  • Do you own or are you getting a Vizsla? A common question I get while out walking my dog is what kind of breed is that? In this video I explain what breed my dog is and how you pronounce it. I also give a quick overview of the breed and hopefully made the video entertaining too!

Hi! I am hungarian. It is pronounced with a shorter "i". Pretty good for a non-native speaker though! :)

Haha spot on! It always goes... "what kind of breed is that?" "vizsla" .... "they're Hungarian" ... "hunter dogs" 😂 We've been using a slip lead which has helped a bit!

One thing that I've found works wonders with my vizsla is a gentle lead. It's a collar with an extra bit that you slip over the nose and attach the leash to the other side of that. Our dog still pulls quite a lot even with that (even 5 years in) - but it does make walking him manageable, even when he decides to try to kick up his walking speed.
Also, I always understood the pronunciation to be Vee-Shluh rather than Vee's Slaw (which is how I'd expect it to be pronounced based on the spelling). But, either way, they're definitely a very friendly and loving dog - even if Charlie DOES sometimes park himself right in front of my face when he's wanting attention...

Heel training will solve all the walking problems. My old pup was trained to walk at a heel pace and it was such a joy walking him once he was. He started off pulling so hard.

My vizsla my was a terrible puller when o got her.
    Pinch collar worked wonders.
No it’s not mean. Does the same thing momma does when they’re small pups. 😊

Figure 8 or slip lead. Part of it goes on their nose/mouth and stops them from pulling. Changed my life walking my stubborn vizsla boy Bowie :)

Great dog but super high energy. Mine definitely pulls less when I run him with a bike but walking in constantly having to correct him. A hardness or gentle leader helps quite a bit. My struggle is getting him to hear commands when he’s hyper focused - like when he sees a rabbit or other dog.

Actually, it's neither 's' nor 'sh'. The 'zs' letter combination stands for a sound what linguists call a voiced palato-alveolar sibilant (if you would look it up). Practically, it is the very same sound like at the begining of French je t'aime. But English has this sound too in words like vision, version, measure, etc. (source: I'm a native speaker)

Hey mate. Fenris K9 does some simple easy videos to help with loose lead walking. I'm on my third V and have had a GSP and a Dalmatian As well. The above vids are pretty much how I've done it also. Good luck. If I can help, let me know. 👍

Nice video. Some remarks: Your pronunciation for Vizsla is OK for a non-Hungarian, but proper pronunciation is different, check some Hungarian videos and listen (no shame in that, eg: I as a non-English person will never be able to properly say "sixth"). Second: Vizsla loves running and seeking/exploring, so it hates leash. If possible (and allowed by local law) let it go free and call it back with vocal commands. Both of you will be happier.

Yes I am sure in native tongue it sounds different but at least for me this is the best way I can pronounce it! I may do another video in the future with someone pronouncing it perfectly which would be cool. Thanks for the tips, she is getting good at the recall commands and now I can let her off Leash in the garden to run around and so far so good :)
