For me, Super Paper Mario on the Wii was a great game that I played many times when I was younger. I always loved defeating the bosses and unlocking the next area. It was a lot of fun and a unique experience.

It could’ve definitely replaced Super Mario Sunshine on this list (it was just lucky to even make it to the top 10 considering the fact that there are hundreds of Mario games, but even PBG himself sounds like this game would be an honourable mention at best). The GameCube version has a lot of good and bad qualities (it’s a lot of fun because it presents a lot of insanity in its visuals plus the Sand Bird music is the best soundtrack in this game, but there’s no denying it can be really frustrating in terms of its missions (re: the ones where you have to get the Blue Coins, Princess Peach not doing things for herself and other problems PBG himself mentioned) and the Switch version of this (and Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy via Super Mario 3D All-Stars) is… well… m.th-cam.com/video/U7ggERRZR3Y/w-d-xo.html Power to those that like this game, but I think the definitive version of SM64 will always be the N64 version (which topped the list, and while not my personal favourite Mario game (that would be Mario 3 or the Mario RPGs before Sticker Star or Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii).

Super Mario galaxy is my all time favorite. Epic music, awesome gameplay, new characters and just so much different types of levels. I just absolutely love it and just listening to the music brings back good memories.
Your'e not exactly nostalgia blind. A lot of these third party developers just don't give a shit about being ambitious with your work. Nowadays it's all about pumping out sequels and not caring if people complain as long as they keep purchasing the same game every year. Nintendo is different because they are still putting their blood, sweat, and tears into their games. The only reason why these third party developers don't want to make games on the WiiU is because it's not profitable because they have to dish out more money to work with innovation. I finally got the WiiU and despite some of the successes and failures of some of their games as of late, the WiiU is still a console that brings out that child-like splendor I had when I had a GameCube.
It's pretty much that to port a game from Xbox One to Ps4, you do some re-coding, and done. But if you wanna port it to Wii U, you have to figure out new controls and ways to play with the gameplay. Which takes more work, time and money. But whatever. At least *we* know where the fun is at. :D

And, spoilers ahead, All you get for the one-hundred Samurai challenge is Paper Mario TTYD character cards, and for the harder dark Pit of 100 trials, where every enemy is pitch black and their stats go through the roof, the game makes you do it TWICE to complete it. TWICE! It's really not worth it honestly.

eh. I like Sunshine more than 64. cause while the idea that you can take on any star in any order is cool. I like how sunshine had an actually believable world for you to go through. I mean, sorry, but the levels in 64 never looked like real places. They all looked like level design. I'd never believe somebody could actually live in most of those locations. While in sunshine, the places you went felt like real places. The people there were having a crisis, and you went and saved them, and they thanked you for it. It was cool to see Isle Delfino as an actual location. Not to say all Mario levels should be like this, or that levels that aren't are bad, I just really like that sunshine's levels were like that. It made going around completing challenges and beating bosses feel more rewarding.
Even though I like Mario 64 more than Sunshine, I will say that I think Sunshine aged better than 64. I'm sorry but I don't think 64 aged very well. Don't get me wrong, I still love the game, but I will admit that the game does have it's issues. The two biggest issue that I've found in 64 is that it one, it lacks directions. They don't give you that much hints on how to get some of the stars in the game. (Blast Away the Wall & Watch for Rolling Rocks being the most infamous for that.) the second is that the boss fights in 64 are absolutely pathetic, especially the Bowser fights. Those bosses are not even worthy to be called bosses. Hell even the bosses in Mario World put up a more challenge than the bosses in 64. Overall, I don't think 64 is a terrible game, hell I still play it to this day, but that's mostly because I grew up with the game & that I know everything about that game by heart. But playing it again, I realize that 64 really hasn't aged well. I wouldn't recommend 64 to newcomers. I think 64 is a type of game for long time fans only who grew up with the game.
What's wrong with the water pump? It lets you hover around for a moment, which increases the distance you can travel in air, and the accuracy with where you land. and the rocket and turbo nozzle helped bring a little more variety in how to get around. The FLUD gave the player more ways to explore the levels, so they could get creative with how they traversed it. I found it really fun. And what about 64 made you enjoy it more than sunshine?
LaMereACaniche That sounds like sarcasm. I didn't say mario should be realistic, I said I liked the fact that the world of Isle Delfino felt more genuine. The fact that Isle Delfino is the actual home of people that I'm saving, filled with tons of locals with things to say, and opinions, helped me engross myself in the world more. I'm not saying I want an uber-realistic mario game, but rather a mario game that's maybe a little more relatable. Even then though, I don't mind the other mario titles. I still have fun, I still enjoy myself. Sunshine's just my favorite cause I liked the environment best.
Am I the only one who disagrees with PBGs thoughts on Sunshine? I'd put it at second place after Super Mario 64. The controls are god fucking PERFECT. So very responsive. Feels amazing just traverisng the levels, not to mention it's the last 3D Mario game we got that had persistent levels and ground...how I miss it..

There was a Mario manga back in the day, it introduced something that was kinda controversial in that they gave Mario a sword. Yeah it was a mushroom gladius sword called the kinoko blade. I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing it in a game as a mechanic where it’s fueled by mushrooms or coins
Well, just played through Super Mario 3D World, and I gotta say I loved it. Almost all the levels felt unique and different from each other, the soundtrack is actually different and not that re-used crap from the NSMB series, and the cat suit is actually pretty cool ( I was one of the people that just scoffed at the idea ). It's not nearly as epic as Galaxy was, but it's pure platformer bliss.

Seriously , I've seen about a hundred other comparable scenes in other movies, as if the director figured no one would notice or care; two-player fighting games, but four people in the room have controllers; one player games like Zelda, but multiple people are trying to control at once; in one particularly distressing case I recall from some old show when I was a kid, the television character was playing a Mario game but, when we back up and look at the scene, the player is using a Sega Genesis controller.

I don't know why, but I always preferred the RPGs with a main hub world and objective than the others. It is why I liked M&L: Partners In Time, Paper Mario: TTYD and Super Paper Mario (I know it's not technically an RPG). For instance, M&L: Partners In Time's hub world was Peach's Castle and main objective was to collect the Cobalt Star Shards to stop the Shroobs - simple. Paper Mario: TTYD's hub world was Rogueport and main objective was to find the Crystal Stars to open the TYD - simple. And Super Paper Mario's hub world was Flipside and main objective was to find the Pure Hearts and close the Void.
All the others are good and all, but seem a bit all over the place. Superstar Saga doesn't count as there was no hub world and the Bean Star collecting was quite late into the game. Bowser's Inside Story also didn't count - although the hub world was inside Bowser, there was no hub world for Bowser. Also, the main objective has to go on for the entire game, but the Cure-hunting was only in the middle of the game. And Dream Team was the same - no hub world and the Ulti-bed thing was only in the middle. Basically, those 3 RPGs were all over the place, which is why I prefer the others (apart from BiS because that is my favourite RPG of all time) P.S If anyone is wondering about Sticker Star, we do not talk about that one.

Thousand Year Door is actually my very favorite Mario game, and I replayed it recently and loved it just as much as when I was a kid. Definitely worth picking up PBG. :)
I think all Mario games should be in the style of Sunshine or Mario 64: giant and awesome overworld, only a few worlds but they have 10 tasks each. And everything doesn't necessarily have to be done in order

It's a genuine Mario Game that follows a different formula. While it is an RPG at it's core, it adds the charm of a Mario game with some platforming as well. By definition I couldn't call it a spin-off, and regardless of whether or not the game could be called a spin-off is irrelevant in the long run as it is still a great game. All you get for the one-hundred Samurai challenge is Paper Mario TTYD character cards, and for the harder dark Pit of 100 trials, where every enemy is pitch black and their stats go through the roof, the game makes you do it TWICE to complete it. TWICE! It's really not worth it honestly.

eh. I like Sunshine more than 64. cause while the idea that you can take on any star in any order is cool. I like how sunshine had an actually believable world for you to go through. I mean, sorry, but the levels in 64 never looked like real places. They all looked like level design. I'd never believe somebody could actually live in most of those locations. While in sunshine, the places you went felt like real places. The people there were having a crisis, and you went and saved them, and they thanked you for it. It was cool to see Isle Delfino as an actual location. Not to say all Mario levels should be like this, or that levels that aren't are bad, I just really like that sunshine's levels were like that. It made going around completing challenges and beating bosses feel more rewarding.

Even though I like Mario 64 more than Sunshine, I will say that I think Sunshine aged better than 64. I'm sorry but I don't think 64 aged very well. Don't get me wrong, I still love the game, but I will admit that the game does have it's issues. The two biggest issue that I've found in 64 is that it one, it lacks directions. They don't give you that much hints on how to get some of the stars in the game. (Blast Away the Wall & Watch for Rolling Rocks being the most infamous for that.) the second is that the boss fights in 64 are absolutely pathetic, especially the Bowser fights. Those bosses are not even worthy to be called bosses. Hell even the bosses in Mario World put up a more challenge than the bosses in 64. Overall, I don't think 64 is a terrible game, hell I still play it to this day, but that's mostly because I grew up with the game & that I know everything about that game by heart. But playing it again, I realize that 64 really hasn't aged well. I wouldn't recommend 64 to newcomers. I think 64 is a type of game for long time fans only who grew up with the game.

What's wrong with the water pump? It lets you hover around for a moment, which increases the distance you can travel in air, and the accuracy with where you land. and the rocket and turbo nozzle helped bring a little more variety in how to get around. The FLUD gave the player more ways to explore the levels, so they could get creative with how they traversed it. I found it really fun. And what about 64 made you enjoy it more than sunshine?
LaMereACaniche That sounds like sarcasm. I didn't say mario should be realistic, I said I liked the fact that the world of Isle Delfino felt more genuine. The fact that Isle Delfino is the actual home of people that I'm saving, filled with tons of locals with things to say, and opinions, helped me engross myself in the world more. I'm not saying I want an uber-realistic mario game, but rather a mario game that's maybe a little more relatable. Even then though, I don't mind the other mario titles. I still have fun, I still enjoy myself. Sunshine's just my favorite cause I liked the environment best.

Am I the only one who disagrees with PBGs thoughts on Sunshine? I'd put it at second place after Super Mario 64. The controls are god fucking PERFECT. So very responsive. Feels amazing just traverisng the levels, not to mention it's the last 3D Mario game we got that had persistent levels and ground...how I miss it..

There was a Mario manga back in the day, it introduced something that was kinda controversial in that they gave Mario a sword. Yeah it was a mushroom gladius sword called the kinoko blade. I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing it in a game as a mechanic where it’s fueled by mushrooms or coins

Well, just played through Super Mario 3D World, and I gotta say I loved it. Almost all the levels felt unique and different from each other, the soundtrack is actually different and not that re-used crap from the NSMB series, and the cat suit is actually pretty cool ( I was one of the people that just scoffed at the idea ). It's not nearly as epic as Galaxy was, but it's pure platformer bliss.

3. Gah, okay, i admit it - I am 12, but that doesn't change anything. I just find SM64's controls to be very sloppy and hard to work with. Super Mario 64 DS's controls are a little better, at least for me. I really prefer any other classic mario game over SM64, except Super Mario bros 2 in the USA.

I don't know why, but I always preferred the RPGs with a main hub world and objective than the others. It is why I liked M&L: Partners In Time, Paper Mario: TTYD and Super Paper Mario (I know it's not technically an RPG). For instance, M&L: Partners In Time's hub world was Peach's Castle and main objective was to collect the Cobalt Star Shards to stop the Shroobs - simple. Paper Mario: TTYD's hub world was Rogueport and main objective was to find the Crystal Stars to open the TYD - simple. And Super Paper Mario's hub world was Flipside and main objective was to find the Pure Hearts and close the Void.
All the others are good and all, but seem a bit all over the place. Superstar Saga doesn't count as there was no hub world and the Bean Star collecting was quite late into the game. Bowser's Inside Story also didn't count - although the hub world was inside Bowser, there was no hub world for Bowser. Also, the main objective has to go on for the entire game, but the Cure-hunting was only in the middle of the game. And Dream Team was the same - no hub world and the Ulti-bed thing was only in the middle. Basically, those 3 RPGs were all over the place, which is why I prefer the others (apart from BiS because that is my favourite RPG of all time)
P.S If anyone is wondering about Sticker Star, we do not talk about that one.

***** ug to be honest I didn't like that one so much... classic side scroller type mario games are actually my least favorite of the mario series, with the exception to super mario world. The newer mario sidescroller/platformer games are much more lively and diverse in the game and not as much repetitive maneuvering like new super mario bros for the DS
