I GIVE UP on Tyler Perry 😡 A RANT | Mea Culpa Mini-Review (Not an analysis)

  • I really wish I could UNSEE Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa, but its finally confirmed why I give up on supporting his work. Even with a #1 spot on Netflix, the movie shows Perry’s refusal to grow in his craft, choosing to continue with tired stereotypes again and again. So imma repeat myself, too: Representation matters, but only if its quality. And if he won’t give us quality representation, its up to us to stop supporting his work.

Tiffany i dont know you and i dont know you depth of knowledge of black history but he isnt going to stop decimating the minds and psyche of black people because it directly benefits him as a billionaire to destroy black people who are poor in order to accrue more wealth for himself. This shit is obviously poison. Its like the pastor that will NEVER stop teaching you out of the same passages and never gets to the meat and potatoes of the bible, and im not talking about revelation.
I believe he wants to be the next Oprah, disgustingly rich and not necessarily famous. He has the language for the black women's story and struggle. The sooner you are understanding of that you can move on and get together with some black folk and start building some comp0unds or houses or whatever, stock up those supplies etc. The rent prices are going to keep going up, the groceries are going to keep going up, the climate will get worse and there will be another pandemic this election year and people will be displaced, art is being destroyed by ai and peoples faces are going to be used in media, regular people who didn't know they consented to it.
I say that because to destroy the psyche of men and women by destroying the imagination of people and replacing it with ai is to stifle their imagination for a better future. This is a concerted effort to destroy the black community through dumb ass debates over sex and sexuality discourse and fuckin respectability politics which he obviously props up, while they roll out these laws which restrict freedoms more and more as black folk are distracted with the SAME ARGUMENTS, and this hypothesis you have is correct but you seem like youre hopeful that he would be turned in his opinion to think differently if he had the range and i assure you they have the range. He is BEING PAID TO PURPOSELY DESTROY THE BLACK COMMUNITY FOR MONEY.

Coming To America for one and that was way back in 1988. Then we had a great period on the late nineties and early 2000s where we had so many great films with Black casts that werent about the struggle or about the hood. Films like Love Jones, The Best Man, Love & Basketball, The Brothers, Deliver us From Eva, Soul Food, Two Can Play That Game etc. All films that showed us as multidimensional human beings with jobs, love and relationship issues, friendship and families etc. For more recent examples over the past decade or so we had great films like Just Wright, Think Like A Man and Hidden Figures.

One of my absolute favorite movies is “imitation of life” which is a film from the 1950s. It tackles so many issues of race, gender, and ambition in a way that is thought-provoking and progressive, especially for its time. It’s a bit melodrama because it is the 50s, but it is one of my favorite films of all time.

TP was bragging about his _'work ethic,'_ posting ALL the scripts/shows that he wrote *himself.* He's proud to do everything himself and refuses to hire legit directors, writers, producers, & stylists. The result is that he impedes himself with the same, tired, errors: over-the-top caricatures, cringe dialogue, silly wigs/hairhats, and a 'lifetime-esque' vibe to ALL his projects. *He knows his audience: black folks who don't know any better.*

I thought I read somewhere Tyler P. complaining he has difficulty getting "A" list talent to star in projects. This movie is an example of why. Established actors take their work seriously and are very discerning as to what projects the align themselves. Those trying to build a body of work want QUALITY as well. I wish Tyler would just hire himself a team of writers and be executive producer. Then he could sit back, take notes and learn a few things.

The moment you brought up the FACT that TP has not invested in the next generation of filmmakers is when I hit the subscribe button LOL! Right on, right on, right on! He actually should be ten times bigger than what he is by way of paving the way for other filmmakers to make their films under his banner. OR - since he can turn out a new script in 48hrs he can hand it off to these young cats out here that can really turn his ideas into something more than what he's doing. It took me four sittings to get through the film. I thought it had some nice set dressing and a lot of good looking people. But that's about all the good I can say. For this to be an erotic 'thriller' it is short on thrills or any real tension of any kind. I never once felt that Trevante was under any pressure involving this bs case against him. I could go on. But the primary problem is that TP is the king of his own castle and nobody around him can check him on his creative decisions. And thus everything he does feels like a first draft because... it is. I actually though Acrimony was decently entertaining, but then he drove off a cliff with Fall From Grace. But even that had more merit than Mea Culpa (he thinks he's so clever with these titles lol). I think he should just stick to comedies and maybe straight dramas but stay away from thrillers. Because the genre requires a level of craft that he clearly isn't interested in cultivating.

As a black romance writer, I'm always aware of how I write black characters. We need representation in all creative areas, but we also need good representation. I went into this movie hoping it would be something new and different and my mind was working on where I thought the plot would go. There were so many plot holes and things that didn't make sense that I was embarrassed for this film. I loved Rhodes in Moonlight and Birdbox and these show what good writing can do for a good actor. And from a spiritual pov, how was anyone able to stomach watching this? It was ridiculous and over the top. He needs to be stopped. It’s disrespectful at this point. The “Christian” label seems to be just that, a label for TP. In the earlier days, I think there was intended to be something redemptive about it but now, it’s clear that doesn’t serve his agenda so he’s moved on from it. it’s very hedonistic.

Great video and completely agree with you how disappointing it is to see Tyler Perry refuse to evolve his filmmaking after all these years. I do think hes actually a negative to black entertainment at this point.
That being said, i am at least happy to see Kelly Rowland again. She was always my personal fav in Destiny's Child and last time i saw her was way back in 'Freddy vs Jason' in the early 00s.

This is why I stopped watching MTV and VH1 and others years ago. When cable started showing in every corner of the country, it caused young people in every corner of the country to completely change the next generation. Those that watched the filthy music and shows 24/7 began to raise kids. Now we see the outcome of that…..

Hi, new subscriber here! I just came from watching the live that you and Brittanny did together on her channel. You two have a great dynamic, and I can't wait to catch up on some of your videos. I gave up on Tyler Perry years ago; can't even remember the last movie I saw. I appreciate you commentary on what "entertainment" has become. There's nothing wrong with escape sometimes, but I think we as audiences should expect more from what we choose to consume.

This is a great conversation to have right now and I agree that something needs to be done. We keep talking black unity but again why isn’t he employing real writers, and like you mentioned why aren’t they all together trying to figure out how to build a network for us instead of leaning on others to make or distribute.

we GOTS to be more careful with who we support and if White Producers can get it for making stereotypes of Black people, than Black Producers can get it, too. We gotta keep the same energy all the way around.

Firstly, a huge congratulations on 4K!!!🥳🙌🏼Super excited & happy for you!!☺️👏🏼I totally agree, it’s so important what we watch & listen to; what we feed our soul with. (Philippians 4:8) I watched it last night & was shocked at some of the scenes. Realistically, I don’t see most women ‘getting with’ someone who just had someone else on them lol.👀🫣😣You nailed it with calling it trash.💯👊🏼But I did enjoy some aspects like the suspenseful discovery of the ‘other women’ portraits & the crazy ending. (And Mea’s wardrobe lol.) But honestly, I strongly don’t like TP- especially after hearing Monique’s recent interview. Keep up the stellar content!🤩😘

We definitely deserve more reviews like this one. Normalize necessary critique. In order for artists to grow they may need a weeding out. Tyler needs this, someone to hold him accountable while also appreciating his former contributions. It’s exhausting to see him scramble for plots by pulling from what is already existing. It’s exhausting to see him fail in his executions of those same plots.
Good on you for not being afraid to challenge black art. ❤

I totally agree. We need to change the narrative of movies for our children to show them positive people who look like them in movies. They see enough of this smut on the corner or live it in their life. They already have an opinion because these people are either in the family, on the corner, or in their circle

Speaking as an author, and old supporter of Tyler Perry's works, I can say that this film unsettled me for a few reasons. I gravitated, as we all have, toward Tyler for his depiction of the black community from the beginning. Some called it exploitation, while others found it enlightening and a form of representation. I honestly don't know where he went down a slippery slope. I actually love the fact that Tyler seems to portray a lot of professional black women- almost all of his female leads are professional in some way and I can appreciate that. I enjoyed Acrimony, Good Deeds, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Daddy's Little Girls, Why Did I Get Married and Temptation but Mea Culpa was SO left field. There was no real character development, no tension build up or story structure. I had no idea what was going on lol. It seemed like a bunch of ideas thrown together. The scenes were unnecessarily lewd and just...disturbing.

Well stated. What I have noticed with TP is that he puts out what he takes in. My gut tells me he has been in a dark place.
He has certainly brought joy and familiarity to fans over the years (myself including) but this feels like blacksploitation.
We have to mind our diet visually, mentally, physically and spiritually.

I inadvertently found your channel and you are doing a great work. I subscribed immediately! I remember about 2015 -2016 I saw snippets of Tyler’s movies and concluded it’s not for me or my household. As a father, my son was in high school at the time and I said there will be no watching of Tyler Perry movies in this house. And I explained using some of your reasons. Thank you. I’m glad I made that call back then. You explained it beautifully and succinctly. I didn’t want that “stuff” in my child’s psyche. It’s not uplifting or enlightening. I just wanna say thank you for this channel and keep up your great work here and content

I've been saying this to people. Your children can be influenced by these toxic dramas sometimes. How they respond in relationships and arguments can mimic what they see in these toxic shows. We need more Hallmark movie themed Black characters. What show would you want to be a character in?

that’s a great question, Missy! I’m not seeing a ton of opportunities in current shows, but I have ideas of stories I’d like to create and have on film that i’m actively working on! i love stories of people who no one expects to get out of their circumstances that do.

All who think T.Perry should change are wasting their time. I knew this man was up to no good after seeing diary of a mad black woman. Likewise, I’m not surprised that this is the route he has ultimately landed at creatively. You are right in that we as a community should not be patronizing him. Sadly that will never happen, because the community is largely broken. Indeed, T.Perry (and the likes) are a reflection of where we are both socially and emotionally. We have effectively turned L’s into wins.
