Bought a used 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 with a 3.0 diesel in September. Haven’t done a ton of towing with it yet, but I’ve gotten some crazy fuel mileage (according to the computer) on some of my longer trips. Best number so far is 35.8 mpg!

My family and I tow a travel trailer that weighs about 6k lbs loaded and we took it about 1k miles recently…bad winds up hill all sorts of stuff and we still averaged about 12mpg. When conditions were more ideal 14+ towing. And still plenty of power going up hill. Absolutely great buy if you’re in the market.
When I bought my 6.6 Duramax, it was getting around 13-14mpg until it had a few thousand miles on it. Then it was easy to get around 19-21. So even with both trucks not run in, I’d still invalidate the test until both of them are.
It would be interesting to measure the amount of DEF used as well by both trucks. It would also be interesting to add another 3-4,000 pounds in the trailer to put the 1500 closer to its towing limit and determine if the LD would perform as well.
Ive learned when it comes to 1/2 ton vs heavy duty trucks. Half tons are always easier to drive more comfortable, better off road better turning radius. Buy enough truck, but don't buy way to much either. The heavy duty trucks will hold up better to abuse especially the solid axle fords but if you can get by with the 1/2 ton without going past 75 percent of its payload or towing capacity go that route. If you will go over 75% often you need a bigger truck.

For $80,000? No thank you. I dislike that I can’t buy old fashioned high sulphur diesel for my first gen Ram, but the new truck price will just make me hang on to my 1994. Yeah, it’s 30 years old, but on a recent trip from LA to Turlock, I got 24 mpg.
If you are towing over 10k get the 6.6 but the biggest difference is when you’re NOT towing the AT4X 3.0 will get 24-28 mpg and drives SO much nicer/softer . Pick your poison but my 24 Chevy ZR2 Bison 3.0 is the best truck I have owned and tows 4-5K lbs with ease .
One of my company trucks has that 3.0 turd in it. All it does is make you wish you had a diesel engine. About six months ago I purchased the same 2500 did you have the trail boss LT in the lighter gray, already have 39,000 miles on it because i average about 80,000 miles a year. Zero issues pulls by 36 foot flatbed with a John Deere 450g dozer just fine. Even though that combination exceeds the door sticker by about 8000 pounds it's no problem for the trail boss
Ultimately it comes down to the driver. Some people (me) just like the power and capabilities of a heavy duty truck. We also like to doing our own maintenance and don't mind the small amount of extra work that goes into maintaining it.
Should have done a loop without trailers for a baseline comparison. For towing that was not a good comparison. The 1/2 ton was towing 50% of its capacity, and the 2500 was only at 25%. It should have had a 9,000 lb trailer behind it.

Honestly the only bad part if having the timing chain and oil pump belt on the back of the engine, so every 150-200k you have to pull the cab or engine to do maintenance, maybe you can do it with pulling the trans, still if you plan on putting a lot of miles on the truck its something to think about.
Nice video. Those are awesome trailers. That’s a generator compartment on the outside Case. My two cents with having a similar trailer is the 1500 is not enough truck if you’re towing any kind of distance and/or higher speeds and/or poor road conditions. Those enclosed trailers push a 1500 around and also will bounce you to death on uneven roads and bridge approaches. The fuel mileage was impressive but so was the 2500s.
Shoulda' got a Chevy 2500 with 8 foot bed ! You can close tailgate on motorcycles & some ATV's you're carrying, & much better for 5th wheel hauling - less likely to crash hitch into back of cab & load applied ahead of rear axle.
Was considering buying a 3.0 duramax for my wife and her horse trailer. Followed a couple facebook pages and no way. Those things have way more issues than anything else in the 1/2 ton segment mainly due to emissions and after treatment.

My truck gives no indication of regen except high idle or smells, sometimes slightly higher engine temp and of course poor indicated economy (14.8mpg vs 21mpg empty).

During fuel efficiency test having a truck right behind you helps with aerodynamics and improves fuel efficiency of that truck... Better to keep side by side or more distance between them...
Love the video. I think there is a switch on the hitch that turns on a full flow of fuel. Because my 3500 dually gets 16-17 mpg unlaiden, but as soon as I hook up to a trailer I get 8-10 mpg.😂
Anyone else yelling at the screen at the 12:15 mark for Andre to get out the passing lane as he is holding up vehicles behind him for a photo shoot? Should of put the middle truck in the right lane and Andre in the center.
Shocking, I almost feel out of my chair when I saw your gas station sign. $2.69 for regular, I haven’t seen gas that cheap since the 90s. I’m paying $3.99 for reg and $4.69 for diesel right now and that is a 5 year low for me.
A while ago you did a drive showing the impact side view mirrors have on the mileage, and larger mirrors add at least 1mpg. Considering the HD truck has the bigger mirrors fuel mileage might be closer than you think between the two trucks.
The HD truck is heavier, taller, has more surface area, has larger tires and has twice as much power… But sure, it’s probably those pesky mirrors reducing its fuel economy. 😂
@@PerschMotorsports and I still remember how Ford got roasted over the 1997 aero truck. Folks said it wasn’t a real truck because of its rounded aerodynamic design.

Real test would have been to drive normally around the loop then the last 5 miles pull a trailer. An overwhelmingly amount of people buying these will never tow anything in them.
Thank you for the video. Why would you tow an empty trailer? Should mabe have a load. The real test in Colorado or Wyoming is pulling a trailer in a crosswind. I did it for 2500 miles!
Apples to oranges. Two different tools. One is a half ton with half the engine displacement and the other a 3/4 ton, what would you expect? They each were made to do completely different jobs. Both very nice trucks. Just depends on what you need them to do.
If youre buying a diesel for towing, why wouldnt you ginish the job right and install a 5th wheel? Not only is your towing capacity higher, its also fsr mor atable of a pull and you dont have to stare up at the sky while driving. Gooseneck is by far superior
Considering the investment a person has in a race car or a restoration , plus tools and spare parts for the race car , there is no way I'm going to trust a half ton for towing .
HD only… so many more options when it comes to towing. If you buy a half ton, you’re just limited to the capabilities of that truck. And I always find something heavier to tow or haul.
I buy disposable rubber gloves from Costco and keep them in the truck and use them when I'm filling up my diesel so that way I don't get that stink on my hands
Wait until the HD has had 2pil changes, diesels in particularly tend to run a thick break in oil and it takes 2 changes to get most of changed out. I am surprised that the HD still had that much a difference with identical trailers.
Your deductions sound a bit silly. Reason for the higher fuel consumption in the HD is it's heavier and the engine displacement is more than double. The efficiency would become more evident and go in the HD's favour had they both towed something that would have been at the 1500's upper limit.
It won’t likely be the aluminum block and head that will fail if engineered properly. Metallurgy is an exact science as long as you know what you’re doing. The problem is GM does things because they are expedient, not because they are right. Besides, the high pressure fuel pump, transmission, def system, and other hardware are more likely to fail first leaving you less concerned about the block and head.
165ft/lbs per litre on the 3.0 duramax vs 159ft/lbs per litre on the 2.7 turbo max…..think id choose the 2.7 if a 1500 platform was what i wanted. No def. Cheaper maintenance.
The smaller truck needs weight added to equal the weight of the 2500... So both Motors are pulling the same weight. The bigger engine will always be more efficient under load
@AkioWasRight right! I could do 20mpg on an easy 140 mile loop... however, if regen hits, I've got 8-11 mpg for 10-30 minutes, killing any hopes of more than 18mpg...
those pumps to fill up semis are called speed pumps thats why they pump fast other wise it would take along time to fill up,if you go to the other lanes you will see semis using 2 pumps, 1 for each tank main and cant remember what the other is called

2. Mention how much DEF is used
3. Drive minimum 55mph and maximum 70mph speed, ideally 65mph
Great video!
They bought new Chevy's. Shouldn't that tell you everything?
Shocking, I almost feel out of my chair when I saw your gas station sign. $2.69 for regular, I haven’t seen gas that cheap since the 90s. I’m paying $3.99 for reg and $4.69 for diesel right now and that is a 5 year low for me.
I have a VW Touareg 3L TDI and I use 3 tanks of fuel Nova Scotia to West Coast Florida 2200 miles plus it can tow 7700 lbs.
A while ago you did a drive showing the impact side view mirrors have on the mileage, and larger mirrors add at least 1mpg. Considering the HD truck has the bigger mirrors fuel mileage might be closer than you think between the two trucks.
The HD truck is heavier, taller, has more surface area, has larger tires and has twice as much power…
But sure, it’s probably those pesky mirrors reducing its fuel economy. 😂
Subtract 1 mpg.
@@deantatlow4021 the fact they make every new truck like a brick wall is mind boggling
@@PerschMotorsports and I still remember how Ford got roasted over the 1997 aero truck. Folks said it wasn’t a real truck because of its rounded aerodynamic design.
5:27 ufo lol
Great test would be the 1500 Duramax vs the same 1500 with the 6.2 gas engine.
Nice video guys!
Glad you enjoyed it
Silverado 1500 trail boss with duramax. Cheaper than the sierra, and has everything you need for thousands cheaper.
You can get an 1500 at4 for cheaper as well.
I have a 2020 custom trailboss 5.3 6 spd and i towed a 8x8x20 dual axle 4.5k lbs going on mostly flat ground i got 11.3 but the diesel got me beat by far but im too nervous for long term maintenance to go diesel, my 5.3 does great for what I need it for, I rarely tow I haul frequently tho.
This like Saturday morning cartoons for men .
True that😉
Real test would have been to drive normally around the loop then the last 5 miles pull a trailer. An overwhelmingly amount of people buying these will never tow anything in them.
Thank you for the video. Why would you tow an empty trailer? Should mabe have a load. The real test in Colorado or Wyoming is pulling a trailer in a crosswind. I did it for 2500 miles!
2500 miles? Colorado is much bigger than I thought
Let's finally answer this question with 2 brand new trucks that aren't even broken in yet...
They have one.
Considering the investment a person has in a race car or a restoration , plus tools and spare parts for the race car , there is no way I'm going to trust a half ton for towing .
My biggest nope is that the 3.0L duramax has a rubber belt inside the engine in an oil environment driving the oil pump.
Let's see that Ike with these two......loaded trailers to.
HD only… so many more options when it comes to towing. If you buy a half ton, you’re just limited to the capabilities of that truck. And I always find something heavier to tow or haul.
Truck in the front is taking all the headwind away from the 2nd truck haha
I buy disposable rubber gloves from Costco and keep them in the truck and use them when I'm filling up my diesel so that way I don't get that stink on my hands
Be curious what the mileage would be with both trucks at max weight. I'd bet the HD wouldn't see as large of a percentage drop as the 1/2 ton.
I think if you're debating between a 1500 and a 2500, it would be the 3.0 Duramax vs the 6.6 Gas engine. (My current situation)
Get the 3.0l and run it hard, You'll have less emmision issues when compared to big engine barely running all the time.
Now put the ½ ton in a trailer and tow it with the 2500 to see if it will use less fuel than driving both of them the same distance would.
Aluminum block and heads on a diesel seems like scary choice. At least for the high mileage you would expect to get from one
Better than the 5.7 tundra!
I made the mistake of topping off at the big nozzle once. Never again 😅😅😅!!
It’s not that kind of comparison.
Trailers aren’t identical.
very curious how much drag that top exhaust fan and how it impacts efficiency.
?
@@garysarratt1 one of the trailers had an air conditioner unit on the roof which increases the frontal area/drag of the trailer.
@@BassRacerx Oh, that. Sorry, I was thinking about the trucks.
Regen makes short tests unreliable.
@AkioWasRight right! I could do 20mpg on an easy 140 mile loop... however, if regen hits, I've got 8-11 mpg for 10-30 minutes, killing any hopes of more than 18mpg...
@@SuperdutyExplorer Soot load also matters. If you're getting close to a regen, that will also lower MPG.
those pumps to fill up semis are called speed pumps thats why they pump fast other wise it would take along time to fill up,if you go to the other lanes you will see semis using 2 pumps, 1 for each tank main and cant remember what the other is called
@@bradbaraniuk4085 Primary and secondary…..
Interesting seeing the 1/2ton is the worse spec for towing with all the extra weight with the AEV gear and offroad suspension.
Probably should have switched trailers at the halfway point since the trailers were slightly different in profile and 500 pounds different in weight.
Towing with the max offroad version instead of the one designed for towing.
