Scotty, surprised that you failed to mention that a blown head gasket is usually a result of an over heated engine. Aluminum engine heads are notorious for warping under these conditions. I've replaced my head gasket twice on a '86 4WD Toyota 22RE & in both cases the head was so warped I seriously doubt a bottle of Steel Seal would have worked. However, your right, replacing it is a lot of work & can be expensive if you have a mechanic do it so it might be a viable option with qualification. Just read some of this thread, $100 a bottle ain't cheap. My last head gasket job, my cost, my labor, cost me $400, which included a complete gasket set (head, intake, exhaust, etc.) mill work on the head which included replacing a couple of valves & new head bolts.

I watch lots of videos on car repair. Some people are natural born teachers or just have the gift. Scotty Kilmer has the gift. I always look at the length of the video...Scotty says more in just over three minutes than most tipsters say in over 20. Congratulations Mr. Kilmer...I have bookmarked this page and will subscribe to your site....thanks for sharing your knowlege with the rest of us.
Mr kilmer i have honda city 2005 idsi engine 1300. When i bought i came to know that fan is direct and thermostat valve removed . Therefore car reduces 100 ro 200 ml coolant after abt 50km . Mechanic told me that cars head gasket might have damaged. But car is not showing symptoms like mixing of oil in radiator or mixing of coolant in oil chamber. Also car is not heating up on Ac and also starts well ,sounds good.. what should i do . Mechanic says that that removed thermostats valve is suspicious. Plz guide me what should i do . Mechanic says that headgasket changed in my car is not successful therfore we have to replace a complete 2nd hand engine assembly.
Yes, gets right to the point. Don't talk about the time they was picking up the kids from school and how they noticed something was wrong. Sat down at dinner had a talk with the wife if they should go to a shop or do it themselves. I be watching like, "get to the damn point."
I have a 2007 2.5 altima with a blown head gasket. I've watched 20 or 30 repair videos. None of the said remove the spark plug to find the leak. Then he said do the process without the plug in so it can repair that specific one.👍. Best one I've seen.
I remember mechanics telling me to never use head gasket sealer. If you follow the directions perfectly it works over half the time...permanently. All depends on how large the damaged hole is.
So many idiots complaining about the sealer. Didn't he say this is a try if you don't have the money to replace gasket. Some people have cars not worth the value of replacing but can't afford a new one. This is by far worth a shot instead of being without a car. Some people are just ignoramus. To all you "mechanics" who are complaining to Scotty are you going to fix customers cars for free or the cost of the sealer for a new head gasket. If not then stfu! I can't stand people like that.
Hi Scotty many thanks for your videos - very easy to follow, when i took my thermostat out it seemed to work better and the engine sounded better after running at idle for 20mins, (just waiting for it to cool down) there was a slimy clear gunk around the thermostat- can this cause head gaskets to fail also?
I really like this guy and know he knows his stuff. I say this as a mechanic myself. However, in a funny thought, I wonder if his neighbors are ever bothered by the streaks left in the road or the burnouts he does. 🤣 Overall, he seems like a great guy who cares about truly helping his customers the best way possible although I am strongly opposed to using head gasket sealer myself (again I’m a mechanic myself). I also don’t recommend it to friends who ask about it because I’ve seen how it clogs other parts in the cooling system such as heater cores. With that said, it can save a ton of money and get you out of a bind. I do not try to oppose him or go against his recommendations. This is just my personal opinion but I also admittedly have no experience with the brand sealer he used here. Keep up the great work and honesty Scotty! God bless you sir!!
I can just imagine the neighbours being awoken on Sunday at 7am: "Gerry, what's all that noise out there?" "Oh, it's just Scotty yelling into the camera again and idling the engine for half an hour with a spark plug removed..."
I sealed a Ford 6-cyl engine once with sealer, I was very sceptical. It worked and lasted about 3-4 years until I traded that car in. Obviously it's a crap-shoot, but worth a try compared to an engine gasket replacement or rebuild sometimes, particularly on a cheaper car.
@@israelrojas5807 on the Ford I used Seal-Tite by Dynagrip or equivalent. If a head gasket leak is too severe or heads badly warped almost nothing works and it's mechanical repair time

Dear Scotty, Thank you for your video on fixing coolant leaks! I have always been a doubter when it comes to "mechanics-in-a-can", but I was wrong. I tried your method and Steel Seal and it work! I am so amazed and appreciative for your generous help. Go Airborne! Ronnie Braun
Hi merde, looks like no body reply your very important question,it's really very bad to keep engine running with 3 cylinders, that vibration will help to misuse hundrunds of small parts Wich Scotty can't see And this reduce a lot the age of the engine and every thing related to the engine especially he saying keep repeating this many time and every time 30 mints, sorry as an engineer I can tell you this is wrong
...some people don't have that kind of money. And yes that's my case. But sometimes the car is not worth repairing either like in my case too. Back in February 2019 I had problems with a 96 ford explorer. I put K-Seal on the radiator and started to run good again. Six moths later still running. If I had to throw it away I would have. But still running so I keep driving it. Nice.
Wow, Scotty was ahead of the game when it came to recording videos. I would never guess that this was recorded in 2010. Props to you Scotty. If you see this Scotty, what do you think about the newer VW Jetta's? (like 2017-2021) I'm contemplating buying one and I'm not sure if I should seal the deal. Please let me know what you think!
scotty question about when to put the thermostat back after the test drive or before? thanks as always for a great video and helping my old cars continue to run because of your excellent advice. do you have any motorcycle videos i could use some advice with my 2007 yamaha vmax that wont run when i close the choke.
Scotty.. I bought an older car and I was pretty sure they had put this sealant in it... I did a radiator flush and actually left it in too long and now it seems to have taken out the seal bc its blowing the radiator hose off pretty quick... I would like to keep it going for a long time should I go ahead and put the sealer in if id like to fix the problem. Soon as I can or should I just wait until I can do the big job.... I like to do things myself and my husband can borrow a hoist from his work or whatever tools I need. I've commented before on one of ur videos it's my 2003 pt cruiser... Well bottom line did the radiator flush having been left in too long in real the original gasket sealer? You think ? And if it did could the hole be too big to fix with sealer ... Ugh sorry I wrote a book here rambling....
I have a 2001 eclipse gt (v6 3.0) I went to change the crankshaft sensor because that was the code that was reading. I changed it and as I put on the timing belt back on I turned the car on to make sure it was on correctly. The car started but the tensioner was not put on tight enough and the timing belt jumped and now I can't get the car to turn on. I did some research and think the valves bent and was think I should just get the heads rebuild which would cost about $100 then just install it.
Yeah, what you likely have is an "interference" engine. Their timing belt has to be exact and done in a certain way. I've seen it done on TH-cam and I was still not confident enough to tackle it. I took it to a Mechanic and $500 later I had a new perfectly working timing belt. I knew it was going, cause I could hear if flapping under the plastic cover and hitting it. Partially ripped, was my thought. Researched it and found out it was an interference engine. If the timing is off, like your belt mishap, the cylinder heads smash into the valves and bend them, yup. Cars with timing chains and non interference engines, don't have this issue and just stop dead if it's not right. No damage done. If the chain breaks or jumps if overevved (owned a Sunfire someone had done this to, jumped the chain and they were well known to do that if overevved) then it's a simple timing chain replacement at $120 (plus labour) and you might have to drop the engine a bit to access that bottom sprocket. Timing belts on interference engines are more touchy indeed! Screw it up and it's a costly repair. Interference engines are "supposed" to be more efficient, but touchier if they snap while driving, or if someone has the unfortunate mishap you had. Sorry about your luck. That sucks man.
Hey Scot just wanted to let you k ow for the past 2 years you've been my go to guide on ato repair and ever single time what you've said has worked lol much love brother
I used blue devil pour n go in my 99 B3000 yesterday. After watching some negative reviews where the stuff crystallized and clogged up everything... i want this stuff out of my vehicle!.... days later... blue devil didnt work. Replacing head gaskets now. What a job!
"This kind of stuff needs to be yelled from the rooftops" haha that would make a funny addition, one of the clips he's at the car yelling at you, then he's on top of a roof yelling at the top of his lungs, then clips back to the car again
I can't find the head gasket or coolant in my 69 vw bug nowhere, but in my Cadillac DeVille I'm pretty sure I have a Head gasket because is blown, and no sealer will fix that, isn't it?
Dbgrasshopper33 - They probably work well, but "my guy (lol)" recommended K&W HG sealer, said he used the BlueDevil without much success, stopped using it. You can find both BlueDevil and K&W at Pepboys. Just an FYI...
Doug styles - Before trying any "stop leak" formula I always advise. Checking the head bolts torque. In most cars is relatively easy and quick to remove the valve cover. So that's the best place to start, in conjunction with the stop leak I was able to "save" a lot of engines from a costly rebuild.
+Doug styles - Sometimes it's the best solution... :-) Personally I never ruled out cars or bikes for that matter, based on brand alone. Since I passed the wrench and the engineering side of the industry one thing I learned is that ALL mechanical/electronic stuff will eventually have problems. Sometimes it's a design fault, sometimes it's just a production batch. Quite honestly doesn't matter which brand we talk about. By far the best thing to do it's to solve a problem before it comes up in the first place...Preventive maintenance sounds awkward but it's MUCH cheaper than solving a huge headache later on. Be well. ;-)
I removed spark plug and disengaged the cylinder and did what Scotty said in my 02 forester and I cooked my upstream 02 sensor and my entire catylitic converter letting it run on 3 cylinders. I was so pissed
@@matthewtvrdovsky7386 come on down to the dealership we’ll fix that right up.... hey its lookin like youll need all pads and rotors.... what do you mean your power steering worked when you brought it here?
Blue Devil is the best if used properly as directed including removing thermostat and removing spark plugs afterwards and letting vehicle sit overnight!
Damn Scott'y, I wish I had been watching your shows 4 years ago, some of your ideas are simply brilliant! So simple and clear minded but things you don't think of. I would have a lot less problems in the past. But I know now! I will watch all the time from now on, and simply THANKS!
Hello Scotty, I had only one spark plug with coolant on it (cylinder 5) and one that looked like burnt oil (cylinder 8). Both coolant & oil were on the threads of the plugs. I did a compression test and the one with coolant (cylinder 5) was the highest at 220psi and there were three others that were low at 130-145psi (cylinder 4, 6, & 7) all others were all at 180psi. My question is should I only leave the spark plug with the coolant on it (cylinder 5) when applying steel seal or should I also leave out the three with low compression also?
I'm sure that you have already figured out your problem by now. But for anyone else: do not remove your spark plug *AT ALL*. The sealer requires intense heat from the firing cylinder to actually work. Without this heat the sealer will not actully do anything.
+Tanner S Apex seals are no where near the same as a head gasket. If you are going to compare an apex seal to anything, it would be a piston ring. "ta da" lol
5 weeks ago the mechanic said my 98 Subaru (165k mi ) had a leaking head gasket , was losing antifreeze , overheating .. would cost 1,800 to fix .. I liked the car it ran so well for me I had bought 70,000 mi tires for it .... I thought for 2 -3 days maybe I should sell it low or to junk yard for scrap and get another car ...... UNTIL .. I remembered seeing this video 2 years ago , and as I had success on 2 previous car problems by following Scotty Kilmer's video advice / instructions ...... I searched , found the Steel Seal co ... paid the price by card , he had asked about the problem over the phone and sent me the heavy duty 2 part sealer .... I had the mech do it using the instruction sheet , they tempered the repair , heating then cooling the engine several times .......got my car back the next day under $ 300 spent .......... been running good ever since , no overheating etc ... the repair is permanent , I'm happy ......... it's good to 'know' SCOTTY KILMER ... THANKS
Update 6 months later ... it held for almost 5 months .... since it only takes half the amount they send , I had the mechanic use the other half of steel seal in it , the mechanic was less enthused the 2nd time and it continued leaking after his work , so I started looking for another car ..... over 2 - 3 weeks of easy driving the leak slowed to almost nothing ! ... so now it is fine again ! ...... just not sure how long it will hold or maybe this 2nd time was the permanent cure ? ........... but again Thanks to Scotty Kilmer for 7 months ( and counting ) of extra driving and all his videos

@@ryanwatterson4038 few years and then I sold it and got a newer model still worked fine used to drive it alot it was a 89 model with a 3 y engine
@@gungor1985 awesome, thanks for replying friend, I suspect my head gasket might be slightly broken :)
All the best
You dont know what sealer brand put ?
I used k seal twice has worked for me lifesaver.
SCOTTY NO!!!! You forget to put (or tell everyone watching) the thermostat back on!!!!!
Lol some people will actually go along doing just that. Hopefully they see this
Ya, this requires that one small re-edit big letter captioning [REMEMBER TO PUT THE THERMOSTAT BACK ON !]
Well, he didn’t put the gasket from the thermostat onto the housing, either.
They will figure it out when they have no heat!
As well as plugging the fuel injector back in.
Exactly, there are NO ummm umm ummms, and he gets right to the point. He knows time is valuable and attention spans are short!
Well said
Yes, gets right to the point.
Thank you for your help
I remember mechanics telling me to never use head gasket sealer. If you follow the directions perfectly it works over half the time...permanently. All depends on how large the damaged hole is.
Probably they want you to pay em to fix the head gasket :P
Scotty is one of my top five! He is great. I have been following his advice for well over 5 years.
Options solutions and Blessings to the drivers passengers and babies on board
So many idiots complaining about the sealer. Didn't he say this is a try if you don't have the money to replace gasket. Some people have cars not worth the value of replacing but can't afford a new one. This is by far worth a shot instead of being without a car. Some people are just ignoramus. To all you "mechanics" who are complaining to Scotty are you going to fix customers cars for free or the cost of the sealer for a new head gasket. If not then stfu! I can't stand people like that.
Yeet
I’m just a broke girl with a leaking head gasket I’m
Gunna try this
Hi Scotty many thanks for your videos - very easy to follow, when i took my thermostat out it seemed to work better and the engine sounded better after running at idle for 20mins, (just waiting for it to cool down) there was a slimy clear gunk around the thermostat- can this cause head gaskets to fail also?
Like the man said this is a good fix if you don't have much money......
No, he probably fixes their cars 😂
I can just imagine the neighbours being awoken on Sunday at 7am:
"Gerry, what's all that noise out there?"
"Oh, it's just Scotty yelling into the camera again and idling the engine for half an hour with a spark plug removed..."
LOL. That just made me laugh after having a down moment.
Angela your profile pic is really pretty. u're man is one lucky guy to have someone like u, you look like a really sweet girl
I laughed way too hard at this
Never forget to ring that bell!!!
😂
Thx Scotty I trust you!! And your videos are Fun!!
When you poured the steel seal did you also top it off with coolant as well or just the steel seal
no just water
I sealed a Ford 6-cyl engine once with sealer, I was very sceptical. It worked and lasted about 3-4 years until I traded that car in. Obviously it's a crap-shoot, but worth a try compared to an engine gasket replacement or rebuild sometimes, particularly on a cheaper car.
Yeah same here, it lasted a few years till I made a long trip and it ruined both my head's lol
Hi guys dont remember the brand what use?
@@israelrojas5807 on the Ford I used Seal-Tite by Dynagrip or equivalent. If a head gasket leak is too severe or heads badly warped almost nothing works and it's mechanical repair time
GENIUS move, removing plugs one at a time…just brilliant!
LOL. Are you being sarcastic?
Every time I have a vehicle problem I watch many videos trying to find the solution to my problem. Out of all the mechanics who make videos Scotty is by far my favorite. Everyone else is so boring compared to him.

Thank you Scotty Kilmer. I very learned a lot from you. You’re an honest mechanic. You’re helping millions of TH-camr.
Good job
Dear Scotty,
Thank you for your video on fixing coolant leaks! I have always been a doubter when it comes to "mechanics-in-a-can", but I was wrong. I tried your method and Steel Seal and it work! I am so amazed and appreciative for your generous help. Go Airborne!

How long did it last
Hi Scotty, love your helpful videos. I do have one question: isn't it bad for your engine if you let it run for half an hour on only three cylinders?
Hi merde, looks like no body reply your very important question,it's really very bad to keep engine running with 3 cylinders, that vibration will help to misuse hundrunds of small parts Wich Scotty can't see And this reduce a lot the age of the engine and every thing related to the engine especially he saying keep repeating this many time and every time 30 mints, sorry as an engineer I can tell you this is wrong
@@nasrogames28 thank you!!
...some people don't have that kind of money. Nice.
The car sounded like it was starting a beat of the fresh prince of bel air
ha, 30 minutes like that too

Wow, Scotty was ahead of the game when it came to recording videos. I would never guess that this was recorded in 2010. Props to you Scotty. If you see this Scotty, what do you think about the newer VW Jetta's? (like 2017-2021) I'm contemplating buying one and I'm not sure if I should seal the deal. Please let me know what you think!

I have a 2017 Jetta…this car is amazing. No issues so far and Iv racked on 107k miles so far. I say you go for it
Good luck if you need any work done on it! You'll need big bucks!!!!
what a cool old man
Scotty....did you put the Thermostat back in the Car ---Later or NO ???
jjsiegal1 yes, about a week later when I was sure the sealer had worked
+Scotty Kilmer Did you also flush out the coolant to get the excess sealer out so it doesn't gunk up the cooling system?

scotty question about when to put the thermostat back after the test drive or before? thanks as always for a great video and helping my old cars continue to run because of your excellent advice. do you have any motorcycle videos i could use some advice with my 2007 yamaha vmax that wont run when i close the choke.
after the test
Thank you!
woud this work on diesel as well?
nissan xtrail 2.2 YD22
I have a 2001 eclipse gt (v6 3.0) I went to change the crankshaft sensor because that was the code that was reading. I changed it and as I put on the timing belt back on I turned the car on to make sure it was on correctly. The car started but the tensioner was not put on tight enough and the timing belt jumped and now I can't get the car to turn on. I did some research and think the valves bent and was think I should just get the heads rebuild which would cost about $100 then just install it.
If you bent valves and even if you didn't, its going to cost more than $100 to fix.
Exactly...the motor is EFFED
This is great news for all northstar engines
Someone promote this man... I like his style!
What a job!
why are you yelling at me
Taylor Gable 😂
Taylor Gable Haha Haha I know right he is throwing his arm around to lol
so he can open your ear plugs let you listen to him clearly then charge you for big bucks! He yelling at you so he will not explain to you twice!
This kind of stuff needs to be yelled from the rooftops
"This kind of stuff needs to be yelled from the rooftops"
haha that would make a funny addition, one of the clips he's at the car yelling at you, then he's on top of a roof yelling at the top of his lungs, then clips back to the car again
This is why I love my air-cooled motorcycles.
No coolant to leak.
I can't find the head gasket or coolant in my 69 vw bug nowhere, but in my Cadillac DeVille I'm pretty sure I have a Head gasket because is blown, and no sealer will fix that, isn't it?
still could possibly happen though
Can this be done without removing the spark plugs?
The way that this guy talks and wave his hand pointing like that makes the video more enjoyable to watch :D
+Jethrospect_ no he just looks like a spastic to be honest
Liquid glass works the best..aka sodium silicate. Also blue devil works great.
Dbgrasshopper33 - They probably work well, but "my guy (lol)" recommended K&W HG sealer, said he used the BlueDevil without much success, stopped using it. You can find both BlueDevil and K&W at Pepboys. Just an FYI...
Blue Devil sucks. Spent $75 today, followed step by step, and my explorer still kicks out so much smoke. Doesnt over heat though. But still undrivable.
Doug styles - Before trying any "stop leak" formula I always advise. Checking the head bolts torque. In most cars is relatively easy and quick to remove the valve cover. So that's the best place to start, in conjunction with the stop leak I was able to "save" a lot of engines from a costly rebuild.
crpth1 ...Ended up selling it a week after that post. THANK GOD. First and last ford. And yes they were aware of the cracked block.
+Doug styles - Sometimes it's the best solution... :-)
Personally I never ruled out cars or bikes for that matter, based on brand alone. Be well. ;-)
I love this guy
Thanks man! Was half way taking my engine apart when I realized I didn't really know what I was doing 😅🤣🤣😂

This Scotty Kilmer, even after 10 yrs there is no physical changes.... 😂😂
My question is should I only leave the spark plug with the coolant on it (cylinder 5) when applying steel seal or should I also leave out the three with low compression also?
its been 5 years, hes not answering you ever time to give up on all of your hopes and dreams
I'm sure that you have already figured out your problem by now. But for anyone else: do not remove your spark plug *AT ALL*.
The sealer requires intense heat from the firing cylinder to actually work. Without this heat the sealer will not actully do anything.
Thank you.. you're a very honest man..keep up the good work.
You’re the best Scotty and have helped a lot on a few repairs!
you talk funny but your very clear and concise scotty

that continuous finger pointing is very annoying
gonna suck for rotary owners

+Tanner S Apex seals are no where near the same as a head gasket. If you are going to compare an apex seal to anything, it would be a piston ring.

THANKS
Short answer ..... Worked for me ....... thanks Scotty
yes, sealers can work, just don't expect miracles if the head gaskets are really blown big time, only replacing them will work
Update 6 months later ... it held for almost 5 months .... since it only takes half the amount they send , I had the mechanic use the other half of steel seal in it , the mechanic was less enthused the 2nd time and it continued leaking after his work , so I started looking for another car ..... over 2 - 3 weeks of easy driving the leak slowed to almost nothing ! ... so now it is fine again ! ...... just not sure how long it will hold or maybe this 2nd time was the permanent cure ? ........... but again Thanks to Scotty Kilmer for 7 months ( and counting ) of extra driving and all his videos
Lol I have to laugh the way he throws the beauty cover as he calls it
Love Scotty’s enthusiasm and dedication. Also seeing the Airborne sticker on his cycle is ALWAYS a big plus!!
