- If you’re having trouble understanding the concept of the axis of rotation, you should watch this 2 minutes video
This concept builds upon an understanding of the planes of motion and the types of synovial joints, so be sure to learn those first before taking on the three axes of rotation.
To watch these 2 videos (planes of motion and the types of synovial joints) log in to our Strength Training app or Anatomy app at the link below and search for these videos.

Axis of rotation is an imaginary line that projects through the pivot or rotation point in the joint.
There are three types of axes:
1. AP axis (anterior/posterior): Frontal plane
2. ML axis (medial-lateral): Sagittal plane
3. Longitudinal axis (vertical): Transverse plane
Different joints move in different axes, some move just in one way, and others move in a few or all of them.
This video explains and demonstrates clearly each axis.

I really cannot thank u enough....🥺
I wasted 2 hour.. To understand this small concept...😣
May god bless u🤲
Thank u🙏
I was so confused why frontal plane that divides body front and back has saggital axis because I associate it to saggital plane. Thank you for clarity!
this provides more clarity. thank you
in my course: AP axis is sagittal axis; ML axis is coronal axis
One of the best videos i have ever seen in my life quick and to the point thank you
Very helpful man🔥
God bless you more
This video really helped me
love it!
Love these videos, have subbed you too
Super interesting ❤️
I am not lying when saying this would have been my favourite video should you make it "a few" years ago when I was in med school.
😍 Amazing 😍
Thank You ❤
Great ❤
may i ask specifically whether elevation/depression occurs in the frontal plane and therefore rotate around the anterior-posterior axis? or it shouldnt have an axis of rotation because it is technically not rotating ? (moving superiorly and inferiorly only). also i would appreciate if you could make a video visualising the plane and axis for pronation/supination as well as inversion/eversion... thank you!
👍👍👍❤️
good video but i just hate the anatomical nomenclature we're stuck with...'anterio-posterior' sounds like it should be describing movement around the vertical axis
Medio lateral axis is also called coronal axis?? Cause it looks same
So what axis would a dumbbel side bend be?
Frontal plane
I get this is kinematic convention but it is so dumb. That there are 3 planes of rotation. Lol. Let's hope next pec session I don't get gimbal lock
