      Rules been adjusted a million times by now, and as far as eye tests go through decades worth of inconsistency - I thought it was no goal. BUT I just don't understand the point of disallowing kicks at all. It's infinitely more difficult to beat a goalie that way so I don't see how it becomes more frequent in attempt or dangerous for goalies. Just count them all.

    • @filtersc
      @filtersc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that play by Gaudreau was brutal, even in real time before McDavid scored it was noticeable. When your Selke candidate center gets bumped from the top line because he's not handling McDavid at all, your Vezina nominated goal has an .852 save %, Tkachuk's a ghost and Hanifin was totally worthless with his panic turnovers you're screwed.
      Backlund was far and away our best forward that whole series and Tanev was a game changer defensively when he came back, even with one arm. Feels like a shame to waste those guys efforts, and it makes the offseason another rough one because it's tough to take positives from a 33 year old 2nd/3rd line center and a 32 year old stay at home defenseman with some rugged miles on the clock.
      Calgary didn't deserve to win, but refs were horrific in this one too. They screwed up 3 perfectly good goals in the series, called a million penalties in the first half of the series then let everything go in the last couple. The hockey was awful to watch, and it felt like watching 5 regular season games between two teams that have no history of any kind of rivalry. Nobody really did any hitting , refs shut the door straight away on any kind of scrums by making it 4 on 4 so much early on and that favoring Edmonton so heavily Calgary couldn't get involved in anything really.
      You could go back a couple of years to the regular season to see some really great battle of Alberta's in the regular season, we got none of that. Instead we got 5 games of tuesday night middle of the regular season games. Probably with both teams playing their third goalies and one teams top line sitting in the press box watching the game, that's about how good the series was in pure hockey, or playoff hockey terms.

    Haha it's funny how you joked about the doom texts with your producer cause I was doing that with my friends for the first part of the season. Everybody pre-season was talking the Avs up but I was convinced we were gunna have a tough year. I saw how our off season went and knew we had guys missing the start of the season. I knew Kuemper was used to getting absolutely shelled in Arizona and would have to adjust. I really thought we wouldn't be 1 seed in the division. And then that middle of the season tear happened and I was so elated! The fact that Gabe played 51 games, Kuemper got hurt, Nate played 65 games and they still some how clawed back to the top is insane to me.

  • @obelisk21
    @obelisk21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What you are fundamentally missing is the path of the puck relative to the skate. In Coleman's case, the puck is moving away from him and he comes in behind it and propels it forward, in these other instances the puck is travelling towards the skate and they move their feet causing a deflection.

    Leo talking now...Wow!! Can’t believe he’s now almost 2 yrs old. Time does fly. 😊
    Good man Steve!! We’re going to take Real Madrid & pound them into the pitch!! 😁 GO LFC GO!!!
    I’m still mad about last night & that goal being called back. I can’t believe it happened again. We get robbed by the Officials yet again. Yes, the Flames had a rough series, but it only takes one goal & one game for momentum to shift & you could feel that w/that goal last night. & then...
    You can’t tell me the NHL doesn’t want McDavid in the Stanley Cup Final & here they had the chance to ensure at least a 3rd Round Appearance. Goody for them. I wouldn’t have a problem if the Oilers had won w/out the goal called back. This however? I’ll be cheering for the Avs next round. I just can’t do it this time for the Oilers.
    & yes, I am bitter, because this hurts the Game of Hockey. Who wants to watch something like that happen? How do you explain that to a new Fan trying to learn about the Game? You can’t!!
    But hey...They got what they wanted. McDavid in the 3rd Round....yippee.

    For what its worth with regards to Matthew Tkahcuk being invisible vs the Oilers, its come out that he had a hand injury that a lot of people suspect goes back to the fights he had with John Klingberg in round 1 against Dallas. A broken hand would go a long way in explaining the massive decline in his shooting and passing from Round 1 Game 2 onwards.

    If a review takes more than 5 minutes it is no longer "distinct" there for there is not enough evidence to over turn it. If your taking extended periods of time than your straight up looking to overturn the call over something so small. All us neutral fans should be allowed to go up to Gary Bettman and that crew that reviews calls in toronto to demonstrate what a "distinct kicking motion" is straight into their balls

  • @mattweston75

    The rule itself is dumb, either allow all deflection or no deflection. "Intent and distinct" are not measurable, and it will differ from person to person.

  • @mikestoast
    @mikestoast 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It was 100% a good goal.
    a) the puck was going in anyways
    b) the player, in an attempt to stop/slow down moved their leg out in front of them, as happens in a natural reaction. The leg had stopped its rotational movement before contacting the puck.
    c) the puck made contact with the skate of the player who was trying to prevent forward movement, which then happened to come into contact with the puck as they were moving at different velocities. Both the puck and the skate were traveling in the same direction of motion.
    c) The oilers player helped drive the calgary player forward into the puck
    d) there was no kicking motion, the puck deflected off the players skate in the same directional plane.
    We have whole fields of study around the body and body movement. "distinct kicking motion" can be something very easily quantified, as there are literal experts who study and have doctorates in this information. "kicking motion" is very different from a "deflection"

    Kick in goals are not allowed because that's not the sport. Hockey sticks are what you use to score hockey goals. The "distinct kicking motion" rule came in because goal scoring was way down in the 90s and they were trying to allow more goals to count. Don't change the rules in game 5 of round 2 or anything, but intentional foot goals suck.

    I think it should be a goal but with the president the league set for kick ins and some plays that have been called kicks it is a kick in

    I almost wish sports betting became illegal again
    Not because I think it's bad or anything
    I'm just so sick of every platform focusing more on the gambling than the sport itself. I tried to look up Hyman's contract on a sports app the other day but it wasn't listed, however if I wanted to know the betting odds of him scoring the first goal in the conference final, finding that was easy... Like wtf are we doing.

    Not only did Coleman completely change the direction of the puck with a thrust of his leg, but also the SPEED of the puck. The puck was slowly wobbling towards the inside of the post, as was his left leg going for the post... He thrust his leg at the puck, and accelerated it in a totally different direction. That's a kick. He should have left it alone and it would have went in anyways.

    • @Raze_48
      @Raze_48 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also... Bieksa made the best point, Coleman did a very good job at trying to hide the fact he kicked it, but the officials weren't fooled and they made the right call.

    He definitely directed and pushed it in but it wasn't a standard kicking motion. He clearly used his momentum to scoop it in...Is that legal? I guess not on that day.

    I frankly don’t understand the hoopla about the disallowed goal. It was an obvious botched call. As far as I can tell no one is claiming it cost the Flames the series, Edmonton was clearly the better team throughout, and there was clear and obvious precedent set by the officials (both this season and in seasons prior) that contradicted their decision in this game. I’m new to hockey so seeing the contradiction to precedent like that was surprising but what’s even more shocking is how many ppl defended the call.
    In any other sport that’s clearly a missed call ppl wouldn’t defend. Again, it wasn’t the reason the Flames lost the series so it makes defending the decision make even less sense to me.

    All kick-in goals should just be allowed. It's hard enough to do on purpose anyway. And the refs would have one less thing to worry about. Less controversies.

    • @jonathansaraco
      @jonathansaraco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This would be nice, but I don't think any goalie would want the rulebook to allow skaters to swing their knives toward them all game.

    • @brandonchalloner9218
      @brandonchalloner9218 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My whole life I would've laughed this off as something ridiculous but it's completely the answer. It being allowed would change absolutely nothing about the game except for removing these controversies alone. It's completely less effective and wouldn't increase in frequency which wouldn't be any more dangerous for goalies than it already is. If you can beat a goalie with your foot, all the power to you. It was completely a kick, so no goal... but I don't understand the point in having the rule at all. It doesn't turn it into soccer to make this change. Simplifies everything imo.

    • @WiilleTsukka
      @WiilleTsukka 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonathansaraco I understand and respect your point, but I just don't think it would be as dangerous as you think since players' skates tend to stay downward on the ice. So unless they're trying to kick in a puck that's midair, there shouldn't be any great safety concerns.

    Colorado has 7 guys with 20 goals so I don't really see how they don't have balanced scoring too..... Also only 3 people, that played at least 40 games for the team, with a minus...
    Also side note, I would have loved to see how Gabe and Nate would have done if they played 75+ games this year. Gabe had 30 goals in 51 games which is just an incredible pace compared to the rest of his career (and for anyone really). And we all know the story with Mackinnon too.

    It was a distinct kicking motion passed on the path his skate would had to take if the puck wasn't there. If the puck isn't there Coleman doesn't hit the post with his skate. Coleman also extends his knee.

  • @DiamondPlated395
    @DiamondPlated395 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Coleman kicked that puck in the net if you don’t see that you don’t understand skating or the momentum there or like probably anything. Great call by the refs, I’m a leafs fan and was routing for Calgary, it was just a good fning call. He did it in a deceiving way, he was trying to make it this hard to figure out, but it’s a clearly unnatural movement and he was kicking that puck.

    The puck can be kicked all over the ice, just not into the net. So saying that you can't kick the puck into the net is for safety is only for the goalies safety only perhaps? Guys kick the puck all the time otherwise.

  • @mylesstuart1633
    @mylesstuart1633 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thompson didn’t kick the puck in, he kicked his leg out & the puck hit it & “deflected” into the net. GOOD GOAL
    Coleman made sure his foot made contact with the puck & shoved it into the net. You can tell it was on purpose by the way he was falling, his foot should’ve been nowhere near the puck. Not a typical distinct kick but a distinct kick nonetheless. NO GOAL
    It’s not that hard people 😂
