    Godzilla crying is so heartbreaking.

  • @TheVoiceOfReason93
    @TheVoiceOfReason93 10 ปีที่แล้ว +477

There are three interpretations to this scene, according to TvTropes:
    1) "Godzilla being tormented by those memories rather than cherishing them. Note how the flashback isn't about how Godzilla fought off the American soldiers, but rather about how the Japanese soldiers left him to die. He remembered the veteran alright, but not as an old friend, as the human who abandoned him. Maybe that was the moment that cemented Godzilla's hatred of humans."
    2) "Godzilla is, well, still pretty damn pissed off. He destroys stuff and buildings with loads of people still inside, who either die by radiation poisoning, burned to death or crushed by rubble or suffocate under the debris. He's also angry at humanity for making him into a mutated monster via a nuclear sub. But he sees the general and becomes sentimental because somewhere, under all that anger, there's the heart of a sad and suffering animal. He knows the man means him no harm as he remembers how they respected him after his Heroic Sacrifice. He then becomes confused, as he hates humanity but likes this guy. So, in the end, he decides to give the general a quick and relatively painless death rather than the potential suffering he gave to millions of others."
    3) The official explanation: "Shindo was responsible for Godzilla's creation (or so he thought, not knowing that Godzilla already existed and his submarine had nothing to do with it). HE had turned his savior into this destructive monster- the bane of his homeland, and so he asks Godzilla to kill him (the nod at the end of the scene) because he could not bear to live with this. Godzilla complies."

@@laeekkhan3177 The two shots of a dinosaur and the man saluting are of these two decades ago during WWII and before the nuke mutated Godzilla. Godzilla saved the man's life and as a result the man has severe survivor's guilt over the condition Godzilla was in before he left and the tragedy that made Godzilla what he is now.
Godzilla is crying because he recognizes the man and holds no ill will towards him, but can tell by the situation that the man has suffered and wants it to end. He doesn't want to take this life, and the fact he has to to grant the man's last wish is agony for him as he's one of the few humans he holds no animosity towards as a result of what has happened to him. At this point he is the only friend Godzilla has ever had... and he has to kill him to honor that.

In the 90's it made it kinda clear Heisei Godzilla had a level of telepathy. In this movie, he and Shindo share a "conversation" where Shindo is asking Godzilla to kill him to atone for abandoning him. Once Godzilla realizes who this is, he for the first time seems reluctant to kill someone. But the nod Shindo gives to him, is his approval of "it's ok," as he also feels guilty for Godzilla's own current state.
Remember this one had been exposed to modern nuclear energy. Nuclear energy that Shindo had ties to. He thought he was saving his own savior, but instead turned him into a monster. So he wanted to give his life to Godzilla to repent.

Judging by how Godzilla was reacting, I actually think he didnt want to kill Shindo at all. Shindo wanted die because he couldn't bear the guilt of having left Godzilla behind after it saved him. I mean here he stands before the king of the monsters, he KNOWS whats likely going to happen, and he just nods at him, ready to die. I don't know about anyone else but it almost looks like Godzilla is crying at 1:51. In a way, Godzilla finally gave Shindo peace by killing him.

The two interpretations of this scene can be generalized into a comedic moment or a somber moment. Either it’s Shindo trying to reconnect with Godzilla and then despite the fitting music and Godzilla seemingly noticing him, he just subverts it by blowing him to bits.
On the contrast, Shindo stays behind knowing his fate by doing so. He seeks to make amends to the creature he left behind on that island. And by that, he accepts inevitable death. And Godzilla seemingly recognizing him, hesitates. But ultimately with Shindo’s nod of acceptance, and with tears in both of their eyes. He gives a quick death to the veteran after one last roar.
    I prefer the somber interpretation

What a brilliant scene. I've never read this as some romantic gesture of mutual respect, mainly because I don't think Heisei Godzilla feels right being anthropomorphized that much. Rather, I believe the shared flashback reflects upon a moment that, while romanticized by Shindo his whole life, was simply a particularly painful memory to the once dying animal, now reborn as an avenging avatar of destruction. And as he looks upon his former savior, Mr Shindo understands that the sight of his face must bring it only memories of pain from a bygone time; the furthest thing from the bright future it once brought him. Because Shindo *understands* - he understands that Godzilla is a tragic figure, he understands that the only thing that will give this monster pause is not romantic human nostalgia, but pain. Throughout the entire Heisei series, Godzilla only ever directly acknowledged one human being. Perhaps the one human who ever understood, and was willing to accept Godzilla for what it truly is: *our fault.*

Although they seem to communicate as if Godzilla was asking if all people bring pain and Shindo confirmed. But other than that very clear moment of communication, Godzilla is not that much anthropomophized at all. Animals have orders of magnitute more advanced mental life than it was commonly believed not so long ago. Many have problem-solving skills, several seem to have ceremonies, many practice inter-species cooperation, many show altruistic behaviours towards animals of other species, most have more or less advanced emotional life. Given birds originate from dinousaurs, and several bird species make one of the most intelligent and emotionally-invested creatures on the planet, why wouldn't Godzilla have the same features?

This is such a great emotional scene... although I can kind of see why some people think it was supposed to be funny. It's probably because they don't notice the little visual cues that indicate that Godzilla is feeling sadness and respect for the man, so they think it is a bit of dark humor, with the man mistakenly believing they're having some big emotional moment only for Godzilla to apathetically vaporize him.

Godzilla's finest moment. No weapons can seriously stop him, but the emotion charged gaze of a single frail human can. This floors me every time I see it. Just before he melted down in Destroyah, Godzilla probably flashed back and remembered Mr. Shindo.

Whether you enjoy it for it's ballsy b-movie fun or surprisingly emotional and well acted moment from the Commander, this movie is genius. I'm always impressed by just how much they express in this scene. His regret, the guilt he's carried with him all these years, and the empire he built around him to make his country great, to try and chase away those feelings... And then realising it's fleeting. Wealth can't erase that shame he feels. Shown best without a word. Major props to that actor.

Somewhere, deep inside Godzilla, there was a creature that remembered Shindo....but only for a brief moment. The nuclear weapons that birthed Godzilla also completed the transition from wild prehistoric creature to a horrible force of nature. That's why he obliterated Shindo. If this was King Kong, he'd probably have a little more sentiment. Especially if Shindo was a woman.

No, he definitely remembered Shiro completely.
If what you say is true, he wouldn’t grant him such a quick and painless death. He would just continue plowing through the building like he did every other one.
People underestimate Godzilla’s intelligence and sentience, which has been stated multiple times in the showa and heisei series to be human like.

    Godzilla-Hello
Shindo-Nods "yes"perhaps meaning "hello" and, I'm sorry I couldn't help you on the island. I want to be rid of this guilt.
Godzilla- nods "no". I can't do it. You couldn't do anything for me. I understand that.
Shindo nods "yes". You must do this. I need to finally be at peace.
Godzilla nods "yes", then nods "no" and looks sad and in tears. Goodbye.
Shindo- nods "yes". Go on. You must do this. Goodbye, my friend.
    Godzilla roars, then kills Shindo.

Never knowing the true feeling of bitterness and abandonment, the constant need to be fighting just to breath. Resented by beings that could've fill the loneliness in his soul, and to never find peace in a world where everything is out to destroy him and to call such a place a home. And ultimately saving the entire earth to thankless and selfish beings, always escaping back to the sea with screams of hate and intention for his destruction.

Genuinely one of the best scenes in the series, and one of my favourite scenes in Japanese cinema as a whole. Shindo stares at his saviour, the most tortured soul on the planet. Godzilla sees this man, and realizes just who he is. The two exchange a gesture of mutual respect. Then, the Sacred Beast of The Apocalypse grants Shindo one last wish; destroy the city of vanity, along with its creator. Genuinely incredible. You can see Godzilla’s mind so well in this scene.

Shindo was a really brave man. His gratitude for Godzilla saving his life as well as lives of his men was re payed with the very same dinosaur now destroying the city he worked so hard to built. Not only does he blame himself for the city's destruction, but he was also willing to take responsibility for it. While Godzilla is the one destroying the city, Shindo saw himself as the one truly to blame. He died an honorable man. Naive yes, but honorable none the less. Few men who make mistakes are willing to admit to their failures, so Shindo decided to confront his past, yet he knew he could do nothing to stop a creature that would one day takes humanity's place at the top of the food chain, so he decided to end it. Not by taking his own life, but accept death by facing it.

1:48, Godzilla nodded back at Shindo, likely showing that AVoiceOfOpinion93 Is true at this:

What really makes this scene so great is it reveals to the audience that godzilla thinks his actions are justified for what mankind did when they invaded lagos. allot of people misunderstand this scene, godzilla isnt crying out of having to kill shindo. but from the memory and the pain of what he went through. godzilla believes that shindo was essentially the head alpha of the troops that shot him on the beach. and when he confronts him again in this scene he breaks down and cries. When junior dies they set up his scene similar to the godzilsaurus scene here. Thats why in destroyah godzilla breaks into tears again, hes not just upset at the possibility of his son dying, but being forced to watch someone else close to him to be in the same limp dying state he once was on lagos.

This is one thing I know James Rolfe got wrong on in his Godzillathon. This was not about this guy thinking "Godzilla will save us, he won't kill me!" It was "Oh yeah. He's come to bring us the pain we deserve. And I'm ready". And even Godzilla sort of hesitated, remembering him, showing the Heisei era Godzilla was more of an actual character, and not just a tool for fun cheesy stuff.
