In this video I take you behind the scenes on a portrait shoot with a bride at a waterfall.
This was the first time I had done a portrait shoot at a waterfall. My aim was to use a variable ND filter to allow me to shoot at a long exposure and use an off camera flash with a MagMod MagSphere attached to freeze the bride. Before the shoot I wasn't sure whether this would work but I am very pleased with the final photographs.
All the photographs in the video were taken with my Sony A9 and a combination of my Sony 16-35mm 2.8 lens, Sony 85mm 1.8 lens and the Helios 44-2 58mm lens. I used a Godox AD200 speedlight to light the bride.

What a joy to be able to meander about once more and with the PERFECT end results,such a great teacher and Inspiration Neil! The location could not have been more perfect but then again it’s the artists vision behind the camera that makes it all come together! Great work. I've done a few portrait shots with waterfalls in the background. I usually take two shots, one at a slow shutter speed for the water, and another exposed for the person I'm taking the portrait of then blend them together in Photoshop. I think your method came out better than mine and I guess I'm going to have to pack my strobe and other gear next time. You're an inspiration Neil.
That is very kind of you Ralph, thank you very much. Yes, there is nothing wrong with your method at all, I just thought I'd see if I could make it work in camera. At first I was struggling, I think because the exposure I was using was too long (anything over 1 second meant that Beth was blurred) but once I had that right it worked well. Again, thank you very much :)

I do have the MagBeam but I have only used it for it's other use so far; where you can use it to project shapes and patterns. I would be interested to know too if it would work in this sort of scenario - great question. I will have to try it next time

Neil Je n ai pas de 85mm mais 1 Nikon 50mm 1.4 et le Tamron 70-200mm G2 F2.8 . J utiliserais le 70-200 var mon ND 400 est de diamètre 77mm . Vivement de voir de nouveaux de tes tournages 👍📸📸
Ne vous inquiétez pas, vous devriez pouvoir acheter un filtre ND pour n'importe quelle taille de filtre, je pense? J'ai acheté le mien sur Amazon. Encore merci beaucoup! :-)

Thank you very much! As there was quite a lot of ambient light my flash power will have been either at either full or half power :-)
Can you shoot flash with slow shutter to get the painterly effect in waterfall? I tried that on a portrait at F4.0 shutter at 1/25 a second and my subject was blurred.

Once again Neil, brilliant explanation and photography. Did you use the second curtain, when using the strobe, as this in my understanding, allows a ghost like image and captures the last move of the model🤔. I’m not a professional & still learning. Thank you for all your stunning videos.

Good question, I am not sure to be honest, the problem of the movement was more to the fact that there was a lot of ambient light, so I could not get the image I wanted at an exposure as long as say, 1 second. But 1/3 seemed to be a sweet spot where I got the motion of the water and Beth was not blurred. It was a fun trial and error exercise! Great question though and thank you very much again :-)

This was a great video. Loved the location and all the information. Just curious what would have happened if you used rear curtain sync on your long exposure.
Thank you very much Pete! Using rear curtain wouldn't have made much difference (I don't actually know if I used rear or front curtain) when using the shutter speeds I was using. Plus the water wasn't being affected by the flash. It's a good question though!

Neil what's the mic you use for vlogging when out and about?.. and are you still using the Sony a9 while walking and talking ?
Hi, I use a Sony ICD-TX650 (you can see it clipped on to my shirt) I'm not sure if that is the best option as the audio is never as good as I would like, but it does the job. The camera I use when I am walking is a DJI Osmo Pocket with the extension rod - it's awesome
Seems pretty good when u are using it.. seems clear and crisp, could the problem always be the fact as photographers we are to overly harsh on ourselves, lol and always want better..
