Jonathan Majors *perseverance* is actually...dangerous.
#JonathanMajors #PerseveranceAward #MeaganGood
When Jonathan Majors was first given his Perseverance award, I had A LOT of thoughts. But the biggest one is something that NO ONE is talking about when it comes to his rise, fall, and weirdly positioned comeback with the likes of Meagan Good and Coretta Scott King. So..let's talk about how dangerous this actually is.

Let's be honest with ourselves, black people. You can believe whatever you choose to believe, but religion is a regressive ideology. It never evolves over time and keeps us stuck in the past. Either the concept of God and religion has to change or black people must leave it behind. That's just my thoughts. I'm not religious obviously, but for all the religion my black people have, I don't see our communities thriving. In fact, they get progressively worst over time or we get displaced by gentrifiers. Like Tyler Perry's audience, if they don't evolve and ask for something different as far as storytelling, his art will continue to be mediocre and one-dimensional... somewhat the reflection of how people tend to view us and our communities, reactive. Just my piece. 💁🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

This is a man who can not take criticism. We just want him to diversify his stories. We keep using the excuse that he pays Black actors well and he keeps Black actors working to defend his work. If he isnt writing goid material for them, does it matter who he employs. He has so opportunity. Why are Black creatives not joining for production deals. Why isnt he making documentaries? Why does Netflix and Prime have better programming than what he puts out? Peacock has a heist film comimg next month with an All Star Cast, that looks amazing. Why is he not making movies like this???

Watched entire video. Great job! You really took me back…I took a “minorities in media” course back in college many years ago. It was taught by a professor from Africa. All the media he chose to show focused specifically on Blacks in Film. My eyes were opened to the topics you discussed. It was my first time watching Birth of a Nation, Native Son, Mandingo and learning about Oscar Michaeux. I also think now how my bestie (yep, still BFFs) has spent decades since college climbing the ladder, from PA and craft services to now having a fancy title on a network program. No matter her jobs, she was always writing new stuff, whether in New York or eventually LA. (I actually got to see a writer’s room on a real lot in action! Yes, I am the nerdy and goofy friend trying to be cool lol.) It is through her professional ascent that I learned a decent amount as an outsider about the industry. I still remember her first student film. It was fantastic! Thinking back on it, there was no trauma bonding, slavery, maids, etc. involved. It was an endearing and poignant film about family. Wow, your video made me think what I’d give to be able to see her short expanded and on the big screen. It was an accurate depiction of Blackness, yet universally relatable. I’m reminded of all the Black films she’d drag me to in college - a Robert Townsend superhero film and others. By the time Spike came along I was ready! After college, I remember a couple years later attending a film festival in which a new film she co- wrote and directed was showcased. I was just as proud then as I am now. Every crappy job (she has always held multiple jobs her entire career outside of film/TV demonstrated to me how committed she was to her craft. Whenever she reached a new level professionally I always sign my congratulations with “I always believed.” Thank you for bringing back precious memories and motivating me to be more supportive (as able) to all of my sisters and brothers committed to succeeding in this art form. Your video reminded me just from the little bit I’ve learned from her journey watching and listening with a compassionate ear, asking questions about representation behind the camera and being surprised and sometimes ruffled by the reality she was living. I came to see early on it is TRULY a labor of love. ❤️‍🩹 Thank you for sharing your insight. 🙏🏾

Watching around 41:31 and hearing that he doesn’t direct actors on his tv shows makes so much sense. Best example of that is the actress Danielle Deadwyler. I first saw her on Tyler Perry’s show “ The Have and Have nots” and I swear she was the worst actress I’ve ever seen on tv. I said she’ll never make it outside of this. Fast forward and I see the same actress on an episode of “ Atlanta” and wouldn’t you know, she could actually act. That’s when I realized even more he is the issue. She has a successful career now but the general audience really underestimate the role of a director.

37:32 😂 Even his comments that black women should date broke men read, "I have a chimp on my shoulder." As if, when he was living in his car as a struggling playwright, there was a woman he would have loved to marry, but wouldn't even breathe in his direction. And his entire empire was about proving her wrong.🤔

I also think that critics need to accept the fact that ppl have the right to push back on the critique if they want to. U can't just say that u have the right to your opinion and then dictate how others react to your opinion. If artists have to accept criticism, everyone including critics should accept criticism. Progression in art is absolutely NECESSARY and VITAL. But also progress may look different to one person than it does the other. Personally, I definitely think Tyler doesn't need to stop telling the stories he chooses to tell, but I think the execution needs improvement at a certain point. Writing your own songs isn't the same as writing a whole script. Because at the level that Tyler Perry is at, you are writing from a multitude of perspectives. Writing from a perspective that isn't your own, your automatically gonna end up with blindspots which is why he needs writers. If he's gonna keep doing black woman struggle movies, he needs black woman writers. Let Tyler write from the perspective of the male characters. Even if you aren't gonna get writers, at the very fucking least, Go out there find ppl to pay and interview who are going thru similar situations as those in your films so at least when u write, you've expanded your point of view. You stop progressing when you stop being a student. The real problem with Tyler Perry is he stopped being a student. And if you aren't a STUDENT, your STAGNANT. If this is what you love to do and want to continue to do, you need to spend the rest of your LIFE learning everything you need to learn about the things you love to do. That's not a debate. Period. If Oprah in 1998 had the same set, same logo, same clothes, and same hair from 1986, that wouldve been fucking TRAGIC. But she stayed on the air because she progressed. Even in the subject matter. I just think it's best to not give Tyler Perry any relevance or attention until he decides he's ready to take constructive criticism and grow. Because it's becoming more obvious that he's doing this because he knows the shit will get attention. In 2024, attention is the ultimate currency. Take that away from them, they'll do better. But also these videos are important. At least it's on his radar and in the back of his mind that ppl r making it clear that they see his stagnancy. And he has to figure out what he's gonna do about it.

Please take the time to learn about his case and understand everything that’s been going on!! This man has been through hell and I think it’s sad that Black folk are the first to come for him without truly understanding everything. For example, so what he said his ex should act like Coretta!! He said that because she was coming in the house drunk and bringing her drunk friends with her …per the transcripts!! She also said during the trial that he has never abused her. The only reason he was found guilty was because of her finger (which she probably injured trying to snatch his phone from him) and him putting her bk in the SUV. One more thing .. he had injuries from her as well (with pics) but no one talks about that!!!! We have to do better 💯💯

You don't need expertise to see a lack of character development, world building subtext or basic storytelling elements. "Highbrow" should be an insult to Perry's fans. He's literally saying his films aren't for smart people. And for those of us who see his "work" for what it is, there's something wrong with us because we actually expect BASIC STORYTELLING. Characters don't grow in his films. Events occur. Things happen. But there's no real story. And we're the problem?

One day I will make a live, but praise Jesus for replays! Good to see you Tiffany! I was hoping you would talk about Divorce in the Black, but then I faintly remember you saying you didn't want to talk about TP anymore, so I was glad to see that this live had aired. I had so much to respond to while watching but when I started typing, I felt overwhelmed by everything I wanted to say, lol! It saddens me though that it looks like in the black community, lack of quality and power of imagination is not expected, and it seems like the broader community is fine with that. I had been living in the US for a few years when a new friend I had just made in church said she wanted to take me to her business networking meeting to introduce my photography to them (you remind me of her physically, by the way). I was excited until as we were driving to the venue she says to me, "Your work is very amazing Swat but I am concerned that the people will see that you are black and instantly question the quality of what you have to offer." My heart dropped into my stomach. My confidence dropped to the ground. So, is this what I would have to deal with, being judged as low quality because I am black before they even see my work?! Black equates trash??? Did we cause this somehow? Then, a friend from secondary school (high school) was showing my work to her older sister and the sister asked, "is she married to a white man?" She assumed my photography looked the way it did because I was married to a white man.
