They were mostly just hard drinking slobs with top jobs! In fact Les would often be heard slagging off the 'poms' (Brits) as was the culture at the time in Australia. The joke is really that it is so close to reality that it embarrassed a lot of high ranking Australians and brought to public attention the terrible slobs who represented us (Aussies) overseas in the political sphere. Anyway the whole act is a parody of the uncomfortable truth about powerful morons!

The problem I've found with American reactions videos is that their brains are slow at catching up . When all the folk are laughing their heads off in the audience... Uncle Sam is overthinking and missing the point .
