    I went to a jazz club with Foley and a few other musicians one night (late 80s). It was jam session night which meant any musicians in the audience could get picked to come on stage and play with the house band. Well, Foley went up and made the bass players ax sound like a completely different instrument. The bass player got mad and took his bass back. We laughed about that for years! Columbus Ohio, Cleveland Avenue, Linden area. And Keith Staten was with us lol!

    Foleys touch is outstanding, incredible dynamics and feel, and don't even start on how good the tone of his bass is.....

    The sax player is the promoter, their actual sax player couldn't make the gig. This guy just jumped in, and I think he did pretty well considering.

      No way, is that true? I mean Zhenya is a fucking god on his own right so it makes sense, but it all seems so well rehearsed and coordinated.

    chris dave started out playing here in houston at the high school for performing and visual arts, made the STATE Jazz ensemble his freshman year...he played alot of local houston area gospel gigs with people such as Kim Burrell, but then he left houston and became probably the greatest drummer ever!!!

    • @AC_Bikes_400
      @AC_Bikes_400 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He's in a league of his own. That is, nobody can play a single one of his difficult records. Buddy Rich and Max Roach are also impossible to replicate, but I think those three are alone in that.
      He's definitely the greatest alive, no question.

    At 8:44 Chris Dave plays a snare roll fill that sounds exactly like the response to the leader's call in the Kecak ceremony of Balinese monks (see the film Baraka for an epic presentation of this: v=aGXcnWUqV-Y)

    @simensolvang07 They were NT1s. Unfortunately I can't remember any of the settings I used to mix the audio. I probably boosted the bass massively and put everything through Vintage Warmer. Luckily the sound in the venue was great in the first place (it's a small venue). Good luck with your recordings.

    The way they jump in and out of polirhythms and diff time signatures is insane, each do them seperately and then gel, they are like musical calculators O_O

    • @WilliamSlaght
      @WilliamSlaght 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can count 4 on all of them till the tune starts too. But why? That's my question. No one normal can notice this.

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can count any way you like, it's just gonna be in a different relation to the pulse. In indian music you get this used a lot, like going at one and a half-speed, a third of the speed, three times the original speed while keeping the original pulse etc, switching back and forth with time signatures while keeping the original pulse intact; the original pulse becomes part of the polyrhythm. I won't resolve on every 1 every bar, but it will eventually. You can also play only on off beats, not touching the downbeat during X bars, while not playing free.

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "No one normal can notice this" wowowow dude we're all students of the music here you're not that skilled. I can keep the pulse the entire time of this video... and? I still can't play this shit. LOL

    @takminister Thanks for the info! What kind of rode mics did you use? (I have a K2 I am about to get modded.) I was blown away by the bass tone inparticular. It sounded so live which is rare. What kind of compressor did you use? Ratio? Slow attack fast release? What kind of eq? was it broad sweeps? Across what frequencies? I am starting to do more live recording myself and am planing on using 2 mic setups as well. If you dont want to give away any secrets I understand. Thanks again!

    @cssource no doubt about it, they're all playin jazz. The sax player definitely seems a little lost towards the end there, he gets left out of the dialogue between Foley and Dave. He sure isn't playin any bad notes though, and he has no problem blowin over Foley and Dave while there off in their own world, at least during the head. So overall I'd say he's killin it.

    @dimsim49 Chris is the leader of the band. Sax player was ready to stop, but Chris wanted to hear more, and he wanted to hear it a certain way. The sax player is very sensitive. When Chris digs in, so does he. He never grand stands like many unseasoned musicians can do. Much respect to Chris b/c after yelling "Play" to the saxophonist, he starts wailing. THAT made him play.
