  • In this video, you will follow along as we troubleshoot a new issue that surfaced with the 120V electrical system in our nearly-new van: the Winnebago Solis Pocket 36A.
In the process of investigating the issue, we figure out (and share) what all the circuits in the van do, how the outlets are wired, we trigger an electrical panel alarm, and eventually get to the bottom of the problem. We also share several lessons learned about the challenge of getting warranty service locally and our experience working with Winnebago customer service directly.
We close with some advice for you if you are considering buying a van out of state/remotely.

Your patience and persistence really paid off. Kudos to you for the thorough troubleshooting. Also, kudos to Winnebago for sending that cable to you and not making you have a dealer confirm the problem, etc. You should follow up with them and thank them for the service - and ask if they want the defective cable back. If they outsource that part, it might be something they want to share with the manufacturer. If they make it, it might be a training/improvement opportunity.

Thanks for the follow-up and positive feedback. I will offer them a thank you as you suggest. Interestingly, the old/bad cable was made by a different company than the new one we got. Neither were Winnebago. So who knows, maybe they are already onto it!

I watched so many solice pocket videos on TH-cam and these are without a doubt the best hands-down, so informative and helpful. Keep up the great work.

You guys are amazing! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. Electrical is over my head but I still learned something. As I remember, the Solis Pocket Owners Base Camp Facebook group has an electrical schematic of the Pocket done by a group member that you might like for more detail. While there is a wealth of information in the Facebook groups, I learn so much more through real-world detailed videos like this that demonstrate your thought process. Winnebago also has a number of videos available, but nothing in the kind of detail that you provide or that I would consider helpful for much in-depth troubleshooting.

Thank you so much for the positive feedback! I was not aware of that Facebook group so I will check that out. Glad you learned something from our experience.

@@Outapkt Despite all of the information sources that are out there, you are bringing a fresh new perspective that I haven’t found anywhere else and you make the information so much more accessible by recording your experiences as you go. The fact that you are newer to the Pocket to me is a huge advantage and allows viewers the advantage of seeing how you come to your decisions in more detail and gives me a clearer idea of how to implement what I learn. You are also creating a wonderful video library for other Pocket owners to refer to in years to come.

Thank you for the methodical approach to troubleshooting. I learned a few things. We have A Solis 36A. It will be good to have this knowledge in my background understanding of the electrical system. There is one more outlet in the center of the dinette you didn’t test. Just FYI, in case you didn’t know you have an outlet there.

Hello! Great to meet another Pocket owner! Thank you for the feedback. You are absolutely right about that 4th outlet, in the cubby in the couch/dinette area. We honestly never saw it before and missed that completely. I just went to test what circuit it is on... and surprise! It is on circuit #2, same as the DC Converter. So now the label on that 15A circuit makes sense: "Recepts/Conv". So 15A circuit #1 = outlets under passenger seat and above fridge, 15A circuit #2 = dinette outlet and RV 12V converter/charger, and 15A circuit #3 (microwave) is the outlet in the back area. Circuit #4 is 20A and for the air conditioner (another thing we have not tested yet). Thanks so much for pointing that out!

Good job on the troubleshooting! I'm interested in the Pocket but have never owned an RV and this type of quality issue seems somewhat common in the industry. In fairness the bad cable was probably not made by Winnebago and was made by a vendor, but where's the QA and Customer support? Most people can't debug a power issue of this nature on their own. Thank you for some real world data on this awesome little van.

Thank you for your comments and for watching! Despite the issues we have found, we love the van.

A 900w space heater tripped the circuit when we were plugged into the AC outlet over the fridge. You said it doesn't have a reset, but it does. Multiple outlets on the same circuit only need one outlet with a GFI, so the the outlet that's around the corner by the water tank (which has a GFI module) had tripped. After I reset that, it and the fridge-side plug worked. Sounds like you have more problems than that, but I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for watching and for sharing your experiences. At the time we said that outlet didn't have a reset, we had not figured out how the various circuits were configured yet. Now we know of course that two outlets are on the same circuit and as you say each circuit only needs one GFCI outlet. However, in our case, it is the two front outlets (above fridge and under passenger seat) that are on one circuit, where it sounds like in your case, the one above the fridge and the one by the water tank are on the same circuit. So maybe our vans are configured differently? Ours is a 2023. In any case, thanks for the comment!
