I just started playing this game a couple days ago, lol. This is SUCH a good game. Thank goodness it starts to slow down when too many sprites appear on the screen. It's really hard for me to track the bullet hell that is thrown at me. I seriously can't stop thinking about this game right now. It's Best of Best Quality. =D

I love how the devs were so proud of their sound engine that they made 10 tunes that exist only to be listened to in the sound test

Compsing for a game usually means you end up with a lot of material that doesnt get used. So it makes sense.

Or they were filler tracks until the real ones were made or they just had leftover tracks because they weren't what the director/producer wanted and decided to include access to them anyway.
This happens with all kinds of game content that used to be made into neat unlockables that now they either ignore or nickel and dime you for.

I remember playing this game as a kid and being amazed at the graphics and music, but none of my friends understood what the big deal was. It's great that the Internet lets all these classics finally get their due AND puts people in touch with other like-minded fans, no matter how obscure their passions are.

    • @Krystalmyth

Your friends had no depth perception I think. lol I know some people literally don't have certain brain neurons to perceive parallax scrolling for example, or layers in sound. This is why pop music is so strong, mumble rap is so popular, and why highly compressed audio sounds fine for people. There are people that couldn't tell the difference between this game and something like Darius Twin.

I can't beleive the size of some games recently. It's now the norm to be a 40GB or even a 20GB update in the case of 343's Master Chief collection. What happened to the simplicity of putting in a game cartridge/CD and then pressing power?

    • @ChalkTeacher

Cinematic experience and eyecandy happened. There's a lot of games where most of the space is wasted on FMV or huge textures.

"Shooter" in 1992: An epic masterpiece in which love and care is poured into every minute detail of the game design; everything from art direction, graphics, responsive controls, level design, enemy placement, rewarding difficulty and soundtrack. Just the music itself is so good people 25 years in the future go to youtube to enjoy it.
"Shooter" in 2017: Yet another bloody generic fps for the nth time which, despite a multi million budget, fails to have any heart and soul in it whatsoever. It will look hyperrealistic, have uneccessary cinematics, more or less play itself unless you put in on the artificially high, badly designed difficulty, and it'll have a completely bland OST you'll remember nothing from once you turn the game off. Oh, and don't forget to buy the 40$ season pass so you can access all the cut content!

+Mcall A lot of games did sound like shit, you are right. But it was more of the musicians not knowing how to utilize the chips. Many games like castlevania, megaman, gradius, hell most konami and capcom games had excellent sounding music and sound. Don't blame that on the sound chips. I had a typo in my original statement. I meant to say "Makes me miss the days when the consoles sounded *different*.

MD/Genesis sound hardware is not too easy to get great results out of but when that FM synth and PSG noise generator come together in just the right way in the skilled hands of Technosoft, Yuzo Koshiro or Hitoshi Sakimoto, it's a thing of beauty, producing some of the best chip tunes of all time. @@ps123fan They have better arrangements, but as all music on SNES is run through samples, it barely makes its own music sadly. They're all prerecorded somewhere else and then run through the carts sound processor. Which yeah allowed for robust music in FFVI and Chrono Trigger, but the SNES couldn't even play a single one of these tracks. Which is insane if you think about it. It doesn't have the synthesizer to make these sounds. It existed primarily for SFX, though some early games used it smartly for music like Darius Twin and Super Castlevania. Which is why those games sounded sharper than later SNES games (and more gamey I suppose). Super Castlevania mixed the sampled sound with the sfx chip which made the music cut out whenever you cast a whip but it was worth it lol.

Still in shock that this monumental game with one of the BEST soundtracks on the Genesis is on the Sega Genesis Mini 2.
Other games that got recognized that are REALLY GOOD is Alien Soldier, Crusader of Centy, Ranger X, Ristar, Sonic 3d Blast, BOTH Ecco the Dolphin and its sequel (which use the Sega CD versions), Night Striker (really rare arcade game), and the remaster of one of the system's first titles, Space Harrier 2, with the music sounding like the original arcade game.

    Brief reviews:
    0:01 - That's how you introduce a sidescrolling shooter!
0:32 - Sick nasty elevator beats
1:42 - Very "Green Hill Zone" feel, peppy and vibrant
7:16 - "...what have I gotten myself into"
7:58 - DragonForce made a boss theme and it kicks ass
10:24 - Great use of syncopation, very chill
    13:27 - Short and spicy
    13:58 - We're only 14 minutes in, and it's already this good?!
    15:00 - A song to vibe to
17:37 - Writing essays at the last minute be like
19:18 - Like "Evil Destroyer", but more punchy, more focus on drums
20:51 - I can honestly almost see this as a Cowboy Bebop background song
    22:56 - Synth Jaws
    23:43 - Badass boss fight (machine-gun drums)
24:56 - The Pokémon battle theme you didn't know you needed
27:23 - Best melody and drum use of any the boss fights
    28:38 - Good intermission
29:17 - Tense, but still a water level theme through and through
31:37 - Great buildups, but never drops like you want it to
32:56 - The Pokémon legendary theme you didn't know you needed
35:05 - Unique boss theme + spook = happy ears
35:53 - This one explicitly has "metal" in the name, I don't know what else you could expect
    40:37 - Industrial plus sci-fi equals this I guess
41:22 - ...Luigi's Mansion, is that you? (42:14) I guess not, just sick drops here.
45:14 - Most intimidating boss music
46:25 - "You do not belong here"
48:20 - There's a reason this is the final boss theme. Simply masterful.
49:58 - Bittersweet, but more sweet than bitter
51:13 - The feeling of going to bed after a really good day
53:24 - Bittersweet, but more bitter than sweet
56:12 - You earned the happy ending, champ
    57:22 -

I remember considering this game for a purchase when I was 13 years old, the decision process took about half a year. Then my parents gave me the money after I lobbied for further three months. Then I finally bought it. I spend genuine moments playing it on my mega drive, manifesting the 90s experience. I realized already back then this game was a true gem.
Today I am 40 and I am in the decision process to buy a 50 k vintage sports car. A major part of this decision process is that I listen to this soundtrack and imagine in which car this sound would kick most. The music actually leads me to the car... So great! A 70s car with a 90s fusion transformed into 2021. Lets rock!
