For people critiquing the soundtrack, remember that Rare did not develop the Genesis version of the game, and as a result, the Genesis version's music arranger, Hikoshi Hashimoto, had to learn the music by ear. Also, don't forget that on top of that, audio tools were very limited (no Audacity, Winamp, etc. as well as no VGM files to slow down/isolate tracks), and music had to actually be programmed in assembly programming. In addition, the publishers could have very well rushed the developers to complete the port as quickly as possible, giving the sound designer little time to make additions to the soundtrack. For what it's worth, I'd say this is a pretty good note-for-note conversion of the NES soundtrack.

I mean, if I ordered a meal at my favorite restaurant, and the food showed up and it was all bland and mushy, and the waiter said, "bear in mind the cook is feeling depressed today because his wife left him"... I would understand, but it would still be a lousy meal. Acknowledging the circumstances that resulted in something turning out badly doesn't mean it didn't turn out badly. In the case of this soundtrack - I enjoy the sound of the Genesis and I like hearing this port's versions of those NES tunes, but there are some tracks where it really does feel like something's missing. The instruments sound richer but there's places where this actually works against the track because it makes gaps in the arrangement more apparent. This is a tough thing with a port like this. The Genesis version has to almost wholly clone the NES version, or else it's not the same game, but then the result is a game that doesn't feel like what we'd expect of a Genesis title. Bear in mind the cook is feeling depressed today...

I'm pretty sure the port was rushed. I tried playing the genesis version for a while after getting used to the nes game, and the gameplay just felt a bit... off. Both hit detection, collision detection and movement all feel slightly wrong, and after hours of playing I just couldn't adapt it. It's a pity because I actually prefer the soundtrack of the genesis version in a weird way.
Truly! When you hear the title screen theme reeving up, it gives you such a burst of nostalgia and action energy! You can't not look forward to the game behind that title screen with such an awesome track.

Then 1993 came came Battlemaniacs for the SNES + a Sega Master System port from Brazil. Also 1993 came Battletoads & Double Dragon for NES, Sega Genesis, SNES, & Game Boy. Then Finally, in 1994 came the Battletoads Arcade which was never ported to consoles nor PC.
Awesome!! This soundtrack is so dope and I MUCH prefer most tunes here on Mega Drive over the NES originals. "Karnath's Lair" for instance (@15:57) which turned out phenomenal. Visually the game also has many improvements (higher res; better graphics; added parallax scrollings...) but sadly from what I played the gameplay doesn't seemed spot on and some cutscenes and sound FX were missing. A damn shame as the game is quite unique (such a mixture of genres) and the Mega Drive version should have easily been the definitive one but it doesn't seem to be... or is it? BTW I wonder if the music conversion was done by David Wise or by someone @Arc System Works instead, which was the team that handled the Mega Drive port. Anyway TH-cam rises to better places anytime our dear Dustin starts uploading Mega Drive soundtracks again. Keep up the good work mate! 👍

I'm not going to go deep into the details about it, but TH-cam is probably going to heavily damage this channel 4 months from now. You won't be able to comment, like, sub, or even receive notifs about his channel (And maybe do worse things too). I have notified him about it in his most recent video (he even hearted the comment). If you want to take the time to see it, go ahead and most likely cringe at TH-cam's stupid decisions. I even recommended a new video sharing site to him there.

It's a solid set of arrangements, but I wish they did more with it since it's Genesis. They're pretty much straight-up transcriptions with little additional flourishes or additions, so they end up sounding a little empty or awkward. Doesn't quite reach its potential, but still pretty enjoyable.
ben owen I suggest you to try and listen to Surf City on both consoles. There is just something magic about 8 bit sound. 8 bit games should have been left to the 8 bit generation consoles. Yamaha’s Sound cards is my weapon of choice when it comes to retro PCs. However this has nothing to do with the chip, but people. There are real 16 bit games that take full advantage of the Yamaha chip such as Earthworm Jim, Comix Zone, Dune II, Road Rash 3, Streets of Rage II to name a few.

The lead jumps around between the low notes and high notes, I think it was more staccato on the NES, and that having the notes sustain longer on the Genesis version makes the transitions more awkward. Not sure, though.
Ahh... Arc system works, started off doing ports for Double dragon (master system) sailor moon (mega drive) and this. Not a bad start to a company that would later on make the guilty gear games. Also I heard that Hikoshi Hashimoto did this soundtrack.

@ben owen Yeah, it could just be that Aki Hata became a freelancer after she left Konami instead of working for Treasure specifically like Norio Hanzawa did, so she could have worked on a lot of stuff outside of Treasure as well; it shouldn't be too surprising then if that was the case ;)
This is neat! I like the the instrumentation of the NES version, because I have a fondness for that RareWare sound, but Battletoads does not have a great soundtrack. This version does a good job at sounding more melodic, and I like that. Rat Race still makes me want to wake up screaming in the middle of the night only to realize that I'd never fallen asleep to begin with, but that's mostly because it's the worst stage in the game; the song is fine. But thank you for sharing! I sure didn't want to drag myself all the way through this game a second time, though to be fair, it's mostly just the vehicle stages that are so frustrating.
The first stage was poorly done. I thought the second stage looked much nicer than NES. The toads should have been larger and had more impact punches and better sound effects.

If I'm gonna be honest here, this sounds kind-of phoned-in. The Genesis is capable of so much better. It's got some good percussion and some of the rhythm, but most of it sounds like it needs a facelift.
