Tony Scott is the B.B.King of the clarinet - not the John Coltrane or the Charlie Parker (of it).
Tony knows the Blues; he plays the Blues with El mejor gusto maravilloso - excellently!
As Tony toys so effectively with the clarinet, he demonstrates - with surrealistic creativity - the art of altissimo exuberance on the clarinet.
Never have I seen an artist's manhandling a clarinet with the beautiful bellicosity of, let's say, a Coltranian saxophonist!
I am now being unintentionally enticed to take up my clarinet once again - I WILL!

Be that as it may, Down Beat Magazine - from the 1930s to present - Jazzy Magazine, Impulse Magazine etc. not only cite similarities and dissimilarities of styles, tonal quality etc. among artists, but each year a quorum of their executives does invite musical enthusiasts, connoisseurs and critics alike to COMPARE and JUDGE performers in each instrumental and vocal categories - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.
Even though I personally have neglected to make a COMPARISON, be cogniscent of the fact that in every field of artistic, social, religious, political, and/or academic endeavor comparisons have been made, and are being made - and will continue to be made with varying degrees of merit.
I do however get and respect YOUR personal and individual "drift"!😠
For comparisons, I could and would have posited myriads of excellent clarinetists from the 1920s to present; don't you ?
His play of loud and smooth and silent notes are dope!

Stelios Twnhny Ikr, luckily my teacher was a jazz saxophonist so i got exposed to jazz early. I would have killed myself if i found out later. Having a still tone went straight out the window for jazz :'D

In a profile of Mr. Scott in The New York Times in 1967, John S. Wilson described him “playing his clarinet in his own uncompromisingly distinctive manner, a manner which encompasses both a feathery, light-as-air impressionism and an intense, emotional ferocity that makes the old-time ‘hot’ men sound as though they were blowing icicles.”

Ho conosciuto personalmente Tony Scott, che, anche se nato negli USA, è originario del mio paese, Salemi. L'ho sentito suonare in pubblico e fra amici intimi. Era una persona straordinaria.
I knew him too. I saw him play in Torino in 1972. His piano player was Mussolini's son..First met him in West New York, New Jersey in 1957. A wonderful person

era simpatico, esplosivo, raccontava un sacco di balle, viveva nel mito di Charlie Parker, era fissato con le donne, ma era difficile reggerlo per più di un'ora - lo conobbi quando avevo la tua età (30 anni fa). ah dimenticavo, era decisamente molto, ma molto intelligente. come clarinettista, be' era bravissimo ovviamente, ma non è assolutamente il mio preferito, ho sempre trovato che avesse qualcosa di leggermente affettato.
era italiano? si e no... uno non è "di" dove nasce, ma di dove cresce, per me era americanissimo, di origine italiana ovvio, ma americano, di cultura e formazione, parlava anche un italiano tutt'altro che impeccabile...

The best Charlie Parker CD i always cook to is 'Round Midnight by the Red Line Selection licensed by the Long Island Music Company. It is out of print but plenty of 2nd hand copies.He has a short-sleeve white shirt on playing horn on the cover. Sounds like he's doing his thing in a club at night when no-one's paying him full attention.

Bit over the tip for my liking but very clever but too showbiz
What a strange performance, he's worked up and sweaty, talks too fast and isn't composed, drummer messes up the ending, he goes on and talks about mistakes that most in the audience might not have noticed, given the strange applause. Then he goes on to talk about planes and laughing, "troubles, we all got troubles" putting negative emotion in the already confused audience. Man can this guy play the clarinet though.

Tony Scott is nothing compared to Buddy DeFranco. Tony is concerned with sound effects; really great jazzmen are interested in explore harmonies and construct solos.
Ricardo da Mata Rubbish. DeFranco plays a dozen notes a second. Scott plays MUSIC!

Are what the 'Blues'? Is it sad music that makes one moan? Is it happy music that makes one tap their toes? Can it be both at the same time? I say yes. Tony Scott has shown the anger and sadness in his music, while Buddy DeFranco has shown the happiness in his music.

Appreciate, cherish & celebrate the fact that we had such accomplished musicians, who could produce these magnificent sounds. No-one cares whose opinion is different from another. We all enjoy different genres of music. Accept it or go to some other forum, where petty point scoring is your life...

No need to be bending down and moving the clarinet all over the place. This is done merely as showbiz and nothing else. Hate the theatrics.
I beg to differ. Although the camera makes him look like he really is going up and down like a bunny rabbit. Still, most musicians do this, and it helps them convey the tone and emotion in their playing through accented notes and phrases and dynamics, all of which are ALSO expressed in their movement. Notice how when he throws himself around it's on beat, at the most intense part? Theatrics, possibly. But i'd bet money it's just his way of playing, that he created before he even made it to the big stage
@@morganfreeman544 Well said sir but then no surprise. Tony understood the clarinet and he understood the blues in a way akin to the way B.B. King did. Again theatrics, perhaps but then isn't that tied in with artistry. And then he really gets into his music. I wish he had recorded more on the clarinet before he moved into his Buddhist phase. Even his recorded chants have a 'bluesy' touch to them.
