A superbly explained and well paced tutorial video. One of the best I’ve seen, literally ever. Inspired by your overclock, I, like countless others who have commented on this video purchased a Xeon 5670 and overclocked it while watching your video. In fact it’s so well done that I still come back to it now and then to do some tweaking. Well done @michaelcooper.
Found this very helpful as I had changed from an i7 920 to an x5650 on a P6T. Chickened out of ocing it back then, but this was a really well explained and systematic approach. I tried DRAM bus voltage on Auto and that was stable, but as the Bios help suggests the Auto range can go far higher than the max voltage you state I went back to manual 1.6 (stress testing right now - will go to 1.64 if needed). The original i7 build came from a shop and they seem to have done a good job with air cooling from back then. Running only in 60s with Prime95 and Cinebench. I’m using Twilight Render plus Prime95 for a longer stress test since that will run much longer than Cinebench.
nicely done. and we are all our own worst critic. going back and watching ur old videos urself and being satisfied with what was conveyed. thats pretty rare!
I'm running my Xeon X5670 @4,56Ghz stable with Mac OS X 10.14.5 (Mojave). Geekbench3 scores about 21000pts. This old 6 core CPU is still great and quite capable, it's an overclocking beast. My motherboard is Gigabyte X58A-UD7 rev.1 with 24Gb DDR3 1600. Also Cinebench scores over 1000, not bad for a nearly 10yo machine.....
Very good video I managed to get 4.2ghz stable so I left it at that , video is amazingly put together and it's always my go-to when I reset my BIOS lol keep em coming
Great vid thanks for taking the time to make it - worked great for being able to get a solid 4.0GHz on my X5675 on a X58-UD3R Bios FH - could have gone higher but at idle when its down clocks I am sitting at the highest core @ 32°C on a H100I V2 @ 2.1GHz and I am not a speed freak so its good for now. I guess it was smart that I kept these 2 old X58-UD3R's around and picked up a pair of X5675's for 56$ and a 24GB matched set of G Skill Rip Jaws 1600MHz for $105 shipped off the bay anyway I digress - Thanks for the info
I'm preparing to build an Asus p6t deluxe v2. Got upgrade used parts at Amazon: x5675 for $29.95, G Skill Ripjaws (3x4gb set) 1600MHz for $65.00, and a CM 212 Evo. OCZ Gold 3x2gb 1600mhz kit came with used MB combo, I hope I can run these RAM's together, and later pick up another Ripjaws 12gb kit. $105 was a good deal, while I found x5675 dirt cheap, I've been seeing $150+ for 24gb kit.
Hello Michael. Two questions: you stated at 5:28 that the UCLK should be double the RAM speed. Then at 20:38 when you raise the RAM speed you don’t change the UCLK? Second question: Should I set the QPI link back to auto at the end of the overclock or should I leave it at the slowest possible as you stated ? Thanks. And great video. Helped me a lot.
Good questions if you're going for mild overclocking keep the UCLK at double the DRAM but I like the reverse approach set the QPI link to the lowest setting and set the UCLK to half the QPI link speed but first determine or set the DRAM frequency as high as it will boot with everything set to auto and manually set the appropriate DDR voltage and timings. never use auto for the ram voltage it can overvolt damaging the memory controller once you reach stable performance target you can try raising the UCLK on step up at a time for performance increase just keep an eye out for stability issues, you could try setting the QPI to auto at this point, but it will likely fail just keep it set to the lowest setting
Great video! This is my exact PC and CPUs! I've been wondering about overclocking for over 2 years. And with the bonus! I've also been needing to disable c state and power boost since I purchased the machine also to no avail! Love you, thank you!
Fantastic video thank you! I've done quite a bit of overclocking but there were a few key things in this video that really filled in the blanks on this platform for me greatly appreciate it!
Just bought an old Xeon 5660 at a very low price, but impressed with its limits and capacity to overclock beyone 2.8 gHz -- thanks for the video, I book marked it in case I go that route!
thx michael i have now the same like you :) and it works soooo fineeeeee asus p6t deluxe v2 and xeon 5670 24gb ddr 3 1600 and the cpu is whatercooooled :) i watched your toutorial about 3 times your explaining is simply the best ;)
Thanks for the video, I watched with lots of attention. Going to copy your methodology. Have ordered an x5650 for my Asus Rampage 3 Formula. Currently have i7950 @ 3.7Ghz.
good companion motherboard, I have this and I have it like this, until today nothing to envy to the PC of now fotos.subefotos.com/ca6678389fd7177bdff818aae87a8d67o.png
It's best to run the ram at 1600 and your base clock 200. Then a 21 multi will be a safe and optimal 4200mhz. The CPU rarely needs more than 1.3v for that speed so you can try and drop the vcore to also bring temps down
If it's running in the 80'sC that is a little high. Is that when you are running your programs or while you're testing with prime95 or something similar? If it is with your programs you might try lowering the voltage to the CPU and see if is still stable at 4.01GHz. If is just when running prime95 I wouldn't worry about it. In that case what is the CPU temp when running your programs?
Michael Cooper that is with CPU z on stress and cinebench running too 100% load doesn't go over 80c nice at 4.01ghz , I did go to 4.6 had it running for 5 mins did what you did and come down a little every time also I have a great mobo rampage extreme ii works great
Michael Cooper also I hand G skill ddr3 1600mhz ram 12gb I didn't know what to set the dram to ? I left to auto and runs fine but do in need to over clock ? That's for your help from the uk
Hey Michael, I noticed where you talk about CPU Spread Spectrum, you set it to ENABLED. But it clearly states that it should be DISABLED to enhance stability :)
Edvinas Edvinas Always turn off cpu spread spectrum and load line calibration :) You can oc your ram, but don't go too far and don't touch the voltage except if you know your ram is gaming ram/overclockable ram.
Edvinas Edvinas Obviously, you will need to put more voltage. I suggest you to watch videos that explain how overclocking works, because by the looks of it, you have no idea of what you're doing, and that's exactly how you fry a cpu.
@@imnota Nobody likes people with your attitude, it's repulsive. You can't fry a modern CPU unless you're really trying to, and the fact that you don't know that demonstrates how little you know.
Can I ask your actual settings just to help a brother out. I have a x5670 incoming with a decent air cooler. And I'm looking for a 3.8 to 3.9 overclock
Welp I now know what I did wrong! Thank you so much for this! I'm an AMD guy and I'm currently working on a X5680 / Asus P6T Build for a friend, it does okay at base clock but I wanna squeeze a little more out of it, and my dumb ass forgot to up the voltage. People like you are why the pc community is so great!
Hey guys, herew is the updated and improved version of this tutorial, recorded in 2020 and showing you how to get to AT LEAST 4.4Ghz. th-cam.com/video/Q6ck9WerreY/w-d-xo.html
@@ImWateringPSUs This video shows how to overclock a CPU on a very old platform. For a modern system what you want to do is do a search on TH-cam for your motherboard model number and the word overclock. You'll probably find a video with someone showing how to overclock your CPU on your particular motherboard.
@@MichaelTheComputerGuy Yeah man, that's good in general, but my video is about how to overclock this x58 Platform in general, not motherboard specific ;)
Most bios's when you up the voltage it will give you color indicators that will let you know if you're going too far. Green is fine, yellow for caution, red for danger.

Why I got my x5650 at base clock at 170 instead of 133 (without increasing voltages) and in the cinebench i get bit over 800, when i clock to 4ghz (increasing voltages and 200 base clock) I got over 1000 points in benchmark, what is wrong on this setup? I was thinking to upgrade the cpu to x5670 or x5675 to get better single threaded perfomance and being able to go over 4ghz, but what is the point when the results looks bit lower than expected. I use throtle stop to use turbo as well.
Michael thank you for the very informative video. I see now that on my P6T (non-se/non-deluxe) my CPU Ratio caps at 24.0x Would you recommend we simply use the highest CPU ratio available and adjust BCLK accordingly to reach, lets say 4.0ghz?
@@virtuous_pixel I have the same "sollution". I did not used the highest multiplier available. I managed to get a stable overclock at 4.6Ghz at 1.35 voltage with a BCLK of 200 and a multiplier of 23. I also have another CPU (i7 990x) same chipset running at 5Ghz with BCLK of 100 and a multipier of 50
Hello Michael. I'm pretty sure Spread Spectrum was a requirement to meet certain specification about interference resilience and it is usually better left Off as it can lead to instability and doesn't do anything in a home environment. There was a post about it on an OC forum where an HP engineer explained exactly the purpose but I can't find it. I took the exact same upgrade path as you from an i7 920 to the x5675 for 36$. I'm pretty happy about the change, it is a beast. But I find your voltages pretty high for a 4GHz OC, also your uncore frequency is set rather low. I believe the stock frequency for uncore is about 2.66GHz (133*20) and you have it set at 2.1 while the core is quite OCed. My setup is at 4.09Ghz (186*22), voltages are 1.225vcore, 1.225vtt and 1.8pll, uncore sits at 3.16GHz (186*17). It scored 940 on cinebench multi-threaded (970 at 4.2GHz)
@@JesseO-nh3us thanks! I'm waiting on a stick of ram to be delivered today and this evening I'm going to start testing some overclocking. I'll let you know how it goes and if you have time I'll write when I need help:) or you can pm me some ideas. Thanks again!
This video helped a lot. My I took my xeon x5670 straight to 3.5ghz, since if it can't do that as a minimum, i wasn't even going to bother. Worked great at 1.35v on the core, but hot, so i inched down the voltage AND upped the frequency, so it went to 3.6ghz, then 3.8ghz, and eventually to 4ghz easily. And i've been inching the core voltages down a little at a time. i run at just about 1.23v on the core at 4ghz. And it runs fairly cool. I could probably inch the core voltage down a little more too, which i'll do in the warmer months. I have a feeling it'll do 4ghz at under 1.2v. I use a Corsair H105 cooler though.
Nice. I'm about to upgrade to a x5650 from i7 920 (old C0/C1). The 920 can only get 3.61ghz @ 1.21v. Absolute max stable is 3.8ghz @1.35v. Voltage increase defo not worth the 200mhz but she's served me well as I bought when they were first released. Happy that I can continue to use my P6t Deluxe board which is still going strong, even with a few PSU blowouts.
The price difference between the x5650 and x5670, is usually small enough to just go with the x5670. lots of ebay sellers will accept offers. ^_^ i paid like $60 for mine.
A motherboard with 2 CPU sockets will be for a server. No overclocking allowed. That being said I suppose there may be a workstation motherboard with 2 CPU sockets that allows overclocking. You'd need to look in the bios for the settings shown in this video.
I ended up getting the 5650 because I didn't really need the extra multipliers. A weeks worth of tinkering has me at 4.26Ghz @ 1.208v HT off. Really happy with it. Also about 7-10C cooler than my 920.
Great video! Thanks Im going to try this on my x5675 liquid cooled... I have p6t SE and 16gigs of ram in dual channel.. would that affect the OC in any way? and I have Corsair CX650M PSU is that enought to OC it past 4ghz??
Unless you've got a 250+ watt GPU, you've got plenty of juice to do it; Right now I run an older, hungrier 130w xeon @4.2 and a 270x toxic (180w+) on a 550w PSU with no issues. I've read posts that the SE is struggling with higher BCLKs (FSBs) so you might need some patience to get it stable but on this chip, 4ghz should be granted. I'll have the exact P6T SE to play with in a few days so I'll come back with my experience :)
Hello. I have a question regarding overclocking. I know the movie is from many years ago. I have the same motherboard as in the movie, but the x5650 processor. if I set it like you, it will work for me ?? Thank you for your answer
Hi Michael, and before everything i want to congratulate you for this (and others) amazing video. I have the exactly the same Mobo, but my Xeon is a X5675. Can you please advise me some settings? Thanks in advance
My x5670 goes to 24 multiplier in the bios, will that make a difference? I have the Asus P6T6 WS Revolution, right know I only have the stock Intel cooler with the copper slug in the middle. temps is under 80C. might be able to get it to 3,6 or 3,7ghz but definitely need a better cooler. had a i7 950 before and already in csgo can I see there is a different even on stock clock, getting excited to see how much the overclock will give, it have run will I write this and so far after 12 min it seems stable on 3,5ghz @1,176Vcore (1,180V in bios). Definitely a very good video not many have made a good explanation for overclocking old cpus on older hardware.
sooo, after a bit of oc, i have got it on 4ghz @1,215Vcore. max temp on my stock Intel cooler is 90C. (I don't want to go higher before I get a better cooler) seems like I have got the golden X5670 ? the ram is running pretty much stock 1335Mhz. multiplier is 24 and the blck is 167
Very cool , I have a dual e5645 I need to try this on it! It’s a super micro motherboard I’m not sure if I have all the twinkle settings but I’m gonna check it out. Would be nice if I can get the 3.2 - 3.8 GHz
Actually, it has it wrong, I could get more out of it and leave it stable in 4.4 , this one is mine subefotos.com/ver/?ca6678389fd7177bdff818aae87a8d67o.png
Can you post the power consumption at the wall the you stress the CPU? This generation of processors were great overclockers but consumed a lot power. Brian said his system at 4GHz was consuming 700W (with a 970) which is too much for the PSU I have.
I like the shoot for the moon approach its faster to get stable overclock, I disable the spread spectrums you can enable them later if needed for RF interference, I found you really don't need to have UCLK double the DRAM frequency I set the UCLK to half the QPI Link data rate but first set the DRAM frequency as high as it will boot at stock clock speeds 1333 then set the QPI link data rate to the lowest setting above slow mode and set the UCLK to half the QPI clock and let the BCLK raise the frequencies from there to achieve Higher DRAM clock to match CPU overclock target lower the multiplier and raise the BCLK and manually adjust memory timings to match use AIDA64 to determine which timings are appropriate for the target memory speed. when I reach the highest overclock without overheating issues, I focus on tightening the memory timings one at a time for max performance and stability. IMHO prime 95 puts an unrealistic load on the system, I use core temp, along with cinebench R15, R20, AIDA 64, games and programs to test overclock stability. 3D mark is also good to validate performance increase, your CPU voltage can go higher then 1.35v safely 1.35v is just the auto voltage limit, the first thing that needs to be set to manual is the DRAM voltage! because leaving it set to auto can cause damage to the memory controller never exceed 1.65v I set it to whatever the modules are rated at and slowly raise or lower it for stability & efficiency' that's why I like to use a minimum of DDR3 1866 for overclocking , or under clock DDR3 2133 is better. X58 has a performance increase up to 2000 DRAM frequency going higher is pointless unless you need a little extra to achieve max BCLK-CPU core target but keep an eye on performance going over 2000 on DRAM frequency I'm no expert so please feel free to add or correct my comment Happy overclocking
Hey Micheal, are you really sure, that enabling CPU Spread Spectrum is really helpfull if it comes to BCLK Overclocking? Normally most of the guys running around @ the Internet are suggesting not to use it, because it leads to more BCLK fluctuations and may therefore raise the chance of an instability occuring.
maCS I'm not sure about that. It may be that having it off is better for stability. I suppose you could run a test and see if you can the base clock higher with or without the Spread Spectrum enabled.
Hi, o was thinking of making a new pc build using the same cpu and motherboard. I was wondering what bios version your motherboard was on which mafe it compatoble with the x5670
Abi Thampi I have the Asus p6t deluxe version one. It has the most recent bios on it. I'm not sure if a particular BIOS version is required for it to work with this CPU though.
im geting alot of this as second hand parts now and hoping for stable 4.0-4.1 Ghrz OC on a Liquid AIO so i shouldnt have cooling issues like hes had in this video but this is really in depth and im sure my parts can hold this considering the previos owner had it at 3.8 on Air because of around 80 C temps but AIO should keep in in the 80s at higher clocks
excellent... thanks a lot... it work... one more question: almost all Microsoft applications don't work at 4 GHz... Office 2016... (word, excel, onedrive...) Any idea? Thanks a lot... a lot of time saved... :)
Roberto Iosupescu If some programs don't work on your computer when the CPU is it 4Ghz that means it's not completely stable. I would try either raising the voltage on the CPU or backing off to 3.9 gigahertz.
Hi... i have a problem... i cant find the ai tweaker anywhere in the bios (i have some new 2017 AmMegatrends 2.6.... uefi bios ) idk if my cpu supports oc (xeon e5 1620(v1)) but ive heard that theese 16** xeons have unlocked multiplyer , can you please help me ?
Kristián Kalmár Your CPU is overclockable but it mostly depends on the motherboard and the BIOS as to whether or not it can actually be done. You have to have the proper settings in the motherboard's BIOS . If the computer came with a Xeon Processor it's most likely either a workstation or server which under most circumstances do not allow overclocking in the Bios. Also it looks like that's a 4 core 8 thread processor not a 16 core processor.

Hi, i got a little bit of a problem, i cant seem to overclock my x5650 without having the QPI/DRAM voltage set at 1.6 volts. Do any of you have any idea of how to get that lower? I can have it running stable at 4ghz with a multi of 20 and a bclk of 200.
Great set of Videos. I have the Asus p6t SE with the Xeon 5670 with exactly the same config you have used. Michael Cooper, you seem very knowledgeable concerning these CPUs. Do you happen to know if it's possible to do this in a Dell Precision T5500? I think I would need to flash a completely different BIOS to the motherboard so that I can actually OC it. Is this possible?
You're right about needing to change the BIOS. I don't have any expertise in that. A google search for T5500 custom BIOS would find anyone who has already done this.
I'll give that a try, thanks. The reason I'm attempting this is because I can get the CPUs for cheap on eBay, and I already have the T5500... If I were to purchase a motherboard that supports dual LGA 1366 like the T5500 does it would likely cost me much more than simply buying the two CPUs, making it not worth the time and money.
Michael Cooper One of the best, well thought out, well paced and explained tutorials I’ve seen in a while. You have a knack for this stuff! I previously had an identical setup, with the help of your video I jumped from a first gen i7 920 to a Xeon 5670 (which I actually bought after I saw your video) OC’d to 4GHZ. The Patriot Viper triple channel ram is also running at a faster speed. All the components are sitting on a P6T Deluxe board with bios 2209.
Why did you use such a bad cooler? (Freezer 7 Pro v2?)Wouldn't it be more stable at lower temps. Most aio or even a Noctua 14/15 would cut the temps by 20 degrees at least. Have you gone back at tried with a better cooling solution?
Pholiage Even at the highest overclock the temperatures weren't close to the TJ Maxx. I did install a much larger air cooler which brought the temperatures down and more importantly for me the noise down. I don't recommend all in one water coolers. They do give you lower temperatures but there are more things to go wrong with all-in-one water coolers or water coolers in general. Aside from the fan failing there's also the pump and possible leaks. When you think of one leaking most people think there's going to be a bunch of liquid being spilled inside the computer and ruining components. It's more likely that a very very small leak will happen and the liquid will simply evaporate. That leaves your CPU temperatures going through the roof. I've been working with computers for 20 years and in that time I've only come across two CPUs that failed. Both were caused by overheating after a small leak developed in the all-in-one water cooler.
if you need some help getting a decent usable overclock from your X 5670 or any Xeon go to www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/xeon-owners-club.211143/ at this site you will find people who actually know what they are talking about.
I have my old Asus Rampage Extreme 3 running the i7 920 as my htpc for my bedroom. I am wondering if it would be worth putting an x5670 cpu in there for $35. I don't play games on it at all. I do notice when playing 4k video the fans kick in and the cpu heats up. I have a GTX 960 in it.
I have the rampage 2 extreme I got the number wrong. I don't know if a Xeon will work on that board. Do you know where I can find out because google is telling me yes and no.
I have my i7 920 for 9 years and its working @3.6ghz for an year 24/7. By now i have no problem with the cpu, but i am thinking for a little upgrade. I have the same asus p6t delux mb /bought with the cpu/ and want to try this xeon 5670 and i know it's comparable to mb, but there is a xeon 5690. Is it wise to go for 5690 with same motherboard?
There are people running 5690s on P6Ts on the web so it shouldn't be an issue. That chip, however, is rated at 130 watts (perhaps due to the higher stock clock) so would need better cooling, and I doubt the 200-300Mhz more clock before cpu chip/mobo limitations kick in warrants a 2x-3x price over a 5650 or a 5660, which happily reach 4Ghz in almost all cases. I'd advise you to grab a cheap one and be done with it unless you're looking to break records, and then still there are no guarantees, so its really no use paying the premium for a daily rig.
Thanks for this awesome video. I'll be sure to refer to it this weekend, when my X5670 shows up and I retire the 920 that's on my P6T SE board currently. How does your cooler compare to a Hyper 212 EVO? You think I'd be ok with an EVO to 4Ghz?
Patrick Sjöholm The cooler I had at the time of making this video was good enough. I replaced it in a later video because I wanted to lower the noise level. A Hyper 212 Evo will do just fine. You never can tell how well any given CPU will overclock. I think 4 gigahertz is most likely doable.
Thanks for the reply. I finally received my X5670 and plugged it into the board and fired her up....unfortunately, the PC did nothing at all. No post, no monitor output, no ability to get into the BIOS, it just sat there with the fans and lights running. I put the 920 back in, as I was worried I fried my system, but the 920 fired right back up. So, not sure if I have a bad X5670 or if there is another issue. Difference between your system and mine is the SE VS Deluxe. I did notice I was not on the latest BIOS, so I just updated the BIOS to 0908, the latest one available for the SE, and will try again tonight to see if that helps. Yours seems to provide newer BIOS updates, as I see you are on 2209. There's nothing else magical that you did to get this to work, right? I mean, I should at least get a post warning of some sort with the X5670 in there? Sucks that I have no other way to test this chip to see if I just got sold a bad one... Thanks for any input you can provide.
Found your other video, that actually talks about installing it, and you brought me to the support page for the P6T SE and the supported CPUs. Noticed that the 6 core Core I7s were not supported with the BIOS I was on, so I feel good about this BIOS update working. Keep you posted tonight, once I try the swap out again.
Not all of them. You need to look at the BIOS and see if it has the setting shown in this video. If the settings are there you could overclock it. If you're looking for a motherboard to do the overclocking go to the manufacturer's website and download the service manual. It should show all the BIOS settings available.

I wouldn't recommend buying a new motherboard just to overclock one of those processors. This video on overclocking the processor really only works money-wise if you've already got the motherboard and processor capable of overclocking. Otherwise the system is about 10 years old at this point and you're better off spending money on a new system.

You're not going to be able to do this kind of overclocking using a Dell system or HP or any other large manufacturer for that matter. Unless you happen to get a system that has a motherboard that has a bios with these settings this is no way to overclock it.
@@uzismrt That is not correct. You can still overclock it, but you will have to do it on Windows and you need an unlocked multi. I will bring a tutorial based on one of those Dell workstaions on my Channel
Cool Video ! I have an x5670,MSI x58 pro -e and a lc power lc-cc-120 cooler how high can i go with overclocking? (Sorry for my bad english,it's not my native language)
n0hand that really depends on the individual chip. Mine got up to 4 gigahertz. Other people here in the comments report getting considerably faster speeds with their chips.
n0hand There will always be problems. The whole point of overclocking is to get the processor running faster than it's supposed to. You have to find the right balance between power, heat and speed.
i overclocked my x5670 same settings as you. prime95 is runing for 5h. max temp is 87c min temp is 74c. is it good? mobo: asus p6td deluxe cooler: cm seidon v3. ram: corsair dominator 3x2gb thank you for video.
Kopi83r I believe you can use the 23 x multiplier with the x5670. That being said it doesn't help because you can use the base clock increase to further overclock the processor if processor is capable of being overclocked beyond that point. The main advantage to using a Xeon over a core i7 processor is the extra cores. With the x5650 and above Xeon processors you get two more processor cores for a total of 6.
Michael Cooper ok. Hopefully I’ll add a water cooling solution from cooler master (nepton 240m) and the temperatures will not raise as much as they were in your configuration. Thanks for the video. 👌
The settings with be a little different on the gigabyte motherboard but yes. This link is to the original set of videos and shows the settings in a Gigabyte motherboard. It still won't match to what you have but should explain the process to the point where you can make it work. th-cam.com/video/KBbHMcA8S8s/w-d-xo.html
Tip: get an x5675 instead, you can set the multiplier to 23 or 25 on that one. And on auto it even goes up to x26 in single core bursts. I can get 4.6 GHz that way. But all core OC works best on x23 for me with 195 base clock @ 1.4 volts
No. That is a socket 2011 CPU. Do some Google searches with that model number and the word motherboard and see if he can find someone talking about getting it to work in a particular motherboard.
thanks Michael for doing this video. I have a X58 Mobo that I just cleaned up took out the i7-920 dropped in the X5670 and then the headaches started when trying to get anything stable Lol. So I will definitely be trying this :)
Running multiple stress testing apps actually decreases load because of scheduling. Better to run just prime95 on small FFTs (maximum heat setting). Wouldn't recommend disabling speedstep or C-states either. It will just be hotter and use more power in idle and won't improve max performance
Hello all. i dont really know where else to post this, i have the asus p6t x58 board (not deluxe) and i have the x5650 running at 4ghz with a multiplyer of 22 and BCLK of 182. it runs stable without blue screen crashes, and temps never exceed 75C under synthetic load. the issue i am having is that maybe 1/5 times the pc will shut down when put to sleep and require being unplugged and letting it sit for a moment and rebooting. not sure what this issue is. i am running and SSD for the boot drive. any ideas??

Oddly enough Im helping a friend go from a i7 920 to a X5680 on that same moba 😂😂.

I ran mismatched capacity and speed RAM sticks for years on my version 1 of the p6t without a problem.
@@MichaelTheComputerGuy That's good to know. I bought combo 2 months ago for $100, but videos like yours inspired me to upgrade prior to building.

It's best to run the ram at 1600 and your base clock 200. Then a 21 multi will be a safe and optimal 4200mhz. The CPU rarely needs more than 1.3v for that speed so you can try and drop the vcore to also bring temps down

Great video really helped me with my 920 to x5675 running amazing at 4.01ghz in the 80s top man
If it's running in the 80'sC that is a little high. Is that when you are running your programs or while you're testing with prime95 or something similar?

I'm afraid not. HP, Dell, Acer and most other computer makers don't provide the necessary settings in the BIOS to overclock.

Can you post the power consumption at the wall the you stress the CPU? This generation of processors were great overclockers but consumed a lot power. Brian said his system at 4GHz was consuming 700W (with a 970) which is too much for the PSU I have.
flycast I don't have a meter that would let me do that.
my X5670 o/c to 4.4ghz and my GTX 970 overclocked to 1500 / 3602 uses 370w on full load cpu and gpu
X58 has a performance increase up to 2000 DRAM frequency going higher is pointless unless you need a little extra to achieve max BCLK-CPU core target but keep an eye on performance going over 2000 on DRAM frequency I'm no expert so please feel free to add or correct my comment Happy overclocking
what about the temperature processor when you make render ? ?
Hey Micheal, are you really sure, that enabling CPU Spread Spectrum is really helpfull if it comes to BCLK Overclocking? Normally most of the guys running around @ the Internet are suggesting not to use it, because it leads to more BCLK fluctuations and may therefore raise the chance of an instability occuring.
maCS I'm not sure about that. It may be that having it off is better for stability. I suppose you could run a test and see if you can the base clock higher with or without the Spread Spectrum enabled.
In the right corner stands that it enhances the overclocking ability when it is disabled... So it is exactly the wrong way

The only thing I cant figure out is why when using cinebench R23 during loads of 99%+ the Core Speed fluctuates from 4000MHz to 2700MHz and the multiplier from 22 down to 17. and the final result in Cinebench is 3453 whereas my inter i7 920 unblocked was 2077. Any help would be appreciated
Maybe the cpu is overheating which would cause it to lower the ghz. Hwinfo64 which is free can show you the temp.

That's what turbo boost does. Just make sure it's turned on in the Bios.
Did you ever use AIO ? What happenned to the thermal overload shutdown on the 2 chips that failed?
Gerwyn Jones I don't know what you mean by the 2 chips that failed. No CPUs have failed in this computer.
you said that you know of 2 cpus that failed from leaking AIO.

But can you do it in a server case?
As long as the server case can take the motherboard and cooling along with all the other components that matter, yes.
I have a GTX 960 in it.
myriadcorp For the cost it might be worth it. replacing the thermal compound if it's been awhile might help as well.
Patrick Sjöholm how did that work out? Thank you.

Michael any motherboard brand with x58 chipset can overclock a Xeon x56xx??
Btw thanks for your video...help a lot!!!
Not all of them. You need to look at the BIOS and see if it has the setting shown in this video. If the settings are there you could overclock it. If you're looking for a motherboard to do the overclocking go to the manufacturer's website and download the service manual. It should show all the BIOS settings available.
Hi Michael, I'm kinda confused of your last Cinebench test with the score of 848 with 4.01Ghz , I'm running a Xeon X5650 (older model than yours) stable with a max. of 65°C on a freq of 3.9 GHz and I've got 914 points in cinebench lol
Most likely has to do with the background tasks running on my computer. Any task that takes CPU time would take away those resources from Cinebench.

I wouldn't recommend buying a new motherboard just to overclock one of those processors. This video on overclocking the processor really only works money-wise if you've already got the motherboard and processor capable of overclocking. Otherwise the system is about 10 years old at this point and you're better off spending money on a new system.

n0hand that really depends on the individual chip. Mine got up to 4 gigahertz. Other people here in the comments report getting considerably faster speeds with their chips.
Michael Cooper so i can overclock it up to 4ghz without any problems? Thx for the answer
n0hand There will always be problems. The whole point of overclocking is to get the processor running faster than it's supposed to. You have to find the right balance between power, heat and speed.
Michael Cooper ok, thanks for your help :).

Those temps are fine. Prime95 puts a maximum load on your CPU. Doing real world things is not likely to use the CPU at that level.

Is 22 the max multiplayer of this CPU or is it 23 (turbo). In my i7 920 i can set 21 though official multiplayer is 20. Best regards.
Kopi83r The max multiplier depends on the CPU. On the 920 its 20.
It is 20 but there is also turbo. So Im using 21x 193 Bclk. I was wondering can you use the turbo multiplayer on a xeon.

I always use air cooling. In my opinion water cooling has no real world advantages and it has lots of real-world disadvantages.
Michael Cooper ok. Hopefully I’ll add a water cooling solution from cooler master (nepton 240m) and the temperatures will not raise as much as they were in your configuration. Thanks for the video. 👌

Tip: get an x5675 instead, you can set the multiplier to 23 or 25 on that one. And on auto it even goes up to x26 in single core bursts. I can get 4.6 GHz that way. But all core OC works best on x23 for me with 195 base clock @ 1.4 volts

Will this method work for a Intel Xeon E5-2680 v2 processor?
Absolutely. There are also a couple more imperfections in the video, that's why I did my updated version of an OC tutorial for x58 ;)
