- This is the first in a series of "Fix it" videos. Couldn't find any videos specifically about the Nissan Pulsar in Australia so I thought I would make my own.

Suggest getting the engine on TDC next time , you can then see the timing marks on the chain and the cam sprockets and you can line the them up with each other 👍

Yep, HG blowing is a VERY common problem on these engines , even more so on the series 2 “silver top” ,,, shit design by renault/ Nissan
Definitely done well there , my S2 pulsar needed the head to be welded and machined where it blew coolant into #3 cylinder ,,, there seemed to be some kind of “pitting” where it blew and didn’t seemed to be caused by the wrong coolant being used in the cooling system

It was a good practice, unfortunately 50k down the road it's pressuring the overflow tank again.
This time I'm going to get the head crack tested and machined. Hopefully I won't have to do it again 😅
How did you go, did you find the cause of the pressure?

Sorry mate, I just saw this. No I didn't use new bolts, no issues yet. 50000kms since.

Did you set top dead center ? Or it doesn’t matter since you marked it
Hey sorry for the delay mate, provided you mark the positions of the chain against the sprockets and keep the chain on the crank in the same spot it doesn't matter. Cheers

How many hours work does it take to replace the head gasket?
It took the 2 of us all day
So you just pull up the head and replace the gasket? no additional work on the head inner parts?
In this case it was not needed as the only problem was leaking coolant into the cylinders
Not we checked the head for straightness and the valves looked good. I've done 10000kms since and its running great

What was the major symptom of blown head gasket?
The old head gasket appeared to split into 2 layers. I was getting too much pressure in the radiator and losing coolant
Greg thanks for your clear Aussie example. My daughter's 2000 model pulsar blows massive smoke after about 6 or 7km, when it gets fully hot. I'm assuming it's the head gasket so I'll use your video. One question though, how were you suspending the head - was that a rope to a bolt or hook on the garage roof? Did the head loosen easily? If not how did you loosen it? AND, what happened with the socket piece down in the sump - is it still there? Also - that universal joint attached to the drill is a beauty - haven't seen one of them before, where did you get yours? Cheers Tom
Hi Tom, thanks for you kind words, your issue could be valve guide seals also but best ask a mechanic. Bunnings sell the right angle driver bit, they are around $60-$80.
I just used timber blocks to hold up the head, I was able to position them so they don't get in the way of fitting the gasket. I recommend you check out the American video that inspired me, Look for a head gasket repair on a Nissan Sentra
@@gregsshed7732 Hi again Greg, yes you were right in your advice - I was certain that it was a cracked head or blown head gasket - but it was only the PCV valve!! What a great outcome eh!
Oil rings on the pistons are most likely worn out

Hi mate, I'm not sure as I haven't needed to do that yet. Btw I'm just an interested enthusiast not actually a mechanic. Best of luck though
@@gregsshed7732 Thanks for the response ,looks like the engine has to shift to make room to get the booster out, beyond my ability guess I have no choice but to take it to the mechanic.
