I feel like his name is symbolic. He’s just an average Joe. As the show goes on you see how the world views him. Average. Nothing more. But you know from the start how twisted and complex his character is.
And better yet, the actor who plays Joe (Penn Badgley) doesn't try to justify the action of his character and keep reminding the fans that Joe's a problematic character.
bijjeslikepeaches thats my thought. But then again I did have a neighbor across from me in my old apt complex that would change with her blinds open all the time.

She had lots of issues too, but she never realised he was a stalker during most of the time, so it's not like she was dismissing his stalking because he was hot. But he certainly had a creepy vibe and even forgetting the creep he was, his intense and 24/7 presence in her life trying to please was just too overbearing.
@@ComedyGlor Yea ik but for me that ain't normal. My Windows and blinds are always shut especially at night cuz YOU is a good example of what happens when your window is just exposed so. For some ppl that's normal but for me nope. That's the exact reason shit started happening to shawty, she was mad open with her nonsense. Yea he stalked her but she made shit so easy for him.
Abbyy Wabbyy that’s ridiculous. He still would’ve stalked her whether she made it easy for him or not. Yh she probably should’ve got blinds, but the fact that she didn’t neither encouraged her stalker, nor made him into a stalker in the first place. Nice try trying to victim blame though 🙄
Who DOESN’T have curtains on the windows on FRONT of their house, which is on a MAIN road, and then walks across their curtain-less windows IN A TOWEL letting literally everyone on the street see you😐
not having any curtains is definitely weird in her living situation but I honestly don't see what's wrong with walking around in a towel in front of a window. A bath towel literally covers more skin than the actual outfits some people wear in public and who's really gonna bother to close the curtains every single time they take a shower??
i can actually explain this!! ive read the original book the series is based on. Basically, a big part of beck’s character (explained by joe) is that shes an attention seeker. She LIKES the risk. she WANTS to be seen
Ally J that makes soooo much more sense. they should have explained that on Netflix. that scene literally pissed me offff. Like how tf u having sex with the with no curtains to cover. It was as if she wanted the world to know what she was doing, then act all surprised when she attracts a psycho. 😂
The thing I never understood was, HOW THE FUCK DID LONELY BOY GET A GIRLFRIEND after literally saying so much shit about her and the whole gossip girl page on just them!!! Maybe, lonely boy is just as creepy as he is in you and it's the same person with just different names
Shit like this makes me glad I'm average-looking, ace/aro and have no interest in doing the old *devil's tango...* Not that it would stop creeps from creeping, but at least I won't fall for them and validate their actions. 😬
I know!! Like he is literally a psychopath and people are just like "aw he's so cute". I will say though I love how the actor responds to comments like "I want a Joe" and he just goes "no. he's a psychopath and a stalker. he's not the good guy, stop."
@@petrarajewski5255 everyone who says they want joe deserve what's coming to them when a joe in real life gets attracted to them. They missed the entire point of the character (which is hard to do because getting the point of joe is literally the purpose of the show).
He was a bad guy but unlike every other bad guy he doesn’t know he’s one. He have pure intentions and does everything for the people he loves so in one way I kinda want him to get better but he definitely should get caught before he keeps killing people
I mean there are different definitions for him...thing is,he's mentally ill, from all the trauma he went through as a kid,he doesnt think he's being bad,he's just too desperate for any love that he becomes delusional.
Most bad characters know they're bad and they love being bad. Joe however has the purest intentions and doesn't realize. I think he's not bad, he just does bad things. In the end, his motives are to help the people he loves (Beck and Paco), he just goes about everything the wrong way
Melodi Marston Man where have you been living? You honest to God think Hitler thought he was evil when he was killing Jews? You think he was doing that to become a super villain? No, every single evil person I the hero of their own story. The Hitler comparison is extreme, but it was to make the point that even Hitler viewed himself as a hero. Very few people do things because they think it’s evil. The same way terrorists bomb places in the name of God. Joe is a bad person BECAUSE he does bad things. His intentions are irrelevant.
Im fairly certain that situations considered extremely creepy in real life is 30% of all romcoms. I once saw a movie called The Lucky One where Zac Efron played a soldier coming home back from war, searching for this one girl he found a picture of on his dead teammate during the war and he considered a lucky charm. He moves across from the girl and keeps on spying at her through the windows, which I found creepy but the movie portrays it like its supposed to be romantic.

@John John Uhh.. Joe is supposed to be the villain of the show, its not because he's the protagonist that he can't be a villain. And he's clearly written as a villain on purpose, you re blind If you can't see that

I dunno just random thoughts: 1. His name was chosen to be Joe, to show that what you might think is your average neighbour Joe, can be a psychopath maniac. 2. I think Peach's character just depicts that there are levels to the stalkers and creeps. Hers being less harmless but still invasive and creepy, and Joe's is the most extreme level of stalking, killing in sake of his obsession. 3. Paco character shows what things could have led to Joe becoming what he is, unstable (or lack) of family that drove him to seek a kind of parent/mentor figure in a person, who was crazy. 4. Beck is everything Joe thought he wants. He thought that his meticulous stalking and researching Beck would help to know everything about her. Yet he imagined HIS Beck. He imagined (or researched and came to conclusion) what her weaknesses, problems are. But in the end it shows that you can never know person 100%. Both Beck and Joe were taken aback by what their partner really was. He was a creep, killer and stalkers - things she wouldn't know or though of. She was a cheater - Joe's worst nightmare.
It's funny because I love the story behind Peach. She was literally Joe but in girl form and no one really talks about it. Yes Joe finds out she is Beck's stalker, but it would have been cool to know more about Peaches roots of obsession. Beck says in an episode they randomly met in a party bathroom drunk throwing up. I think peach set it up and had her eyes on beck just like Joe did. When Peach first met Joe she said "weird how you met beck once and suddenly you're saving her life at a train track. You were just there what a coincidence" she automatically had a red flag from him because she knows its a not so coincidental situation to stalkers. She has done to beck and maybe other people the same thing that Joe did. She met or "saw" beck, and the obsession started. She knows the second time she ran into beck in the bathroom, it was by her design. So Peach knows the only way Joe out of all people could have been there to save beck, was by his own design. She couldn't accuse him with what she knows without exposing herself.
Good point! I think that's why she spotted right away that Joe was a creep. Of course she felt jealous and all because she was obsessed by Beck and would do anything to trash talk him to Beck, but at the same time I think she spotted him and that's why she was always so suspicious of him. He's her male version.
I’m going to be one hundred percent honest with you... I thought that Peach and Joe would end up together since they’re both stalkers and well...IDK, kinda seems like something that would happen in a show like this...
The creepiest aspect to me was that they managed to make him somewhat relatable. Like, you know what he's doing is wrong and toxic but still you can feel with him , because you see everything from his perspective, even though it's really sick and twisted. After watching the last episode I was shocked about myself because I could actually sympathize with a serial killer.
Exactly, and I think that's what makes this so different from other shows, because the protagonist is essentially the antagonist but because it's written from his POV, the audience kind of sympathizes with him, even if what he's doing is so wrong.
@@Lena-zn4re You can't be the protagonist and the antagonist at the same time. The protagonist is simply the main character. The antagonist is simply the person who opposes the protagonist. @@hulietmoreno5851 Lol no. The protagonist cannot be both the main character and not the main character. I think you should go back to grade school English 😂😂

I don't know where else to vent this frustration: Beck's dad even called her Beck. No one's parent is going to call then by their last name they use as a nickname. That was stupid.
Idk I know alot of parents who would. They respect whatever their child wants to called. It's their identity and they want them to feel comfortable. Stupid? Yes. Unrealistic? No.
Crush: What kind of shows are you into? Me: I love You. I usually watch You before I go to bed and sometimes end up staying up all night, haha! Crush: Oh, is that on Netflix? Me: No, it's on my camera, but I am trying to put all the videos together. Crush: ...
That's the point. You see into the eyes of the stalker/killer, and they can justify absolutely everything they do, sometimes so well that you actually sympathize with THEM over their victims.
I think he’s a fun character. Obviously he’s a bad person, but if people are stupid to the point that they can’t tell the difference between enjoying a fictional character and a real human being, than I don’t know what to say.
I know a dude who gives me STRONG Joe Goldberg vibes (books, pretentious, vinyl, deep-voice, cynical about love, etc). I don’t know whether to be nice so he doesn’t kill me, or to ignore him so he doesn’t kill me Edit: To clarify- I don’t think this person is actually capable of Joe-level deeds, he just has a strikingly similar personality and aura to him. I haven’t talked to him in almost 2 years, the comment was made as a joke, I don’t feel I’m in any legitimate danger 😅
@@Louise-kl7ow I think he's toxic af, imagine your bf killing/threatening people he thinks aren't good for you. He would be super controlling and dangerous as well, stalkers never make good boyfriends, they are absolut creeps and nothing more
I love how Joe is such a terrible person, yet the show MAKES us like him. Not only do we get a 1st (and also 2nd) perspective on how Joe thinks, which makes us feel as if hes in the right for some of his actions, but also because the other characters he has to face are just....not good people?
It's this that actually makes it hard for me to decide whether I love or hate this show. I love how complexly it manipulates the viewer's emotions to the characters from a technical standpoint, but at the same time, I hate that it does this in the context of such a creepy psycho.
It’s called the tragic hero. He is a villain yet he makes the audience seem like he’s the victim. It’s like Shakespeares hamlet and how even though hamlet is slowly going crazy and killing people for revenge the audience sees him as the hero of the play because he’s the victim
It’s called the tragic hero. He is a villain yet he makes the audience seem like he’s the victim. It’s like Shakespeares hamlet and how even though hamlet is slowly going crazy and killing people for revenge the audience sees him as the hero of the play because he’s the victim
Honetstly that's my pet peeve when it comes to characters XD "Oh hey this character is a creepy murderous stalker, but hey this benji guy is a walking stereotype so our stalker isn't as bad eh?"
Does any one else really dislike Beck? She was super selfish and self centered, she didn’t tell joe that they weren’t exclusive (which I think is awful because any kind of partner you have need to be aware of the situation)
I honestly don't know. At some parts of the series I loved her, at some I hated her, and I always sympathized a lot with her because of how often she got hurt all while being stalked and manipulated by a psychopath who she thought was the person she could trust the most. So I just appreciate her as a character who isn't black and white, but very real and flawed.
It's a slow descent for me. At first I really liked her, but then she slowly built up her L meter and by the end I was not a fan of her at all. It would probably have been a different story if they did monologue scenes like Joe but they didn't so...
I didn’t like her but I felt really bad when she died. She’s a very realistic character and her life was messy but Joe didn’t have the right to do what he did
In other words, remember the Danny Devito rule: "Replace the protagonist in any romance with Devito. If the movie turns from romance to horror, the romance just sucks."
white guy of narnia It can be both things. Romance is the force driving the plot. The satire hides in Joe’s narrative musings and the implicit social commentary the show makes. So I’d say both genre descriptors are fitting.
white guy of narnia Oh sure, they’re often used to display how conceited, arrogant, contemptuous, narcissistic or deluded he is. That’s the design behind them. But sometimes, in my mind, they’re also used to satirise both his behaviour and social biases; when Joe’s forced to hide behind the shower curtain of Beck’s bathtub because she nearly catches him spying in her flat, he says “I’m not gonna get caught. I’ve seen enough movies to know things like that don’t happen to guys like me” (comments like that fall under satirical meta-commentary); when he’s commenting in his mind on something her friends said he thinks “Sometimes I think I’m the only feminist you know”, which frames him as the classic, unself-aware Nice Guy TM; when he spots Peach spying on Beck taking a bath, while he’s doing the same thing, he muses “Look at her! She’s invading your privacy! That’s disgusting”,which is the writers’ way of satirising his hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness. There are probably plenty more examples, but I haven’t seen the show in a year, and my memory sucks.

@@cutielol0 maybe in the show but not in the books. Dan was never intended to be Gossip Girl and if you go back there are tons of reasons why he couldn't be, mainly because of plot
I have the worst memory when it comes to faces. There have been instances when people have approached me because they recognise me and I have no idea who they are.
Creative Dreamer yeah but the difference is that although we’re supposed to sympathise with Joe it’s very clear from the beginning (or at least from the end of episode one) that he is a creep and genuinely a bad guy. In twilight Edward is presented as a (read: THE ULTIMATE) good guy.
Have you read Lolita? The villain narrates the story, and it almost makes you think that the events portrayed there are romantic or cute, when they are not, same thing here, You is obviously not nearly as good as Lolita, but the way it’s written, makes you simpatice with the bad guy, even though they don’t hide the fact that he is the bad guy, in Twilight, the vampire is an abusive stalker, but even the writer thinks that he is a nice guy, the Prince Charming.
So what’s interesting to me is I initially thought they were gonna pull a Dexter and make him be able to kinda be this super charming guy to everyone on the outside world and be able to hide his sociopathic tendencies really well but I noticed there were several times where he would just exhibit little weird behaviors that if you weren’t being observant enough you might miss or not think anything of them. One in particular that I remember is the episode where they’re buying her a new bed and literally tries to go down on her in the middle of the furniture store lmao. Beck understandably is shocked/weirded out that he’d try to do that in public but later forgives him when he apologizes. That right there to me was a huuuuuge indicator that this dude has a skewed sense of normalcy... like I think if I were the girl he was pursuing I would quickly notice the red flags and cut things off, no matter how much of a nice guy he tried to be to make up for it. Beck just really wasn’t that smart of a person to notice his little off behaviors, she never really looked that deep beyond the surface with anything or anyone. I’m glad they wrote her character like that though because it shows that she’s just a random flawed person who isn’t even that great of a person to begin with. It makes you wonder why Joe chose her of all people to obsess over and why he thinks she has so much greatness and potential... Like Karen was much more close to being a “perfect” person than Beck ever was, but I think that’s why Joe couldn’t connect with her - she didn’t “need” him to make her better or to protect her, she was a strong and confident woman on her own. She was also one of the few people to see Joe for who he truly was. Beck was always a weak-willed, weak-minded person who was dependent on others, and Joe saw that and latched onto it, thinking he could be her Prince Charming. Ultimate “nice guy” mentality.
The fascinating thing about abusers/stalkers is that they consider their victims as an aspect in their own lives instead of them being their own person. This leads to them missing the part of a personality that believes “if they’re not a match with you, they’re not meant for you.” Since their victim is just an aspect instead of a person, they see them as ground material to shape and mould what they want in their lives. This leads to not look for a whole person perfect for them, but instead to search for the perfect ground material- that requires a victim to be vulnerable and willing to put up with the type of pressure and changing that comes with the abuse. Joe is a great example of how they think and see the world, and why he chose Beck to become the partner aspect of his life.
Joe seees a new woman: Every fiber of my being is telling me to drop my son off and follow you to an undisclosed location to reaffirm my love. No, your love. Wait….Our love. Something as cliche as marriage shouldn’t stop us from what’s destined.
Idk about it being a trope. Joe doesn't really struggle with morality very much in this show. There is no slow descent into evil like in death note. Joe is just fucked. Especially in the book. If I remember correctly the little boy he gives the sandwich to doesn't exist in he novel. Joe is given even fewer redeeming characteristics in the book
Some people might read this as “Justifng” creepy stalker behavior, but I think this is a great idea. Showing how obsession and stalking from this perspective is unique. The same way a biography about the son of Sam is unique, we are not condoning these actions we are simply, Showing people the way to Hell so they may better Flee from it.
Yes this!! This is why I liked the show so much. I enjoyed watching in horror and fascination as Joe went further and further away from redemption but still got to see why he thought his actions were justified
Maybe so, but from the clips, the dialogue is just horrible. My gripe from the little I have seen is they make the surrounding characters more insufferable to make the killer appealing. It's what they do with plenty of these serial killer shows. If you're going to make a show about a killer, don't pussyfoot into it, go balls out. Make the protagonist the killer and show why you should hate him. The victims should be the connection to the audience from the killers POV and the killer should be hated. Enough making douche bag victims and cast. Make them real. Empathetic with fucking natural dialogue. Lol hearing the psuedo-intellectual shit like Gone Girl dialogue with so much pretention, it just turns me off.
@@tamil8108 I just binge watched the show in one night and if I hadn't perhaps i'd be saying the same thing as you. However after watching it, I realised it is quite incredible and genius and that's because we're no meant to see his victims. Too often does media grow fond in showing us psychopathic killers as the be all or end all of the crazy. These victims being taken out by a mad person, but our fascination comes in exploring the wider world of poor mental health. It is not often that you get a show that so accurately portrays a sociopath, which is the reason why the show can be uncomfortable and unflattering to the victims, because if you don't watch it from his POV, then you're going to miss the type of psychotic that he is. Contrary to your opinion I think the show goes incredibly balls deep into the mind of a killer, the mind of a textbook sociopath, he can't see beyond the face value of those around him, he can't follow social norms, he lies and decieves, he can't make long term plans etc. The way he sees people, and in turn the audience sees them, is the key to his true horror. There's an episode where he does switch perspectives with Beck and in that one episode you really understand that she's normal, the audience gets a break from Joe's psuedo-intellectual prattling and you get a sense of quiet sanity for the audience. I think that episode is executed perfectly, because you truly realise how much noise, analysing and unnatuarly strong opinions Joe has. It's the unbridled crazy of a sociopath, that will never be justifiable. Regardless, of what others say the show does not glorify Joe, or make him any less of a horrible killer, in fact it very much expresses his awful actions and though there is some good in his actions to the boy Paco we must understand that they are self-motivated and not once does he actually feel a desire to 'help' Paco. Yes, we get a moment of sympathy seeing him chained as a young man in the cellar of books, and although those moments imprinted some very dangerous and strong opinions into his mind. His reactions are less than normal. My point is, there's an actual depth to the show and it is well executed. I believe you should give it a chance before you put it down to 'douche bag victims and an empathetic killer'.
I am SO EXCITED that you’re watching one of my favorite shows/book adaptations! The back and forth with Joe is sooo good and I’d love to see more of your opinions about the show later
To me the creepiest character was beck because she had ZERO survival skills and everybody manipulated her. Completely oblivious of her surroundings. In one word CRINGE!
Do not could not agree with you more, she was oblivious to joe and peach manipulating her and yet she is called the smart one! Oh please peach was so much smarter than she is, she knew instantly that joe is a psychopath (because lets face it, she is one too)
The amount of victim blaming there seems to be around this show(haven't watched it myself) is terrible especially considering the majority of the fandom is women. No wonder it was the way it was for us for centuries.
Honestly, I think the reason it might take some people time to realize that is because legit creepy stalker tropes are played straight in a lot of teen romcoms

The thing with the series and the book is that, you sympathize with the villain. Note: he IS the villain. To sympathize with him or at some point root for him is what is expected. BUT you have to recognize that what he's doing is super wrong, is abusive, IT'S NOT LOVE! He is a psycho!!! Don't ship him with Beck or even turn the guilt on her, just a warning. Edit: wow I never got that many likes in my life O.O thank you hahahah
To be honest I didn't sympathize with his character at all, not even a bit, I don't know with the books but this show was just bad, it's like they didn't even try to make him look like a good person. He is a psycho from beginning to end, like you said.
@@LithiumCaryn It's normal not to sympathize with him as well. I've talked to everyone I know who watched the show to understand he's bad and not everyone sympathized with his character, not even from Paco. And it's better like that. @@danielaardila5081 I personally love shows about mental illness, and I loved this one because I've seen so many people debating about what he has. YOU doesn't have a confiable narrative, because it's narrated from Joe's perspective. AND there's the fact that everything is seen kind of turbulent specially when he's talking to or watching Beck. So, I loved the show. If you didn't, that's okay too. I watched a lot of videos talking about the differences and simmilarities between book and adaptation. And in the book, Joe is much more calculative(?), manipulative and Paco doesn't exist. So the first idea wasn't to sympathize with him, I think. About the fact they "didn't try for him to look like a nice guy": you're totally right. They didn't try because he isn't. Actually, they included Paco to humanize more his character, but with each one comes the sympathy or not :)
@@lidiafsr I love shows and movies about mental illness too, and that's why I wasn't so pleased with YOU, but with a show Killing Eve is very much the opposite, I don't know if you have watched it but just in case I won't spoil it, it really different from this one, not only from who the villain is but that I actually sympathize with this person and that's what I mean when I say that they didn't even try, the purpose was show him as a humane character too being sloppy and all but it wasn't there for me and it was supposed to be this character in that I would identify in some way but not really; that's why I talk about Killing Eve it was the contrary, you see this person and you don't want to like it but you can't avoid it is charming, is gorgeous, is funny, with a bunch of etc and then you realize what has done and you feel bad about it but you can't help to find justification in someway of it's actions. YOU had non of that for me and belive me I know what they went for but it just didn't and it was because of the writing like they wanted us to conect with Joe or with Beck or with someone, but there was no one to connect with, every one was written poorly, plane, two dimensions there was just nothing, except with Karen Mindy, the only sane character, but didn't connect with her either just liked her. And if you haven't watched Killing Eve when you watch it you'll understand what I mean when I say that they didn't even try with him.
This show looks like it does a good job at portraying the mind of a really creepy stalker. I mean the fact he seems to have a heart of gold makes it even creepier because no one on the outside would expect him and we as the audience just sit there screaming at the other characters that this dude is crazy. Personally, for me that's what makes it interesting, I'm not rooting for him or really like him in any way. I mean on netflix it's classified as a thriller, drama, and crime show so I think they are trying to go the mind of a stalker route and it does have me really curious.
What I found very interesting about it is that as the plot moves forward, Joe does several “small” things that could be considered as red flags and indicate his creepy behavior, many of which were things that Beck initially got mad at him for but for some reason (idiotically) later forgave/overlooked. I thought they were gonna portray him as being this perfect dude to the outside world, but there are a lot of tiny cracks in his facade that some people could see through if they were observant enough.
That’s what a lot of creepy stalkers are like ... they’re people who do both good and evil things ... they live in their own world. Read accounts of family, friends, neighbors of stalkers turned killers and you’ll understand.
Nora Exactly. In the normal world, it’s not always black and white. Kind people can be capable of doing bad things and monsters can do good things. Joe was a monster. Beck ignored the red flags because he was good looking and played the role of perfect boyfriend very well. All the while, disguising the obsessive parts of himself until the very end
What I find interesting is that by all standards, Beck is kind of a bad girlfriend. I mean she doesn't know he's a total psycho and she gets mad at him for pointing out that Peach is in love with her, then finds out he's right. She gets mad at him for following her (justifiably) buttt she's DID cheat on him with the therapist. She treated his suspicions like he was crazy. But she was cheating on him. Oof. It's weird. To be fair at least the writers didn't cop out and make her some personality-less half-assed "perfect" character. All that being said, don't think I'm justifying Joe being psychotic. Dudes belongs in jail (I'm only on the last episode so idk if he's going to jail yet).
Well, in Beck's defence - it's really unsettling to be in a relationship with someone who's always suspicious of you, no matter what you have or haven't done. It's a huge red flag when your partner tells you what to do and who not to spend time with, because it's a sign of controlling behaviour, and it can get ugly really fast. BUT, I still really don't like Beck. To me, she is a two-dimensional character with no depth at all. And the way she shifts from this "good girl" with moral and integrity, to a cheating liar who suddenly doesn't care about anyone but herself is annoying and confusing. I don't know, I just hate her face. But obviously not as much as I hate Joe hahah, f**king stalker sociopath.
I agree, lol though you should put a spoiler warning over this and go a couple lines down for a *Read More* for people who haven't watched yet. Beck being a perfect character wouldn't have been the same. Her flaws challenge you to see that what Joe is doing is still wrong, even if her actions may make you, and Joe, feel justified in certain situations
Her personality overall isn't that great and the girl he dated later was way better and treated him better and made him happy and made him feel good about himself yet he couldn't stop feeling the way he did for Beck, because as he mentioned it's all about the pheromomes.
i mean, you cant trust the caracter's view, because we only know things by JOE, and joe is a sociopath, who could've had changed the whole story just so that we wouldn't, you know, not be by his side

I mean even before Light went on his whole crazy killing spree (disguised as a justice spree) it kind of was already obvious that he was not a good guy even from Episode 1.
Another thing I noticed in the story was the metaphor between You and Frankenstein’s monster. When paco says that it’s cool because you can read from the monsters perspective and you know that he’s bad but you find yourself reasoning with him and thinking he’s good even though he’s bad it is exactly what the show tries to do with the people who watch it. You know that what joe does is bad but the way that he thinks makes it seem perfectly reasonable. Its easier to reason with him if you read the book but it’s still kind of the same situation with the show.

I dunno just random thoughts:

@@ComedyGlor "nice guy" A guy who claims to be a nice person, often claims only assholes get chicks, and himself is a total shite

He's her male version.
you just blew my mind

The creepiest aspect to me was that they managed to make him somewhat relatable.

Or... You Will Love Joe ! :o
I mean....they also never made anything exclusive either? Lol. But when they did and she cheated that was wrong.
I didn’t like her but I felt really bad when she died. She’s a very realistic character and her life was messy but Joe didn’t have the right to do what he did
She was a realistic character. She had so many flaws, but right to the end I was hoping she’d get better. I think she was very well witten
In other words, remember the Danny Devito rule:
"Replace the protagonist in any romance with Devito. If the movie turns from romance to horror, the romance just sucks."
Alucard ReavaN
Yup, but this isn’t a romance. It’s a satirical thriller.
white guy of narnia
It can be both things. Romance is the force driving the plot. The satire hides in Joe’s narrative musings and the implicit social commentary the show makes. So I’d say both genre descriptors are fitting.
white guy of narnia
Oh sure, they’re often used to display how conceited, arrogant, contemptuous, narcissistic or deluded he is.

"YOU is the creepiest show I've ever seen"
Lmao That's kind of the point Alex!
This show makes the Twilight Franchise look like a healthy relationship in comparison.
Twilight is just an example were the stalking and manipulation worked.
I wouldn’t go THAT far haha
Have you read Lolita? The villain narrates the story, and it almost makes you think that the events portrayed there are romantic or cute, when they are not, same thing here, You is obviously not nearly as good as Lolita, but the way it’s written, makes you simpatice with the bad guy, even though they don’t hide the fact that he is the bad guy, in Twilight, the vampire is an abusive stalker, but even the writer thinks that he is a nice guy, the Prince Charming.
Danny Martínez Lolita is such a good example of this! Such a s good book
Kate Benson yeah dexter is a anti hero
Wow!!! You analyzed these characters so well! I agree with you 100%
Dexter was psycho not sociopath
The fascinating thing about abusers/stalkers is that they consider their victims as an aspect in their own lives instead of them being their own person. This leads to them missing the part of a personality that believes “if they’re not a match with you, they’re not meant for you.” Since their victim is just an aspect instead of a person, they see them as ground material to shape and mould what they want in their lives. This leads to not look for a whole person perfect for them, but instead to search for the perfect ground material- that requires a victim to be vulnerable and willing to put up with the type of pressure and changing that comes with the abuse. Joe is a great example of how they think and see the world, and why he chose Beck to become the partner aspect of his life.
great oberservation! :)

Is it really a trope? I hardly ever find a good show where the protagonist is a bad guy. I mean its always some anti-hero bullshit.
Watch Death Note as well, does the trope really well
@@Jebu911 he tried to seem anti hero but towards the end he gets worse. Ditto death note loved that too
Idk about it being a trope.

To be fair, in my opinion Joe would be a lot easier to hate if the rest of the characters were any less migraine-inducing.
Lookin' at you, Peach.
Oh peach.. she gets hers
I haven't seen it, I can tell I would hate them all equally.
@@tamil8108 at least one of them is redemabable

Tania Scheuermann your so right I mean all joe did was kill a few people once in a while 🙄🙄🙄
They try to label her as somewhat intelligent but she was extremely dumb and naive throughout the whole show.
Joe found his ultimate victim.
That’s the point of the show. It’s supposed to be creepy. That’s what I like about it. How it turns the genre on its head.
you mean like it takes the stalker romance trope and makes it actually creepy (how it’s supposed to be)?
Okay good to see it was intended to be a thriller. Like, take a Rom Com setup and playing it straight for horror is a good idea.
If you like this you should watch The Fall
Honestly, I think the reason it might take some people time to realize that is because legit creepy stalker tropes are played straight in a lot of teen romcoms
irondragonmaiden That’s worrying. Like the number of people who are romanticizing the character of the stalker is worrying.

Out of all the people I've talked to who've watched this, not one of them sympathized with him?
To be honest I didn't sympathize with his character at all, not even a bit, I don't know with the books but this show was just bad, it's like they didn't even try to make him look like a good person. He is a psycho from beginning to end, like you said.
@@LithiumCaryn It's normal not to sympathize with him as well. I've talked to everyone I know who watched the show to understand he's bad and not everyone sympathized with his character, not even from Paco. And it's better like that. I "liked" him the first episodes but then I just wanted him caught or dead lol
I love it when you are disgusted by a character and you still root for it
This show looks like it does a good job at portraying the mind of a really creepy stalker.
Definitely give it a shot. It is a twisty rollercoaster
All the while, disguising the obsessive parts of himself until the very end
the animation of your dog on top of your head is THE CUTEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN
Have you seen the actual doggy?
It's the cutest thing ever 😍
I loved minty way more then beck.
i mean, you cant trust the caracter's view, because we only know things by JOE, and joe is a sociopath, who could've had changed the whole story just so that we wouldn't, you know, not be by his side
