Flash plus ambient light, movement and static with long exposure

  • Sometimes flash can be used with long exposures to create some great effects, in this tutorial i experiment with mixing light types , long exposures and rear curtain sync. beginners don't be put off it can easily be done outside at night with a good flash a garage light and a medium level dslr Any decent camera and flash will have a rear curtain sync ,sometimes known as second curtain synchronisation setting. Set those to on. then all you need is a long exposure, during the long exposure with the camera on manual, you will see the model in movement , then try again with a flash you will see a movement then at the end the subject will be frozen by the flash, a normal flash sync setting would have the flash fire at the start of the exposure leaving the movement at the end.
Any beginner photographer can take images like this, if you have a model of course.

wow awesome tutorial! I thought myself how to photograph when I purchased my first dslr earlier this year in februrary. I watch youtube videos and read online. I got the hang of it and I'm pretty good but there's new things I'm always learning. I loved this tutorial since I have been looking as to how to do long exposure photography with flash in the dark. I had read and seen a video about this before where they explained that flash freezes the subject but I never knew you could use it at the end. Very awesome! And I will try to put it into my photos!
BTW! Georgia is a beautiful model!!!!

Hi Phillip, thank you very much for this excellent tutorial. It took some practice but I was able to make some very cool imagery using small 4 " classical statues. I suspended cupid with dental floss and made him fly into the frame to " strike the heart " of a female . In another, " Clash of the Titans " I have Ajax rushing to confront Poseidon , in a nice swoosh , as he waves him off with the back of his hand. Next stop is the university for some athletes - it should be really, really cool. One error I made , was not considering the reflectivity index of my subjects, so the first shots with green figurines had no light trails, ( Cupid & company were white ) then I reasoned, the darker the subject, the, more light, longer shutter speed or wider aperture required. It was a great exercise that yielded great results. A fantastic skill to have in the kit. Thanks again, couldn't be happier. It goes with out saying , you are a great teacher and presenter. Keep up the great work !.

Stunningly beautiful images - especially the first one. I'm planning to try the same technique (rear curtain sync) on black swans in my local river. It's a pity that I won't be able to use side lighting (off camera flash) in this scenario. I'll be forced to use the speedlight on the camera. I guess I could try a diffuser to soften the flash at least.

What I like in your videos is that you show techniques that are quite accessible to the "average" photographer. You're showing here that even without the latest Zeiss lens, one can get GREAT results if stuff is used properly and if (mainly) we use our imagination. So true! Thank you!
