fun fact: mario party 8 actually WAS a gamecube game that they rushed onto the wii
UPDATE: its not actually CONFIRMED to be a gc game, but it was rumoured from some online review because of the gameplay aspect ratio, the low quality boarders (the title screen is the proper aspect ratio for some reason), the laggy frames with too many effects on screen, and the clunky motion controls.
That explains the low quality models and the 4:3 aspect ratio

I haven’t watched PBG in years, and I’m so happy that the old charm is still there. A lot of TH-camrs don’t stay so unique and wonderful like this.
In an era where almost every gaming "reviews" youtuber is full of cynical, bitter long ass analysis video essays, channel like PBG is pretty unique nowadays. I'm not saying those analysis videos are bad, i think it's nice to see a channel where they didn't take the gaming topic too seriously like PBG

I loved mario party 8 becuase I grew up on it and it was the first MP game I played, the maps were AMAZING imo but the real issue was that the game was rushed and was originally intended for the GameCube, you could realize this because the resolution of the game itself switched between 4:3 and 16:9 depending on screen was being loaded at the time and because of the stupid amount of motion controlled games that would be better on an analog stick
Yeah, I like Mario Party 8, too, and it's definitely likely a lot of it is influenced by nostalgia, but I stand by the maps being great.

@@scribblespower6590 I never realized it as a kid but I watched a 2019/2020 playthrough from the "Runaway guys" You should go check them out cuz they talk about this mainly in the first few and last few episodes but I mean I would recommend watching the whole things cuz it's great
The maps are great but I didn’t have that much fun with the mini games.
Mario Party DS is my favorite, but I feel like those who didn’t grow up with the game don’t even view it with the mindset that it’s possible to be the best. I do appreciate when it gets a portion of its due respect such as this.
It's one of my favorites too! Alongside 7, which was my introduction to the series. I also feel like you have to grow up with both to be able to really appreciate them and what they managed to accomplish for the series.

Also... Austin... Luigi's special die in Super is 1 1 1 5 6 7. It has a 50% chance of landing a 1. Looking at your footage of 1s, most of them were on the special Luigi die.
That probably only gives him another reason to dislike the game, I believe he said in some SMP playthrough, that he doesn't like how some characters are arbitrarily better than others
@@kryzethx yeah that is just unfair game design. Not everyone can pick the same character so some people are gonna be stuck with the character that plays worse which is bullshit

@@Jasonvoorhees57469 I’d argue it’s not really unfair. In a game like Mario party, where there are many different tiles with dipper that bonuses. Being able to get a 1 could be very advantageous
@@gentlemancharmander4411 true but it's not like dice like wario's or Bowsers where you can either farm a space you are on or move quite a bit and if you want to have an assurance of landing on a space, you are just as likely to have something good 4 spaces ahead and Shy Guy does that really well. Of course, allies will make characters that thrive on consistency really moot but they are generally too good to pass up
Mario Party 5 is my favorite. Surprisingly good "Story Mode", plus the appearance of the Star Spirits from Paper Mario was wonderful, and the tank fighting mode was very fun. I'm shocked it wasn't in the top 5 best.
I actually played MP5 before Paper Mario so when I started the game I was in for a nice surprise.
Don't forget the bonus games those are fun too.

Honestly, I will always have a soft spot for Mario Party 8. I remember playing it a lot as a kid in the late 2000s and having a ton of fun playing the game!
Oh and I can't forget about Mario Party DS since I grew up playing that game as a kid. Austin, I'm really glad that you put Mario Party DS on the list.

I appreciate hearing MP3 make it to Number 1. I always found that 2 was loved by EVERYONE, but 3 straight up did that formula better in every way, and I'm so thankful someone finally said it out loud xD

It's the best thanks to great pacing. The speed up options are a Godsend, especially when playing in 50Hz PAL Speed.

I actually really like 8. I just love the maps. Especally the train and hotel map. Minigames are okay. But the maps are just clicking for me.

8 was the last good Mario Party IMO. Plus my friend with only one arm could play it, so it's filled with nostalgic memories for me.
I loved MP8 as a kid, it has some of the best side mode stuff like the Bazaar, but the games are hit or miss. The boards however are great like the haunted mansion and monopoly-esque one
I think Mario Party 7 deserves an honorable mention. Each board was unique and had their own mechanics that changed your approach towards obtaining stars, and since the theme was of a vacation cruise you could also obtain souvenirs from each board. The minigames were also really fun and the majority of them were skill based instead of luck dependent (my personal favorites were Ghost in the Hall, Apes of Wrath, and Fun Run). Plus it had a mode that allowed for up to 8 players by sharing one side of the gamecube controllers, although when I played with friends and family we either setup cpu partners for 4 players or just controlled two characters at the same time for additional challenge. It also had mic minigames but thankfully it allowed you to change the settings so you could just use the controller and press R to select from the available commands, and despite some being somewhat finicky they were quite fun too. Personally I think it's worth a shot for anyone who hasn't played it, it's a pretty good game that I feel is often overlooked.
i used control F just to see if anyone mentioned mario party 7. Maybe im biased since i played it a lot as a kid but i definetly think it was a very solid entry if not one of the better games. And i agree with all of your points.
Mario DS slaps. Seeing the footage brings back so many memories.
Although I'm not the biggest fan of the anti piracy trend, I'm glad to see party ds getting attention again.

Mario Party DS is the one I've spent the most time playing, since I grew up with the DS. I love the game where you go down the stair railing, and the one where you swipe to get through the leaves.

I think mario party 8s mixed reaction is def from kids who grew up with it, personally i grew up with it and for the longest time it was up there in my favorites but its fallen as ive gotten older and looked at it more critically compared to 1-7, also it was 100% supposed to be a gamecube game, there are even mods for it that add gamecube controller support to it
As someone who grew up with and has almost exclusively played Mario Party 5 I was both disappointed not to see it on the Best list but relieved not to see it on the Worst

For real, honestly one of the most all-around solid mario parties out there
hot take here: While it doesn't get nearly enough attention, I think its overrated among people who actually talk about it. Yes the boards are great, the themes are great, the minigames are great. So what's the issue. The same one super has: the economy. You can buy multiple items in one turn and gold pipes cost ten, triple dice 7, and double dice 3. Not to mention the boards are a lil small making rolling 1-10 an upside and a down side. The hexes absolutely destroy balance as well. You can land on someone's hex they got randomly and lose TWO STARS or SWAP COINS, alternatively you can land on a star block space and gain up to THREE STARS. In addition, last 5 turns event can make stars cost 5 (have you ever wanted 50 stars, just go on the dk board and wait for that event)
It's basically just broken, fun broken (unlike Super) but broken nonetheless.

Like, you'd have to actually land on the specific space that they had been placed on, which you can't really plan out, you'd need like, a dozen hexes placed monopoly style in a row to get any decent value out of it, and if I recall correctly you could put a hex or block atop another hex to overwrite it if it's a bad one you're at risk of landing on
I also recall the star pipes costing 15 coins, not 10
I honestly LOVE Mario Party 9. Maybe part of the enjoyment is down to nostalgia but I love the board and minigames so much. I also don’t hate the car mechanic as much. It’s much better than Mario Party 10
I agree for the most part, but if you get a good group bowser mode in 10 is a blast.
While I hated the boards in 9 the Minigames were some of the best the series has to offer.

Honestly, seeing Island Tour instead of Advance at #1 is a welcome change of pace. I know Advance is not a good game, but it had some things to like, kind of. Knowing that there is something much much worse puts me at ease.
If I had a nickel for every time Peebs compared MP8 minigames to Smooth Moves, I’d have 3 nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened thrice, right?

@Nice Goat Doctor I understood the reference, but it's a poor reference because it doesn't apply to what you're saying. It's not weird for Peebs to compare MP8 to Smooth Moves several times because it's what his mind naturally goes to when thinking about MP8 as well as it being an apt comparison. So if Peebs metions MP8 several times on the channel (which isn't weird because he covers a lot of Nintendo content), then it would naturally follow that he would compare them several times.

It's been a minute since I played Super Mario Party, but I distinctly recall the game deciding that one of the AI should get 3-4 stars in a row a turn or two before the game ended. Just an insane combo of cheap items and ideal placement.

My family and I loved playing Mario Party DS when I was younger, I remember being afraid of the second boss (the rhythm one) for some stupid reason. Then tragedy stuck when we lost the cartridge…
I ended up getting a new one a couple of years ago and played though the full game. It was a nice nostalgia trip :)

Some characters in SMP have ten on their die, like bowser, the main gimmick of the game is the individual dice blocks which is its ONE good idea

The fact that you can speed up the board traversing and turn off CPU minigames makes it pretty much the only Mario Party game that's comfortable to play at 50Hz.
I actually remember playing a round of Super Mario Party where my younger brother stayed at the start for almost the whole game because he played as Boo and kept rolling negatives.
You have no idea how loud I cheered when I saw my childhood Mario become number 1. Also thank you for giving love to MPDS. It's such a good game and my sister and I played it so much.
Big MP8 defender here. It's partly nostalgia because 8 is the first I played and to this day the only one I've owned. But I also love a lot of the minigames and really, REALLY love the boards, especially Tycoon Town. Ballyhoo is a fantastic host too.
One thing I hate is how he said that one of the mini games was a rip off of another...
Cause we all know other Mario party games have all mini games that are 100 percent original

Using Wacky Watch for shortening turns is only for trolling purposes though, you will quickly restart the gane later anyway, hehe.
It's main use for me is extending turns, especially if you want to catch up.
Mario party 8 is just so nostalgic for me it was my first wii game and the boards are memorable. I can agree the minigames are too similar, but they still entertained me as a kid and even now!

@@tjwack9426 7 completely reworked the Duel Spaces for the worse, where the bonus is chosen *randomly* _after_ the minigame is played. The Bowser Events every 5 turns were a nice idea in theory but I never realized how annoying and slow they were until recently. Losing coins or stars without any control or interference is just infuriating, simply put. 7 is like a B-tier Hollywood sequel to 6: has a little bit of its own charm, but the original is definitely consistently better overall.

I really really loved Mario Party 8 when I was little, and I think the minigames were a part of that. Not that the game is the most fun to play now, but at the time, it was good that I could easily understand "okay this is one of the point and click games" or "this is one of the tilt the remote games". It made it easier for 6 year old me to play.
Totally valid that they're not great looking back on it though.
I think if the minigames were better in 8, it would’ve been so much better, because the boards and alt modes are some of my favourite in the series

@@jdasleigh1238 I remember that. Yeah it did still end up being "mandatory motion controls" but I remember enjoying it. I also enjoyed the final board with the special items that let you steal stars instead of coins.
I personally think 8 is over hated; even if it's not perfect, the motion controls are less unnecessary than is often claimed and it's definitely not the worst before 9. Also, I know it's already been mentioned, but I was definitely suspicious when a lot of the board's for 8 footage had the same three player and AI characters as TRG's, having watched that playlist again recently.

I don't know if it's just me being a Wii era kid, but I have no problems with Motion Controls at all.
Gotta agree with you on Super Mario Party, though my main reason for not liking it is its grand total of, uh. .....Four boards. When pretty much every other Mario Party tends to have five from the start with at least one unlockable, and each of the boards in Super feels incredibly tiny, it just gets stale fast.
And instead of adding DLC boards to fix this along with adding other options like star price, they just make another entirely separate, Fully Priced game. Very cool, Nintendo.
The boards are amazing in MP8. Minigames are a mixed bag. One of my top 3 in the entire series is in 8. Cardiators. Story is flows pretty well for mario party game.

Take Goomba's boots boardwalk, it is literally a long straight-line but the point is to get across it as fast as possible there are many to increase speed. Getting the end the star is free. Or in perplex express the locations of everything are being switched. There's still enough quality where the straight line understandable for the gimmick
@@peteypiranalover if you like straight line boards based on movement play island tour and I don’t consider your point in a line changing at random time as a good board and the bowser stage is just a copy of a Mario party 6 map
8 will always be my favorite because its combination of amazing boards, the deulo candy, and the crappy mini games have an uncanny ability to turn the most benign people into hardcore Mario party gamers that would slit your throat for a star. Plus it also means skilled players never have too big of an edge over unskilled players.
You know, as someone who likes 8, I can't really disagree with anything you said about it. The mini games are kinda bad. The boards are pretty cool, though, and I like that long mode where you fight Bowser at the end.

I still stand by 8 being one of my favorites, even if it's clear it was a Gamecube game ported to Wii last minute. I just love the theme park setting, and it has my favorite collection of boards.

MP8 is good. The minigames are mixed, but the boards are great.
There should be a mario party game where you can create your own boards or use all the maps from any of the mario parties and you can play all the minigames from all the mario parties and have one giant selection of games to play with all the characters and concepts from all of the games in one.
DS and Mario Party 5 are super underrated. Honestly, I never hear anybody talk about 5, negatively or positively. It had so much extra content beyond just the normal boards.

Mario Party DS is under-rated, although it’s been getting popular due to the awesome fake Anti-Piracy screens not many people have played it or know it.
I do agree that Island Tour is bad, but I did love the Bowser Board in that game since the whole point of that board is to NOT get to the end the fastest. The person who does has to hope they don’t land a 4 or higher otherwise they lose, and the person furthest away from Bowser at the end wins. It doesn’t do much to save Island Tour, but it was still a fun time.
Honestly, while I think Mario Party 8's minigames absolutely earn the harsh criticism, as others have said I really love the train and tycoon maps. They're two of my favourite maps in the whole series, and are really the only reason I ever play Mario Party 8. Also I'm very glad to see some more love for Mario Party DS & 3, those are my 2 favourites.

9 is literally my favorite, it's the one i played the most, i remember i would get crazy good scores on peak precision and i was scared of smash compactor, i did hate the motion controls, though, as i sucked at speeding bullets at least i was good at pit or platter, also the car mechanic should have returned for superstars as an extra mode

8 has some of the best boards by far. Tycoon town is one of the best boards in the whole series and perplex express is super fun
I had only remembered having Mario party 9 (which I like because nostalgia and the mini games weren't that bad) but then I saw the clips for MP8 and then I realized that I have had that game before. It was actually a really fun game and I remember that train board as well as some of the minigames.

8 isn't as good as 5,6,7,2,3 but its better than 1,9,10, Super and is on a similar level as 4. The boards are solid and more memorable than 4 and Koopa's Tycoon Town is a great board.
Super is great, I played it with my friends a lot and I really liked it

Definitely. I have no clue why Peebs put Super higher than 8, since he had more problems with Super and his only real issue with 8 was the minigame selection.

MP8 is one of my favourites, I enjoyed the waggle and I even made a video defending it.
But kudos on giving the underrated DS masterpiece some of the respect it deserves.
Mario Party 8 was a really fun game to play with my high school girlfriend who was always condescending about my enjoyment of video games because we could at least bond over how bad the mini games were.
I don't miss those times.

Yeah honestly Mario Party 3 had the best mechanics out of any Mario Party game to date but it went unrecognized for a very long time. I feel like only recently people are starting to realize that Mario Party 3 is in fact the best game in the series.

Since it wasn't mentioned, mp5 had some great strategy since you could create spaces with your capsules strategically. It could get pretty hardcore on a 50 turn game

we not gonna talk about 7? i'd say aside from not having the day night cycle 7 honestly feels like an improvement from 6 in every way. better maps, (the hollywood board especially), better minigames, and the addition of birdo and drybones as well.

Mario Party 7 is excellent, but I feel it falls short in three ways of Mario Party 6.
First: Random duels. Whoever thought the results of duels should be random is a monster
Second: Bowser Time: Get screwed every five turns for no reason. Bought a windmill for 50 coins? Be a shame if Bowser appeared and stomped it and took all your coins
Third: KOOPA KID IS NO LONGER PLAYABLE, 0/10, how dare they

I grew up with Mario Party 3! The minigames are amazing, the boards are interesting, it had interesting and fun duel boards, and it even had a sort of story mode and final boss oddly enough. I've never beaten it past the second board because of my short attention span, but I always have a good time with it regardless. I have fond memories of hooking my N64 up to the larger tv in the living room for me and my friend to play.
I've been away from PBG's content for too long. The last time I watched was a stream like 2 years ago where I said pretty much the same and asked about his favorite Arthur episode. Time to binge.
Also, Mario Party DS is so nostalgic. Used to play it with my brother all the time. It's definitely not the best, but it's such an underrated classic since it often gets lumped in with the crappy handheld games just because they're all handhelds.
Mario Part 3 also has the best story mode of the entire franchise, fight me
hell it even has a final boss and a main villain!
And it has probably given the best focus on Daisy, Waluigi and Bowser.
I like Super Mario Party. I know it has lots of flaws, but I still enjoy it. In the next game all I wanted was the same game with better boards, and it looks like that’s what Superstars is.

As someone that grew up with the Gamecube Mario parties, what makes it somewhat hard to go back to the N64 games is the terrible controls (even when using better, non-N64 controllers on an emulator). Like, Frigid Bridges from MP3? The slippery 8-direction controls on that one make it near impossible to play. Any games that require you to move around and punch people I suck at too.
That being said my favorite MPs are 6,7 and 3
I actually used to be super good at frigid bridges. I could get across without falling even once at my prime lol. The trick is you have to use the sliding momentum to your advantage. Frigid bridges was one of my favorite mini games. Also I used to hate ridiculous relay but now I think it made the game super fun.
Then again, 3 doesn't go overboard with pace breaking animations and button mashing minigames, so we're even.
Actually, the N64 games play worse on emulator than on native hardware, as the analogue doesn't match up. If you play Cast Aways natively versus on a modern controller you'll see what I mean. (Though the controls are still very slippery and still hard to go back through).
I’m in a similar boat, honestly. I grew up with 7 and 8, and then got 5 and 6 during high school. I played MP2 on Wii, and it was fun, but I always went back to the GCN games. It wasn’t until I got into emulation that I realized how much fun the boards in MP3 are, and I started viewing the mini games as harder challenges than what I was used to. If you can get a group of friends over, I’d definitely recommend playing MP3 with them so you can all struggle together lol. It’s fun to call bs at older games when you have friends gathered

4 will always be my favorite. Great minigames, varying boards, and fun catchy music. I like how the boards are in this game actually. Simple to read and they still have a nice fun theme to each area. I always get a little lost reading some maps in other games.
