    You should try a gunsmith hollow grind on some screwdriver tips someday. You just grind on the the side flats with a bench grinding wheel. Make it like this )( If you do it just right the screwdriver tip will hold a screw. Whenever I do it I grind on the top of a grinding wheel. Put your finger right on the back of the screwdriver too. Gives a better feel for catching the radius just right. Makes your screwdrivers work like magic. Dress your wheel up and get it nice and flat and square. It should always be that way.

      Thanks!

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@357magdad hollow grinding screwdriver tips is a bit of a cowboy move in the home shop. You can't actually see what you're doing while you're doing it. So you kind of just have to go through the motions thoughtfully to pull it off. It's very much a by feel kind of thing. But well worth trying to do. Because if you get it right you'll have a screwdriver that can really put some torque on a screw without stripping it out. A hollow ground tip grabs at the base of the slot and a flat angled grind torques the top of the slot. Do use a screw while you're grinding to check the fit as you go along too. You want it tight. Ideally the screwdriver should hold the screw. One size does not fit all.

    Another great restoration Magdad, I was a little surprised when I saw the length of the video, but when I watched and saw all the new techniques it made absolute sense. Absolutely the right call on the tip, if you'd ground it away there would be so little left to work with, and hey, always good to gain some new skills along the way ! End result looks great, I recently inherited a Stanley driver of this design, but unfortunately the tip was beyond repair so it's now a "pokey thing" I will however endeavour to apply your standards to refresh the ferule and handle.

    Very nice! Its always fun to watch them temper colors run. It there's enough mass in the steel, you can sometimes quench and temper in the same heat.
    The tip could be a crack if it was worked at too low of a temperature. (Red-orange)....

    I know you said propane torch, but I assume you were using MAPP? Very nice job as always. Love watching your videos and then I dream about restoring some of the tools I inherited. I still use them all the time. Fortunately my grandfathers took really good care of their tools. Growing up depression made you value things a lot more. I grew up learning that behavior from them. I wince every time I see stuff treated as throwaway by others.

    • @matthewhopkins666
      @matthewhopkins666 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      After heating the steel to critical temperature(around 1,000F) and rapid cooling in oil the tip will be extremely hard but also brittle this leaves the tip prone to the possibility of chipping or even snapping off when torqued on in a screw slot.
      Heating the steel again to around 400F tempers the steel leaving it still hard enough that it won't deform easily while also making it no longer brittle and prone to chipping or snapping.

    Nice work swaging the tip. I also failed on my first tempering attempt. I got to the desired straw colour and did not quench. A couple of seconds later, too soft. So we both learned that once we get the desired colour, it needs to be quenched to stop the heat.

    This is the best screwdriver restoration yet. Most people would pass that screwdriver up when they saw the tip. I thought you would grind the tip down until you got to a wide spot, then reshape it. The home blacksmithing and tempering is something new to me. The handle treatment was also appropriate. I expected the Bombay purple stain to be used, but the the original black is better. The two gentlemen who established Hurwood would be very pleased with your restoration of their vintage product. Great job.

    • @1pcfred

      @@357magdad thinking about it the secret to my success my lie in my bench grinders. I've seen what some folks use and I couldn't work with that myself. The grinder I do Phillips tips on has massive tool rests. So it is easy to keep the drivers aligned on those tables. I just measured it and it's 3-1/2" deep and 4 inches wide. So that gives a lot of stability. Plus I keep my grinding wheels dressed square too. All of that helps in getting precise grinds.

    Magdad,
    Beautiful work? You reminded me of 7th grade shop, where we attempted to make a screwdriver. Unfortunately, I now know why the attempt failed so badly. You should try making a screwdriver from scratch. I can see it now; "Magdad & Chuck No. Made in USA ".
    Out of curiosity, have you ever tried highlighting the lettering with India ink? It should work similarly to the way scrimshaw is highlighted.
    Bob

    • @357magdad
      @357magdad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Bob! I've made a few knives from scratch, so a screwdriver should be similar. I've tried highlighting the lettering with cold blue with limited success.
