What Happened to Flip Monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh?

- In the ecosystem of Yu-Gi-Oh, certain cards have their time in the sun. Among Monsters, Traps, and Spells, monsters have enjoyed constant success in the competitive TCG, OCG, and Master Duel landscape. But some monsters did not transition to the modern card game so seamlessly. Today, we look at flip monsters, monsters in the past and playground and how they fare in 2023.

Krawlers would've been a good flip archetype that punishes the opponent for beating over your monsters outside of battle.... except that their floating effects dont work except when face up... you know, the flip deck, famous for having face up monsters..
yeah krawlers were just one measly step away from greatness
doesn't stop me from playing them when I'm in the mood though even if I lose most of the time with them
Deus-X can activate its effect when face-down. Krawler also gets support by other archetypes like World Legacy, Prediction Princess and Subterror.
@@pi_xiright prediction ritual work very well with Deus bc she can summond them easily
@@namle-jk3id I know. But I prefer Krawler Spright G-Golem.
@@pi_xi oh I see men G-golem is a cyberse deck but really underrate

Me having flashbacks of Nekroz format.
I wish we had more cards like the Ninja cards and Krawlers. I love the ability to use face-downs as material like "Ninjustu Art Dancing Leaves" or just flipping themselves up like traps á la "Deus X-Krawler".
you forgot to mention NINJA. the best and most fun flip deck that dont rely on floodgates
They are not a real flip deck. The main-body of the monsters used, ALL of them do not have "FLIP" in their card type Text. They have effects related to flippy boi's, but they are not Flip monsters
I think the easiest fix would be a Rule Change that made Flip Monsters able to Flip when Targeted by card effects as well
I wrote a Field Spell like that
Unfathomable Dark Depths
They should just act like trap cards having spell speed 2
An easy fix would be generic FLIP support but we all know of the danger of Morphing Jar being used for milling/drawing 5 new cards. It's the Snake Rain problem where it could be OP therefore there can be no good Reptiles use it with.
Idk you try to joking or not like have you seen prediction princess basic combo, I cases you don't it do a fucking VFD on daily basis.
One day there will be reptile support 😭😭🙏🏽
They could always just ban Morphing Jar and get it over with. It's not even the first time it ended up on the banlist.
@@felixdaniels37this tbh, morphing jar is already a really dumb card like a lot of the other jar monsters like cyber jar, cyber jar even got banned in the TCG and master duel, not even because it was all that good but because it is a dumb sacky high variance card.
I am hoping that someday there is a Reptile and Fire Archetype about Alligators and other Reptiles that live in a Volcano which all have 200 def, great GY effects AND gret special summoned from GY effects so that it breaks both Snake Rain and Rekindling in one go.
I think the easiest way of thinking about it is simple math. Flip monsters always need *at least* one other card to help trigger their effects faster or on demand. A dude like Kashtira Fenrir doesn't need any additional cards to do its thing.
I'm surprised Konami has yet to make either a tribute set based archetype or an archetype of flip monsters which can flip themselves up like Amaterasu.
Big Krawler, Deus X can do that too.
Prediction princess there if you want that, like the entire archetype just doing flip-support shenanigans
Monarchs are a tribute based archtype though they have some busted spells/traps that lock out the extra deck etc
@@vo1ce147It's more like flip monsters which have a built in ability to flip themselves up. I.e more cards like Deus-Ex Krawler. I do play Prediction Princess though.
@@vagrant2863 you know the deus is much much reactive than proactive right ?, if they want to make more of flip-support I rather take something like krawler or shadolll
Prediction Princess and Subterror can only carry a mechanic so hard. Prediction Princess is one of my favourite decks though :)
Personally subterrors has always been my go to
An issue I find is that the many different flip archetypes have cards that would work fantastically as support, but are split across archetypes.
Notable is World Legacy Pawns. A card that allows you to flip up or flip down any monster you control OPT… but only when you control a Krawler.
What sucks is that generic flip support is great, but flip decks can’t really run generic support due to how slow they are unless searching and summoning is involved. If cards like Terror in the Hidden City (technically a Subterror card, but it’s not searchable) and Junk Sleep had cards in-archetype for flip decks, things would be a lot easier for them.
People can argue against this for “homogenizing” the playstyle, but Synchro decks usually have the same endboard no matter what you play, so it’s no excuse. Plus, each flip deck has different end goals, so things’ll remain varied.
Of course, if Master Rule 6 allows flip monsters to be treated as Trap Cards during the opponent’s turn, that’d help a great deal.
You dont need to control a Krawler for World Legacy Pawns! It's Pawns' second effect that needs a krawler to activate, and you have to shuffle it into the deck from the graveyard, so it doesn't have to be on the field.
Look into Prediction Princess. You won't be disappointed.
Also if you love penguins then there's also Penguin flip control. XD
Both those decks are buns
I just want to recreate the childhood thrill of using my boi Man-Eater Bug. But that time has long since passed. 😢 Glad he got a retrain at least!
Krawler Spine is technically a Man-Eater Bug retrain.
@@pi_xiwell man eater bug got his new buff form
My favorite part of flip monsters is how the Jars linger on the banlist
Like some ancient curse sealed away for some foolish person to unearth
Go on Konami, release the Fiber. Let the darkest depths of the creative spirit show their ability
I would love to see a big Yugituber make an hypothetical format or series like Junior Journey where Flip Monsters worked the way trap cards do, and you could flip them up whenever you wanted after the turn they are set. They would still not be powerful enough to be relevant in the modern day IMO, but I feel like if Konami officially made that change, they could design cool ideas and archetypes involving that.
After thinking about what they could do to help flips, i realized its a red hearing. The question is posed like you would help flip mons but kobami only releases arechtyped now. Generic flip support would just be guru support.
Imo it's kinda like a 5ds boomer asking "what happen to tuners? Now adays there ether a dumb high level or a synchron."
Entertaining vide nun the less
I still remember the fear of wondering is my opp face down a cyber jar? Good times.
Do heroin review
I am hoping Worms get a rework or atleast a broken card like Genex got.
I am begging for this
They belong to World terminal lore, so there's hope
You know with the mountain of mechanics and card types that became of lower value due to game progressing more away from Trades in the Battle Phase, the more I appreciate the existence of Evenly Matched serving as a way to force players to still respect it.
Add the ability to quick effect flip a FLIP monster to the player once per turn, on the opponent's turn only.
Just make them work the same way traps do, they could sure make some neat cards and archetypes around that.
So effectively make them not flips?
imo the best "Flip" Monster we got lately was Jioh. yea, it's a strech, I'm trying...
Morphine Jar turbo where your opponent asks you, “wait, it’s not hard once per turn?” 😂
The one changes that funny to the card is make it so they act like a trap and that's still decent.
If every new flip monster got effect just as potent as normal summon people gonna start using them.
Say they got evenly match effect when flipped by opponent attack and krawler effect when removed by card effect only then people gonna respect and think twice before interacting with unkown set card
So i have been a FLIP player for years. Played WORMS when they first came out, switched to Subterror, Tindangle, and the Krawlers. Ive told my friend this before....DEUS EX Krawler is the greatest Flip monster ever created in the history of Flip. He is the only card in the entire game that can Activate its effects in facedown position and also has a Built in "Applied Effect" so he cannot miss timing when he flips faceup after beting targeted. If other flip monsters had this mechanic, they would no shit be Meta
Konami changing the ruling of "Flip" to work as traps... Rip Ghostrick and let the rise of the swarm begin
Respect for going into Worms thou... Did my best but they lack a coherent gameplan
May our lord Jhrelth bless your day good soul
I will never not try to make funny morphing jar deck to kill them in one hit.
In a nutshel
-good
-slow
-shadoll
-subterror
Worlf Legacy Pawns, Sol and Luna
That's the reason why flip monsters were never introduced to Rush Duel
I've played a lot of Edison, and flip was still good there. You HAVE to respect Ryko, as well as Snowman Eater and the Hamster who sets up ryko from deck. The last time a flip monster was viable was with Geargiarmor in 2014 who is basically a once per turn with delay; no, Shadolls are not a flip archetype, is a mill archetype who has flip as backup.
I would say flip kinda started to die with synchros, because flip monsters are not useful as extra deck material, and their best support being Hamster, a level 4 who brings up level 3 or lower AKA not an XYZ card. Another problem is the "Battle phase no longer matters", which flip monsters relied on.
What happened to so many other care types/effects in Yu-Gi-Oh: power creep
Let's just make it so flip monsters work like trap cards , how bad can it beee
Well...
- Protector of the Throne = Creature swap but better (Doesn't even target)
- Morphing Jar = Beloved in decks like Kash or Eldlich who doesn't even commit to normal summon
- Morphing Jar #2 = Which floating effects?
- Krawler Dendrite = Foolish burial
- Tindangle Dholes (Lvl 5 thou) = Foolish burial goods)
- Sonic jammer = OMG I LOVE RAYE SO MUCH
- Guard Dog = Droplet / Imperm / Gamma on draw? No? Skill issue
There's more of course, classics like Penguins or Shaddoll, but know that without taking measures, flip effects can be busted
Potential Flip Archetypes:
Whack-A-Mole
Revolving Door Gag (Hell-O Hotel)
lesgoooo the imperm worlds footage is BACK BABY.
konami really printed man eater bug gain but gave it more effs?? hype
Wait, there were new Prediction Princess? Aw hell nah I can't wait
It already has in year ago
Popping cards and returning them to hand and deck happened.
Unlimit the Morphing Jar!
The same thing that happened to Traps lmfao
Labrynth and Traptrix joined the game ...
Maybe a new archetype about summon face down, reveal and especial summon from the extra deck and get an extra normal summon to set another card for another especial summon and flip effect. Yes, i know that would basically mean making a better version of Zoodiacs but that's the only way i think Flip monsters could make a comeback.
Am i crazy for thinking flip monsters should be able to be flipped (like a trap card) to face up def and then their effs could activate upon their wants rather than giving the opponent the choice.
You forgot about Shaddolls, which are great dlip monster, and held competitive success due to literally everything they had EXCEPT THE FLIP MECHANIC
Tbf, that's the joke, same for Ghostrick which aren't even flips to begin with
I thought 2400 was perfect on SAT but lovely video
It's all fun and games until a Meta Deck just decided to play Baou's wicked breaking flamberge.
Guys I have an amazing way to make FLIP monster meta again!!!!
.
Ok, first of all, Konami should unite those wanderers called "flipped face-up" under the flip banner, Subterror Link (Wait, they have a link?) not interacting with classics like Snowman or Ghostrick is discouraging...
Second, where's my waifu Tindangle Angel? Being an anime deck during link era no less, yet managing to make such hype duels shouldn't be forgotten... Unlike Meiru (Prediction Princess) Akira Zaizen was more relevant to the story, so at least they deserve those sweet anime cards still on hold (Salute for any Armatos Legios / Hydradriver / Battledrone fan out there)
Third: Konami should be aware of odd balls like Guard Dog if they ever release Flip support... Prediction Princess was the prime example of it, yet they're a ritual (Bruh...) who must run lots of bricks and struggle against a single, well placed handtrap; and Subterror succession can virtually search any (Earth for now) monster with proper deckbuilding
Who knows, several of the Duel terminal monsters are flips (Shaddoll, Krawler, Worms), and even fan favorites like Penguins made a comeback (...) by giving coherent support
Still waiting on broken Krawler support
Just change the rules to where facedown monsters can't leave the field by card effects that will that will work right!.....right?
FLIP is just a few good support pieces to be degenerate.
Konami just needs to give us a good generic link one that says you can set flip monsters in spell trap and activate them as such
That would actually be cool
Prediction Princess
Subterror
Krawler
What will flip next???
Tindangle?
Wait, what's a "Flip Monster?"
They've been flipped.
What happened to flip monsters? Well... they went face down forever... into the garbage bin.
Most of the cards in the game are trash. Flip monsters you've mentioned are STILL far better than 80% of them. XD

Flip u off yugioh is mostly dead rip
Yugioh is far from dead at this point. It’s played more than ever before lol
