It all depends on the engine your starting with and ecu type that will run it. Intake cam with 2 wire cam sensor will not easily work in 32bit ecu (3wire) car. As for 20X into 04 fxt, yes that works! Normally youd leave the exhaust avcs left unhooked up with an option of retarding the exh cams to get a near mimic of the original 255 timing. Can this problem be solved by putting your computer and the wiring of the wrx sti? Is the bsm or computer compatible with the rest of the subaru legacy equipment? First of all, Thanks
Your best to swap your 255 intake cam shafts into the sti motor, then swap in the 3wire sensor from your 255. Youll have to slightly notch the sensor holes in the cyl heads off the sti motor, so that the sendors line up correctly with the cam shaft. Thats the easiest and cheapest way to do that swap!
@@TheSubieSanctuary Excellent friend, the outlook for my situation is becoming clearer, just a few questions: do the 2.5 camshafts fit the 2.0? After making that change, is the hole made to insert the 3-wire sensor? Is it one on each side, head or butt?

It all depends on the engine your starting with and ecu type that will run it.
Intake cam with 2 wire cam sensor will not easily work in 32bit ecu (3wire) car.
As for 20X into 04 fxt, yes that works! Normally youd leave the exhaust avcs left unhooked up with an option of retarding the exh cams to get a near mimic of the original 255 timing. At the same time the exh cams can also be left completely as is.
@@TheSubieSanctuary I was wondering which ej205 would have worked in the fxt. It’s the same as the sti. The motor in this video does it use the 3 wire cam sensors?
@@zcivicef the jdm ej205 that would have worked in The fxt would have been same engine in this video.
Single avcs, 3 wire intake cam sensors.
However, these come with plastic intake manifold and you would then swap on your fxt cast manifold and harness
@@TheSubieSanctuary that’s what I was verifying. So single avcs, plastic intake and air pump should have 3 wire camshaft sensors. I was under the impression that none of the jdm 2.0 had the 3 wires except the 20x/y and I really didn’t want to have quad avcs and not be able to use it. Thank you
@@zcivicef correct! Ya it is tough when shopping for the motors because most of the importers/vendors honestly dont know themselves what the motors are or what they are compatible with. But you are correct in your above info and im glad i could help!
Did u use the oem ecu or did u have to buy a jdm ecu for the ej205
Oem 255 ecu

How about a JDM EJ205 forester engine into a USDM. 04 XT ?? Will it be the same method ???
Needs to be a jdm plastic intake manifold single avcs to work in 04 Xt.
This 16bit ecu version will not work on your 32bit ecu 04 fxt
When you do this swap does the exhaust manifold need to be swapped?
No, you can leave exhuast and up pipe and even turbo if youd like
Are there any benefits of keeping the jdm turbo rather than using my turbo in my 13 wrx?
@@deadpoolspiderman9179 header and up pipe will be the same as your 13, as for turbo, your 13 will have vf52 which is biggest turbo for the 08-14.
The jdm would likely come with a smaller turbo.

I had just finished my ej205 swap but it feels quite slow lol does the tune help get it back to what it felt like?
@@deadpoolspiderman9179 ya tune is definitely going to help a lot. Never can replace the torque of the 2.5 though. But after a tune it should at least get back to where it was
Hello friends, greetings from Zacatecas Mexico! I have a subaru legacy gt 2.5 2005 (ej25) but I broke the engine, right now I am doing an engine change for a wrx sti 2004 (ej20), I made the mistake of buying it since my subaru originally came with 2 position sensors 3 wire camshaft and this engine we are finding a 2 wire camshaft sensor!
@@TheSubieSanctuary
Excellent friend, the outlook for my situation is becoming clearer, just a few questions: do the 2.5 camshafts fit the 2.0? After making that change, is the hole made to insert the 3-wire sensor? Is it one on each side, head or butt?
@@christianbeltran1864 yes the 255 cam shafts fit the 2.0. And yes the sensor fits the hole. The issue is the is slightly off in the direction it should be. Most people oval it out a little bit and use a paper gasket and sealant
@@TheSubieSanctuary I really appreciate you friend, you are a good person! Abusing your trust, will you have a reference to where I could drill the head or stock? If you have any pictures that would be great!

Im wanting to get a 2006 Legacy Gt with a blown up Ej255, he’s including a Jdm Ej20 with dual avcs with the plastic manifold. Would it be the same concept as this video? Or do I have to swap over any timing or retard timing 1 tooth?
@@Owensti with the duel avcs it is ideal to turn back the exh gears. It would be fine if you didnt but without doing it, it looses some torque.
Same process otherwise though
hey so i want to do this swap for my 06 non sti wrx. i have the ej20x and the 255 longblock. i do not however have any of the other stuff from the ej255. what all do i need to buy that would have been swapped onto the jdm motor? i’ve been on forums but i have no way of knowing who actually knows what they’re talking abt.
Your car is originally a non turbo
@@TheSubieSanctuary what?
@@adriandominguez9207 was your 2006 a non turbo? Like you said it was non sti/wrx.
@@TheSubieSanctuary oh i’m sorry that is confusing. i meant a wrx non sti.
@@adriandominguez9207 ahh ok, i was gona say 😂
So youll need entire 06-07 wrx intake manifold and engine harness.
Or 04-07 sti intake manifold and engine harness.
So I'm wondering how good are these engines?I've heard they're basically JDM STI bottom ends and the heads are amazing, but that's hear say. Rare to see a plastic intake manifold ej205. Also does anyone know the compression ratio? I did a 20y in my outback xt with a vf52. It ran 300/300 no problem. I swapped exhaust cams on it and was a pita. Wish I had bought one of these.
Also not related at all but do you know if I bought a JDM ej255 from a 10-11 legacy gt. If I used my turbo manifold, up pipe and intake manifold would that work in an 05 legacy gt? Thanks in advance.
Hey brother, these single avcs 32 bit ej205’s are standard compression ratio. Not a high comp like 20x/y.
As for the 10-11 lgt engine into earlier turbo car. Yes that has been done! I haven’t had the pleasure myself but I had a friend who did.
@@TheSubieSanctuary hey thank you for responding. So do you think the plastic manifold cover EJ205 is as strong, or stronger than the 20x/y? I guess the reason why I'm wondering is I've got some gas in my oil. And a weird leak down on my passenger side of my engine. This was a fully forged EJ255 with STI intake manifolds. And I'm thinking we only tuned it to 320 anyway why not just go with one of those engines save myself thousands of dollars.
@@garagedoorinstallationandr2625 the 20x/y is a strong or stronger then the plastic mani 205. 20x/y has forged piston crowns. We have tuned the 20x to 365whp without issue for many years of use after.
We try to tell people 350whp is the safe max for 20x as it is an open deck engine. But the plasti mani ej205 is also an open deck
@@TheSubieSanctuary oh gotcha. I had just read somewhere the the u heads on the ej205 were very good. Also lower compression is better for our crappy gas. I put a 20x in my outback a while back and was pushing close to 300 with a vf52. However I had 26 tune revisions because it was the first one my tuner had attempted.
Now I have some 1000cc injectors and a 20g with all the supporting mods. I think I could see 350 no problem. Anyway this is very cool. I was concerned that my engine was toast. Now I'm a little excited it is! Now I can put something in for under 1000$. And beat it until it blows. And then do it again!!
What fuel do you guys run up there to get 350? Is it higher than 93?
@@garagedoorinstallationandr2625 we get 94 here
So what's the real advantage in doing this swap?
You save a lot of money sourcing a 2.0 v.s a 2.5 and the 2.0’s are incredibly robust and reliable compared to the 2.5’s. They have a higher redline but that’s a subjective trade off for loosing some torque

Basically follow this video just the same, leave the exh avcs unplugged and thats it! If you want to go the next level (not necessary) but if you were interested.
You would remove timing belt from your 20X and retard the exh cams 1 tooth each which will put the exh valve timing closer to stock 255.
