    In this video I give you my top tips and advice for shooting in very harsh light. This bridal portrait shoot video was recorded around 5 hours before sunset in the middle of summer so the sun was still very high in the sky which makes taking natural light photographs quite difficult.
    However, as I show you in the video, by following the tips I give in this video we can utilise the harsh light to produce really nice wedding day portrait photographs.
    All the photographs in this video were taken with my Sony A9 and I used the Sony 35mm 1.8, Sony 85mm 1.8, Sigma 135mm 1.8 and Canon 50mm 1.2 lenses.
    A huge thank you to Nina for modeling, Nina was absolutely amazing! (You can follow her here: / ninadiniro ) and also to my friend Toni Darcy for kindly filming this video for me. You can check out Toni's TH-cam channel here: / @tonidarcy

    I love the fact that at 8:50 you chose to face her to the sun and have a dark background for a more studio lit looking portrait! I always always always do back lit w the sun and add OCF. Thank you!

    I love the silhouette concept. Is it essential that the photographer 1. Shoot UP, at an extreme angle, or is that simply because shooting that high up means the sun is high in the sky and therefore harsh; 2. Shoot UP because the sun is smaller at that position than at sunset?
    Also, my experience is that unless the subject blocks the sun entirely, unsightly flare creeps into the image; did that happen here, but it was cleaned on the computer?

    It's very resourceful photography, but what about the fact that the model's hair gets lost in the background?

    Some nice stuff here. Can I ask why you always use the mechanical shutter? I recently bought an A9 and (especially in natural light) exclusively use the electronic shutter.

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much David! You will love the A9 :) I also use electronic shutter almost all the time too but when I am working with a model as I am in this video I will usually shoot in mechanical shutter so that they know when I have taken a shot. It is basically to help the model

      Thank you very much Paul! Yes, I do, but only really so that I can shoot long exposures in bright ambient light. A filter would have helped a little here but I don't tend to bother to be honest as they are quite faffy to use when you want to work fast

    Thank you Neil for this video. I have been fortunate not to have had many weddings in harsh sunlight until recently for weddings and has been somewhat of a challenge for myself. I have learnt from my mistakes and adapted what I know going forwards. Can I ask what is the attachement on the camera for your recording camera please? I really would like to vlog and just want to know the kit you have. I have to say as another wedding photographer, I love your content, really have learnt alot from your videos (shame I cannot do your workshops as they always clash with a wedding I have booked in) and I do really appreciate the time and effort you put in towards helping others. You also make myself reflect on my own work, what I need to improve, critique my own work and how I can adapt going forwards for my clients. Again thanks Neil, keep up the content. Oh btw I recently did a wedding near the spots in Manchester Cathedral and Glass art gallery and took your video you did last year as a guide to help for ideas for my clients, so again thank you for that.

      I always shoot manual white balance around 6000k. The only reason I don't include that in the video is that it really doesn't matter what I use because I shoot in RAW and so change the white balance when I am editing anyway :-)
