NHL cancelling themed warm-up jerseys is a direct result of media focusing on the 6 or so players, rather than ignoring them and focusing on the cause and everyone participating. I remember SDP spending tens of minutes talking about those few players. I don't remember SDP spending at least 99x as much time talking about the success of themed nights (pride etc.). SDP is one of the culprits in this mess.

I think it might be short sighted of Adam to assume it was just about 6 guys who had a problem with the pride jerseys. Obviously it’s bigger than that for the league to stop wearing all cause based jerseys. I think there are probably quite a few players who didn’t want to wear it but didn’t want the negative social media attention. Just remember how toxic the hockey culture can be it wasn’t long ago at all players were calling each other f*****t on the ice. That mentality doesn’t just disappear overnight, even if a lot of us hope that it did.

With Calgary, the simple reason why all these players want out is that they do not think they’ll be able to win a cup there.
This is one of the few times in their career where they can dictate what team they wish to play for and they may see themselves as the missing piece for another franchise.
They just watched Tkachuk help drag the Panthers to the finals after he made the same pitch.

  • @MonkeyworkPlays

Do we honestly think the jerseys are going away because half a dozen players didn't want to wear them, or is it more likely they are going away because the media took a story about six players not wanting to wear them and turned it into this massive news cycle thing trying to shame them and paint the NHL overall because of it? I love Steve, Adam, and Jess but you guys were just as guilty of this focusing on a few individuals and devoting massive airtime to saying how disappointing or terrible it was instead of putting even a quarter of that time into covering the POSITIVE side of those events and showcasing the good those nights and jerseys do.
Should the NHL have just taken their ball (puck) and gone home - no but lets be honest about why it's happening - they don't want the bad press and every time a single player doesn't want to "comply" with a social issue. You can't mandate this on the players and you can't keep the press from turning an anthill into a mountain so they decided to just avoid the issue altogether. The media is the reason this has happened, the drive for clicks and outrage is what caused this to happen, not the choices of 6 players.
(to be clear i'll happily wear a pride jersey incase anyone is thinking I"m against the cause for any reason)

I'd have to disagree with the guys that it was just 6 guys that caused this change by the NHL. Realistically, I think it was the response to the 6 guys refusing to wear the jersey that is the true rationale for cutting the pregame jerseys. The story about those 6 guys and the social media responses were overwhelming and the events themselves completely overshadowed.
The NHL is a business; they want to make money and avoid any PR nightmares which the coverage became. Same thing with the sponsors they just want the brands in your face for neutral or good reasons.
Last years response to the different players not wearing the jerseys entirely eliminated any of the good media about the events. It was the equivalent of throwing a party and everyone being pissed off that one guy wasn't enjoying himself at the party. Instead of focusing on how fun it was they focused on why that person wasn't enjoying himself. Then they went to the host and said "that guys not having fun, make him have fun or Im not going to enjoy it" and then talked exclusively for weeks after about how the party wasn't fun because that one guy ruined it.
So its really not surprising that the NHL said well if were going to get nothing but backlash for weeks during the season if any singular player doesn't wear this jersey. Why just not host the party, take the lumps in the offseason and then not have it be an ongoing issue. The NHL should absolutely be a positive space for people of different ethnicites, beliefs, genders etc. but people trying to force feed their beliefs on these individuals to get a morale victory rather then enjoying and experiencing the 99% of people there supporting the event. Is in my opinion the rationale for this decision.

  • @maint_req

Six players didn't do away with the Pride jerseys. YOU media types did. You have no one to blame but yourselves for this. When Provorov QUIETLY decided to skip the warmup for his own, personal religious beliefs, it was YOU who immediately began sharpening your pitchforks, clutching your pearls, and screeching to high heaven about how Provorov had just declared war on the LGBT movement and single-handedly dragged us all back into the 50s.
Because of your stink, the NHL had to point out - correctly - that the players are not bound to support every single initiative that their teams do. It is simply not part of their contract, or the NHL would have said so. But that didn't appease you. YOU wanted blood. The fact that 99.9% of the players wore the jersey wasn't enough for you.
Faced with this potential headache next season, it seems Bettman has gone full scorched-earth, reasoning (correctly, in my opinion) that while the media may lose its mind for a month or two about this, it will have all died down by the start of the next season and NHL viewership will not suffer for it.
These are hockey players with their own personal beliefs, politics, etc. They are not mindless billboards for the social justice flavour of the month.

As a Latino hockey fan, who has had my fair share of racial issues. I’m glad they don’t do the jerseys for ANYONE any more. I don’t feel more included if there’s a “Latin night.” It’s honestly kind of awkward. All I want is to go to a game and cheer for my team next to some other fans and be left alone. I don’t need people to wave my flag or sing a Spanish song or anything. And I don’t understand why general society thinks smashing things in everyone’s face over and over and over again will make the ones who actually are jerks just go “you’re right I’m wrong.” And all this stuff about “raise awareness”…… I mean come on…..everyone is aware. If you like the game of hockey, come to a game. Sit next to me, cheer for our team. Scream at the refs. Chant it’s the goalies fault. If you like the game don’t let a few dark spots ruin the whole thing. Go see a game and don’t give a crap who thinks what.

Adam I think it wasnt just the 6 guys that forced the change but the MEEEEEDIA aswell. All anyone in the hockey world was talking about was the 6 guys. The media let the 6 guys be the face of pride month. Media is outrage driven and if such a small fraction is against pride night that means you have a large faction that can be outraged and get the most fan interactions on their posts, arguements in the comments which drive up their engagement and leads to overshadowing the actual event itself. Sure the 6 guys being against it might have been the starting point but it also could have ended there if everyone ignored them.

But to deny the part that the media and the fans had in making this a massive storyline that went on for the majority of the season is just mindblowingly dumb. For months everytime a pride night was being held the question was "who isn't going to wear it now?" or "Is this team even going to wear the jersey?" instead of focusing on the night and all the good that it could have done. The blame for this decision doesn't rest solely on the 6 guys who didn't wear it and this decision by the BoG was the most obvious one that would happen because the storyline going into this season would be who isn't going to wear the jersey.

The NHL should have just allowed players to opt out. Why touch the military and cancer jerseys because players don’t want to represent pride, that’s their choice if all of their team mates wear one practice jersey and 1 guy wears a regular one.

    • @LordGrantius

They did allow players to opt out - they didn't skate that warmup. A handful of players decided to take it a step farther and they should have been reprimanded, at least.
I have family and friends that are very anti-military. When I contemplated joining, I had family virtually threatening to disown me. Would your reaction be the same if players wanted to opt out of a military night? Antipathy to the military-industrial complex is rather widespread.
I don't even know all the different special nights teams do, but if there's a police night, do you support player opt outs?

The flames situation sucks but is obvious: The players saw the writing on the wall when Gaudreau and Katchuk left. You can't lose that caliber of player and still consider yourself a contender. I'm betting all those players we are now hearing won't resign made their decision before things went bad last season with Sutter, that just confirmed it. Players won't stick in a market they don't love unless they feel a significant chance to win. Calgary's window is closed. It's the same thing that's happening to the Jets, same thing that happened to Columbus.
The 'mid' markets NEED to be good, and they need to sustain it, or their free agency will always be tough.. and even their trades are gonna be rough... hard to pay for guys that potentially won't resign in a year or two.
I don't know if The Flames were a mainstay on no trade lists, but I promise you they are now.

A jersey should not be the determining factor to say people are welcome to the arena. Everyone made a big deal out of the 6 people not wearing it. Wearing the jersey should not say I accept you or we do, just go to the game weather you are gay, straight, or whatever else you are. If you need a jersey to tell you are welcome than you might be the problem.

You're missing the 'comply or get canceled' extortion that goes along with the jersey thing. How many players complied for the sole reason that the league/teams told them to toe the company line. If you think there were only 6 players who objected, you're just being foolish. This wasn't done to appease 6 players, it was done to avoid the disgrace of having players pick & choose what causes they supported, and avoid the disaster of potentially having half the team 'opt-out'.

For the love of god guys... Take a step back and you'll see that it wasn't 6 guys that caused this... The over the top criticism from the MEDIA (including you Adam) is to blame here... When provonov gave a legitimate reason not to wear it, this show called him an ENEMEY that he was a BIGOT for not wearing a jersey... I would imagine that those 6 players probably got threatened with violence because of it... If those six players didn't wear the jersey and the media said nothing we still have these events... But each time it wasn't worn it was a circus and the league isn't going to want that pr nightmare... Also complying with a mandated jersey is not the same as agreeing with what it says... Those six stood there ground one team for went the whole jersey probably to protect the individual, We as a community can not ask for inclusiveness and then scream and cry when some one doesn't want to play we sound like toddlers on the play ground not getting our way... If we want to be inclusive then we have to respect there choice and hope one day they will come around but by forcing them, making them under threat of disciplinary action (as suggested earlier this year Steve) you only feed in to their distain. Like I love you guys I watch you weekly but when ever I hear you talk about this specific issue it's either you're in favor or you are an enemy and bigot, and nothing works that way... Nothing is white or black and id really appreciate coming from a bi individual to tone down the hate and distain you show to these players every time this particular issue arises, like Riemer went from Steve's favorite goalie to now he seems to have a dislike for him because he didn't wear a jersey? .... Like this whole thing is dumb when you stand back and think about it but it seems fanning the flames of hatred is what we humans like to do...

on the pride issue and eliminating the special issue warm-up jerseys, it was never about whether people from that community were or were not welcome in the arena - those of us who are not part of that community have never once said that you weren't welcome, hockey has always been for everyone regardless of whether it was said out loud or not. Hockey is hockey regardless of where you're from...you don't need a special jersey to make that statement. Straight, gay, cancer survivor/fighter, military service member/veteran, etc. it has never mattered, you were always welcome! Creating victimhood for attention is the issue, because I could say that myself as a Christian I'm a target of hate and harrassment, but at the end of the day if I bring attention to it then it's a plea for attention instead of finding ways to be proud of who you are and the values you hold, it's allowing yourself to not be so triggered by something so irrelevant in the grand scheme of things! I know what I believe in and where my morals stand, whether other people accept that is not my problem because it's not going to change who I am or what I believe in.
