I have bought X5650 to my EX58-UD3R for 40$ from eBay, now selling my i7 920 for 45$ on local second-hand :) I am running the X5650 at 4.0GHz on air, I have only upped a VCore to 1.18. All power saving features, HT, turbo are enabled. What a deal! The most noticable speed up is in video grabbing from apps / games and when converting things. I am so happy I own this great motherboard which is still pretty decent even after 8 years. Just a note - I don't think a dual 1366 MB with x5650 is such a good deal as most of you think. The reason is you cannot overclock chips there. You will have of course 12 cores but a singlecore performance will be quite poor. Also a lot of compute-heavy tasks can be processed by GPUs (rendering) today. For me, the X5650 is just a must have CPU for a desktop / gaming / workstation computer if you already own X58 MB.
I bought a Dell Precision T3500 on eBay for $90 that had a W3520 in it. It came with a 1 TB hard drive and 4 GBs of RAM. I threw in another 2 GBs of RAM and my GTX 650 ti and it's a great PC. Handles all my games flawlessly. I can't believe it. I'm going to replace the CPU with an X5650, though. And maybe upgrade my GPU in next year or so. Budget PC building is my favorite hobby. Great video's man.
It can be replaced with other Dell T Precision power supplies such as the T5500 and the T7500 which are more powerful. Otherwise you'll need a conversion kit.
For any who own or may be looking into getting a good deal on a Dell Workstation, it's probably more well-known at this point, but the Dell T3500 power supply can be swapped out for pretty much any power supply with a 24 pin connector and 8 pin (or two 4-pin) CPU connector. I've got an EVGA 600 Watt PSU in mine at the moment. The two main proprietary parts of the board are the fan headers (2 for the front case fans and one extra one) and the front I/O panel. My Dell came with a W3530 CPU. I quickly bought an X5650 off Amazon for something like $25 and quickly and easily swapped it in. I'm lucky my Dell also came with the better of the two versions of the heat sink, which kind of looks like a smaller version of an EVO 212. And I zip-tied a 92 mm fan on the front of it pushing air back into the heat sink together with an 80 mm fan for exhausting the air out the back. I also added rubber bands around those fans, one under and one over/around the zip ties to prevent harmonic vibrations (as I saw other owners doing; thanks to them, by the way, for the idea). You can get 5 to 4 pin fan header adapters off ebay or Amazon (mine took like a couple weeks to arrive from China but were worth the wait and work well, though I saw after I had already placed the order that some could have been bought within the US, as well). I currently have a 4-pin LED fan working in place of the standard lower front case fan and will replace the other front case fan, as well. I also have another 5 to 4 pin fan header adapter running into a 4 pin fan splitter cable that I use to run the 2 fans on the heat sink. And I used a molex to 4 pin adapter to run an extra case fan at the upper back part of the case. I also swapped out the heavy Dell case for an ATX case -- a cheap Corsair Versa H22 Plus case that I had sitting around. The T3500 motherboard is a fair amount wider from front to back than a standard ATX motherboard (I've heard of some others using some other form factor cases such as an eATX, though I hadn't tried those, myself). So I had to drill out the rivets on my Corsair case that held the drive bays in, removing them to make physical room for the Dell motherboard. 4 screw mount holes line up perfectly, so the board seems fairly secure. The main headache of the T3500 motherboard is that it must be connected to the front I/O panel that comes with the Dell. I tried rigging up just the 2 pins that work for the power button to the Corsair's own power button. Though that did work to allow an initial turning off of the PC, without the front I/O panel connected fully properly, the PC will automatically start up with the power button on the back of the power supply turned on and gives an error message that can be bypassed. I'd looked into this issue for some time with no real satisfactory answers. So it seemed to me the only logical thing to do would be to figure out how best to add the Dell I/O front panel to my Corsair case setup. Because my Corsair case had metal mesh 5 1/4" front drive covers, I used a dremel tool to cut out a slot that fits the Dell I/O panel's main part (the 2 USB slots, 2 jacks, recessed power button, and little LED lights). I then bought black weather strip tape to wrap around the I/O panel part, itself, then I fit that into a cardboard fox that one of the fans had come with. Then I used grip tape on the left and right parts of the cardboard box so that it would grip onto the metal mesh cover. And the metal mesh cover also has little tabs that hold on a piece of foam. But I took out the foam and used those little metal tabs bent over to help hold the cardboard box in place. It actually works well so far and looks nice, though I'd prefer to have a proper metal or plastic enclosure for the I/O panel. But I think this setup will work fine for the foreseeable future. I may find something like a little metal cover that fits over the end of a writing pen to push onto the power button to see if it will stick out enough to be able to push without using a pencil to push the power button on. My Dell came with Windows 7. I found a TH-cam video claiming an upgrade from 7 to 10 could still be done for free. And it did indeed do so for me, though that still involved the usual headache of spending some time ridding the PC as much as possible of telemetry, bloat, unnecessary startup programs etc. inherent in Windows 10. I also performed a Hackintosh on an extra drive and run Mac OSX High Sierra on it. That was the most tricky part about getting my setup going. But after a lot of trial and error as well as reading a bunch of threads, it is working. 8) This is a backup PC for me (my main having a 7700k CPU with a 1080 ti EVGA hybrid card and 32 GB DDR4 RAM) -- a project I intended to put together for a friend who's heavily into Mac products but whom refused it when I offered via text, but a challenge I'd already decided to take on. So I haven't actually done too much messing with it or played any games yet. But it works well so far for each thing I've tried as well as the standard web surfing, etc., and I gladly discovered I needed to enable hyper threading in the BIOS. The X versions of the Xeon chips, from my understanding, aren't unlocked as some of the W versions are, so trying to overclock them on an OEM board such as the Dell T3500 pretty much doesn't work or only barely (whereas I understand that they can be overclocked on various non-OEM boards. But they allow adding more RAM (again, from what I've read). My setup came with four 2 GB sticks of RAM. I happened to have two sticks of 8 GB PNY RAM sitting around. Just out of curiosity, I threw them in, and ALL the sticks work together, though of course the two 8 GB sticks don't run at individual higher speeds than the original 2 GB sticks. But the machine is definitely more snappy with 24 GB. 8) I WOULD end up trying more 8 GB sticks of RAM, upgrading the GPU to something like an RX 580 (I currently have an AMD R9 280 in it), and possibly even upgrading further to something like an X5690 CPU and/or swapping out for a different motherboard like an mATX version that could be overclocked and added to a Bitfenix sort of Mac-looking Prodigy case if I didn't already have my main system. But if I were to upgrade things that cost a fair amount more money, personally I'd probably rather invest that money into something like saving for a Ryzen setup when their new CPU's come out. I think these old systems are very cool for the price, though, and the challenge of modding them can be fun (though at times also frustrating, lol). Really, with just a little effort, they can pretty much do what most people would likely need a PC for, including plenty of gaming.
You have seriously opened my eyes to buying used hardware. I am definitely going to recommend my friends build with used parts if they are on a budget. I actually just bought some used parts and build a sedondary/home server PC. Awesome channel, keep it up!
Yes, i like these full nerdy vlogs :) 1) Huntkey...i would replace that PSU because 1 person on the forum i visit reguarly (ltt) had it blow up on him as well as my friend who bought one for a super cheap build also had a small fire start due to the psu. 2) Good stuff for under 500$. Here in austria even used parts are more than brand new ones in the US XD 3) If you work in a school (in japan), who would you consider to be your boss? 4) Biostar do still make motherboards, but they are not selling very well. They did infact release the first motherboard with usb 3.1 type c on it, the Gaming Z97X.

WOAH! must see this thing benchmarked in games! obviously through cinebench it is a total monster but lets see how it functions in everyday use first. excited for the results ALSO - This video style appeals to me. I (and I think many others) don't need the large production value. Its very appreciated but I think all the nerds here just want to see you playing with the components and chips and I actually really value a larger video personally so its great for me and I'm sure spending 20 hours a week editing must get tiring haha. I look forward to the next videos with this. I don't think i'll be building many 8350 budget builds for friends anymore if this works out

I will get it under some heavy tuning and benchmarking most likely early next week (when I get some time). Can't wait though as I feel I can get this to 4.4, possibly 4.5 :P, though honestly a better power supply is probably a must lol, still happy I got it to 4.1 with a rando PSU/ mediocre board.
I'm the OG PC enthuiest, the overclocking really took off with core 2 duo, x38 was Intel's first X chipset so much fun with Asus and gigabyte boards back then, the amount of copper on the gigabyte boards s was insane! also the p35 and p45 platforms we're alot of fun. I've had x38, x48, x58, x79, and x99.

One thing I want to add though. Biostar still makes motherboards, and they're not even bad, just pretty unknown.

Tech YES City I haven't actually used one lately my assumption that they are "not even bad" was based on reviews I read. But I stumbled across their boards quite a few times lately. Maybe this ( www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=784 ) would be interesting to review. And here is a review of one of their FM2+ offerings from techpowerup ( www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Biostar/Hi-Fi_A88W_3D/ ). It might be interesting to review something that's not ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI or AsRock. It also seems like they do focus quite a bit on audio quality (a lot of their boards do have a "hifi" in their names), so that might be something that you'd like to check out.

YES, I do appreciate the detail, because this processor caught my attention just like it caught yours and I wanted some baseline recommended settings that I could begin with and then tweak. Also, I greatly enjoy brainstorming the optimal budget workstation.
+Jim Don't buy the 5680's dude. They are the exact same bin as the 5650,5660 and 5670, they all overclock to the same amount with the exact same TDP. I have a 5670 myself. Go with dual x5650's.
+Neil Hepburn ive heard otherwise about being the same bin, but yeah in a dual motherboard you wont be able to overclock unless you are lucky to find a sr-2 motherboard on ebay for 400+. otherwise it makes sense to find a better model for dual purpose, i found a set of two 5670s on ebay for 180 dollars, which comes out to about 10 dollars more per cpu compared to doing it with the x5650s. but me personally i would rather get a single one of these cpus and overclock the shit out of it, some of these ones pushed past 4.5Ghz perform close to two of them at stock, and you also get better single thread performance
not true, the X56XX all have a diffirent CPU ratio: X5650: 22 X5660: 23 X5670: 24 X5675: 25 X5680: 26 X5690: 27 these CPU's will overclock better with a higher ratio, i got my X5650 at only 4,5Ghz at 1,5v what is high for 4,5Ghz, and my X5675 does 4,5Ghz at 1,4v stable, although i got the X5675 at 4,8Ghz at 1,5v and got a 1069
The "first" RAM Slots (seing from the CPU) NEVER work alone! These only work when on the other ones are occupied as well! Seing from triple channel POV. Look into the manual, it is the same on MSI x58.
That harddrive enclosure is actually heatsink, it moves the heat to the enclosure and from there to the case or air. Also the CPU heatsink has got Nickel plated copper base, nickel plating have just weared off.
This is so dope. I'm still on an old x58 (sabertooth)/ i7 960(@3.8) that honestly still serves me okay for my uses (programming, recording including using amp sims and vst's, emulation and VM's, older games). Been thinking of upgrading to a newer i7 platform, but being a student currently that's a pretty pricey deal.....This looks like a viable upgrade for under 100 bucks. Might pop a 1050 ti into it too, to replace the ole' trusty HD6950.

I agree. I've seen many LGA 1366 CPUs like the i7 965 and Xeons for cheap, but the good mobos at a cheap price are scarce. I saw a Rampage III Black for $400+; it looked so good but for that price, X99 with USB 3.1 is so much better.
A friend of my mother's was getting rid of his PC and I said I wanted it. He said okay. I was expecting an office PC that I could canibalize for a stronger PSU. What I got (and did not expect) was an ASUS P6T WS Pro system with an i7 950, 12 GB of RAM and (small world) a GTX 285. It worked fine until I disassembled it and cleaned it because it was dusty as hell. Dense black dust all over. Cleaned everything, discovered the 850W PSU inside it (Antec CP-850) and reassembled it. Only now it doesn't work. I suspect it's the CPU as the PCB is slightly bent in the middle, almost like the weight of the cooler or the design of the socket were bending it, which I am pretty sure was not the case. I got an extra 2 GB of RAM for my FX-6300 machine anyway, so I'm relatively happy. I also want to jump on a 22€ deal for an X5650 (which is compatible with the board, I checked) to see if the problem lies with the CPU or the board. I don't own any other LGA1366 CPUs at the moment but I don't think it's the motherboard, apart from posting it turns on for a short time, some diagnostic LEDs on the board flash and the green power LED on the board is always on. I'll have to see if the machine works with the Xeon or if it's the board that's giving me problems. Ahh, the world of the bargain...
Companies will put a spray on the copper to stop corrosion. Its to help them with their profitability, because they cant have the copper turning green on the shelf while they are waiting for you to buy it. Its a good idea to remove it before adding paste.
I actually just bought my brother an HP Z400 workstation with an x5650 in it and he's super happy with it running Apex Legends at like 100fps. He's coming over from console, so the performance is blowing his mind and I only paid like $180 for it (not counting a GPU I already had).
Man those deals in japan are so good I'm actually jealous. I live here in the Philippines and the deals here are so bad. We don't even have that xeon here. I'm intrigued to know what case you have this running in and amount/type/timings of your ram--- if it's not much of a bother.. I have the same config from what your commented, seeing similar temps--- but I have to back off at 4.2. I am running a 660ti with it how ever, but that has no impact on what's being discussed. Also wondering if you turned things like C-step and other inherent 'intel' abilities off in the bios. That seems to be the key to reaching higher speeds. Thanks for your time, help, consideration if you see this.

Change from E8500 to X5460 jumped performance a lot. Temps under controll with Noctua D14. Overclock to 4GHz Vcore 1,33V; 48 C idle, 55 avg, 67 C max. Now I'm playing with GTX 770 with avg. 50-60 FPS in Fallout 4 in High settings

Lucky you scoring that motherboard for so cheap! I had to dish out $140 just for my motherboard, but it was worth it. Maybe you can do a comparison for it vs your new xeon or 4670k. Also you should checkout refurbished Topysync monitors on Ebay. They are $180 for a 1440p monitor, which is crazy cheap.

Paddy B yes a 650 ti works. However There are a few problems. I bought a cheap Soundcard (PCI) and it didnt work. I dont know if its the soundcard or the Motherboard. Then i bought a case by Intel for this Motherboard and in combination i had Fan controlling issues (they were always at fullspeed). I ended with only using one Fan at all because of the noise. And last, i dont think these multicore-multiprocesser Mainboards are that good for gaming. I use it for computational Problems. I dont Play games myself only xplane11 from time to time.
Why don't you put the voltages on auto man? The consumer always knows what power to get or at least this is what I do on my LGA775 :)) got my Q6600 to 2.7 GHz on the stock cooler and it is stable and pretty cool.

However, I do have the same motherboard as your video. then I also decided to buy the x5650, found it on ebay for $65. However I followed your instructions and no success. the only difference is the Ram G.Skill F3-12800CL9T-12GBRL DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Timing 9-9-9-24. I can't get pass the boot screen.

I have the MSI x58 Eclipse with the x5650 and it cant raise cpu volts.I put a +0,250volts and it stays at stock cpu volts between 0,9 to 1,2.If you have any suggestions would be great cuz i love this old xeons.And also keep up the great work Bryan
The first bank only works on x58 if u have all other slots populated I'm pretty sure. I have had two x58 boards and at first the first slot doesn't seem to be working either

so what im looking at doing is buying a dual socket motherboard (you can get them on ebay with an x5650 already in it) for about 175$, then buy a second x5650. Then get about 16GB of ddr3 ram. I am wondering if this would be a good upgrade from an fx-6300 based gaming rig.
That's a nice pc at a low budget. I managed to get a fully build system with mouse & keyboard (i7 2600k, cheapo assus mobo, 2x4 GB hyperX furry I think, 1 TB hdd, 300GB pretty old intel ssd I believe it's 300 or 320 series or something, corsair TX750 PSU, amd 6950 I believe for the GPU, DVD drive, Case that looks decent from the outside but when you open it up it makes you wants to pull your hair out, A legit win 7 license, a razer blackwidow keyboard and a razer deathadder) all for just 350 euros (300 for the pc and 50 for the keyboard & mouse :P.

Tech YES City The photos looked pretty shitty and in the description it said the case was broken, with this he ment there was a little piece of the side panel a little bit bend so you couldn't close it completely. I fixed this by smacking the pc with a hammer in the middle of the night (litterly) so now you don't see anything of it anymore. I called less then an hour after the ad was placed online and the guy told me he already aranged with I belive 2 people to buy the pc, I responded like "I am comming where you at now?" so I ended up buying it first. The case was full of dust and cat hears when I got it but I cleaned all of that out with a dust blower so everything is nice and shiny once again ^^

Do you think you can make an video with latest/past gen Xeon CPUs? 2011v3 socket, some of them are cheap on ebay, but still have 10-14 cores at low frequency. (xeon e5-2683,2670) See how high you can oc it to. I would love to see an economic beast. 20+ threads @ 4.0GHz.
+IittIe bee you're probably looking at the engineering samples which were released for testing and samples and crap before the retail version, most of the time you need a specific motherboard and bios version for them to work, and there are still bugs which can cause data loss and other problems. not to mention its illegal to own them
Some X58 boards will support the Xeon even if it doesn't say so. I have a W3680 and an Asus P6T it only list i7 support but I managed 4.54Ghz with the Xeon
That's because the xeons weren't of interest upon the release of the 32nm 6 cores and they added support through the bios but never updated the compatibility list.
You've probably been asked this question before (probably without real specifics maybe) but would it be worth getting this CPU and clocking it to 4Ghz for gaming/streaming compared to buying an i7 6700k? The price difference is definitely a factor in my decision, and seeing this performance from a $60 CPU, I think it could work really well to stream and play high end games.

92kosta P2414H, still deciding what to do with it though, the input lag tests I ran were an absolute mind bend. I will say though the AG coating is fantastic on the dell, first matte coating I actually REALLY like.

You can get 5 to 4 pin fan header adapters off ebay or Amazon (mine took like a couple weeks to arrive from China but were worth the wait and work well, though I saw after I had already placed the order that some could have been bought within the US, as well). I currently have a 4-pin LED fan working in place of the standard lower front case fan and will replace the other front case fan, as well. I also have another 5 to 4 pin fan header adapter running into a 4 pin fan splitter cable that I use to run the 2 fans on the heat sink. And I used a molex to 4 pin adapter to run an extra case fan at the upper back part of the case.
I also swapped out the heavy Dell case for an ATX case -- a cheap Corsair Versa H22 Plus case that I had sitting around. The T3500 motherboard is a fair amount wider from front to back than a standard ATX motherboard (I've heard of some others using some other form factor cases such as an eATX, though I hadn't tried those, myself). So I had to drill out the rivets on my Corsair case that held the drive bays in, removing them to make physical room for the Dell motherboard. 4 screw mount holes line up perfectly, so the board seems fairly secure. The main headache of the T3500 motherboard is that it must be connected to the front I/O panel that comes with the Dell. I tried rigging up just the 2 pins that work for the power button to the Corsair's own power button. Though that did work to allow an initial turning off of the PC, without the front I/O panel connected fully properly, the PC will automatically start up with the power button on the back of the power supply turned on and gives an error message that can be bypassed.
I'd looked into this issue for some time with no real satisfactory answers. So it seemed to me the only logical thing to do would be to figure out how best to add the Dell I/O front panel to my Corsair case setup.
Because my Corsair case had metal mesh 5 1/4" front drive covers, I used a dremel tool to cut out a slot that fits the Dell I/O panel's main part (the 2 USB slots, 2 jacks, recessed power button, and little LED lights). I then bought black weather strip tape to wrap around the I/O panel part, itself, then I fit that into a cardboard fox that one of the fans had come with. Then I used grip tape on the left and right parts of the cardboard box so that it would grip onto the metal mesh cover. And the metal mesh cover also has little tabs that hold on a piece of foam. But I took out the foam and used those little metal tabs bent over to help hold the cardboard box in place. It actually works well so far and looks nice, though I'd prefer to have a proper metal or plastic enclosure for the I/O panel. But I think this setup will work fine for the foreseeable future.
I may find something like a little metal cover that fits over the end of a writing pen to push onto the power button to see if it will stick out enough to be able to push without using a pencil to push the power button on.
My Dell came with Windows 7. I found a TH-cam video claiming an upgrade from 7 to 10 could still be done for free. And it did indeed do so for me, though that still involved the usual headache of spending some time ridding the PC as much as possible of telemetry, bloat, unnecessary startup programs etc. inherent in Windows 10. I also performed a Hackintosh on an extra drive and run Mac OSX High Sierra on it. That was the most tricky part about getting my setup going. But after a lot of trial and error as well as reading a bunch of threads, it is working. 8)
This is a backup PC for me (my main having a 7700k CPU with a 1080 ti EVGA hybrid card and 32 GB DDR4 RAM) -- a project I intended to put together for a friend who's heavily into Mac products but whom refused it when I offered via text, but a challenge I'd already decided to take on. So I haven't actually done too much messing with it or played any games yet. But it works well so far for each thing I've tried as well as the standard web surfing, etc., and I gladly discovered I needed to enable hyper threading in the BIOS. The X versions of the Xeon chips, from my understanding, aren't unlocked as some of the W versions are, so trying to overclock them on an OEM board such as the Dell T3500 pretty much doesn't work or only barely (whereas I understand that they can be overclocked on various non-OEM boards. But they allow adding more RAM (again, from what I've read). My setup came with four 2 GB sticks of RAM. I happened to have two sticks of 8 GB PNY RAM sitting around. Just out of curiosity, I threw them in, and ALL the sticks work together, though of course the two 8 GB sticks don't run at individual higher speeds than the original 2 GB sticks. But the machine is definitely more snappy with 24 GB. 8)
I WOULD end up trying more 8 GB sticks of RAM, upgrading the GPU to something like an RX 580 (I currently have an AMD R9 280 in it), and possibly even upgrading further to something like an X5690 CPU and/or swapping out for a different motherboard like an mATX version that could be overclocked and added to a Bitfenix sort of Mac-looking Prodigy case if I didn't already have my main system. But if I were to upgrade things that cost a fair amount more money, personally I'd probably rather invest that money into something like saving for a Ryzen setup when their new CPU's come out. I think these old systems are very cool for the price, though, and the challenge of modding them can be fun (though at times also frustrating, lol). Really, with just a little effort, they can pretty much do what most people would likely need a PC for, including plenty of gaming.
You have seriously opened my eyes to buying used hardware. I am definitely going to recommend my friends build with used parts if they are on a budget. I actually just bought some used parts and build a sedondary/home server PC. Awesome channel, keep it up!

1) Huntkey...i would replace that PSU because 1 person on the forum i visit reguarly (ltt) had it blow up on him as well as my friend who bought one for a super cheap build also had a small fire start due to the psu.

I'm the OG PC enthuiest, the overclocking really took off with core 2 duo, x38 was Intel's first X chipset so much fun with Asus and gigabyte boards back then, the amount of copper on the gigabyte boards s was insane! also the p35 and p45 platforms we're alot of fun. I've had x38, x48, x58, x79, and x99.

I haven't actually used one lately my assumption that they are "not even bad" was based on reviews I read. But I stumbled across their boards quite a few times lately. Maybe this ( www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=784 ) would be interesting to review. And here is a review of one of their FM2+ offerings from techpowerup ( www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Biostar/Hi-Fi_A88W_3D/ ). It might be interesting to review something that's not ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI or AsRock. It also seems like they do focus quite a bit on audio quality (a lot of their boards do have a "hifi" in their names), so that might be something that you'd like to check out.

+Jim Don't buy the 5680's dude. They are the exact same bin as the 5650,5660 and 5670, they all overclock to the same amount with the exact same TDP. I have a 5670 myself. Go with dual x5650's.
+Neil Hepburn ive heard otherwise about being the same bin, but yeah in a dual motherboard you wont be able to overclock unless you are lucky to find a sr-2 motherboard on ebay for 400+. otherwise it makes sense to find a better model for dual purpose, i found a set of two 5670s on ebay for 180 dollars, which comes out to about 10 dollars more per cpu compared to doing it with the x5650s. but me personally i would rather get a single one of these cpus and overclock the shit out of it, some of these ones pushed past 4.5Ghz perform close to two of them at stock, and you also get better single thread performance

X5660: 23
X5670: 24
X5675: 25

these CPU's will overclock better with a higher ratio, i got my X5650 at only 4,5Ghz at 1,5v what is high for 4,5Ghz, and my X5675 does 4,5Ghz at 1,4v stable, although i got the X5675 at 4,8Ghz at 1,5v and got a 1069

These only work when on the other ones are occupied as well! Seing from triple channel POV. Look into the manual, it is the same on MSI x58.
That harddrive enclosure is actually heatsink, it moves the heat to the enclosure and from there to the case or air.
Also the CPU heatsink has got Nickel plated copper base, nickel plating have just weared off.

I'm still on an old x58 (sabertooth)/ i7 960(@3.8) that honestly still serves me okay for my uses (programming, recording including using amp sims and vst's, emulation and VM's, older games). Been thinking of upgrading to a newer i7 platform, but being a student currently that's a pretty pricey deal.....This looks like a viable upgrade for under 100 bucks. Might pop a 1050 ti into it too, to replace the ole' trusty HD6950.

I agree. I've seen many LGA 1366 CPUs like the i7 965 and Xeons for cheap, but the good mobos at a cheap price are scarce. I saw a Rampage III Black for $400+; it looked so good but for that price, X99 with USB 3.1 is so much better.

A friend of my mother's was getting rid of his PC and I said I wanted it. He said okay. I was expecting an office PC that I could canibalize for a stronger PSU. What I got (and did not expect) was an ASUS P6T WS Pro system with an i7 950, 12 GB of RAM and (small world) a GTX 285. It worked fine until I disassembled it and cleaned it because it was dusty as hell. Dense black dust all over. Cleaned everything, discovered the 850W PSU inside it (Antec CP-850) and reassembled it. Only now it doesn't work. I suspect it's the CPU as the PCB is slightly bent in the middle, almost like the weight of the cooler or the design of the socket were bending it, which I am pretty sure was not the case. I got an extra 2 GB of RAM for my FX-6300 machine anyway, so I'm relatively happy. I also want to jump on a 22€ deal for an X5650 (which is compatible with the board, I checked) to see if the problem lies with the CPU or the board. I don't own any other LGA1366 CPUs at the moment but I don't think it's the motherboard, apart from posting it turns on for a short time, some diagnostic LEDs on the board flash and the green power LED on the board is always on. I'll have to see if the machine works with the Xeon or if it's the board that's giving me problems. Ahh, the world of the bargain...
Companies will put a spray on the copper to stop corrosion. Its to help them with their profitability, because they cant have the copper turning green on the shelf while they are waiting for you to buy it. Its a good idea to remove it before adding paste.

I actually just bought my brother an HP Z400 workstation with an x5650 in it and he's super happy with it running Apex Legends at like 100fps. He's coming over from console, so the performance is blowing his mind and I only paid like $180 for it (not counting a GPU I already had).

I have the same config from what your commented, seeing similar temps--- but I have to back off at 4.2. I am running a 660ti with it how ever, but that has no impact on what's being discussed.
Also wondering if you turned things like C-step and other inherent 'intel' abilities off in the bios. That seems to be the key to reaching higher speeds. Thanks for your time, help, consideration if you see this.

About the VGA connection newer LCD has higher input lag because it has to convert the Analog to Digital signal and the VGA crystal has some delay.

Change from E8500 to X5460 jumped performance a lot. Temps under controll with Noctua D14. Overclock to 4GHz Vcore 1,33V; 48 C idle, 55 avg, 67 C max. Now I'm playing with GTX 770 with avg. 50-60 FPS in Fallout 4 in High settings

Also you should checkout refurbished Topysync monitors on Ebay. They are $180 for a 1440p monitor, which is crazy cheap.

Paddy B yes a 650 ti works. However There are a few problems. I bought a cheap Soundcard (PCI) and it didnt work. I dont know if its the soundcard or the Motherboard. Then i bought a case by Intel for this Motherboard and in combination i had Fan controlling issues (they were always at fullspeed). I ended with only using one Fan at all because of the noise. And last, i dont think these multicore-multiprocesser Mainboards are that good for gaming. I use it for computational Problems. I dont Play games myself only xplane11 from time to time.
Why don't you put the voltages on auto man? The consumer always knows what power to get or at least this is what I do on my LGA775 :)) got my Q6600 to 2.7 GHz on the stock cooler and it is stable and pretty cool.

However I followed your instructions and no success. the only difference is the Ram G.Skill F3-12800CL9T-12GBRL DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Timing 9-9-9-24. I can't get pass the boot screen.

so what im looking at doing is buying a dual socket motherboard (you can get them on ebay with an x5650 already in it) for about 175$, then buy a second x5650. Then get about 16GB of ddr3 ram. I am wondering if this would be a good upgrade from an fx-6300 based gaming rig.
That's a nice pc at a low budget. I managed to get a fully build system with mouse & keyboard (i7 2600k, cheapo assus mobo, 2x4 GB hyperX furry I think, 1 TB hdd, 300GB pretty old intel ssd I believe it's 300 or 320 series or something, corsair TX750 PSU, amd 6950 I believe for the GPU, DVD drive, Case that looks decent from the outside but when you open it up it makes you wants to pull your hair out, A legit win 7 license, a razer blackwidow keyboard and a razer deathadder) all for just 350 euros (300 for the pc and 50 for the keyboard & mouse :P.

Tech YES City The photos looked pretty shitty and in the description it said the case was broken, with this he ment there was a little piece of the side panel a little bit bend so you couldn't close it completely. I fixed this by smacking the pc with a hammer in the middle of the night (litterly) so now you don't see anything of it anymore.
I called less then an hour after the ad was placed online and the guy told me he already aranged with I belive 2 people to buy the pc, I responded like "I am comming where you at now?" so I ended up buying it first.
The case was full of dust and cat hears when I got it but I cleaned all of that out with a dust blower so everything is nice and shiny once again ^^

+IittIe bee you're probably looking at the engineering samples which were released for testing and samples and crap before the retail version, most of the time you need a specific motherboard and bios version for them to work, and there are still bugs which can cause data loss and other problems. not to mention its illegal to own them

Dual x5650 in 2019
Some X58 boards will support the Xeon even if it doesn't say so. I have a W3680 and an Asus P6T it only list i7 support but I managed 4.54Ghz with the Xeon
That's because the xeons weren't of interest upon the release of the 32nm 6 cores and they added support through the bios but never updated the compatibility list.
You've probably been asked this question before (probably without real specifics maybe) but would it be worth getting this CPU and clocking it to 4Ghz for gaming/streaming compared to buying an i7 6700k? The price difference is definitely a factor in my decision, and seeing this performance from a $60 CPU, I think it could work really well to stream and play high end games.

Where did you buy your motherboard? The only SLI x58s I can find are like $200.

Hello YESS MEN :D Should i plug 8pin cpu power cable for the cpu to be able to OC it, or 4pin could be enough? i have a psu that only has 4pin. Need to change?

I love my P2414H. It's was the best monitor I could buy in my country for around $200.
92kosta P2414H, still deciding what to do with it though, the input lag tests I ran were an absolute mind bend. I will say though the AG coating is fantastic on the dell, first matte coating I actually REALLY like.
