024 Silverado 1500 Turbomax WT, Double Cab. And I love it.
I’m glad you’re loving your TurboMax, I’m always been impressed by those. I’ll make public my TrailBoss video with one soon.
I’m glad you’re enjoying your 6.2! How do you like it compared to the Ecoboost?
So far? Bro it's been like a week 😅

its only 1 second slower but gets like double the fuel mileage, seems like a no brainer
3.42 is not a "final gear ratio", it is a "rear axle ratio". Final gear ratio is what you get when you multiply transmission gear ratio by rear axle; so with an 8 speed you get 8 final gear ratios.
Good catch, thanks for saying this and adding context! I don’t even remember saying gear haha.

Thanks! I was actually worried 11m for this year’s video would be too long, but I wanted to include enough context for each vehicle since once it’s filmed I forget a lot of the vehicle peripheral specifics lol. 😅
You don’t have to pedal to the floor to brake boost
You’re absolutely right! The low end V8 torque just doesn’t hold compared to the turbo engines. Even the crazy torquey 3.5TT ecoboost holds a full torque converter break rev before doing around a 5.5 true time 0-60.
It's not how fast they are, it's how long they can last. Give me the V-8 regardless of how fast it is against the turbo motors.
So by that logic you are expecting a Chevy V8 gas engine to outlast a V8 Duramax diesel just because it has a turbo?
