    Dalton has quickly become my favorite TH-camr. Definitely underrated. I love how he shows all the bad stuff that he comes across unlike other people who make everything look like roses and cherries. Also love the fact that he involves his family in his shenanigans 😂 it almost feels as if we are right there in the garage with him.

    You don’t realize how good Dalton, Kevin and Derek are until you see a channel of someone trying to duplicate what they do. You can be the best shade tree mechanic in the world, but you gotta have PERSONALITY to be successful on TH-cam. Rock on Dalton; this old man in Oklahoma appreciates all the sarcasm and self-deprecation.😎👍🏼🍺

    33:17 The D settings are indicative of the Cruise-o-matic transmission. D1, D2, D3 are drive 1 is the lowest gears, D2 being around town gears, and D3 being highway gears (cruising speeds). There is another (green) "updated" Galaxie 500 in Kansas City listed on Marketplace for $12,000.. Gives you some idea what the car is potentially worth.

    • @auteurfiddler8706

      @@auteurfiddler8706 in the 50's automatic transmissions were a new thing. Everyone was making something different, almost every year some brought out a "new" automatic transmission

      In the 50s there weren't many highways with high top speeds so the 3rd ratio was a bit too long for around town so you could "manually" adjust ratios on the fly think the floppy paddles on modern minivans for a similar idea today or the sport mode in your Corolla econobox

    • @KrazyMitchAdventures
      @KrazyMitchAdventures ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ywe3 They had highways (ie: Route 66) but with the Manual transmission vehicles Up until the late 1970s, most transmissions had three or four forward gear ratios, although five-speed manual transmissions were occasionally used in sports cars such as the 1948 Ferrari 166 Inter and the 1953 Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sprint. Five-speed transmissions became widespread during the 1980s, as did the use of synchromesh on all forward gears.
      Until about 2005 most Automatics still had "gear selector" on the shifter. Most automatics still only had 3 gears with over-drive (4th gear). Although it was rare for people to turn off overdrive.

    • @49Fordproject
      @49Fordproject ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In D2 the transmission would start off in 2nd gear for winter driving. 1st gear was easy to spin the tires on snow. Take off in second would ease off on the spin. That's what an old timer told me. And I'm no spring chicken at 57..😊

    The 59 looks great!! I bet you could get a bubble balancer for the wheels pretty cheap. Spin balancing didn’t come out until the 70s or 80s. All those old cars were balanced on a bubble balancer. Just a thought.

      Spin (or dynamic) balancing came out well before the '70s, first invented in 1945. We had a Bear model 330, both static and dynamic balance, in my dad's gas station shop from the time he bought the place in '61 and it was far from new then. The Bear 330 machine was used at the Indy 500 back in the day... Bear provided the front-end alignment and balancing equipment. I knew the guy who was the Bear shop chief at Indy, was an old friend of my dad's from Bear's front-end school.

You are so close: dashpad, real shocks, bushings, balance tires (lots of YT vids how), alignment, paint correction, and clean up the windows. Maybe exhaust. Drove almost an identical car for a couple years in college in the mid-90s. Great grandparents bought it new and it was off the road since the late 1960s. 332, same transmission, power steering, and select-air air conditioning - and vacuum wipers (discovered how great Rain X was) . . . The car was the same geranium color but the paint scheme was a little different - geranium on the bottom and roof and white through the middle. The thing rode like a couch and usually gave 16 to 18 mpg - would bark the tire shifting into second if you had your foot in it. Good times.

    Your car is equipped with the Three-Speed "Cruise-O-Matic" transmission. D1 is used if you want low-gear starts with automatic upshifts to 2nd and direct. D2 gives 2nd-gear starts with automatic upshift into direct. Low can only be accessed in D2 by flooring the accelerator at speeds less than 15 mph.
    Ford transmissions (FMX) and Borg-Warner transmissions were like this until about 1967/1968. Even some AMC's (which used Borg-Warners) had the same 2nd-gear start with the P-R-N-D2-D1-L quadrant.

    Dealing with solo brake bleeding/fluid flushing and tracking down vacuum system leaks, I finally broke down and bought a metal Mityvac vacuum pump and a AUTOOL smoke machine. The time and headache savings to bleed brakes, swap out brake fluid, and quickly see the vacuum leaks in a system made these two items well worth the costs.

    Drive 2 should start out in second then go to third unless you floor it, then it'll downshift to first. Drive 1, AKA green dot is the standard 1-2-3 shift pattern. If you want to shift those manually 1-2-3, start off in L, get it past 29 MPH (you need to be HARD into the throttle for this to successfully work), shift to D1 then pull it back down to L and for third you can shift it back up to D1.
    The rear leaf spring bushings need replaced. I did them on both of my 64's, it cured both odd leaning to one side or another and going around a corner both cars no longer felt like the back end was going to come around to the front, not to mention better ride and handling.

      @@paulsimonie6937 Coming from a guy who rebuilt one and drives one regularly. I find if I do the manual L to D1 shift it'll often just skip right to third gear if I'm not hard enough on the throttle or going fast enough. I think it's something to do with the transgo shift kit I installed when I rebuilt the transmission because if I held it in L then shifted to D1 it would shift to second then third automatically at lower speeds/throttle before. I find I have to be at least 50% in the throttle for it to not skip to third. It's either that, or the combo of the 2200 RPM stall converter and camshaft vacuum signal I have.

    my little sister is looking for a 59 ford. I've got a 57 Fairlaine, she was never into the 50's Fords until I bought my 57, now I regret it! 😂 not really, its nice having someone else to talk about old cars with other than my dad. I'm loving these videos!

    I see in the comments some guessing about the shift markings. I am from that era. You should have R for reverse. L for low. in that position it will start in low or go to second win down shifting above 25 mph. when the speed drops below 25 it will drop back into low. Drive 1 will start in second and go to high. They did that so you could start in second in snow and ice for better traction. Drive 2 starts in low and goes to second and on to third. If you push the accelerator to the floor it should kick down to second for passing. That is adjustable with the carburetor linkage. should work in D1 or D2. That is the way I remember it. Hope that helps. Most of those 59 s rusted away so you have a very collectable car there. You get the front bushing and links balance etc. she will cruse all day at 80 plus MPH.

    Ahhh the rare 1959 ford fairlane 500. Love these cars. So many memories building one. We named it frankenstiens monster. We dropped a 429 big block ford into it. Well after we did we found out that it has around 500 or so horsepower. The last piece is there and soon it will drive again. Thanks for saving this beauty.

    29:20 Classic Industries wants $525 for a dash pad (plus shipping of course) so a heat gun, a few bucks of foam, and a can of spray glue really is the budget option.

    A little info on the transmission, Low is first D with a green dot is second, and Regular D is third. Regular D being closest to Neutral and low being at the very bottom of the shift pattern

    If you have to glue more things the spray can is not the best for interior stuff. Some of the best stuff is dap brand landu top adhesive. It's made for vinyl tops and has uv tolerance. You can spray it with a cheap paint gun but it will ruin it or needs to sit in thinner overnight in pieces.

    Back in the late 90s my friend had this same car in the same color in Austin TX. It was his moms car he said he had to fly up to Kansas to bring it back to Texas. That is an unforgettable color.

    It's a nice car. I played in my dad's Galaxie when I was a kid but I never heard it run. More yard art and toy then a drivable car. There was no TH-cam car revival in the '90s.
