It might be true because they didn't repair the cop cars, they bought them. 60 cars, $400 a piece. The city hall movie must have been WAY more expensive. The government of Chicago wasn't going to let anyone run rampant through city hall.
Doesn't really make sense, it is drastically larger. I think his estimate is a little low though. It is not like they included death count money because that really would have pushed it up
Wasn't that mall destined for the wrecker anyway ? At least it was closed sitting idle at the time of filming. So what is the damage ? A straight metal window frame will be bought by the recycler at the same price as a bent one. Glass doers get crushed before melting and recycling anyway.
Oh come on now, with all those road signs and rails AND police cars we gotta be talking about millions here. I mean, it's tax dollars right? Everything costs more when it's being paid for by tax dollars.
Pretty sure the Police Cars were all being decommissioned. In the late 70's and 1980's a lot of shows had police cars getting destroyed. They were probably getting newer models with catalytic converters, etc. So they probably bought them used. Then when you think of the salvage and parts values. There was probably very little cost to the taxpayers.
My mother remembers when they filmed this back when she lived in downtown Chicago. They'd turn on the news every night just to see what crazy shit they shot/ran into/blew up and so they got some good publicity out of all their weird stunts.

samur2121 Luke gets ripped off when he sells his speeder, and Han then rips them off again by overcharging them for the ride to Alderaan, so neither is a reliable example. Besides, how do you calculate the cost of a moon-sized space station and all its support vehicles? Or an entire inhabited planet? And what kind of currency are they using anyway? Too much guesswork involved.
samur2121 It would be, and I'm sure the totals given in these videos aren't completely accurate either.
