I extended the breaks to 30 minutes so I'd have time to make food and tea/coffee as well and I was just mindblown! This method worked so well for me. I was able to get over 7 hours of work done every day and aced the assignments and tests I had to complete during that time. And I didn't even feel the need to procrastinate because I had those 30 minute breaks. And I had a good few hours to spare at the end of each day for relaxing and watching anime. It's the most productive I've been in ages. I highly recommend this method to anyone who struggles with procrastination. Thank you for making this video!
Wow that's awesome. I'll give it a try and maybe make minor tweaks if I need to like you. Im excited to try this out, especially since procrastination is pretty hard for me unless I want to do the work. But now there's something to look forward to!

I started following this "animedoro" thing a year ago (but for me, studying sessions of at least 60+ minutes work better). At first, I just wanted to keep up with the new shows, but still prepare myself for university entry exams. Moreover, I needed a fixed routine to help me find time to work on other tasks I wanted. Another thing I've been doing for years is watching anime during meals and cardio workout... It feels good to accomplish an important task while doing something you enjoy in the process. By the end of the day, you get like 5 more anime episodes watched just by not wasting the time you would normally spend eating and keeping fit. Although quite obvious, I want to mention that break intervals work for much more than anime. There were times I've chosen to play games instead and on some other days I felt like reading was a better use of my time. With all that being said, my strategy was as followed: Study for *at least* an hour (always pushing myself to complete the task I started); An anime episode; Repeat until meal time~ Eat; Work on something I want for half an hour (cardio/piano/Mandarin/Spanish/programming/stock market/etc.); Repeat from start~ I also created a couple reminders for myself (some were being followed way before the strategy above): Weekends and weekdays are basically the same; Practicing something everyday for 15 minutes is far better than doing it once a week for 2 hours straight; There is barely no excuse for not separating *at least* an hour per day to study; Life is like a very complex game with an infinite amount of variables. *Everything* you do impact directly on your performance as a player, so act accordingly. Following those things I listed above I was able to keep up with (+/-)15 animes every season, complete a bunch of other shows, read over 100 books and, most importantly, succeed in the entrance exam for Aerospace Engineering. Currently, I'm in my first period and I gotta admit that it has been hard to follow my previous routine. Some days I can't watch a single episode (besides during meals), let alone do other things I like. However, I'm not trying to scare anyone (like most uni students like to do, for whatever reason), because having no spare time is completely my fault. Since I want to make the most out of all the opportunities I get during my college years, I am studying much more than I am expected to. If you don't aim that high (and that's totally fine, each person have their own priorities) and just do the minimum, you will have plenty of free time and still graduate without much worries. In case anyone tells you otherwise, this person is lying, simple as that. University is not as hard as people portrait it... But it definitely *can* be, depending on your goals. There are many more things I learned along the way that help with my productivity, but I feel like I've already written too much. I hope this commentary can be useful to you... How I wish someone had thaught me those things when I was younger. edit: Due to the repercussion of this commentary and following some requests, I wrote my overall thoughts about my first period at college on a blog. I might write more in the future if I feel like I have anything important to share. lifeisacomplexgame.blogspot.com/
Pomodoro may get more work done in the short-term, but you may get burnt out from the intensity and unsatisfying rewards, ultimately leading up to large periods of neglect. I think, with the anime pomodoro, what matters is that it gives a satisfying reward. Though it may get less done in the short-term, by preventing a burnout in the long-term, it paradoxically gets more work done.
Exactly! I’ve adopted this technique for my exams and it’s a pretty nice method. Ngl, I have gotten tired for a day or two but generally speaking I’ve been pretty productive.
I study exactly like this! I figured the pomodoro time was too short for me (as an engineering student, having to stop a problem in the middle or rush through it to finish in time was hell), so I stretched to around 60/15, and I thought "might as well watch something" and put on anime because it matched the break time. I really like the sh*tty draft method, will 100% try this!!
I could do pomodoro before and a lot of the times the concept would be really hard to grasp and or some assignment would be exhausting to do,so in the 5 minute break you can calm down,refresh yourself and 99 % od the time,the concept becomes way easier to grasp or if your exhausted it really refreshes you
OMG! I used to do this in school and college, only, with books and not anime... I'd read 20 pages and get back to my work. I'd always pick a book that's not a thriller, or maybe something I have been wanting to re-read for some time( the harry potter series)... This used to work out great
Thank you very much for your comment, now I am also gonna try reading books in breaks instead of watching anime, because my eyes too get tired quickly 😃
For me during anime time I watch anime with split screen. So if I hear my mom coming in I just remove Netflix(if you get what I mean) and pretend like I am studying haha
Tell your mum that you need to focus so don’t come into your room. Alternatively show her this video. I really don’t think parents should constantly be coming into your room to check up on you as it’s distracting when you’re trying to do work
Well, pomodoro breaks are not suposed to be relaxing. Its a brain manipulation trick to make better use of our short attention span. You do something else during 5 minutes not for YOUR rest, but for your BRAIN's rest. The 15 minutes break is the one to actually relax
I usually do double pomodoro's. 50 min work blocks, 10 min breaks. Still short enough to not be too rabbit holey but long enough that you can do SOMETHING
that was brilliant!!!!!!! I followed your advice for a month and managed to get a 92.2% in my tests while watching my favourite animes. Thank you so much
how are you not one of the big doctor youtubers yet ?? and damn i’ve been doing it the opposite this whole time, 4-5 hours of anime and 30 mins studying :/
My main issue with studying is my ADD monke brain. I read for 5-10 minutes, get distracted, watch TH-cam for an hour and wonder what happened to the part where I was supposed to study.
One thing I do is study with a friend or just someone else in general. You can even look up “study with me vids”. I feel like we are lacking a lot the social pressure to study during quarantine. But like, if u see someone working and then u are watching anime, it makes u more self conscious about watching anime. Like u kinda think “oh they are studying and doing something productive, I’m just sitting here.” This way u get some motivation to study
I know this is a bit late for a response but, what you have to do with that is find a workaround. As for your example, one simple way to try to help with your ADD is to be mindful, like doing 5-10 minutes of meditation a day. Another thing is to block all the sites that you know won't be helpful towards your studies so that way there isn't a chance to get sucked into the rabbit hole and once you come to the realization that you just spent an hour watching something random on youtube. There is a lot of different and amazing content on youtube to do with self-development, productivity, studying and basically getting your life to where you want it. I have found a few good videos and channels which I could link if you would be interested in them. TLDR; Find workarounds to the problems you're facing.
My suggestion - 2 hrs studying (especially you have to finish an assignment or past paper) - 40 mins rest (2 episode s) - 5 mins more for stretching your body(you already sit for 2hrs and 40 mins!!!) - start studying again! Use it when you are preparing for your exam or chasing deadlines😂
Really enjoyed your take on studying Josh. I'm trying to learn animation, and just couldn't figure out why the 25/5 method wasn't appealing to me. Thank you for thoughts on longer studying chunks
It's as expected for any degree really. How many hours were you at highschool for? About 7 hours for me, although that includes a 1 hour lunch break. Homework ontop and you are still studying more at highschool than uni which is considered either full time or part time (full time being 4 papers a semester). Of course if you're already knowledgable you can get by with less study, but if you're spending $900 on each paper (cost in NZ which is cheaper than america I assume but don't know other countries), you really want to learn shit. Uni is basically a replacement for a fulltime job. It's really parent's money and you're countries uni support which dictates whether you need a job on the side.
@@caenir I'm a graduate actually! I just got a degree in theatre arts. When you break it down like that, when it came to memorization, rehearsal, and general studies, I guess I WAS studying about 5 hours a day now that I think about it. I don't think I realized it until your comment, probably because I wasn't thinking of it as studying haha. Also "papers?" Is that was you guys call classes in NZ? Because 4-5 classes a semester is pretty typical in America, and they're also around $900-1500 each.
@@skyty0 I'm doing computer science which is mainly practical assignments. I don't consider it as studying but sometimes I put 5 hours in at once without breaking. But it was fun as I chose a degree I would enjoy and started off pretty decent at. Like study as it appears in movies/tv looks quite daunting, but that's really up to what you take We either call it papers or courses. I don't think there's much difference between them. Classes is what we called it at highschool so I guess it's a way to seperate them. For pricing NZ recently introduced first year being fees free. Currency puts the low end of your $900 usd up to 1,250 nzd. But I guess the big separator there is textbooks. I was only "required" to have one math textbook for the whole year which was just $40 brand new and my grades didn't suffer from it.
@@caenir Good on you for taking a practical major haha! I'm actually teaching myself programming in my spare time, wishing I took CS. America has a similar program coming down the line under the new presidency. University is still just as expensive, but anyone can get an associates at a community college for basically free now. I already had something similar because of the financial aid I qualified for, but it's cool to see that is becoming widespread now. Here's to loan forgiveness, for both of our countries!

I actually commenced this amazing technique last term; I managed to complete 100+ pages of a chemistry textbook and also improve in my other areas of study (then I when into quarantine and deter studying). I recommend this technique to anyone who has a terrible attitude towards timetables/ reserving time. I have major exams in June/ July and from today I'm continuing this technique(2x harder) and commencing Rurouni kenshin (1996-1998).
the way i always thought 5 minute breaks were way too short and would end up procrastinating more anyways because it was too short... definitely gonna try this method this semester !
I’ve wondered how on Earth ppl chill in 5 mins!! Like doesn’t the rly short time period stress you out bc all ur thinking of is how little time u have left? I mean, Ik most ppl can eat a granola bar in like 2 mins, but I wld v much like to enjoy it
5 minutes for me is actually enough, i mean for a nap...like remember those boring afternoon classes and you take a second of closing your eyes and suddenly when you snapped out of that short nap, you're suddenly refreshed (and also because you're scared the professor or teacher will caught you), in those five minutes I actually get a good nap, even if it's just five minutes then after that even my body's still tired my mind were refreshed, and i think having 5 minutes for your break time is better than no rest at all
I regret procrastinating because I have to show my parents my grades for a student led conference. I didn’t even get a chance to improve them much because we didn’t get told about this until recently. With most other years we got like a one month warning.
I've been adopting a resembling technique for the past months, and if anyone is suspicious I would like to say it actually works. I love the fact that you made this video, because most of the productive techniques out there on the internet only work for a certain demographic, and you made something that may actually help another demographic. The best productivity technique is the one that fits YOU, and that's why we need more varied content on the topic, so each person can find the right one.
I do something really similar to this with videogames. I usually made the study floor 30 minutes and the max 60 minutes and then would play Terraria or Minecraft for 30 minutes or play one day in Stardew Valley. It works amazingly well for when I'm not motivated at all to work on an assignment or a project in grad school.
This sounds great, you're actually emphasising enjoying yourself, and pairing that with studying sounds good too. Will definitely be trying this, thanks!
This actually helped me out, like you said the whole hour I studied I was looking forward to watching the episode but that didn't take my attention off my studies and my productivity level went up, thank you for this video, love it!! Life changer!!
I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels like sometimes 25 minutes is too short to actually concentrate. I do 40-50 min of studying and 10-20 min break, but I don’t watch anime lol I think I should start reading books in between
in my school in russia we always had 45 min lecture followed by 15 min break. the workflow was incredible. when i transferred schools and started studying in europe, i noticed that there were NO BREAKS?????? like we could have 2 hour lecture and then only 10 min break and after another 2 hrs a big lunch break? which always seemed so confusing to me.. needless to say, i couldnt keep myself focused

Proceeded to binge anime for the rest of the day xD Jokes asides i think you shared some pretty good techniques like having a reward (watching anime) at the end of the habit to make it feel more gratifying which helps to do it more often and the shitty draft to help overcome that inital inertia of starting anything
Before I came across your video I had SO MUCH problem with focusing and just play games whole day but after trying out your idea after my midterms I aced the whole term! I never thought this was possible thank you so much!
Doesn't work with AOT for me because my head would be filled with theories and what ifs after watching a single episode. So I jumped to slice of life and old animes instead. Currently writing my PhD thesis with this method, wish me luck!
Why this didnt come into my life earlier? Now i can watch animes without feeling guilty of my abandoned responsibilites. The regular pomodoro doesnt work with me. Thank you my guy
Will definitly try this, thank you. Also, i appreciate the bloopers at the end because it is important to let the natural flow of the video recording dictate how long the video will be.
@@chrisb.heckons637 i did the homework in the lesson that it was due in and i got a decent mark although to be fair the teacher was one of the nicer ones
Ngl expected it to be the other way around but that’s great for you! Being productive AND enjoying your time is important (yeah, why we all clicked on this video)
Omg i actually did the same thing as his “shitty draft” and IT DOES WORK my reports were all 80% and above just because i stop procrastinating and do the half ass job and alter on the 2nd time
in freshman year of college, i took a graphic novel literature class (coincidentally we read manga in that class too lol) and that prof was the BEST literature prof I had because he literally TAUGHT us how to make shitty drafts. He even made those part of our assignment to make people less stressed about writing. And now i literally can't write papers without doing a shitty draft first. Weeb professors know what's up!
This is really great. I guess one needs to have very strong self-control. To be able to not click on the next episode can be quite challenging. Moreover, for a lot of people (at least for me), building that mindset for long hours of work is very difficult. Once you get into the flow, very long breaks or major distractions can risk you getting thrown out of that mindset, thus hurting your concentration. But if you master this, it is a really efficient way to get work done because of its amazing reward system. This is something, as you rightly said, the Pomodoro lacks. Love your content and waiting for more of such uploads!
So there is this Pomodoro timer called "Forest" and it actually helped me stick to the timer and not half-ass studying by stopping 15 minutes early. Every time you start a session you plant a tree and if you stop the timer before it ends the tree dies (You murderer). This weird technique tricked my brain into wanting to make use of that 45 minutes and actually study so give it try if you want.
I tried it out. God damn this really works! This is the best feedback loop for learning 🤩. I studied 6 hours today and this is really better than a pomodoro. You put in the work and get as a reward to watch a show. I am going to cultivate this.
Long term review: Animedoro is very nice for me when I have to sit down and have nothing else to do besides learning. If I have a normal day with lectures and meetings and such I found it distracting for me. TLDR: On weekends yay, in the week nay.
I just want to say thanks so much for this idea. I don’t watch anime but I love cartoons so you can say I’ve been doing a a cartoonodoro technique instead haha. I study for 50 mins then watch 1 episode of early season SpongeBob, powerpuff girls, gumball, what have you. Most cartoon episodes are 10 mins in length so it’s a 50/10 ratio. Three sessions and that’s already 2.5 hours of studying with only 30 minutes of breaks and it feels so much more rewarding, and I can genuinely enjoy my breaks instead of stressing over the fact that I’m wasting work time. Love this too because an episode has a set start and end time, like a built-in timer, making it so much easier to stop and get back to studying again. Never got the pomodoro technique but this twist on the concept has truly saved me
I AM GOING TO DO THIS WITH MY K-drama's I am addicted to! (I also love anime though) A typical Korean drama is around 1h long. So if I divide that into 3, I can watch 20 min and then get back to studying. (I CAN'T WAIT TO DO THIS LATER ON THE DAY!!) I used to do this differently before university; first I studied and crammed the whole day, so at the end of the day I could watch an episode as my reward. The problem was that many times I couldn't control myself and started binging more and more episode's because I worked too hard and too long the whole day. As a result, I went to sleep way too late and was sleepy in school. Thanks for this simple, but incredibly helpful tip!!!
I totally love your animedoro concept because I personally pomodoro kind of like a rushed up or hurried up. By the time I get to actually focus on what I'm studying and actually get into the momentum, the timer goes of and it's time for break which I don't really need. So I follow the 60-20 pomodoro. It works for me and I squeeze in stuff like stretching, small workouts, a nap, meal, TH-cam and Netflix. 7-9 cycles of this side a day doesn't feel tiring at all. So yay.
High-school senior here. I've always tried doing pomodoro but I felt like it never worked (also I always take a little more than a 5 minute break). Now I'm hoping animedoro will save my senioritis ass
Hello Josh. I don't know if you will ever read this, but I really want to thank you for introducing this unique study method. I am on a recovery from depression, and I am currently on a break from applying for jobs, so I fill my vacancy with online courses, prepping for GRE (Graduate Record Examination), and doing other productive things. I graduated on January 2021, and I want a fresh start until I fully recover from depression. I tried to find a study method that would work for me, but it's so hard to keep focused, especially when you're still depressed. I watched another TH-camr's video and she used this Animedoro method, so I came back to this video. I vaguely remember watching this before, but I did not apply it to my study method. I finally tried this and modified it a little bit to suit my preferences (I only allow myself to watch 2-3 episodes of anime, no matter how many hours I study in a day), but it worked. It's been two days and I hope I can keep sticking to this method. And I'm learning Japanese, so I find watching anime in between studying really beneficial for my Japanese listening skills. My dream is to get a master's degree in Japan in 2-3 years. I will come back to this comment and thank you by the time I have reached that dream. p.s: if you are depressed, please seek professional help. a lot of people love you. You are not alone. We can do this.
When people say they don't have time to do things they love don't have good time management skills which is most people. Like you always have time to watch Anime or whatever you enjoy doing you just don't have good time management skills. That's something i also lack too. Sadly it's also something that people don't even take to their everyday lives even after college. Like the benefits of time management is immense.

With all that being said, my strategy was as followed:
Study for *at least* an hour (always pushing myself to complete the task I started);
An anime episode;
Repeat until meal time~
Eat;
Work on something I want for half an hour (cardio/piano/Mandarin/Spanish/programming/stock market/etc.);
Repeat from start~
I also created a couple reminders for myself (some were being followed way before the strategy above):
Weekends and weekdays are basically the same;
Practicing something everyday for 15 minutes is far better than doing it once a week for 2 hours straight;
There is barely no excuse for not separating *at least* an hour per day to study;
Life is like a very complex game with an infinite amount of variables.

Well, pomodoro breaks are not suposed to be relaxing. Its a brain manipulation trick to make better use of our short attention span. You do something else during 5 minutes not for YOUR rest, but for your BRAIN's rest. The 15 minutes break is the one to actually relax

My main issue with studying is my ADD monke brain. I read for 5-10 minutes, get distracted, watch TH-cam for an hour and wonder what happened to the part where I was supposed to study.
That's my life right now. Hopefully I'll get that fixed with meds.
That's why he said to keep your phone away and wear a watch so you don't get the excuse to go check your phone for time
I know this is a bit late for a response but, what you have to do with that is find a workaround.
Thats why you should try this
My suggestion
- 2 hrs studying (especially you have to finish an assignment or past paper)
- 40 mins rest (2 episode s)
- 5 mins more for stretching your body(you already sit for 2hrs and 40 mins!!!)
- start studying again!
Use it when you are preparing for your exam or chasing deadlines😂

"I studied for 5 hours a day"
Remind me to never major in chemistry

Like study as it appears in movies/tv looks quite daunting, but that's really up to what you take
We either call it papers or courses.
I was only "required" to have one math textbook for the whole year which was just $40 brand new and my grades didn't suffer from it.

ikr. I don't even count 5 minute "breaks" as breaks. For me it's either study or don't.

Same here! I'm glad I'm not alone!
Forest + Animedoro = perfection
Yes I use it too. It really tricks you too keep studying
glad to know people use it!
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate your long term review, I want to try out animedoro to balance between my weeb self and work :D
(I CAN'T WAIT TO DO THIS LATER ON THE DAY!!)
I used to do this differently before university; first I studied and crammed the whole day, so at the end of the day I could watch an episode as my reward. The problem was that many times I couldn't control myself and started binging more and more episode's because I worked too hard and too long the whole day. As a result, I went to sleep way too late and was sleepy in school.
Thanks for this simple, but incredibly helpful tip!!!
Did it work for you?
Dude I've never felt more motivated in my life THIS IS SO COOL

@@gadipudinavyanth1927 thanks, didn't notice
I totally love your animedoro concept because I personally pomodoro kind of like a rushed up or hurried up. By the time I get to actually focus on what I'm studying and actually get into the momentum, the timer goes of and it's time for break which I don't really need. So I follow the 60-20 pomodoro. It works for me and I squeeze in stuff like stretching, small workouts, a nap, meal, TH-cam and Netflix. 7-9 cycles of this side a day doesn't feel tiring at all. So yay.
I realised I did this subconsciously for olevels in the last month. My teachers thought I’ll get C’:s and D’s. I got 5As and 2Bs which was decent.
My teachers don't even give a f
@The OxyScape in my household those would be very disappointing grades... totally fine here
excellent not decent bro
High-school senior here. I've always tried doing pomodoro but I felt like it never worked (also I always take a little more than a 5 minute break). Now I'm hoping animedoro will save my senioritis ass
This. Has Changed. My Studying. Forever 👏🏼
Thank you very much for telling me this. My next video is gonna be a bit more serious, about being unhappy
@@yugiohforce1 How Did studying for only 5 hours a day help you? From an examination point of view, 5 hours a day is pretty less.
So he studied for 5hrs everyday and watched 2 hrs of anime???? Neat!!!
Aaaaaamiiiiii
Hi Army Lol 😂
Haaaaiyaaaa
When people say they don't have time to do things they love don't have good time management skills which is most people. Like you always have time to watch Anime or whatever you enjoy doing you just don't have good time management skills. That's something i also lack too. Sadly it's also something that people don't even take to their everyday lives even after college. Like the benefits of time management is immense.
