I was at a store today and i took the Z5C in my hands, the rear panel is definitely glass, it's just that they covered the smooth surface of the glass with that matt finish. Also, if you look on ebay, you'll have the replacement part which states something like "made of glass, handle with care".
true water proof phones are designed to use in water, cost a ton with shlt specs, sony cant spend all the cash to make it true water proof, slim and nice looking at the same time, so they simply changed their marketing phrase.
Rokupix Ruiqi i know it just sucks, my girlfriend always waits for the next compact. But now she will wait to then next, she owns a Z5C so she'll survive another year. I'll will be getting th xz :)
the z5c is great, after some updates things got alot better. The phone can get a little hot after heavy usage, but no overheating. The SD 810 seems to work pretty nice, only thing i can complain about is that the z3c had way better battery life. Still not bad though.
I heard many said after recording video for 5-10 minutes the devices just get overheat and auto shut down, without saving the video. That's awful! And have you received Android 6 updates?
I went to an Xperia X Compact after my Moto G3 2015 camera crapped out after a couple of drops. I re-flashed out of the box to UK version and now the fingerprint scanner is working just fine. If you want something small that doesn't suck and isn't apple, this is your only choice really. Only real problem is that it's too damn shiny and slippery (which can be fixed with a skin). I held back on buying this until it dropped to 400 bucks, which is a hell of a lot more reasonable than the 500 dollar crack induced price tag initially.
the x compact seems to be way faster and you can definitely see that when you he opens up the apps. the xompact is blazing fast. the only drawback is that its not water resistance thats about it. people complaining about the 650 have little to no fucking clue about the 650. It's really not a midrange chipset and has outperformed the 820. This is what happens when you have a bunch of people pretending to know tech
it outperformed the 820 phones due to the great software optimization from sony. Software optimization is very important and for some reason they have the 650 nailed down.
Not so sure they have the 650 "nailed down" as their is a reason 4K was redacted from the x and the x compact. The Sony Xperia x and x compact have been overheating both on the charging cable as well the 4K and 1080p video recording. It literally shuts the phone down. That's not what I call optimization of their hardware and software. However I do believe if they didn't push the line out so fast they were definitely close to nailing it. The sd650 soc is a highly capable silicon chip but the rush in the race to sell these phones have left the highly competitive android market lacking in common sense and quality. It's more than capable. They just need to go back to quality software optimization matched with decent hardware and craftsmanship
sean dennis they have experience with the x Line so I doubt its gonna have the same issues. I have faith because Sony true flagship are the one shown at ifa
Don't get me wrong I love Sony devices. I've had everything from the z1, z2, z3, and the z5premium. I love all of em. I just know that the chip in the x had 4k recording when it came out however heat and shut down issues forced Sony to redact 4k recording from its specifications. And with the same chip on the x compact and it not having 4k and 4k still not returned to the feature line of the x tells me that the chip and sonys "optimization" for that chip must have a few bugs still pending
I can tell one thing, that Z5 compact is the last small screen flagship from SONY! X compact is just a smaller phone with no flagship features at all, so I would rather buy Z5C instead! Considering the market nowadays, it's normal that few companies launch smaller flagship phones, but I hope Apple and SONY could maintain this option for people who love smaller phones like me!
Dekun Liu hey. But the CPU from the xcompact is better than the z5 compact? Did you habe the z5 compact? How is it with the nougat update? How is the camera? Is that true, the z5 compact is getting really hot when you look videos or begin the camera app? Sorry for my English. Greetings from Italy
Agreed. Mine cracked in several places and I'm never rough with my phones. Hoping the X has different construction. Looks the same from the video unfortunately.
Yeah I got a big crack on the back of mine too from a slight drop that wouldn't have damaged any other phone I've owned. Wanted to warranty it but was advised against due to Sony high rejection rate. Considering replacing it myself but worried I'll mess up the waterproofing. X Compact actually seems like it might be better since it seems to be a plastic body rather than glass
It is plastic but it sucks since it gets scratched EASILY. I've only had mine for a day now, i've put it on a wooden table only to lift it up afterwards and see it got slight scratches on the back. What the hell, i expect it to get scratched from concrete, anything that's rough, not freaking wood. I also tried to scratch it with my nail, i have succeeded that too, although you have to look closely to see that scratch. If you ask me, the plastic would've been tons better with a matte finish rather than this glossy crap. I just hope i won't scratch it any worse, in a few days i should get the back and front stickers. The phone is otherwise nice, but damn fragile.
It is kind of weird they called it "compact." Sony made me feel like Compact phones have the same specs as high end phones. This one seems more like what other people call a "mini" since this phone takes a hit on specs.
However, it is quite unnormal that the compact version comes way later than the corresponding non-compact Version. I guess, Sony took a look at Apples Iphone SE strategy. The SE is also not as powerful as the Iphone 6s models in all terms, so Sony copied this strategy and took the Camera and USB Port from the newest model, and the rest from older ones.
real test is z3 compact way more better no miss touch for the screen, when u put underwater the speaker is work like no water in it but unfotunately z5 compact takes time to adapt to get better speaker and sometimes z5 compact weird behave like restart himself but i guess just software problem., and z5 compact not covered the usb charging port and thats makes the user worried about how long z5 compact dry before user can charge the device
Thanks for the review! I've been using the z5 since 2017 and I loved it but its not as hardy as most phones. Finally broke the screen and the batt warped from overheating. It doesn't perform as good when I had both replaced and now I'm eyeing the x compact. There doesn't seem much difference except the waterproofing....
Thank you! I was waiting for such a review. I especially wondered wheter the better camera and the better accumulator loading technology can compensate the worse design and the non-IP-watersave compared to the Z5 Compact. It makes me sad that the X Compact has a bad CPU compared to nowadays CPUs, but compared to the Z5 Compact, it seems just on the same level. If in 2 months the prices will be the same (which I think, because the X Compact after all is only middle class and the Z5 Compact is getting older), I guess I would more likely take the X Compact. It is a very close head-to-head race, but I think a longer living battery will be more important than a full water resistance. Also, the Camera's white-detection just looks more accurate on the X Compact.
well, the x is the compact of the x.. not the xz thus x compact and not xz compact.. probably see an xz# compact next year.. btw x did manage to survive a few minutes of submerged
Steven Khoo Yeah, I know that. Yet I was a bit disappointed to see that the newest compact phone is a compact version of an older phone that was not even high end when it was released. However, I am gonna get it, as my current phone is near to death in all aspects (camera is 3.2 MP, CPU is 1GHz Single Core, 500MB Ram, etc.). I guess the X Compact is really good, but there still is a tear in my face that says "It could have been better".
Yeah, but let me explain, this seems to be a redo of 2013, when Sony released the ZR (essentially the father of compacts but wasnt advertised as so) . The ZR was released sometime after the original Z but a month or two before the Z1 compact. Now, though, they may have stuck the X internals to get rid of the SD650 but it is a capable chip. However I wont be surprised of a private press by sony to launch an XZ compact pretty soon as they have been listening to the public lately..
Steven Khoo Hmm then it is a hard decision on buying or not-buying. I guess I am gonna wait a month or two until the price of the X Compact dropped to 300-350 and then before buying I will check wheter the rumours are getting more intense. Thanks for the heads up :)
certainly, however I would like to apologize in advance if I raise too much hope in you.. regardless, waiting about a few weeks to a month isn't gonna be a bad deal too.. Remember the X price was drop by 100USD in just one week since it went on sale in the USA from 550 to 450 if I recalled. so certainly, if it was me I would still wait... more so if this happens to be a redo of 2013 then getting and x compact when an XZ compact is (might or might not be the case this time though) imminent can seriously screw our feelings.. will keep in touch with you if an XZ compact comes out though.. Haha..
Because they sound the same. At least i don't think the Z5C is any different, the X compact i have now sounds equally good to the previous Z3C, no difference at all.
but heard many issues on z5c, especially overheat, slow apps, auto shut down etc. Do you know are these commonly seen or just happen to some of the users?
why did you use SUPER VIVID on the X ? and X-REALITY on the Z5 ? The super vivid display looked better but I guess its because of the vivid mode :( dude ...
I'm thinking about buying an Sony compact phone but I want a powerful one. The z5 is powerful but it is a year old. The x is new but with an worse chip. Which should I buy?
The z5 compact is better the chip on the x compact has been known to overheat and shut the phone down periodically. Otherwise ur getting a better premium phone with the z5 all around. The camera difference is negligible however the loss of waterproof speakers will add to the speaker quality of the x compact. Those r the trade offs.
The z5c has issues with getting quite warm but I've never had mine shut off from being too hot. The 810 is part of the premium snapdragon family. I'd pick the z5c any day. Mine has no issues with anything I throw at it. Plus if it's a little bit older it's usually a bit cheaper.
i think xperia Xc camera can take 4k video, but sony "not allowed" that's function, in Xc system dump it's already 4k apps, maybe we can use same way like Xperia X to get 4k video
whats the actual difference between the z5 Us & the Z5 International?? cant anyone tell me that, plz. cant find out any of this info an amazon. we get 2 yesses & two Nos no matter question you ask.
Sony really knows how to mess things up. they create a new category of phones and then they destroy it maybe afraid that they could sell them. totally absurd. I will still stick to my xperia z3 compact. water resistant good camera smaller bezels and better materials.
What's up with you people that want it waterproof? I've been using the iphone 4s for yeaaaaars inside, outside, in bath it's still going strong! Slow .. but strong! If i wanted to shoot or film underwater, i rather use proper materials instead of a smarthphone. Personally i can't wait to get the X Compact in my hands, heard a lot that the cpu sucks .. but hey, it's still a GREAT chip and an efficient one too, wich is good for battery life. No need to get the BEST of the BEST .. and it outbeats the 810?! wich is an overheating chip. And with 3GB Ram, you'll do it fine for a long time ...
Osiiiii waterproof is not about filming underwater. Some people have active life were we are using our phones near the ocean, in the rain, in outdoors environments - where its great to have a phone that is water and dust proof so that we don't have to worry. I got the z5 compact because I was walking on the beach with my dog, and a wave came while I was picking up is ball and soaked my shorts - RIP cell phone - so i got the z5c so they wont happen to me again. Also when I get back to my car after a surf, and use the phone with wet hands, etc I never have to worry.
I can understand you somewhere, but i'm also a lot outside and tbh i never had problems with my phone when it was raining. Well you see .. if i went to the beach, i make sure i don't have anything in my pockets if i went for a walk on the beach with your knees in water or at least i make sure i have it in my hands (unless you have a strong dog so you need your 2 hands to hold him back haha) but i can understand it somewhere, with a waterproof phone you really don't have to worry about those things, but i actually never worry about those things with my non waterproof phone, but hey, i don't live near a beach. I just have a feeling some people are a bit scared to use a non waterproof phone in just rain ..
Well it's actually okay. But they do have a 1080p version of ZC5. They could have just ported it to the XC and make it more premium cos I bet this is as expensive.
Not a Compact. Compacts are all 'SMALL FLAGSHIPS'. Bad decision. Should have called it the X Mini and released a separate XZ Compact smartphone. Not that the X Compact is a bad phone, but for that price, you want specs that last a while. From my trusted Z3 Compact, it's either the Nexus Sailfish, or the OnePlus3. As much as I hate big sized phones, you're getting A LOT of phone for your money with the OP3. Only concern is their buggy software.
I feel the same way. I'm using four smartphones atm, ranging from 4" to 5.7" and I'm always glad to come back to my Z5c at the end of the day, which is my daily driver. I wish it had a sharper display and better blacks, though. OP3 is really the way to go atm, completely agree with that. As long as the size doesn't bother you as a daily driver. For example I hate to use my Note 4 anywhere but at home. The X compact is an insult to the compact series. Bad decision to not name it mini or sth like that.
David Kaner Agreed. I have used the Note 2 before, and while I absolutely loved that phone, it felt INCREDIBLE downsizing to the One M8 and then the Z3 Compact. True one-handed smartphone use. At home, I use the TV or the laptop anyway so there's no use for a huge ass screen. I've dropped the Note 2 multiple times while bringing it out of my pocket etc if my other hand is holding something else. Never happened with the Z3C though. And I'm one with large hands too. Such a shame.
When you're bothering to go to the menu Display WHY THE HELL not set both phones on the same settings for display. Best compare all three options, or at least use off option for both phones.
I have been using it for 2 years, never used screen protection or covers. Result? i dropped it countless times, but there are no scratches, of course the corners are a bit ruined, but that's all. It is hard has a rock.
X compact it was love on the first sight. Because i don't need water resistance and i rather pick a surely new phone. When i change my G Flex 2 on that. Because i have the principle to buy new phone's. That are just released and come to market. Because that way you get most of the juice out of it.
I think Z5c would still beetter than Xc in almost all aspects except on the display and camera sensors. still, using Snapdragon 650 and not 820 and casting off the waterproofing are failures, Sony. seems like you're drunk :(
The X compact is officially not water resistant, but there are videos with it being tested by people and it seems to be water resistant as well. Also, if it wasn't, i wouldn't explain the presence of the gasket around the SIM/SD card slot cover. I'm not interested into finding out whether it is or not though, i've fooled around with the previous z3 compact that was supposed to be water resistant, but somehow it managed to survive 2 baths, 2 rinses and died on his 3rd rinse. I was lucky sony replaced it with the new X compact. It feels virtually the same, no hiccups whatsoever , gaming included.
but isn't the x series supposed to be the replacement of Z series? well, I love the compact series of sony because they are small and also have a flagship specs. what have they done to our beloved compact series? and even though it didn't have the flagship specs, they still cost just as high. 650 is awesome, I know it since I also use redmi note 3 pro, but they supposed to lower the cost if they want to use middle entry processor :(
it's sad to lose waterproof on the new compact but sd650 looks promising based on the comparison videos with sd820 I had several phones including z5 with sd810 and it's absolutely horrible at keeping it's temperature down them throttling
Honestly though do you really need a water proof phone I mean your actually not gonna stay in the rain to answer a call or take a shower with come on let's be realistic besides swimming is a perk but besides the point do you really need water proof
X compact does not have 4k video recording, and the Z5 compact has frosted glass on the back. Is this really your full time job?
z5 back is not plastic.. its glass. how can you not tell you are literally holding it in your hand?????
and it's frosted glass
Yoko Kurama the Z5 certainly is glass... the Z5 compact however, is plastic.
Z5 Compact is not plastic.
I was at a store today and i took the Z5C in my hands, the rear panel is definitely glass, it's just that they covered the smooth surface of the glass with that matt finish. Also, if you look on ebay, you'll have the replacement part which states something like "made of glass, handle with care".
Guys I have the z5 compact and it's PLASTIC but it's quality is excellent
no water-proofing is a deal breaker for me :(
true water proof phones are designed to use in water, cost a ton with shlt specs, sony cant spend all the cash to make it true water proof, slim and nice looking at the same time, so they simply changed their marketing phrase.
Rokupix Ruiqi i know it just sucks, my girlfriend always waits for the next compact. But now she will wait to then next, she owns a Z5C so she'll survive another year. I'll will be getting th xz :)
how is her Z5C? I think 320 USD is a good deal i wanted to get one but heard too many mixed review...
the z5c is great, after some updates things got alot better. The phone can get a little hot after heavy usage, but no overheating. The SD 810 seems to work pretty nice, only thing i can complain about is that the z3c had way better battery life. Still not bad though.

Sony's design is best

Wrong info at 5:20 regarding 4K video for the X Compact. Please edit video or clarify otherwise. And thank you for a great video!
"easier to plug-in when you are drunk" :) you deserve a like for this alone :) great review, ofc :)
2016... what a great time for compact smartphone
I went to an Xperia X Compact after my Moto G3 2015 camera crapped out after a couple of drops. I re-flashed out of the box to UK version and now the fingerprint scanner is working just fine. In certain categories, such as camera. It has no optical stabilisation, like the 6s plus has for example. Speed is the same of course.

hi Why did not compare the sound of the phone
Because they sound the same. At least i don't think the Z5C is any different, the X compact i have now sounds equally good to the previous Z3C, no difference at all.
It seems like Z5C is still better in my opinion. Especially the price has dropped to around 300 USD, don't think the new XC is as cheap.
The X Compact has a SD650, a midrange chip which is actually weaker than the Z5C's SD810, a high end chip from 2015.
so you are recommending Z5C although it is older model from last year?
+Jeff Tung Cheaper, and more powerful by a good distance. Has water-resistance too, unlike the X Compact.
+Jeff Tung The only good you'll get out of the X Compact are higher RAM and better camera.
but heard many issues on z5c, especially overheat, slow apps, auto shut down etc. Do you know are these commonly seen or just happen to some of the users?
is it just me, or the x compact has better colors on its screen? the z5 compact looks washed out compared to it.
Thank you for sharing! Would you be able to post an Xperia X Compact vs. iPhone SE performance comparison? Thanks!
Can either of these be used on the Verizon network?
have you faced a microphone problem while calling in your z5 compact ??
how much is it expected to be ?
Does the Sony Xperia X Compact do VR
any idea about pricing?
450 euros in Europe.
why did you use SUPER VIVID on the X ?
and X-REALITY on the Z5 ?
The super vivid display looked better but I guess its because of the vivid mode :(

i think xperia Xc camera can take 4k video, but sony "not allowed" that's function, in Xc system dump it's already 4k apps, maybe we can use same way like Xperia X to get 4k video
I have seen three reviews about x compact, often touch the screen again. Does it's screen not senstive?
whats the actual difference between the z5 Us & the Z5 International?? cant anyone tell me that, plz. cant find out any of this info an amazon. we get 2 yesses & two Nos no matter question you ask.
x compact has overheat issue in recording videos? or any of these phones

Luigi Agostino hope the update did not fuck up your navigation bar function like many of us z3c users..
verfresht yes it did
I'm gonna ask you about camera cover in Xperia Z5 compact, is it made from plastic or special glass?
I'm Shark 93 Thank you bro...
\is it true that the Z5 Compact lost the Stamina Mode after updating to Marshmallow? An apparently the Battery life is very pooor.......?
X Compact, and it's not close.
I buy sony phones because they are waterpoof.... now apple is waterproof and sony not..... So i guess i need switch to iphone now? Hate that....
XZ is waterproof, X performance is also waterproof.. both ip68.. iphone7 is water resistant ip67
Freediver HD apple has better speakers better camera better performance
as a z3compact user due for renewal, I believe I'm a prime target market....both of these fail
I was expecting updated specs but then Sony had to drop the water resistance and retain the 720p screen.
720p on a 4.6 inch screen is perfect.
Well it's actually okay. But they do have a 1080p version of ZC5. They could have just ported it to the XC and make it more premium cos I bet this is as expensive.
Ronwaldo Canlas I thought the z5c was 720p...the more you know.
Also this is cheaper than the z5c by a good margin.
it dont shoot 4k video
Has X compact timeshift video??
Such a shame.
umm, the software on the oneplus 3 is buggy? :o
+Mazin Bashar VERY buggy. Random reboots. Network and Wifi disconnections. Very very slow updates to name a few.
TheBlooRayChannel oh, that's sad. Thanks a tonne, btw. :)
love the z5 compact
IDK about "awesome camera" for the Z5C. I have it and its bloody slow compared to Samsung, LG and Apple products.
When you're bothering to go to the menu Display WHY THE HELL not set both phones on the same settings for display. Best compare all three options, or at least use off option for both phones.
z5 is a terribly delicate phone, completely regret going with sony
Just get a good case and a screen protector, unless you have butter in your hands you should be fine..,,
I have been using it for 2 years, never used screen protection or covers. Result? i dropped it countless times, but there are no scratches, of course the corners are a bit ruined, but that's all. It is hard has a rock.
Sean Bean?
compact means compact in all means but these phones r not dual sim. for me it is a big fallier
X compact it was love on the first sight. Because i don't need water resistance and i rather pick a surely new phone. When i change my G Flex 2 on that. Because i have the principle to buy new phone's. That are just released and come to market. Because that way you get most of the juice out of it.
just new is new glossy design aur 5 axis camera which do not blur from edges liske previous model but z3c is very cheap i go for that or z5c
I wouldn't buy a z3c, because it won't get updated to android 7.0
that has never happened to me, I've been using z5c for 3 months already
650 is awesome, I know it since I also use redmi note 3 pro, but they supposed to lower the cost if they want to use middle entry processor :(
well i wanted to replace my z3c for this phone but this is no option anymore.
great job for ruining the compact serie sony
People said the same about the Z5C .. not worth to upgrade it, thx sony for ruining the Z series ..
it's sad to lose waterproof on the new compact but sd650 looks promising based on the comparison videos with sd820
I had several phones including z5 with sd810 and it's absolutely horrible at keeping it's temperature down them throttling
That defiantly looks like a Nokia 735!!!
why compare to phones with so much price diff? but Sony has made a nice phone. :)
Honestly though do you really need a water proof phone I mean your actually not gonna stay in the rain to answer a call or take a shower with come on let's be realistic besides swimming is a perk but besides the point do you really need water proof
Sony Phones are very costly as compared to phones from other brands with same features.. :-(
I'd go with z5c ofc
Thanks mate
так и чё в итоге, братуха?
That x compact looks kinda like iPhone 7
z5 compact when it is folly to take
but first, why would anyone buy a yellow colored phone?!
