The thing most people don't notice about Chris Dave is that he isn't just "playing drums" he's producing acoustic audio. If you close your eyes and listen to his playing it takes on a completely different character. Its like a cross between DJ music and Tony Williams.
Exactly. his concept is bigger than just "drumming" he creates an aura with his playing. he's sonic in everything he does. breaking all the rules of rythym while maintaining them at the same time. it's ground breaking really.the whole concept of over laying two songs in two completly different tempos/time signatures is almost done in the spirit of a DJ or live turn table remixing. there are many drummers who are at the same level as Chris Dave when it comes to technical Drumming. but the creative mind that he has is what enhances his sound and separates him from others. crazy. I could write a whole paper on him lol. All this complexity could lead simpler minded ones that he is incapable of playing simple let me remind the naysayers that this is the same Chris Dave that was THE drummer on Adele's "21" and Maxwell's BLACKsummer'snight. you know the "Pretty Wings" album lol. he has mastered the basic concepts of drummer so well that he's able to do the most ballsiest and avante garde drumming on stage.
I didn't know he was on 21. But your points are well taken. The end of the video indicates that there is an album on the way. I would love to see these concepts reflected in more of a compositional approach. I think that could help the naysayers refocus musically.
jryuwah He's not all of 21 (just to clarify if others don't know). Just on; Don't You Remember, He Won't Go, One And Only, and Love Song. Those, however, are clearly the best grooves of the whole album. But with Pino and James Poyser rounding out the rhythm section on those, how could they not be?
Matt O'Donnell I stand corrected! yeah having Pino, James, and Chris on a track together is basically the equivalent of play xbox live with your friends cause that's how in synch they are with each other! lol! so much chemistry beween him and Pino especially!
For all of you ignorant people criticizing this beautiful music. Just cuz there is no direct backbeat on 2 and 4 does not mean there is no structure. Its called counting. Challenging yourself instead of playing the same thing night after night. Or maybe practice with a freaking metronome.
+Patrick Heath For this type of playing, you gotta feel the larger sections. If you count, you're kinda screwed. "Nefertiti" is a hard Miles tune as is, and they go town town with it and paint it red
+Patrick Heath yeah, but it becomes, as you said, instinctual and internal. You do it without thinking at that point. Jean Michel Pilc has this thing of taping out a ride beat while talking regular to people. You ain't counting at that point, you are grooving.
+pickinstone That's what I'm talking about internal metranome. it's instinct that has to be developed and practiced. I play much avant garde style jazz myself which is all about free form playing. But it still has a groove to it and that's what I'm saying
Chris Brock , not free i think .,NEFERTITI melody, seems they are interlocked in a poly relation cus shit it tight together w the horn, im tryin to figure this out for a long time, i stil cant figure that relation, can anybody help ?
"Nefertiti' was written by Wayne Shorter, even though it was first recorded and released on Miles Davis 1968 album by the same name, 'Nefertiti'. So even though the world got to know the tune via a Miles Davis record, the tune is actually Shorter's.
I was expecting to see kids with Travis Barker ambitions bashing a real musician on this page, but I came to find that jazz is alive and well. Chris Dave is one of the most progressive musicians out there as far as tamber and rhythmic innovation. His arrangements of stand-bys, and composition is unparalleled by percussionists, and if you're going to talk trash about something you don't understand, just remember that every genre in today's music culture has developed through the culmination of Jazz-Hip-Hop fusion. When you're at home looking up to Joey Jordison (I did it too), just remember before you write terrible comments, that the Chris Daves of the world are the people our idols look up to.
You have any resources to back up your pretty bold blanket statement that every genre in today's music culture has developed from jazz and hip hop? Jazz I see (hip-hop is a no) but even jazz developed it's roots from the blues.
+Xavier Leeds lmao i've watched so many chris dave, robert glasper, d'angelo related vids in the past couple days and i come across you like 80% of the time
Just nice when a set of guys are so cosy playing together, that within that they have the freedom to team off and also play apart, within that overall togetherness.. & all come back when they desire.. but regardless of choices, be it key, tempo, phrasing holds the partnerships together.. cool shit.
For those who think he can't play straight and simple stuff : playing polyrhythm requires strict counting and precision, in other words Chris Dave knows every "one" the whole time, and he recorded great drum tracks with Adele too , which he strictly sticked with the groove.
as an engineer when u get live stems theyre usually brutally bad, if I had to guess you'd be shocked you can even tell whats he playing if you had heard the source material
Yes it is so dry it does sound like playing paper on a dining table. But it is intentional I think. This guy is not one to use a natural open kit, or toms, or crashes etc. He does not want his kit to sound like a drum kit, and that's his thing. There, a 5 year reply.
its like a reggae groove style mixed with old school jazz, or just jazz, with the guitar and bass reminding us where we are today in music. I loved it personally
Both are great great drummers but Chris is more innovator his sound is very different to other drummers, Eduardo sounds like a combination between jojo mayer and dave weckl
I think jazz can be an wide field for many, especially mainstream, etc. I am amazed at the way artists have sought to exist in the day and age of electronic music, modernization and the plethora of space age music out here. I think it comes from the notion of what art is and is not, and it is left pretty much up to the maker of the music, as well as the consumer, as to what will be "taken" as "art." I think, this is not new, per se, but the limits of what "we, the consumer " will "take" as art and "purchase " is so being pushed to the limits and the market will only bear so much. Because, the music industry is a Business and when you do not "get that" into your head, you think it's fairy tale big money and cars and women. It is so much a headstrong world that I was not ready for it and I see why there are schools for music, like schools for technology and business, etc. Because it can be a job, as such, and to have knowledge and ability is as important as talent, or luck. Be prepared. Peace
For the record, if someone says "this reminds me of X" and you say "no it doesn't" then you've just outed yourself as a mind reader and we'll have to get our witch-burning logs ready.
I hate to be the guy that asks about gear, but what are those rides he is using? They look like Raw Dry Rides or Fierce Rides but could also be some prototypes, i guess..
+Tachot123 I think most of them are AA Raw Rides which are out of production but you can find around from time to time. Definitely custom made for him at this point.
Chops, and ability, are off the charts. The drum sound, though is horribly thin, lacks the bottom punch that every drummer needs, and hence does no justice to the playing. The engineers and producers of this performance sell the artist short by not providing the sonic richness that the playing provides.
+Leatherband64 There's all kinds of stuff sprinkled in here, but they're basically jamming to Slum Village "Conant Gardens". It's a J Dilla production.
This is so ahead of its time it's sick

First time I enjoyed Adele, thanks man, crazy we have to call those groovy cats "side men"

True. But you still gotta hold down the beat. Use that instinctual internal metronome

Got it
Hardest job in music = being this bass player!
Epic as always Chris
You mean the drummer job is
pretty easy bassline actually
@@hahanice1038 Chris dave is playing completely free time over it, and the bassists has to stay perfectly in time, that's what's hard.
@@SneakySeriyuu Haha. Nice :)

shout out to the band for knowing where the one is haha
Yes, that was out there!!
You gotta need a solid bass player.
Truly in line with the greats. Papa Jo Jones, Blakey, Roach, Williams, Elvin, Erskine. Pushing the boundaries of Jazz
The sax is playing Wayne Shorter's 'Nefertiti', between 2:40 - 4:00.
EgyptianMinor Isn't Nefertiti a Miles Davis original?

Yes 😁
Gotta love that special sound he has.
Chris Dave on Wheel of Fortune: I'd like to buy a 1.
The normal mind can't comprehend what's taking place. Chris Dave takes music to a whole different realm.
Man this dude is so out the box! Keep it going!!
That was HIGH art...genius. Beautiful stuff. Mastery.
just ridiculous..love all the different textures he uses.
I love that they just snuck Conant Gardens in around 2:00 - you can always tell how much love Chris has for Dilla.
Also comes from the James Brown song, "Give it Up Or Turnit A Loose"!
I was expecting to see kids with Travis Barker ambitions bashing a real musician on this page, but I came to find that jazz is alive and well.

Matt Mahoney Travis Barker ambition lmfao
thinking jazz is dead is reserved for people who watch la la land for the soundtrack
Dont be a tool

referring to adele as a great musican ?
+B Mashaqbeh ummm she IS a great musician (or singer if that's what you prefer)
Not just Adele, but Maxwell, Kenny Garrett, D'Angelo, Mint Condition and Anderson Paak
why would it automatically mean "polyrhythm" if his rhythm sounds complicated? hes not playing polyrhythms, its just syncopation
Who said he can't play straight and simple stuff?
I really dig what these guys are doing. they have great structure. It's different. Its jazz. Chris is amazing. It's funky also.
Gracefully done! I love the creativity
Daddy Dave killing it like always
This is the best version of Mood Swings by Mike Stern I've ever heard!!!!!!
damn i am happy questlove mentioned him in some interview back then
since that time i follow chris daves music and love it!
When Questlove mentions a drummer that makes him wary of his skills it's best to check out said drummer
link to interview?
Sharkey just drop Amazing Grace on top of everything?
Dino Zaigirdar Yes he did.
Bring it on home - Sam Cooke
Yo that guitar was beautiful though even though I’m a drummer, yes everybody was killing it but goddamn that shit made me cry
Why did the engineer choose to make the leader's instrument sound like hitting paper?
+Xolin11 I know this comment is a year old but paper? Damn that's a good one. lol

yea dude, so disappointing
thanks for posting ....very talented genius...really enjoyed this ...
Obviously some of you guys truly haven't heard Chris Dave.......go find out what this means
You should post the names of the players at least!!
Guitar player is ridiculously good.
its like a reggae groove style mixed with old school jazz, or just jazz, with the guitar and bass reminding us where we are today in music. I loved it personally
handsome grooves - yes indeed!
Finally proper quality with this set!
this is the tone for hi-hat i was looking for damn good :!!
Truly unique.
Chris Dave and Eduardo Mcgregor are like the future of drumming.. both have been focusing more on electronic sounds
Both are great great drummers but Chris is more innovator his sound is very different to other drummers, Eduardo sounds like a combination between jojo mayer and dave weckl
Sorry but, Eduardo is not in the same category as Daddy. Just a different breed, he's untouchable, Eduardo is just...good.
Chris dave should NEVER be put in the same category as anyone else. He is an alien.
good grief that amazing grace..lawdt
"Nefertiti" out of fucking nowhere.
BEATIFUL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can anyone tell me what his stack consists of?
Great writing
And then everything else!
Isaiah Sharkey on Amazing Grace!
What are the two song they play? One is Nefertiti by Miles, but then the next tune is what?
Delfeayo's Dilemma
Dude plays like someone did him wrong. Love it.
reminds me a lot of Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. Pretty cool.
+TheChilliestBro No, it doesn't. That had structure you could feel. This doesn't (except for the backbeat parts).

Cyan Light, literally just subbed to you and I find you on a Chris Dave video. Good shit !
That was one fast "Mood Swings" cover!
Wow!!
new album coming soon!!!!! shiiiiiiiiii

CHRIS DADDY DAVE

At 1:49 they start a new groove. Where's it from?
From ''SlumVillage - Conant Garden''

Yeah! I couldn't agree more :)
What are those spiral cymbals?
Oh. Mike Stern. Great tune.
guitar center means all sound comes from a guitar amp? the drums sounds like it.
Whats the name of song????
Black Codes From the Underground. Wynton Marsalis. 5:00 in or so...
Chris started using toms???
some one know his hi hat and snare drum?

Near the right side of the kit, there's a flat cymbal. What's that cymbal called?
Sabian Chopper
the section from 1:50 is fuckin great in its simplicity, you just focus on the bass and drums
Someone can explain me how to do what Chris is doing here?
Literally playing two songs at the same time and oscillating between the two. Its the most fascinating and incredible thing I’ve ever seen.

he is one of if not THE last great innovator of drumming.
