if you speak another language and are willing to subtitle this video, please do it there amara.org/en/videos/xPaMIxZL92bG/info/wwwyoutubecomwatchvkich_d6thqk/
    thank you.
the ted talk at the start of this video may be found here: th-cam.com/video/pN34FNbOKXc/w-d-xo.html
i'd also like to mention that this is a supportive community, regardless of how long you study/how hard you study, at the end of it we're all students and here to learn. I ask that you refrain from toxic productivity in this chat as we try to encourage each other to do better, thank you.

I’m currently prepping for what’s supposedly the “world’s toughest exam” and while I’m usually motivated to at least study for 10 hours a day, these past few days have been the worst few days of my life. While my parents are extremely supportive, mentally and physically, I feel I’m at the lowest point of my life. Long story short, the sheer anxiety and pressure of competitive exams, the fact that I’m gonna be 24 in the next few days while half the people I know in life are doing exceedingly well made me have a massive emotional meltdown at the dinner table. My parents are well, your typical Asian parents, yes they are supportive but they equally blamed me for loosing my shit because you know “no one forced anything on me and taking up this exam was my own personal choice”. I get where they are coming from but let’s just say the entire episode made me loose track of at least 2-3 days of my study routine. After those horrible days of tears and guilt about not having studied at all, my parents and me talked things through and we reconciled.
Now comes the second part of this doom show past 10 days - I caught on a massive viral infection. The day I decided to resume my routine, that very day I came down with a 102 fever, immense body pain, headache, sinusitis and chest congestion. I decided to take things easy first, took meds, visited the doctor and just slept for the first 2 days. But let’s just say it’s been close to 6 days now and I feel no better. My drive to study is lost and I spent the last few days doom scrolling on TH-cam watching vlogs of people studying for the same exam as me and feeling more guilt over everything that’s happening. But you know what James, thank you. These past 10 days have been nothing but horrible for me but listening to you made me feel somewhat at ease. Listening to you emphasise on the drive to do something turned a light switch in my head and made me see things over and above the self imposed guilt cave I made for myself. I don’t know what will happen tomorrow but I don’t think I’m giving up just yet. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this video James!
Edit: So it's been seven months since I wrote this comment, my exam is scheduled to take place in less than 40 days and I would like to thank all of you who wished me luck. These past few months have been tough but I've being doing my best to remain consistent and keep my head above murky waters and to remember to just slow down and breathe sometimes. All was going good but a fortnight back I was hit with the terrible news that my grandfather passed away. He was very dear to me and one of the lead cheerers in my life and just a day before he passed away he had asked me to work very hard and diligently for the final leg of this exam. What's worse is that he had told me he wants to see me passing it but due to suddenness of it all, it ended up remaining his last wish. It took me a full 10 days to process what ended up happening and I would say, now I'm somewhat back on track. My family distributed amongst ourselves his personal items and each person chose an item that reminds them the most of him and I decided to keep his watch. It remains on my study table as I write this comment and it will also remain with me when I sit for my exam and for my entire remaining life. While I was devastated with what happened, I'm now even more motivated than ever to fulfil my grandfather's last wish. I will try and update what ends up happening and I wish that anyone who's going through a tough time remains strong and gets through to achieve their end goals. As my grandfather said, never give up!

not saying hard work won't be rewarded, but I just to say life sucks, which means not every hard work get rewarded, not every good intention results in good thing happening.
You need to know when you need to cut off some people, you need to know when you need to put everything, know when not to pursue some stuff.
It is hard, it's not as easy as reading any book or doing daily good habits, it's a culmination of many complicated stuff which I probably say no one can explain in detail everything, which is why everything usually oversimplified to several bullet points, some encouraging speech and stuff.

Those versions of yourself when you were younger, hell pre covid are the stepping stone to who you have become. You lived, failed, learned, rose, grew and strived for greatness. Not to be great for a divine or fake reason, for you. In the end, we are what we grow beyond. Thank you my man it helped me see and remember what it is to strive and persevere again.

edit: When I was writing this, I was preparing for high school entrance exam. I was studying with his lives and there were some days which I studied over 10 hours. I take the exam in 6th of June and... I wish I didn't studied that much. There were 6 lessons, turkish, revolution history, religious culture and english for verbal; math and science for numerical. NOTHING was in the exam that I studied for turkish, nothing. I would have done history in the exam if I didn't studied too. In science, I think it was good but they asked very difficult in math. There are 20 questions and they wrote one question for every page. One question was a different version of a question which was in the university exam. They asked one high school subject too.
I wish I didn't prepared that much for this exam. I didn't deserve this result even I studied for 10 months. I am only 14 but I feel older.

As a therapist I can only recommend to change your posture every couple minutes, so you stay somewhat in motion

    • @brindhan
      @brindhan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

I have this concern too. Recently, I found that sitting in the same posture and studying for hours, every day, is not a healthy thing. But I have to study for so long and so hard like that to achieve my dream. Since you said you are a therapist, could you suggest some ways to study for a long time without affecting my health? Also, is it okay to walk and study at the same time, I mean, like reading a book while walking?

    • @le_jiggy_garcon
      @le_jiggy_garcon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +60

@@brindhan I would suggest to just stand up while reading, walking could maybe a little distracting, but you can try this too.
Try to change the position of your legs every 10-20 minutes (like sitting on your feet, putting them under the chair, put just one leg up, sit on one leg etc etc) because your spine will automatically move with your legs and pelvis. Also change where you sit on the chair (sit on the edge straight, or slouch a little leaning back).
If you have and gaming chair, or office chair, just spin it. As you might see, the point is, not sit straight, but to playfully change your position in everyway possible.
Maybe consider to buy equipment, which holds your books, tablet or monitor, so you don't have to look down all the time. Also pezziballs are very good for you, you could sometimes sit on them instead of a chair.
At last I can only suggest to start workout your core, if you don't want to lift weights, becaus it gives your the strength to sit longer without pain. At least mobilize your spine every couple hours, by crossing your arm above your chest, so your left hand touches your right shoulder and the right hand the left should. Then slowly move your arms as far as possible up and down for like a minute, so you flex and extend the spine (also move your head!!). After this you can do big circles with your elbows (still crossed arms), so you have rotation, lateral flexion and extension and flexion. Laying on the ground, or over the ball (or a rolled up blanket) can help you to relax your muscles and stretch them.
Hope it will help you, I would be really interested what the results are :)

I see people in the comments romanticizing studying half a day, but it really isn't as easy as you think. As he said, the quality needs to be high too. I think studying 12 hours a day or taking up a significant portion of your day isn't healthy and realistic for most people. You'll probably have low sleep, no time for hobbies or skill development, burnout, mood swings, you may even lose friends. He literally said not to push yourself too hard, just because he can do it doesn't mean everyone can and its not fun. You need to take care of your health and ensure quality over quantity of studying. The amount of time you study for isn't equivalent to your success or value. Effort doesn't always breed success. Listen to what he says, dude.

    • @leafleafleaf9272
      @leafleafleaf9272 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Yeah, 12 hours a day is overkill. It isn’t even half the day cause you have to sleep. Studying that amount of time would surely just mean you’re not studying WELL cause you can’t concentrate for that long. Why not find better ways to remember things, like visual stimuli, explaining to others etc. And the 3:30 am video? I can’t, I thought that was a parody!!!

The meaning of life is our relationship with God. These four steps are the key to getting a Divine Revelation directly from him. They are something you'd eventually do if you took God seriously enough to read the Bible, while implementing its teachings. They are, forgive your parents, break down before Jesus, ask for forgiveness, and read three books of the Bible. Step four requires the first book of each testament, and one you chose yourself. The order is actually important. The steps build on each other. Each one primes your soul for the next. To be forgiven we must forgive. Mathew 6: 14-15. That's why forgiving others has to come before asking for forgiveness. Jesus will not forgive you until you've at least done the bare minimum, our parents. They're supposed to be easiest to forgive, because they've fed, housed, loved us to some degree. Our problems with them are supposed to represent our problems with God. This is why the bare minimum to receive the revelation is our parents. You'll still have to forgive everyone though, but that comes much easier after meeting God. I'm extremely serious and very literal. I'm not talking about signs, nor feelings, nor prayer. It's an actual literal pulled out of your body direct one on one conversation, nothing you can miss. nor misinterpretae. The vast majority of christans never bother to do what God wants seriously, so most never get this revelation. To most outside church their Bible is a paper weight, or at best a virtue signal. Their religion is in what other people think about them, not their relationship with God. Please do those steps I mentioned, there really is a Divine Revelation waiting for all of us. There's extraordinarlly important information we all desperately need in this revelation, but those who get it are forbidden to share it. The Truth that Jesus Christ is Lord is written on every human heart. We all have that knowledge inside us, but we bury it under mountains of pain and anger. Those steps clear away that garbage inside you, letting God heal you, so that his words boom clearly inside your soul. The entire point of our existence here is to Trust God enough that we pay him this mustard seed of Faith, so his Grace can remove the stain sin has left on our souls. Everyone that does not get this Grace is not forgiven of any of their sins, even if they turned around and we're the best person from 25 to death. Without Grace those first sins are still counted against you, tying you to the devil's punishment. It's not about being a good person, It's about being forgiven for when you weren't. The Bible is Truth. Please do those steps and see for yourself. Please take your salvation seriously.,,

It was a very sincere video, you showed yourself exactly as you are, this is very obvious. Even if you won't be able to achieve the things you dream of at the size you imagined, you should be proud of yourself just for being able to reach this level of maturity at this age. The important thing is not to go through difficulties, but to come out of them stronger.
In addition, I find very beneficial that you explain the difference between motivation and drive, and especially by referring to self improvement books. Your desire to pass on what you have learned to people also shows your desire to help people. I hope you will always be successful in your life :)

    1. Understanding and adopting the growth mindset
    2. Drive vs. Motivation
-don't rely on motivation (relying on motivation will ultimately bring you failure)
    -drive continues while motivations stops
    -motivation is viotile
-use the fact that you want to succeed to file you drive
-understand why you want to do what you want to do
-drive will get you places where motivation will not
    3. Build strong habits
    -creating a journal
-they're what keep you consistent and what keeps you going
-makes things become like second nature
-it's easy to get obsessed how long you study, you need to be obsessed with how deep you get
-high quality work=time spent x quality of focus
-depth matters a lot more than how long
    -"get into the zone"
-figure out where you're comfy studying
    4. If you're burnt out, be patient
-this lifestyle is hard, stay persistent, take care of yourself, it'll blow over
-things come with both positives and negatives
    5. Physical health
    -be active outside of studying
-maybe start running a lot (marathon or treadmill)
    -daily workout
-fix your posture or your back will start hurting really bad
    -eat healthy foods
-also heavily impacts your mental health so TAKE THIS PART HEAVILY

Well that is normal when you view studying a subject as "work".. What that means is that you cannot relate to the subject matter nor are you enjoying it.. When you find something you truly enjoy and want to learn about, the "studying" part comes easily and it is not work anymore. This is why seeking out and searching for your passion is so important. Life is short, so being HAPPY and doing something you enjoy doing for a living is going to make all the difference in your level of fulfillment in life. Money is of course important for stability and security, but it is not all that matters. I would rather live modestly doing something I love than be a miserable wealthy person.

You and Mika made me start studying again and I got my best score in an English test and a certificate in accounting last year. Thank you. I think you are already socially successful on TH-cam. Don't cry, smile ☺ Big Hug from Japan.

Finally some real advice from one of the realest person on the platform.
It's sooo refreshing compared to the overproduced, filtered and flashy videos that populate the "motivation & drive" portion of youtube. This one is special because it's a video about motivation that doesn't come from the most shallow, energized "productivity-high" that many creators kinda force themselves into before making these kinds of videos, but instead comes from hardships and confrontation, stillness and resilience.
This kind of advice just hit different when it comes from someone that's always present, putting in the work day after day, in front of thousands of people to see. You can see the rawness of the emotions, and the heartfelt challenges that one must endure to get to that point. Thanks so much for being on here and inspire so many people in real time everyday.

Commenting here so that I get notified when someone likes or comments under this, so that I can come back here again and again and be reminded of the discipline that one needs to follow to achieve something substantial.
