How To Cook Char Cloth for Maximum Reactivity, Consistent Heat

Let's explore the characteristics of highly reactive Char Cloth. The best Char Cloth is clean, free of smoke residue, and supple rather than hard or brittle. It has a slight sheen and a soft texture, similar to felt.
On the other hand, Char Cloth that is poorly reactive or even unignitable often appears dirty with smoke residue and feels hard and brittle. One of the main reasons why clean cotton Denim can become unreactive char cloth is due to inconsistent heat. When the heat is interrupted-especially early on-by removing the tin from the fire or shifting it, the water vapor and/or volatile gases that have started to be driven off stop venting. They linger within the tin and the cloth and find the cooler surfaces to condense on. This condensate, I believe, attracts smoke residue and also hardens the char cloth.
