I have been photographing for a few years, had exhibitions, watched online courses and videos but nothing gave me so much clarity as your videos. And also, I really hated flash photography until this video here! I followed you on IG as well, learning a lot from you even though we have very different styles!
Your timeline around 1120 you mentioned your assistant took the picture, and you preferred your pic. I Myself choose his as it more of non common photo, and you can crop in if needed. Your chosen pic doesn't really set a tone other than just a standard picture, with the shadows directly behind them. However both images are cool. Thanks for your provided info.
I would love to have seen the photo's before the post processing was done. I am sure tweaks were made and that is a lot of work to get just so. Amazing photographer!
VERY useful! Now that you explained that the shutter speed controls the ambient light, & the aperture controls the flash, I bet I will have more successful off-camera flash images, & will also succeed with experimental ideas. Also helpful: all the properly exposed vs flash examples. Thank you for this video! Salute!
Hello, loved this video! Some of the shots like the last one you didn't show the light placement. Also some of the shots you didn't show the camera settings. I know our setting would be different for each adventure but it's nice to know what setting you used for each. I heard you say it but it's better for us if we see it. I concluded with a thumbs up!
Loved the photos. I think it may be the best video on the subject I've seen so far. Good job. Plus: I'm really impressed with the light control in the video recording; so many photographers (who shoot amazing pictures) have weird lighting in their video narrations - you're in full control of it. Wonderful.
Man those shots with the light inside the car and inside the phone cabin, so gorgeous! I learned so much with this video, I can't wait to try it out! Thank you so much!!
Thank you for this. After watching tons of videos and spent money on tutorials, this is by far the best, and easy to understand, breakdown of flash photography. Thank you!!
Thanks Jiggy!! Great video!! I just started planing on using off camera flash… I bought 4 used YN600 flashes and one Godex ad200 with no instructions??!! This video is very helpful.
These. Are some amazing shots I am learning every void I was able to take my A1 out by the pool today with my gm135 and a magmod spear it was a bright day you make it look so easy I have a long way to go.but I am learning every time I try, thank you for taking the time to explain step by step and remembering we all mostly learning

Wow, truly stunning imagery. Thank you so much. This is exactly the type of video I love. The before and after with explanation of settings really helps close the disconnect between how my "properly exposed" (aka boring) looking pics look and how other photographers are able to create such impressive dramatic art. Please continue these videos. You are awesome
I learned off camera flash lighting from Monte Zucker, the photographer / teacher who introduced it to wedding coverage back when it switched to color prints and photographers discovered the flash on camera techniques they had used when shooting B&W couldn’t record a full range of detail in black suits and white dress at the same time. Studio photographer had solved the color print range problem by starting with neutral centered fill over the camera, or bounced off a white wall behind the camera to duplicate natural skylight fill with power adjusted until detail was recorded in the shadows at the desired aperture for DOF. Then to expose the highlights correctly on the shorter range color prints a Key light was added on top of the Fill, usually placed 45° to nose of subject for ideal 3D modeling of the nose and the creation of a ‘Mask” of highlights on forehead, eyes, cheeks, mouth and chin. What Monte did was mount a Graflex electronic flash 16” over the lens of the camera using a custom bracket he had made for his TLR Rolleiflex 2.8 with a second identical flash mounted on a modified medical IV pole which had a compact, stable cast steel base with casters, triggered optically by a simple Wein photocell trigger - all high tech back in the late 1960s. Exposure and light ratio were controlled by applying the inverse square law, shooting from 16, 11, 8 or 5.6 feet with Fill at that distance with the off camera flash places at 11, 8, 5.6 or 4 ft, respectively to keep it 2x brighter than the fill. Our baseline aperture was f/8 @ 11ft shooting distance, changing to f/11 @ 8ft and f/16 @ 5.6 and f/8 if moving out to 16 ft for a wide shot. What made it simple and so effective at capturing the full range of detail was always having foundational fill for the shadow on the camera over the lens on the bracket. My career took me behind the camera reproducing photos at the National Geographic the managing offset printing of magazines commercially and at a USIA printing center in Manila Philippines in a 29 year Foreign Service career but for my personal work I continued to use and teach that same two-flash Key / Fill approach, with digital camera since 2000 using a Stroboframe Camera-flip bracket, first with Vivitar and then in 2004 Canon ETTL flashes. Outdoors in sunlight with my Canon ETTL-II flashes I keep the A:B / Fill:Key ratio set to 1:2 which will record a full range of detail, using the sun as rim-light, Group A fill on bracket on camera and Group B Key on stand. After adjusting aperture for desired DOF and shutter and ISO to keep sunlit whites 1/3 below clipping in the playback all that is needed is an FEC adjustment to expose the front of a white dress or shirt in the shade of the sunlight 1/3 stop below the sunlit whites and 2/3 stop below clipping.
