    Biggest problem with Sony in my experience, is that they tend to drop support for their devices much sooner than other companies.

    • @hirukashiro5995
      @hirukashiro5995 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +465

      This will always happen with anything niche. Mass market products tend to get longest support since the company wants people to keep buying the stuff even several years after the launch. It's not the case with niche stuff as there won't be anymore people buying after the launch, so there's no incentive for the company to keep the support

      @@hirukashiro5995 the damage was done back when they WERE a major player as Sony-Ericsson... They dropped support for phones within a year... It burned so much of their fan-base.

Also the phone doesn't do anything above and beyond what a galaxy s22 ultra or 23 ultra can do if you're an up and coming media creator

As a owner of many Xerpia phones over the last 10 years or so, I find it very difficult to support the brand in the last few years because of the reasons you've mentioned, despite me knowing they are an amazing product that stands out from the rest, they just need to even out their offering a little more and launch it properly and they'll be great again.

    1. Reasonable price
    2. Reduce minor bugs
    3. Sack the marketing team (No one try to introduce the product and release it after 2 month when everybody’s excitement is over)

    Man, Sony phones live in my heart and head rent-free. My first smartphone was a Sony phone, and not even a flagship. It was a budget phone, and I loved the fact it could keep up with all my tasks until its android version was too old to get updates for apps and stuff. Plus, I accidentally dropped it from the fifth floor, so it died a fighter. I really loved how personal it could get if you used a phone for a while-after two years out of five we had together, I knew everything about it. If something did not work or happened, I knew how to fix it or what was happening. I knew all the quirks and the ways around them. When they cut down their budget segment I was a student who couldn't afford buying his own phones, then, they holed up in their flagship segment releasing only flagship for niche price. I still wish for them to make a comeback and take over the phone sector. Love Sony

      It's a little harder because in the PRO mode, the only way you're getting most of it, is if you're saving both raw + jpg. And it's the raw images that allow you to recover more of the highlights and shadows with better exposure and white balance tuning. Straight out of the camera, maybe not much since the BASIC mode already pre-processes by applying noise reduction algorithms and sometimes, HDR.

    From a Japanese perspective...
    Japanese 3 major cell phone carrier has "Spring Collection" and "Autumn Collection," and I think it might be one of the factors for long waiting period; you just have to know which cycle your desired phone is on.
    Many of the Japanese companies, not limited to smart phone makers, are so fixed on the domestic market first. In this regard, the Japanese car makers have adjusted well for the motor shows to compete with the world stage, but then EV came along and they are well behind again.
    I had to get a new phone last year, and my phone's spec sheet wasn't even complete, yet the phone carriers were saying "Reserve the Phone" before the going into the market day, and in my case, even on the day the phone was going to the market... I had to depend on phone case maker (my phone's spec sheet was missing the thickness lol)
    Japan is a tad bit weird place, and it seems smart phone makers can't let go of the golden era of flip phones we had here in Japan.
    I believe SONY is the only Japanese smart phone maker which sells worldwide? I think SONY doesn't know what the worldwide users want...

    • @yosh322
      @yosh322 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +57

      Yeah, it's a similar case for multitude of Japanese companies in general. Domestic market demand completely trumps foreign demand, leading to Japanese companies to focus primarily on the trends of the Japanese market. Even if Japanese companies want to access foreign markets, they have no idea how to do it & it leads to ineffective efforts.
      One of my friends who works in the music industry said that foreign markets are the lowest priority, to the point that he had to beg his superiors to do social media campaigns for foreigners because they didn't care at all.

      1 - an American viewpoint does not mean it's a worldwide viewpoint. We need to stop believing that our perspective is universal around the globe as that's a good portion why many countries are turning away from us.
      2 - a company like Sony isn't going to make a foreign specific phone just for the eyes of America, or Europe, cause they'll be crucified. It's no different to the American outrage towards movie companies that began to focus on the Chinese market since their movie audience started to catch up and occasionally surpassed ours in terms of money made.

Japanese companies feel so weird at times: They do some things better than everyone else but then oftentimes they seem to get the most basic stuff wrong like they're living in an echo chamber without any user feedback or outside criticism. I notice that a lot with Nintendo too.

    I think it make sense for Sony to continue to produce these phones vs LG, HTC because as new smartphones release year after year there’s more focus on cameras and as a top notch camera company a high end camera - phone seems like a good move 👀

People like to take the phone out of the pocket and take a good quick photo. They should make something similar to the Zenfone 10 as there are not many Android phones with that screen size, everyone is making big screen phones today. I had a couple of Sony models back in the days when they were competitive to others and I’d probably buy one again if they listen to you and make what you suggested. im still using the z5c since launch. using it for roughly 8 years now and still somewhat going strong. its definitely on crutches now after 8 years from overheat lag, screen burn from 15 minutes of the same screen and slowly disappears after a few minutes, some UI disconfigure due to small screen+resolution and modern app updates are for large screens and resolutions, headphone jack used SOOOO MUCH that its broken now, bluetooth stutters occasionally/often enough because of phone lag, battery life somewhat being drained by modern apps power usage because the phones battery is TINY
      the biggest one of these is cell signal strength is pretty mediocre at best because its so outdated.
      none of these make the phone unusable but its just being used on crutches now. luckily i dont use my phone much besides reading/youtube/internet browse/phone call and text/youtube/and surprisingly TAP PAYMENT STILL WORKS because sony had NFC from SOOOOOOOOOO long ago even with the z3c which i stopped using.

    It's so surprising that their camera app doesn't just put out killer photos from the rip. Their mirrorless cameras stripped a lot of people from Canon and Nikon, and did it with great autofocus and great photos without much effort.

    • @crelliseng
      @crelliseng 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      "Without much effort" is subjective. Their camera and video apps in the phone come with all the same settings and menu options as the alpha cameras. The phones also come with really good subject detection and auto focus. Which means if you know how to set shutter speed, ISO, and aperture then you're going to have great photos even when the subject is moving in an action shot. If you really dial in the customizable presets then I bet you can get a comparable photo form this phone as a camera 2-3 times the price. But with default and auto settings an alpha camera isn't that impressive. I spent a few hours setting up my a7iv and a7c, creating presets for different lenses and lighting conditions... That's a lot to ask for someone with a phone where the moment might be lost by the time you dial in the settings.

      Which mirrorless camera? I'm a camera novice who wants something semi-pro but doesn't want to spend my whole life "learning cameras". Sony has always made great shit but I'm curious which you think is the most consumer-friendly.

    • @crelliseng
      @crelliseng 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@reanimationxp I really like using the a7iv and my gmaster lenses. But something like the sony fe 35mm f1.8 would be fine for most people. The main thing is what your intended use would be for the camera? Most people that spend $4000 on a camera and lens, but don’t learn all the ends in out, are often times better off just using their cell phone. Part of what makes mirrorless cameras and separate lenses so compelling is the complete freedom to change any setting to match your environment. Otherwise you’ll end up with white blown out skies, a group photo with half the people in focus, or images with colors that feel completely unnatural. Granted, a lot of cell phones get all those things wrong too, but they are cheaper and multifunctional.

      Not sure what he's talking about. My Xperia 1 III takes better photos than the IPhone 14 Pro in point and shoot. It produces more detailed images while keeping it realistic. Lots of phones nowadays just applies so much sharpening and structure which makes everything look like plastic. Not being racist here but Xperia uses face metering and since it's not optimized for darker skin tones it tends to overexpose. You can fix this by turning off face detection though.

It's basically all that you described with a very good functional camera, but still room to edit much more than on other phones, and the camera is so good that pictures from back then are still better than some taken with the new S23. It still had all IP68 resistance, good battery life, the side fingerprint reader and shutter button, great screen for the time (it was the phone right before Sony's very first 4K phone), and it wasn't as ridiculously expensive as they are today. The issue is that that was the last phone gen they sold before pulling out from most of the world (except for Japan, the US and Europe) and before Sony started focusing on premium camera-phones and on the US market.

      At this point they’re not experimenting, they’re just intentionally being inefficient. They’ve had this problem since the Ion a decade ago. Sony isn’t growing as a company, they’ve shut down just about every store in the states, massive layoffs every year. They’ve fallen from the grace of being the most innovative tech company in the world to being content with mediocrity. The Porsche comparison isn’t accurate. Sony is more like Jaguar. A company that’s been in limbo for decades not knowing how to effectively convert consumers and become relevant again.

      @PaleCentaur 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think part of it might also come down to gauging demand: there's more opportunity to scale manufacturing to purchasing so they don't overproduce a phone that they know is very niche. If they wanted to be able to sell the phone at launch, they would have to have already made enough back stock to cover potential sales; if those sales numbers don't keep up with the inventory, they have a lot of expensive hardware that they're unable to get rid of.
      I used to work in cell phone sales, and while I as the salesperson loved Sony phones, I very rarely had customers express an interest in buying them, even with an endcap showcasing live demos of the phone. Ultimately, they almost always went with Motorola or Samsung--for whatever reason, Sony just didn't attract customers' attention. So that leads to Sony making way more of those phones than they need to and buying saddled with old inventory.
      If they're waiting to see how many people put the money down for these phones, they can hedge their bets on manufacturing just a little bit and roll them out as customers want them. I don't know how their manufacturing process works, of course, but they just seem to be taking a very conservative approach to their sales.

      "the window from announcement to release of phone gives an enthusiast like me ample time to prepare my finances, backup my work, and get ready for the upgrade."
      Those should all be done for any given moment to arrive to get a new phone.
      1) You should always have more than enough to buy a new phone for any valid reason (accident, failure etc).
      2) Backups should be done to your own NAS backup system by daily profile, using rsync, even hourly.
      3) There is nothing to get "ready" when changing phones. Your home screen and its settings move between brands, your phone settings move so, your files, profiles etc. Only things that needs is renaming the new phone and configure it to work with backup system and your own services, and that takes like 30 min when you have documentation (to-do list) for that.

    I have a friend who specifically only used Sony phones since she was in highschool. Their lifespans are crazy. I remember her first sony phone lasted around 8 years and the one she currently has is from 2018? The only reason why it's not working too well now is because she dropped it, but before that, everything was still pristine. The price is a little high but for something that lasts that long, I think it's a good investment!

      Yep, Sony phones don't seem to have planned obsolescence, in fact they give you great battery protection features so that they last long. My Samsungs all die after 1 - 2 years, either the motherboard gives up, or the display will show a line, which gradually covers the entire screen.

      I really loved the Xperia XA I had back in highschool. Yes it got slow over time since it was a budget device, but for 2016 ish, the camera was so good compared to what my parents had for example on their Huawei. Only got kinda slow cuz tech was moving quickly. I dropped it multiple times, nothing. Also I looove their official leather cases. Final note: can we have metal backs on phones back (have a cutout for the wireless charger but have rest be metal for example) and toolless SIM trays too

      Their departments (mobile, camera, audio, gaming) are very compartmentalized and they often fear cannibalizing the brand. They could make a better camera and add a better DAC but they choose not to. Also Sony has a weird habit of complying with local standards like the EU having safe listening so their speaker and headphone volume is often quieter than it could be. im still using the z5c since launch. using it for roughly 8 years now and still somewhat going strong. its definitely on crutches now after 8 years from overheat lag, screen burn from 15 minutes of the same screen and slowly disappears after a few minutes, some UI disconfigure due to small screen+resolution and modern app updates are for large screens and resolutions, headphone jack used SOOOO MUCH that its broken now, bluetooth stutters occasionally/often enough because of phone lag, battery life somewhat being drained by modern apps power usage because the phones battery is TINY
      the biggest one of these is cell signal strength is pretty mediocre at best because its so outdated.
      none of these make the phone unusable but its just being used on crutches now. luckily i dont use my phone much besides reading/youtube/internet browse/phone call and text/youtube/and surprisingly TAP PAYMENT STILL WORKS because sony had NFC from SOOOOOOOOOO long ago even with the z3c which i stopped using.
