I inherited my grandfathers colt SP1 made in 1976 or 77, it looks just like this with the triangle handgrip. Not my style at all but I’ll probably keep it the rest of my life because it was my grandfathers favorite firearm since 1985 when he bought it. He worked hard to keep it hidden all through the 90s during the ban. I have no clue how much it’s worth.

Around 2500-3000 on gun broker for the late 70s colt sp1. That being said I hope you keep it though. I bet your grandfather would be happy to know you kept it and are taking good care of it.

Have one for more than 20 years now. Bunch of colt 20 rd mags, Colt scope,bayonet and cleaning kit. Paid a grand back then. What's it worth now I wonder 🤔 Manufactured in 76.
Gonna go look at gunbroker out of curiosity.

Early AR15’s were full auto. The US military started testing them and using them in limited numbers in Vietnam.
M16 is the rifle’s official military designation after it was officially adopted my the military.
A semi auto variant was developed in 1963 for the commercial market: the “Colt AR-15 SP1” full production started in 1964.

Always fun to take an unaltered Sp1 out. The notch in the bolt was actually the first assist designed to be pushed forward with your thumb

Any rules on changing the upper on the Preban to maybe make it look modern? Or would that constitute to the 2016 ban from Healy

If it is a preban you can have most anything and do most anything. Yes you can change the upper. We have some at the shop

I have my Dad’s SP1 he bought new in 71-72! I was 12 I think when he got it. Shot it quite a bit back then. It’s still an awesome rifle and will pass down to the next generation.

I lived in Taunton MA Seekonk and currently Rehoboth. I'm guessing if anyone saw me at some point, they saw an AR15.I have an A2 Sporter 2 from 1984. It was the second version of the Sporter 2 which added the FA.
I wish I ordered in 82 cause I think that was the last time they had the SP1 on the market.

I purchased mine in 1983 from a Western Auto in Jesup, GA.. It came with two, five round magazines, I took out the stops!
