    What a very cool idea !!! Ok, days off come.... so I can try your trick !!! love it as always !! The more flash videos you do the more I learn . To me its the hardest part of everything and you make it so much easier . I love how you actually show us how to get the amazing shots you do Neil !!! My confidence would improve 100% to really get flash .

    :D I had the similar same idea with the foil, very nice vid Neil :) "I would never do something anything like this on a wedding day..." Well, about that... :D I try crazy, for me untested new things on the weddings all the time (never backfired), 90% of them came out surprisingly nice and that gives me the confidence to shoot on the edge kind of the whole time (of course I do safe shots in important moments). But I get the safe testing idea, + you develop skills faster this way, that is where I go slow I would say.

    Hi again, sir! This is the 1st video I've had the chance to watch for awhile. Was starting to have Redfern tutorial withdrawals. Another wonderful performance with awesome results! Question (which I hope is not redundant, but): What is the other contraption extending from your camera? Initially, I thought it was either a remote or additional flash. Thanks in advance. Hope you're doing well! Say hello to your parents for me, too, plse.

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard, aww I will indeed, thank you! That is very nice of you. Aah, that is just a flash bracket to hold my DJI Osmo Action (which is like a GoPro) so I can record the camera eye view on video. So it is nothing to do with photography, it is purely to hold a little camera to film what it is the camera is seeing to make my videos better :-)

    I like to place a round softbox about the same distance from the subject as the diameter of the round modifier. For a square or rectangular modifier - I place the distance about the same as the diagonal of the modifier...

    To make sure I can recreate this, is it best for the foil opening to be small? Is it best to get the lens as close to the foil as possible? Any other subtleties I should know?

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Curt, good questions! Yes, I would suggest the hole be as small as it can be whilst allowing you to shoot through and the distance between the lens and the foil depends on the lens you are using and the look you would like. I would definitely recommend having a play with the set up and trying out different distances as it really depends on the look you want 🙂

    very nice tuto. as french speaker, i appreciate the texts with camera and flash settings !
    i am not sure i understand. are you shooting all pictures through the gorilla+alu hole ? i thought it would just create same reflections "on top of alu" than in the bar you show.
    don't you think it is much easier to use INFINITE TEXTURE BOKEH in post production in photoshop with solid color clipped layer instead of making all this DIY on-site ?

    • @NeilRedfern
      @NeilRedfern  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My pleasure Marc, I really appreciate your support! Yes, all shots were taken by me shooting through a circle I had created in the tin foil so that the bokeh surrounded the model. It may be possible to do this in Photoshop, I am not sure, but for me that takes away all the fun! I love trying to create effects like this in camera rather than doing it in post production

    • @NeilRedfern

      Hi Nigel, yes I was :) This was because I wanted to kill all the ambient in the room (so the only light sources were my two speedlights) but also because I wanted to shoot at f1.8 for the best foreground bokeh. Good question!
