Probably the greatest guitarist of all time in terms of the sheer volume of epic riffs created. There’s 20-30 Metallica songs where you could just play a small sample of the riff only and people everywhere instantly recognize it’s Metallica. That’s hard to do, most bands maybe have a handful at most. Such a creative genius with music. Granted not the most technically gifted guitarist or whatever but that’s not what inspires an entire generation and kirk has managed to do that.
Absolutely! If you can rock the crowd and sound good, who cares about being super technical. He's not an iconic guitar player for technical prowess but because he simply sounds fantastic and creates awesome sounds from his fingers!
Indeed bro..no ordinary listener gives a shit about his sloppiness..its just us musicians who are so..whata the word...prepotentious and jealous...they cann all kiss kirks ass ..this guy is why i started playing and even tho i went trough shitloads of genres, fusions and shit but I always come back to metallica..

His humility is really incredible. When you think of how long he has been around, the worldwide fame of Metallica, and the universally recognizable (and amazing) solos/riffs/rhythms he created... In this day and age of the masses who are desperate to become known, it is refreshing to see Kirk consistently take part in interviews as just a regular, humble guy. Much respect.
Haha oh I see what you did there! You're saying he has more money than most of us and he can use that to purchase some talent points. No. The money argument is stupid. By your logic, Justin Beiber would be on top.
Jimmy Hank I mean he did, if you have a talent and you can´t make a penny out of that talent then even a three chrod guitar player that makes 20$ a week is doing way better than you, Plus Kirk did some of the greatest solos in Metal history witout even top guitar skills and that says a Lot
If you remember the film "Some kind of Monster" Mr Hammet declairs to withdraw totally from personal ego. Those days, he was and on, till now is consequent; as we see. He is his unusually modest, sensitive hard working person. And it looks like, he is right, and his attitude missing an ounce of aggression. Mr Hetfield, Mr Ulrich would not withdraw from the huge business called Metallica. Mr Hamett can really afford it with Mr Robert Turillo. That makes a difference, if anybody compares the personalities. Respect, Sir Hammet. Poland loves You!

One of the most humble men in metal, not to mention a phenomenal guitar player. I remember being 11 years old and hearing THAT One Solo for the first time and being blown away!
Kirk singlehandedly (no pun intended) inspired me to practice tremolo picking and therefore shredding. I'm the sloppiest shredder ever-- but I'm a bass player first and foremost, and that fast alternate picking technique has been carried over from guitar to bass. Really spiced up my bass playing. Thanks Kirk!
8:42 Just realized that we've all been playing Damage, Inc. wrong for the past 30 years. Every single tab out there has him sliding the entire 4th chord up a fret (and then later down a fret), but he's clearly just hitting the top note almost arpeggio style (then doing a single fret pull-off later). Mind blown.
Some here plays Metallica stuff better than Kirk himself? All right, but the difference is Kirk is the one, who plays it on stage. The one who was a part of founding those songs. Maybe million of people can play better than him, but many of those songs or solos wouldn't pop up in music if not him, and those people wouldn't be playing them. No matter how much better a copy is, it's still a copy. To me genuine but not perfect 100$ is better, rather then better looking, but forged one. Wow, Kirk Hammett is telling you guys about his musical experience and a bunch of you are criticising him for his musical ability... LOL
Jealousy will get you nowhere fast in life at all!
Jealous of Kirk Hammett, thats a good one. The only thing to be jealous of him is that he got a free ride to fame with Metallica. His best solos are the ones he stole from Mustaine and the ones that Joe Satriani helped him make lmao
Toomuchspaghetti Fade To Black? Disposable Heroes? Creeping Death? One? The Unforgiven? Ride the Lightning? Master Of Puppets?
He asked for "pointers" as in tell me what to do in Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets lmao as for the unforgiven he had a hard time coming up with anything good and the solo for One is good by Metallica standards which arent very high at all lol Let's not forget the solos he stole from Mustaine too
I respect your opinion but I don't agree with you
and are you as good as them, you can not say anything cuz you are just a 40 year old who missed his chance hahaha, give me a break, people like you will never get anywhere. That's why I do not see you on any records.
Say what you like, but his rhythm chops are pretty ferocious.
Brooklyn Volume you play in a band with Hetfield for 30+ years you're bound to have those rhythm chops.
I agree. In his Guitar Center video I was surprised by how good his rhythm guitar was.
Brooklyn Volume what are rythm chops ?
gamespecies basically how good you are at playing the riffs and keeping time
Brooklyn Volume People don’t understand how diffficult that can be when you’re playing in a live setting lol
He’s so humble but he’s inspired countless people. We love you Kirk
So weird seeing him with an acoustic.
Kirk is a legend. This guy wrote so many great riffs and solos. Legend.
That tone on Leper Messiah is flesh-ripping
Kyle Natoli what point in the video was that one?
what's the song at 3:38 called
David Nwokoye it’s the part of Lepper Messiah sort of right before the solo
Stephen Greico thank you. You're a beast. 👍👍👍
David Nwokoye you got it 🤟 it’s a great song
I'm 25 and I'm very happy that I live in a time where guys like kirk are still around and are still playing guitar like they always did. I think it's better to look at it like that rather than how most people say that they're not in their prime anymore.
What's up with this stupid trend on hating on Metallica's members? What the hell have you achieved?
Alexander Dinesen I graduated from ITT tech
Congrats dude
No, it's only Kirk and Lars that are hated. Everyone loves James and are ok with Rob.
Well... The reason is that is not cool to see such bad musicians getting millions for their music (mainly becose all the mistakes they made is becose the lack of work and practicing...) Sorry about my english, rookie
Great argument, bet it took you hours to come up with that one.
I just don't know how someone could ever hate this guy!
It's jealousy, not hate.
@@firstnamelastname8060 True😋
Hate him for what?!🤔🙄
@@marcuswilliams6840 Thats what I need to know😅 Cant find a good reason to it, yet he got many people hating.
only people in the guitar community criticize him
Probably the greatest guitarist of all time in terms of the sheer volume of epic riffs created.
Yeah, very few bands, in act apart from Metallica, I think only AC/DC has so many recognizable riffs and maybe Led Zeppelin to an extent.
Yeah because most of them were written by James
Indeed bro..no ordinary listener gives a shit about his sloppiness..its just us musicians who are so..whata the word...prepotentious and jealous...they cann all kiss kirks ass ..this guy is why i started playing and even tho i went trough shitloads of genres, fusions and shit but I always come back to metallica..
Satabdo Majumder disposable heroes, master of puppets, enter sandman, creeping death, damage inc, four horsemen, bleeding me, battery, trapped under ice, leper messiah, sanitarium, and justice for all, and many more each have riffs that Kirk wrote. Stop discrediting Kirk.
Kirk Hammett is the reason I'm a guitar player! This man is my hero! He gets a lot of unnecessary flack, and hate. He is in my personal opinion one of the greatest guitarists of all time and he is my favorite guitar player! Love ya Kirk!
Kirk Hammett is the reason I picked up a guitar as a kid and still play to this day. Definitely the most inspiring musician in my life.
Hands down most inspiring guitar player to me. Kirk and james got me to try out playing and now I'm addicted. With kirk as my favorite player of all time
He wrote songs like 'enter sandman' and 'master of puppets' (riff parts)...so underrated guitarist
No he didn't, James did
@@zoranhome big misconception
kirk wrote guitar riffs :)
You laugh at his guitar skills , he laughs at your bank balance
Haha oh I see what you did there! You're saying he has more money than most of us and he can use that to purchase some talent points.
No. The money argument is stupid. By your logic, Justin Beiber would be on top.
Kirk made his money himself with his band, Justin Bieber did not, he is a product, so your argument is invalid.
"he made his money himself"
"With his band"
Lololol
Jimmy Hank
I mean he did, if you have a talent and you can´t make a penny out of that talent then even a three chrod guitar player that makes 20$ a week is doing way better than you, Plus Kirk did some of the greatest solos in Metal history witout even top guitar skills and that says a Lot
Kirk wouldn't laugh at any bank account he's humble
he’s so modest and down to earth. amazing qualities in such an insanely talented musician.
He's one of my biggest idols as a musician and as a person. So humble. Much respect.
feel sorry for you guys who hate him... I love kirk for his level of playing and yet he influenced millions of guitarists all around the world including me...
Love you man!!
and seems like a real nice guy at that
Kirk and James are the reason why I'm so into music, and why I finally bought a piece of art - en electric PRS guitar just recently.
i've been listening to Metallica since MoP came out - Kick is getting old but then i look in the mirror and and remember that im not that young anymore either. Thank you for everything that you have brought to this world Kirk. Keep up the good work.
I've been into them since Kill 'Em All came out, and I feel the same.
Kick? Lol
Hands down Kirk is a amazing player and super humble , huge inspiration !!
Both Kirk Hammett and Dave Murray will remain my top inspirations for playing guitar, and I totally agree with Kirk when he said that playing the guitar is more then just playing it, I suffer with anxiety and depression and I seek to my guitar to get through a bad episode and I show it with my playing style and my end product.
Ryan Freebody yeah I started playing guitar when I was 18 and a year later I was getting panic attacks, luckily I was learnings tons of Metallica songs and kirk was a main influence. Rock on
I bursted laughing because I thought you meant Bill Murray
What a musical soul and young spirit, this is what music is all about !!!
Say hate all you want but Kirk Hammett is my favorite guitarist EVER!!
Edit April of 2022: He still is, along with James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, and Tony Iommi as my favorite guitarists
Good for you. His solos are so much more listenable than many by technically "better" players. I think he's got an excellent ear for an interesting melody.
@Dylan Gruenloh TF?
Jan Mark D. Gestuveo me too his solo hit me really hard, I also like the other players too but this guy was the first person who really got me into music
He's no Robert Fripp or Vernon Reid
I love this guy, he's is probably one of the nicest humans on the planet and is responsible for a huge part of my playinging style.
I doubt Kirk has personally changed a guitar string in 25 years... lucky bastard.
Dustin Platt it’s not hard to change guitar strings.. it’s really easy. Maybe your just bad at it
Literally takes 2 seconds
Dustin Platt not luck. Hard work and dedication
KEN5423 He is a great guitarist... He may mess up a little, but who cares, look back at old 80s and 90s videos he almost never messed up.
KEN5423 lol what about all the modern wannabe metal "guitarists" that can't even play solos
Man he sounds just like the guy from Metallica
Jake B he looks very similar too!
Funniest thing I've ever heard
@@Shanecam5 funny but true .....this days metallica become the best cover band of metallica...if you know what am saying.....but hey..... father time hits everyone in this life.....
This guitar diplodocus rockin' since 1979, has 42 years up on guitar, hasn't laughed so much since I ran my mother-in-law's foot over with my Rover Ride-On Lawnmower. Bwaaahahahaaa! What a scream Jake B, funny as bra!
sad but true
I have so much love for Kirk I've tried to play guitar so many times but I could never stay with it but I found Metallica and Kirk was instantly my God I love him so much thanks for being you Kirk even if you dont see this i still want you to know you'll always be one of the most inspirational guitarists ever
Kirk and James are the reason I started to play so this hits home for sure
Kirk Hammett is a major part of who I am as a musician today. I hope to be like him some day
One of the most humble men in metal, not to mention a phenomenal guitar player. I remember being 11 years old and hearing THAT One Solo for the first time and being blown away!
To me Kirk is like a God,every note of his solo hits me in the right spot, simply best of all times
he's pretty decent but if u think he's a "God" u must be 12
@@renegadesofpunk2567 Garbage Assessment
He created the solos I that made me go “wow” while I was growing up learning guitar, when almost nobody was doing it. That’s why he has my respect!
My personal fav guitar player...such a heavy dark sound from such a nice guy...his solos freaking shred too!!!!
He's in the BIGGEST rock band in the world, and has ZERO attitude. Much Love and respect to you, Kirk.
Thank you Ernie Ball for bringing us this clip. Kirk is incredible.
Mind blown.
Mongopotamus tbh ngl that’s always how I thought it was played
Yeah, just found out my cover is "wrong" too... it's fine, make noise!!
I noticed that also.
He also improvises a lot too though, especially in solo parts and parts of his riffs. He’s always done that
Man! I love watching Kirk play those songs with no other guitar or drums! So awesome to hear him play and practice like a normal guy!
Kirk is my favorite guitarist his sound and the songs he’s created are just amazing.
That Lepper Messiah riff tho
Some here plays Metallica stuff better than Kirk himself? All right, but the difference is Kirk is the one, who plays it on stage. The one who was a part of founding those songs. Maybe million of people can play better than him, but many of those songs or solos wouldn't pop up in music if not him, and those people wouldn't be playing them. No matter how much better a copy is, it's still a copy. To me genuine but not perfect 100$ is better, rather then better looking, but forged one. I feel like all those complains wrote a jealous people, who feels like they can better, but they didn't get successful. Do you like competition? Swap to piano and go for International Chopin Competition or buy a bike and go for Olympics ;)
The Truth shall set us free..
He's a sloppy shit, who doesn't seem to put a lot of effort into it these days, but I'm not gonna pretend he wasn't an absolute beast in his prime. He was great, and is a legend.
The difference is he's the one that wrote it. If someone is playing kirk better than album kirk, I'd like to see it and then i'd like to see their amazing rock band. 1 love.
@@gershonhopster EXACTLY. People that can play it better can read music. Kirk can WRITE music. Original, amazing music. Write something better than One, then you can brag. Or master of puppets, sandman and on and on...
Just like john lennon skill in piano. Much people were better piano player than him but no one is as legend as he is. You can have a good skill but if can't make a legendary song then shut up.
Kirk is the reason why I started playing guitar, this guy is so humble even if he's one of the most known guitar player on earth.
Idc what any of you say I’ve always loved Kirk’s skills. I hope to have half the talent as him when it’s all said and done.
One of the guitarists that made me start playing.
Kirk is one of my favorite guitar soloists, he plays with so much emotion and passion that you actually feel his guitar solos and riffs which is the awesome power of music and the journey it takes you on 🤯😳😵🤘
The reason why I started the greatest love story of my life: playing the guitar. Thank you, Kirk!!
Kirk’s the man. Always loved his playing, he seems like such a cool dude.
F*ck Yeah. Kirk Hammett is my idol and I need to meet him cause it would be a great motivation. I learn a lot when I see him playing with the guitar and damn and playing guitar is my life and I'd die for that. I wanna learn guitar from my guitar-god (Kirk Hammett)!

Thanks a lot Kirk to be part of my present, of my past and my future. I thank you a lot to inspire me playing guitar, to encourage me playing, to let me feel the passion that comes playing guitar. Always rock and roll my legend!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥
METALLICA CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER !!!! From day one i was mesmerized and astonished by them all , especially Cliff and Kirk !!!!
THANK YOU !!!!
A humble guy. The bit where he says he hopes that he inspires people to pick up the guitar. Millions of people, I would suggest.
Kirks solos allways protrayed another part of the story that is the song you were hearing and has allways been just as important as the lyrics and emphasized the overall feel of the song thanks Kirk .
Damage inc... one of the reasons I wanted to play faster and create more thrashing sounds. Kirk is a legend 🤘
He may not be the most technically proficient guitarist but surely millions of kids picked up the guitar because of him. Definitely one of the most influential.
Omg his voice is o chill im actually impressed
Cue the haters on a vid where he's clearly enjoying himself. He's obviously such a bad guitar player that he's influenced countless others and is extremely successful at his chosen career. Unlike the "mom's basement" expert guitar players who nobody gives a shit about :)
Preach. And you know if they ever met him they'd fall over talking about how great he is.
Exactly.
Amen to that brother!!
Mohsin Siddiqi
Basement players moms give a shit, and they want them out.
My influences have to be Kirk and Slash
Two of the best and most passionate players in hard rock/metal.
haha those are mine too
+Zorichai me 2!!!
Triple C Two of the most hated... Funny
Same here.
Anytime Kirk talks about music, you can always hear the sincerity in his voice! He loves it!
I got goosebumps when I heard him play some blues on the acoustic:).
Legendary Kirk admits that he is still learning and loves when others are inspired by him the same way he is inspired by other musicians. Super Humble! I love Metallica forever!!!!!
Kirk was the reason I got into guitar. He started it all for me. I can never hate on him. Do i wish he was this virtuoso, amazing,
Magical guitarist? Yes!. But, then Metallica would not be Metallica. Kirk's way of playing gives them the recognizable sound that is Metallica along with James' riffs
James Hetfield: Downpicking god
Kirk Hammett: Alternate picking god
He's a beast also in Downpicking
Paul Gilbert: alternate picking god*
@@agustinares930 Finally a man of culture
@@agustinares930 Martin Miller bro. Crazy stuff
Crazy how 4:09 is a 3 string sweeping technique but he picks it. Proof there’s no rules.
Well for me it's easier to pick fast than to sweep too, because I very rarely try to sweep pick, and that's because I don't like guitarists who do that too much. Probably he is the same way...
Although we can't say the same about him with the wah.
Is that from one of their songs? I'm just now discovering Metallica
