Now take one line from the square and you can move along the length of the line (or axis to be more precise), but only the length of the line. You cannot move along the width nor the height, because both are 0. That's the 1st dimension. Then you add a second axis to the first line,forming a 90° angle between the 2 lines. Think of it as a shape if you will. A square.
The square has a length, height, and width.
Now take one line from the square and you can move along the length of the line (or axis to be more precise), but only the length of the line. You cannot move along the width nor the height, because both are 0. That's the 1st dimension. Then you add a second axis to the first line,forming a 90° angle between the 2 lines. You can now move sideways and forwards and backwards. Every point you move between these 2 lines (or inside of a square) can be measured by the lengths of these 2 lines. For example if you move 2 cms forward and 4 cm sideways, you get a coordinate of 2,4. Then you add another line again and boom. 3rd dimension. Hope this clears it up.

My favourite theory about dimensions beyond our own is that they interact with the 3rd just like we interact with the 2nd, so the 2nd dimension is a cutout of the 3rd, which means that the 3rd is a cutout of the 4th, so technically a 4th dimensional being could be watching us at all times and we wouldn't know.

There’s obviously unproven and untested parts, but classical physics also has untested parts and parts where it does not work. To a lay person dimension is some special concept.
