Will it shock you that in Mecanics we calculate most things in 6D, sometimes in 12D and in rare ocations also in 18D?
6D because an object can have a position in (x,y,z) space plus its rotation around all three axis (φ,θ,σ) gives you a 6D description of the object in space. Now if if that object is moveing, it can have a different momentum around each axis, wich gives you another 6 dimensions on top and if you also look at the objects acceleration you get another 6. Have fun calculateing with 18D Vectors and Matrizes.

If you imagine a 2-dimensional egg as simply an oval with a smaller circle inside which represents the yolk, a 3-dimensional human being can simply reach into the 2d egg and grab the yolk, without breaking the eggshell. This would be unfathomable to a 2-dimensional being, who can't even see the 3d human grabbing the yolk, because there is an intact 2d eggshell blocking the action from being observed. Also, a 2d being probably can't even imagine a 3rd spatial dimension.
It'd be the same if a 4-dimensional creature removed the yolk of a 3-dimensional egg. We wouldn't even be able to see it happen. Just like the 2d creature from the previous paragraph, this action would be unfathomable to us 3d creatures, as we can't imagine a 4th spatial dimension.

The idea that time is "THE 4th dimension" is a common misconception. It is considered ONE dimension of our reality, but not necessarily "the 4th". Time is arguably the only other dimension we can observe next to the 3 spatial dimensions we know, so from that point of view, it is the 4th observable dimension to us. But like she's saying, there could be a 4th spatial dimension that we are unaware of, the same way a two-dimensional being would be unaware of beings in the third dimension.
One of my favorite quotes is "Whoever discovered water, it wasn't a fish". We identify water as it exists relative to everything else. Water is simply one thing of many on our world. But to a fish, water is merely the "space" they exist in. They don't know anything other than water to compare it to. They can't see outside of their pool to realize it is just one small component of a much larger picture. That is us in our universe - we can't look at it from any other perspective to see what it is relative to anything outside of itself, because we are IN it. We could be swimming in a big "space puddle" and not even know it.

Sure we can do math to learn about 4th or higher dimensions, but what do we gain from knowing about it? It’s ok to not understand the 4th spatial dimension because it doesn’t make sense like dividing by zero or taking the square root of a negative. But unlike dividing by zero or i, we can’t use higher spatial dimensions so imo they are kinda pointless.

@@herbderbler1585 Your doubts probably come from the fact that your definition of dimension and space is different from my own.
I will add that the common definitions of those words used in everyday life are very different from the ones used in maths and physics. And that the definition can also differ greatly depending on the specific use they have in a specific field.
For example, what most people think of as "space" is mainly what we learn in high school as Euclidian space, but there are all kind of types of spaces that have little to no semblance with it.
Or another example, in physics of quantum mechanics they use many "spaces", one of them is called Hilbert space and it usually has infinite dimensions. Is it a "real space"? Or is it just a tool? Who knows?
Or another example in the case of dimensions. There is the study of dimensions that are not "whole" (a very incorrect word for this subject, but it is illustrative). They are called fractal dimensions. What is a 2.34 dimension?
There are uncountable examples like that and many of them are based on reality (hat we can "see" of it) and are also used in its study.
That means that it is not unusual to have some doubts. That is why, for example, in maths there is so much effort put trying to define things that are apparently "simple and common".
The most important realization comes when one understand that dimensions and spaces are nothing more than tools and rulers that human uses to talk about reality, but they are not the reality itself.
The word flower is not a flower.
The map is not the territory.

Well, I guess you could argue that even if we could go both back and forth in time, it would still only be one dimension.
But to that end, I would say that we kind of maybe already do?
Time itself is probably easiest to define as the continuous expansion of the universe which happens at light speed. As you approach light speed, the passage of time slows down for you, and at light speed, the passage of time is unnoticeable; everything is still.
What if we were to move faster than light?
We would essentially be moving backward in time faster and faster proportional to the amount we surpass the speed of light by.
So what's there to say that the universe isn't expanding and contracting at the same time but just in different timelines, and singularities like black holes and big bangs are the points where those two diametrically opposed timelines can actually interact because time breaks down.
I don't know if I actually think this is true but I think it's a fun thought experiment.

so in this case, time would be a separate _type_ of dimension? like, the fourth dimension with more than one dimension of time would be written like 4s+2t dimensions, if we want to think more algebraically. s would be space and t would be time, in this theoretical scenario. s and t would have to always be no greater or less than one, and the variables are only included so we could see it like two different types of dimensions, but, yeah.
anywho, our experience, if written like this example, would be 3s+t. neat!
(keep in mind i am not an expert in physics or mathematics, so if this is horribly incorrect please forgive me💀💀)
((also i'm currently developing a story based around entirely theoretical situations in astronomy and physics and biology and pretty much every other field of science under the sun so this is indeed quite helpful in ensuring what i write is accurate! thanks a ton))

there are no 2 dimensional eggs, or 2 dimensional people; if there was a 4th dimension, the egg would be 4 dimensional also, we just can't see its 4D aspects. A 4D person would still be limited by the egg's 4D properties, if they could see and move in the 4th dimension any more than we can. I find this thought experiment useful to get people to grasp the topic, but like Schrödinger's cat, most people can't go beyond it, because it attracts the whole conversation and holds it there, stuck to its axioms, like angels stuck on the head of a pin.

    • @lawrencium2626

we're 3D people but we haven't found 2D world full of 2D things that we can play games with. That's because, regardless of the number of dimensions; this type of interaction probably doesn't exist. If there are more spatial dimensions, our matter probably already exists in them, just not in a way you can play with; these dimensions are theorised to explain how string theory could exist (strings will need [this math] in [these many] dimensions, to make [these types of properties in 3D], and if so, our "strings" will already loop in and out of them, as a physical necessity to make everything we see in 3D. Might be real, and yet not something we can 'move' through; the idea might be meaningless beyond grasping the concept of dimensions. If molecules can "exist" in higher dimensions, but can't move through them, can't send signals through them, besides all of them just using them for their strings to stretch in, then you can't have 4-dimensional "beings" that can play magic tricks on us, without that 4-dimensional chemistry.
We're 3D people that can't find flatland to play with. That's because it probably doesn't exist.

Everything is counting. With a ‘regular’ event one would count the events - a lower number is an earlier event than a higher number. It is natural to count days - which are given, regular events. Nomadic people count the number of Full Moons - to give us months and weeks. Agricultural people form a year in which Seasons recur at the same part of the year - to know when to plant etc.
However, in another way, the present is eternal or infinite; change is ever present, timeless.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but you know how gravitational force and the electric force drop off in strength with the inverse *square* of the distance 1/r² That's because the strength of the force is proportional to the surface area of a sphere... in three space-like dimensions. In a universe with only two dimensions of space, the force of gravity is 1/r and in four dimensional space, the force of gravity (and electric charge) drops off with the *cube* of the distance 1/r^3 (proportional to the surface volume of a hypersphere).
Also, there are no stable orbits possible in four dimensional space (with one dimension of time). All gravitational bodies will either spiral into each other and collide, or get ejected and escape, moving away from each other forever in a straight line. Stable circular and elliptical orbits (between two bodies) are not possible in 4D space.

Technically we could imagine time itself as being a 4th spatial dimension. Think about it this way: everything that happens in the past and future exists in a 4 dimensional object. When you cut open a 3 dimensional cross section of that object, you see what that object looks like at a specific moment in "time". The phenomena we experience as "the passage of time" would then be our minds mapping out every 3D cross section along this 4th axis in one direction. Because we don't have the ability to view this dimension directly, the passage of time would be our mind's way of dealing with a 4th dimension.
The problem is it can become next to impossible to describe the concept of time without relying on the concept of time to explain it. Like if I say time is only the way our brains interpret the existence of a 4th spatial dimension, then it gets hard to explain what I mean by the word "experience", because experience is a concept that requires one thing happening after the next, and as such requires time to make any sense.
So yeah, this idea is cool to think about, but really difficult to wrap your head around.

"....one dimension of time..." hold up. Try imagining a SECOND dimension of time. What would that be like?

The way I think of it, A first dimension al creature can move through width, 2nd dimensional can move through width and height, 3rd is width, height, and length, and 4th can move around width, height, length, and time.

An excellent explanation of 2nd 3rd and 4th dimensions is done in the book "Black Holes, Wormholes and Time Machines" by Jim Al-Khalili. One of the best teachers of quantum and the cosmos realms.
