/ Who is Tiffany Byrd Harrison? 🙋🏾‍♀️
Hey, I'm an actor turned video creator sharing comedy and conversation. On the channel, we talk media messaging and how to discern what we're being fed in movies, pop culture, and social media. Layered storytelling is my bag so I hope you get a chance to watch each video two or three times so you don't miss anything.
    /What is this video about?
In this video, I'm sharing my thoughts on the underrated Comedy-Drama movie Life (1999), which is described as a buddy comedy-drama that about two reluctant friends, Ray Gibson played by Eddie Murphy, and Claude Banks, played by Martin Lawrence, who are both wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Life is a movie that is full of heart, history, and wisdom for us now, and I made this movie review because I believe it deserves way more recognition than it received. If you're a fan of Eddie Murphy or 1990s comedy, then I highly recommend you checking it out on Netflix (Feb 2023)! OR if you thought the movie life was based on a true story, you should watch this, too 😉

The Upper Room scene is my favorite part of the movie. In that scene both Ray and Claude realize they didn't have that much time left and it was here that Claude finally called Ray his "friend" after disowning him in the past and claiming they were never friends multiple times. This to me was pretty heartfelt because even though Claude blames Ray for the circumstances that lead them to being incarcerated, he and Ray only ever had each other from the moment they were unjustly framed for murder and could only ever defend on one another for anything. And I think it was this moment that Claude decided that neither he nor Ray will die in prison. This was when he hatched his plan to escape and convinced Ray to go along with him even though Ray at this point had lost all hope of leaving the prison.

I've always wanted to produce a musical version of this movie. The pacing, the characters, the situations and scenes are absolutely PERFECT for a musical. Your mention of the boom boom room fantasy sequence is a great example. This movie is so special, thank you for your analysis💖

The scene that hits me the hardest is the one where Biscuit crosses the gun line after finding out he is about to be released for time served.
I've done time with other guys who were just crippled with anxiety about not being able to function in the real world. Not knowing what the rules are and the fear that goes with it.
Makes me tear up everytime. Big hitch sob gulps, amiga.
The movie truly does a service to this phenomenon by taking its time to really let the gravity of this moment land.

True. But one other quality that hits hard with Biscuit is that he made this choice regarding his own sexuality. And even before that the 1970s, No one supported Gay men and women, they could only find support with themselves and others, but never from the outside world.
      Especially so in America.

This (IMO) is Eddies greatest movie and most re-watchable, I have seen this movie way more times than COMING TO AMERICA, BEVERLY HILLS COP, TRADING PLACES...it's just that kind of movie. Eddie was back in rare form and that's what I think we loved about it and martin stood toe to toe with him. What is sad is...this movie bombed when it hit the theaters.

i just finished watching Life, and for the first time, i considered the harsh reality of Sheriff Pike.
Just thinking about the lives that he had ruined and destroyed in 40 years and had gotten away with it.
Then i think about the people in all of those old real-life lynching photos. .. the children who were there to gleefully witness the barbarity of their fathers and uncles and most likely lived long lives and wrought all kinds of hell on earth in secret.
It's disturbing to consider the possible fact that they'd grown up to be doctors, lawyers, judges and politicians.

The part in the film that always sticks with me, besides the very end when the credits role, is when Claude looks around at the world and then looks at the window of the car. LIFE is one of my all time FAVORITE Eddie Murphy movies. I wish Eddie would reteam with Martin again. No shade to Will. I love Martin with him as well. But, the dramatic elements between Eddie and Martin push their performances to another level and they're very ENGAGING! Life is ABSOLUTELY brilliant. The ensemble cast, the storyline, the drama, the comedy, Rick Baker's Oscar caliber makeup direction..... PERFECTION!!! This was the last movie I had seen during my high school senior year! Ah....the memories! 🤗 Rest in paradise, Clarence Williams III, Bernie Mac, R. Lee Ermey, Ted Demme, Heavy D and Rick James. 😔🙏🏾❤️🕊️

I missed this one it when it came out, my own life was in a bit of hopeless upheaval when it was released (my early involuntary release from the Service due to medical issues had derailed my life plans, mapped out when I was 17), and I never got around to watching, but you've convinced me I need to make the effort.
One thing that occurred to me when watching these clips, I would have assumed Eddie and Martin played the opposite roles; Eddie because he has that dynamic range, and Martin because his more manic comic persona seems to lend itself to playing a high energy con man (as opposed to a straight laced banker). So I look forward to seeing both performances.
And I have argued many times with people about Norbit. It's not only underrated, but criminally derided. I think I'm the only person I know who's watched it at least a dozen times. Ha
Another excellent deep dive, looking forward to more! #BoomBoomRoom

    • @TiffanyByrdHarrison
      @TiffanyByrdHarrison  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’m so sorry to hear about derailed life plans, Robert. I know how tough it is when you map out your dream only for it to change unexpectedly. I hope you’ve experienced some contentment in that area now!
That’s such a good point about them playing opposite roles - I do know that the “White Only Pies” scene was originally supposed to be the opposite way with Eddie/Ray wanting pies and Martin/Claude holding him back but it wasn’t working. They flipped lines for that scene and voila! one of the more memorable.
Can’t wait to hear what you think of it after watching.
Norbit may not be the most sensitive piece but darn it, it is funny. And Eddie is brilliant in all the roles.

@@TiffanyByrdHarrison Thanks so much for your kind words! As they say, everything happens for a reason, and I've long found solace in that, due to my early release from the Service, I was back home and able to hold my neice the day she was born, and that's an experience I'll always feel treasured to have.
That is an awesome bit of trivia about the pie scene... I can't wait to see it, especially with that in mind! Thank you so much for watching to the end, Charles! it means a lot to have fellow #Lifers really get the magic. Bokeem really gave that role so much without any words. You picked a GREAT cameo.

@TiffanyByrdHarrison No problem, Tiiff(may I call you Tiff? 🤣)! Bokeem really showed how talented of an actor he is by portraying "Can't Get Right"! He showed so much energy, emotion, and character without saying 1 word! He knocked this role out of the park(a little pun intended 🤣)! Once again, thank you for the awesome review, and I can't wait for the next one! #newlyloyalsubscriber

#BoomBoomRoom Love this movie and review. Will comment later, just want to list some movies I'd love for you to consider retro-reviewing:
Baby Boy, Ray, Do The Right Thing, Soldier's Story, Malcolm X, Inside Man, Devil In A Blue Dress, Mississippi Masala, Sparkle (1976), Claudine, In The Heat of the Night, To Sir With Love, The Defiant Ones, Killer of Sheep, Cooley High, Escape To Freedom (Courtney Vance, Tim Reid), Belly, Menace To Society, Purple Rain, Equalizer, Book of Eli, Deep Cover, Othello (Fishburne), What's Love GotTo Do With It?, The Informer (1968), Juice, Contagion, True Grit (2010), Big Lebowski, Sleepy Hollow, Karate Kid (both versions), Pursuit of Happyness, Fences, Lincoln, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Uptown Saturday Night, Let's Do It Again, and lastly, maybe even NORBIT (which I also liked, but I understand the backlash!)
I just kinda threw everything at the wall lol. I know some of these are either too old or obscure to garner views or may even conflict with your tastes and/or faith. But I love your channel, and you should consider teaching film/media at the college level if you don't already do so or haven't thought about it!!

I know I’m late but I want to bring some light to Mississippi cause I’m from the predominately black part (fortunately and unfortunately) . Camp 8 is a real place we call Parchman and ima say it still looks like that. Mississippi was/is most definitely racist but not like people think. Yes there have been fatal racist moments but that has happened in other places too. It definitely doesn’t happen where I’m from. I’m from Jackson Ms (where Deion sanders coached). And I said it was fortunate and unfortunate because of what came with just black folks being there. The --- people all used to live in Jackson way before I was born. By the time I got on earth, they all moved out, bought land and made their own cities , just to be away from us. Thats how racist it gets. 98% do not go to school, shop, or live in Jackson. Which means it’s not a lot of money and new things being built in the city. Which caused poverty for a lot of black folks. And it caused friction. But as messed as it is , it’s a beautiful place, culture wise. Some of the best food you would want are all at the good spots.

#BoomBoomRoom I had learned years ago that Life was directed and written by white men. This revelation had me wondering how white people could make a movie that so many black people hold in great regard even to this very day? Especially since their have been many other white creators who have made stories starring black people that were hated by black folks (looking at you Seth MacFarlane)
However, as I began to think and what your video confirmed for me is that the driving force behind this film was the actors. As with many of the classic and most remembered lines and scenes being adlibs or improv I truthfully consider life an actor driven film. The director did a great job but the cast really brought the film to life.

I saw this movie in the theater. It had funny parts, but for the most part left me feeling depressed. I mean they got their revenge, but they lost their life, for the most part to prison. As a black man in 2024 this could, and does, still happen. So I never loved it, barely liked it. I watched it one more time on tbs or tnt years later and still felt the same way about it.
