@@tinyt6330 Thanks for the input. That bad news to me. Do you know what other company makes a acceptable quality 30. I checked that size at pet supermarket and it’s perfect.
They are great for the types of fish we keep! :-) Ya, someone told me that a number of years ago and I did the calculations and I was like, dang, that's crazy.
It would be nice if they made a 75 gallon but have the height of the 40 gallon breeder. That would be so sweet to be able to triple stack them on a shelf.
For standard sizes I love the 20gllon long and the 40gallon breeder. Perfect for heavily planted aquascape and you really can't beat the dollar per gallon sales at big box establishments.
I just got a 29 gallon and I'm loving it already! If I could have a huge tank I would, but needing smaller tanks, I think the 29 gallon is the sweet spot!
10s are just nice. A little goes a long way. Great for segregating types of fish if you don’t want to have to worry about finding compatible in huge tanks. For example I have just a Corydora and Octocinclus 10gallon with plants and’s lots of caves.
This channel has been such a blessing to me over the last few weeks. I was watching a ton of aquascaping videos and eventually ran to my local fish store and grabbed a 10 gallon to pack full of plants. I have small female betta in there now because I was eventually planning on adding other fish possibly (with the help of another one of your videos). I don't have space for any more fish tanks currently and my $10 fish has become priceless to me, so I don't want to add anything else without quarantining first. I think I have a problem though because now I'm plotting about a "heavy duty rack" to hold my current tank, another 10 gallon "quarantine" tank, and a larger "community' tank.. which is probably how you ended up with your fish room, huh?
Awesome video as always man! I really enjoy the fact that you add all the fish species in the tanks that you are showing. So many times you see a sweet fish and can never figure out what it is haha. So I really think that's a nice touch keep up the awesome videos🤙🏻
My dream tank is the one my grandad had when I was little. It was a 6ft 2ft 2ft and it was beautiful. I used to dream of swimming in it with his angels. The best I can have at the moment is a 4ft it's a good start
The 75 gallon is my favorite currently. They’re big enough to look nice but not too hard to move around. Whenever I own a house of my own I’d love to have a few 125s or 180s lol
Man I am eating your channel up! Getting my first tank this weekend, and I have learned so much from your channel. I was going to do a 20 gallon. But you and my local fish store have convinced me I have the ability to do a 40 gallon breeder tank.
Great video! Your 40 breeder vs 55 gallon video really helped me decide which tank was a better fit for my space. So soon I’ll have a 40 breeder set up for the corydoras and neon tetras that are in my 20 long - and then I’ll have to think about what I’d like for the 20 long :) Of course I’ll have finally set up that spur of the moment purchase of a 14 gallon cube (shrimp tank? pea puffer tank?) but that 33 long has my attention, too. Oh boy, I’m in trouble! Thanks for all the great content that you and Joanna put out!
I have a 180 gal planted tank and even at 5' 9" I have a hard time reaching the back of the tank. I usually have to use a step stool. But the tank itself is a show stopper. Anyone who I invite over as soon as they walk into the living room and see the tank is immediately taken aback and becomes quiet and just stares at the tank.
My personal favorites: -48"x20"x20". You have 70 gallons, but a 4' footprint. -72"x24"x24". (170 gallons) Because you can keep all but the largest fish in it, and you can still easily reach the bottom for aquascaping. Though I find stocking it with "nano" fish is still very appealing with a sprawling planting... Ya, I'm a bit biased towards the plants over the fish lol ( I look for planting space over all else). I've had a number of others, and part of me wants a monster tank for a coral reef system. But those two sizes are my favorite.
Out of our 5 tanks currently running, I would say the 75 gallon is my favorite size so far. I am not short and have long arms so it works. I have 2 of them, 1 is used as a kind of center of the house divider. My dream would be to set up a 180 (or bigger) in that spot. I love my 20 tall and refuse to part with it, but have upgraded it twice now to a 75 hahaha. I keep finding other stuff to put in the 20 to keep it going. Maybe I'm partial to it because it was my first "real" fish tank and has been a lot of fun to play with.
Excellent video, really helps when planning out a fishroom. If you need an idea for a video then a configuration video showing tanks on stands would be great! Example: 75 bottom row 2x40s and 10's up top. Or other configurations to fit predefined spaces such as a 10ft wall, 6ft corner etc
Agree wholeheartedly with the 180, it is the size I'm considering, had a 110 years ago, entering the empty nest phase, and 180 is the front runner over 150
75 gallons are my favorite tank so far. Also, I had double stacked 40 breeders. I swapped the bottom 40 breeder out for a 30 breeder, which is 4 inches shorter. So much easier to work with now that I have extra space between the two tanks.
I have 7 aquariums, a 5 gallon for my betta, 10 gallon for my rasboras , 20 gallon for my small goldfish, 29 gallon for my angels and german blue rams, a standard 55 gallon for my bigger goldfish and 2 additional tanks for my hospital, and breeding tank. favorite is 10 gallon. What i like about the 10 gallon is that is easy to maintain and a lot more stocking ideas than the 5 gallon which has the same pros and cons. The bigger tanks, you will have way more stocking ideas but the ten gallon, it's just the perfect tank for beginners.
The 40 breeders are amazing tanks. I like the 36x12x16" 30 gallon as well, they've been easier to fit into existing rack systems already set for that 12" width.
Another great video, thanks! My wife says her favorite tank size is 0 gallons. Lol. I still haven't got her "hooked" yet. For me it's fish based, but ive always had a fondness for the 55. (Even in automobiles lol)
Good video! Love the 75 in a 4’ tank. You can get a kit on sale for about $299. Also love the 125. I got one for $499 in a kit. Very hard to find. Never had a 180. On my bucket list!
I really like the 40 breeder for planting. After struggling with 12" deep tanks (38gal and 55gal), that extra 6" of depth is a huge benefit! The only drawback with them is that being a 3 foot tank, lighting options aren't as plentiful as with a 4 foot tank. Also, stands are harder to come by and options are limited. I ended up building a stand and canopy for mine (cost about $100 in supplies). Super easy to do if you have a chop saw, a square, a level, and a decent drill.
Super Video! I know that Variatus cameo was for me!! The 40 breeder used to be my fav until I discovered the 'Clear for Life' Acrylic 40 gal. It's super clear, super light-weight, 3'L x 15" deep x 16" tall. I think it holds about 36 gals. I've got mine deeply planted & currently stocked w/16 Ember tetras, 10 WCMMs, 10 Tiger Endler males, 8 Blue Leopard longfin Danios, 5 Yoyo Botias, 2 Borneo loaches; and it still looks pretty empty until feeding time cause everyone except the danios are off in the greenery. If I didn't love my snails so much I'd put a Pea Puffer in there.
I know this vid is a year old but just want to say i'm finally going to setup my 40 gallon breeder thats been in the works for a year so I can't wait! I also bought a 20 long the other day I'm going to setup as well. I used to want a 50 gallon or a least a taller tank but I'm really liking the shorter, longer tanks and how they look. Love❤️ your channel btw and all the helpfully advice you guys give😝🤘.
If the tank is higher than 15-16" I wouldn't go with the seachem because the 35 doesn't have an intake extension. In that case I would go with a Marineland PRO 175.
12:08 Do the tanks come with the holes pre-cut for the hoses or is the aquarist responsible for cutting the holes? Seems pretty dicey for a DIY project. Just wondering. I don't have the room for a big tank with all my accumulated junk.. I meant treasures cluttering the house.
Love my 20 long. Great for small schooling fish like zebra danios, rummy nose tetras, etc. Low height also means bottom, mid level, and top feeding fish can all feed at the same time with certain kinds of food. Everyone gets fed. I'd have to say my 45 high was my worst tank. Not fond of a 29 either. 40 breeder is working out well for me now as well. I had to make a support bar for the 40 breeder as the water weight was making the glass bow out 1/8-3/16" and my glass covers didn't fit as well near the center. I wish Aqueon would include one on their tanks like they do with the 48 inch tank sizes.
My favorite tank size is the 20 Gallon high, I like it because I don't have a ton of space in my house but the 20 gallon has a small footprint but it still has the gallons and height to keep some interesting fish.
75 gallon has got to be the most versatile tank on this list in terms of ease of entry, and stocking options. Especially for beginners who may want to take their starter setup to the next level.
Thanks Jason, interesting video and great ideas. I think most people have a particular fish in mind that impresses them the most. Then they basically have to fashion the tank to suit that fish. torpedo shaped fish like rummy nose tend to travel in straight lines vertically, and do best in longer tanks. Tall fish like angels and discus would probably need taller tanks. Guppy's go everywhere and tank dimensions are not so important. I like to keep more plants than fish, to help with water quality, but I don't like the plants against the glass when I clean the glass, so I just am not a fan of any tank that's only 12 inches front to back. I think the 40 breeder would be my favourite overall for small community fish, and gives you height to go with the deep substrate format, but at around 460 pounds when full, I worry about the weight factor. So, here I am with my 20 long, as a compromise. I do find it pretty narrow and shallow for plants, but its still best for me. thanks and have a good day.
I'm sidelined with a broken arm which has me watching lots of videos and thinking about aquarium ideas to do when I have healed. I am loving your channel, and it is helping me maintain sanity! Nice informative video here. I love the 75 and the 40 breeder and have each. I've had 55's before, and much prefer the 40 breeder. You have a 4.5 sf footprint vs. 4 sf on the 55 so the 40B can carry the same or even a slightly higher stocking level. It is difficult for me to do a decent aquascape in a 55, because it always looks thin. And if you've got room for a 4' tank, why not go with the 75 or 90 which gives the added depth for better aquascaping? I'm planning to swap out my 40B for a Marineland 53G. Same footprint, but 4 inches more height - same as my 75. Keep up the great work!
Wait a minute! Where’s the 50 low boy? Jk. Good stuff Jason. I’d have to say the 10 is my fav. Just an easy tank to work with overall. Water changes are just so quick I love it. I did pick up my first 15R. I thought about another 20 long, but wanted to try something different. Great video as always J!
Please, the fish at the 5:19 mark, talking about 40 breeder. It's beautiful! Do you have a profile for it? Great info! Never heard of 33L, hmmm, where can I put one of those😆
switched from a leaking 35 gallon to a 65 gallon in October and I love the size.... I find my fish are less shy and more active with all the extra available space.
Hello my Cory catfish female is hiding behind plants and going more up to the surface as well as she sometimes looks like she is glued to the glass higher up. She has laid eggs before and she looks pregnant do you think is related to her laying eggs soon?
Just double check water parameters. That usually means they are a little oxygen depleted. That can happen when ammonia or nitrite spikes, or if something like ich has gotten into the tank.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics there is an air stone and filter all of em started doing it now not just the female she started doing it yesterday now the male is doing it. If something is wrong what would be the fasted fix? I only have one aquarium
My favorite tank is the 33 long. My favorite sized tanks are between 30-40 gallons. Just big enough, but not too big. I also really like the 40 breeder and 40 long.
Started with 20 talls, have eliminated 1 and the other I use for growing plants.. My favorites are my 20 longs and my 55. I have a 37 tall that I hate. I have bad shoulders so I don't enjoy when I have to work on it, having to stand on a stool. Boo. Love your video. Love from Wisconsin.
You’ve sold me on a 40 breeder. Looks great for stocking and aquascaping! I find my 29 difficult for aquascaping with the height and lack of depth. Tall tanks would be great for a community stocked with bottom, mid and top dwellers, but it doesn’t seem all that common for folks to have enough fish in each group to make it necessary.
My current favorite tank is a 5 foot 100g which we hunted for in order to fit a long skinny space in our living room. My schools of smaller fish LOVE the longer footprint to scamper back and forth, plus enough room for my angels, plus I can reach the bottom and back still to maintain. 100g is about as heavy as we wanted to get on our main floor above the basement (and structurally the only place in the house to support one that size).
Great video, always enjoy them. I'm thinking of 33 long or 40 long. Currently have standard 45 , which I want to get something shorter just because I always had taller tanks. Tanks look great!
A "grabber" is usually very helpful. It is a tool that allows people in wheelchairs to pick up things off the floor. That can extend your reach a little. :-)
I have a 36 bowfront, because that's what I got for my birthday and what fits in my living room. I have had so much trouble keeping plants and fish in it, and I don't know why. I did get better lights now (LED technology advanced and prices went down) and they reach the bottom, but make algae on top like crazy. I wanted a 55 kit one day. I used to have a 35 gal and it was awesome for a really nice planted tank. I also had a 10 and 20 where I grew an amazing jungle full of fish.
I love the 20 tall over the 10 simply because it's more versatile. I use mines for quarantine and for growing out fry. But you've really got me interested in the 180 gallon. Likely won't have it ever but a man can dream.
I love the 30 gallon long (36" x 12" x 16" high). Imo, it's the largest "small" tank available. Being short (5'1") I can still reach into the tank all the way to the bottom if necessary, yet that extra 4" in height makes a big difference over 12" in height. And because it's a bit longer, the tank has a left side, a middle, and a right side for fish that are a bit territorial. Drawback - not enough depth for really great aquascaping.
Good morning Jason. I really liked this video. I have always wondered the dimensions of several types of tanks. Now I have my answers! Side note: How often do you squeeze/clean out the detritus from the sponge filters in your tanks? Sincerely, Marty Borst 👍🐠😀
I’ll be setting up a 75 gallon tank after a 40+ year hiatus. I’ll be doing a high tech, high light, aquascaped tank. The dimensions provided the most design options.
Currently on a binge of your videos as my first fish for my 20g long are shipping from Flip Aquatics this week, and I did not know there was a 33g long! I rent currently and it’s a basement apartment so I can get away with larger tanks, but the owners have asked me not to go larger than a 55 gallon. The 33 sounds way better to me though. Could an Angelfish go in a 33? Not sure if there’s enough height or not but maybe the 4ft length would make up for it.
Hello Jason, I really enjoy your videos and one day hope to set up my own fish room. Taking the sizes you recommend here into consideration, what combinations of aquarium sizes do you feel work well together on a rack for a fish room. For example what would you put in a rack with a 180G, and all your 10G are on one rack together, is there a reason for that, why not have a row of 10G above or below a 180G. Really interested in your thoughts behind why you put certain sizes together on the same rack.
You could do that, but I prefer to use the space on a double stand for like sizes. If you were doing 180 on the bottom the best tank above would be standard 20 highs, but turned length wise to get the full 24" of usable space.
I have 3 75’s and 2 40 breeders, the second I just bought to “expand” the surface area of the current 40 which houses 5 types of Tanganyikan fish. 2 of them will be moving soon. I was going to put them all in a 75 but thought 2 36X18 areas would be better than 1 48X18 area. I can’t swing the six foot tank yet, but if I could I would replace all my tanks with 120 or 180 or larger - even for small fish.
I have two 40 breeders, two 55s, two 20 longs, two 10s, and a 5.5. I like the way the 55 looks but not having to stick my whole arm in there. Also there's not a long of space front to back. I don't love that either. But I got them both free, so can't complain.
I currently have a forty gallon breeder, when I saw it at the fish store said to myself “that’s the one.” When I add another I’m leaning toward a 75. Tanks a lot for the video...sorry...don’t block me.
i got a 20 gallon long for my crayfish. he is a real gangsta in there compared to his old 10. would love to get him a 40 breeder but dont have the space
My favorites are the 15 (same footprint as the 10), the 29 or 36BF, the 40B, the 90, and the 125 (though if I had a 180 it would probably trump my 125).
I keep dreaming of having a 125 but with me moving in a couple years and basically living alone at the time, I don’t know how I would move the thing on my own. I have a 75 which I love but even then it weighs 140 pounds when completely empty so moving that will be tricky. Any ideas how to move a 75 on ones own? My mother did have the genius idea of putting it on a rug but that was to move it from one room to another one time.
Great video as I said before I'm just getting back into fish keeping And the 1st tank that I got was a pre owned 180 off craigslist that I had built into my wall which I have not set up yet and I was only going to have the one tank then I went to petco they had a sale I picked up A 75 gallon got a 36 gal from a friend of mine and then today I just picked up 150 gal tall. After watching your video of your 150 with your large fish and them having the space to swim back and forth Has me thinking what type of fish that I would like to put in that tank.

75 gallons are my favorite tank so far. Also, I had double stacked 40 breeders. I swapped the bottom 40 breeder out for a 30 breeder, which is 4 inches shorter. So much easier to work with now that I have extra space between the two tanks.
Thank you! Love the content, Keep it up! Much love ✌️
I'm new to your channel. really good information in your videos.
Thank you!
That's too funny!
Good video! Love the 75 in a 4’ tank. You can get a kit on sale for about $299. Also love the 125. I got one for $499 in a kit. Very hard to find. Never had a 180. On my bucket list!
Another wonderful video! Thank you! :)
What about the new 60gal breeder?
Like that one too!
That sounds like a fun tank!
Thanks for being here!
I never knew 40B was actually 47g 😮.
Love 20L & 40B along with 75. Still hoping one day for a 125! Enjoy the weekend.
Hello Sir Jason.. what model of seachem tidal hang on hob on a 25 gallon aquarium tank. Hope to hear from you... thank you very much...
I don't use any drilled tanks, but some of the larger tanks do come pre-drilled.
Good information. I’ve been considering the 125 but you made a lot of good points on the 180 in regards to extra width for larger fish.
Have a 20 long currently but been thinking of a 40 breeder and 75 gal
40 breeder gets a nod from me, best all around size👍🏻 75g close 2nd.
Great Video. There is a bunch of Tank Sizes I love. But, if I had to choose 3, they would be 20 Long, 40 Breeder and 75.
My favorite tank size is the 20 Gallon high, I like it because I don't have a ton of space in my house but the 20 gallon has a small footprint but it still has the gallons and height to keep some interesting fish.
Very helpful video as always. Thank you 🙏👌👍😊
What are you using for 'racks' for your multi tier'd tanks? Thanks
I built them all - wood.
75 gallon has got to be the most versatile tank on this list in terms of ease of entry, and stocking options. Especially for beginners who may want to take their starter setup to the next level.
10 gallon (nano) and 40 gallon long all stocked with nano fish. Small fish in big taks
I just set up a 90 gallon endler tank lol
@@rayluckman9324 wow that sounds like so much space. males and females?
I want to buy a 20 gallon from petco cuz of the dollar for gallon sale but they are out and the sale ends soon :(
Sometimes you can have them call around and see if the next closest one has them in stock. The nice thing is the sales happen every few months!
I saw a 40 breeder kit at Pet Supplies Plus! I think that’s going to be my next upgrade, eventually.
Hope you heal up soon! Glad you are here!
Where do you get the rock background for your tanks?
They all came from Universal Rocks
Wait a minute! Where’s the 50 low boy? Jk. Good stuff Jason. I’d have to say the 10 is my fav. Just an easy tank to work with overall. Water changes are just so quick I love it. I did pick up my first 15R. I thought about another 20 long, but wanted to try something different.
Great video as always J!
10 gallons are definitely low stress!
Love my 75 gallon but the 20 longs are the most fun especially for scaping!
Both great sizes!
Please, the fish at the 5:19 mark, talking about 40 breeder. It's beautiful! Do you have a profile for it? Great info! Never heard of 33L, hmmm, where can I put one of those😆
Here you go: th-cam.com/video/_MTq01SOC_8/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the reply I was thinking of doing a planted discus tank in the 180 but I like the idea of the angels in the 150
switched from a leaking 35 gallon to a 65 gallon in October and I love the size.... I find my fish are less shy and more active with all the extra available space.
Cool!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Sadly I do not have a testing kit right now. I can go to pet store later today. How much time do I have to fix this issue?
My favorite tank is the 33 long. My favorite sized tanks are between 30-40 gallons. Just big enough, but not too big. I also really like the 40 breeder and 40 long.
Good info. Thanks!
I just bought a 20 long, getting it set up this week, in the future would like to do a 40 breeder and then the 75
Started with 20 talls, have eliminated 1 and the other I use for growing plants.. My favorites are my 20 longs and my 55. I have a 37 tall that I hate. I have bad shoulders so I don't enjoy when I have to work on it, having to stand on a stool. Boo. Love your video. Love from Wisconsin.
I have a 37 gallon too that I'm not crazy about. :-)
That can be a challenge.
So many choices 🤯 , may just have try them all out at some point 🤓
Now you're talkin!
I had a 10g, went to a 55g, downsized to a 20H which is my current setup but just got a 40B and will move up to it in a few months.
That sounds cool!
Great video, always enjoy them. I'm thinking of 33 long or 40 long. Currently have standard 45 , which I want to get something shorter just because I always had taller tanks. Tanks look great!
This is a great video. I wish I would have done more research before I got my 45 gallon but the price was right so I will be content.
If you like th eset-up and you got it for a good deal that's cool!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Jason, I don't love it because it is tall but it is ok. Next one will be what the 33 long. If I can talk Mr. Amberger into it!
I'm planning one day for a double-stacked rack with a 55 below a 40 long, or a 65 below a 40 breeder. Depends on what I will stock.
Any tips on a 125 wide tank? The 48x36x18
Ya, the 180s are so cool
I love the 30 gallon long (36" x 12" x 16" high). Imo, it's the largest "small" tank available. Being short (5'1") I can still reach into the tank all the way to the bottom if necessary, yet that extra 4" in height makes a big difference over 12" in height. And because it's a bit longer, the tank has a left side, a middle, and a right side for fish that are a bit territorial. Drawback - not enough depth for really great aquascaping.
I’ve got this tank on my counter you know how most basic apartment complex’s have that wanna be bar counter
My favorites are the 55g. I have 5 of them
My favorite is the 40 breeder altho I have 2 125 gal and thanks to you I have a 50 gal low boy 😁
240 for me. And yes it’s a total pita to do any work on the floor of it even on a 2 step stool.
Do you not get 5ft tanks in the USA. Here in the uk it’s common to get 5ft 150gallon ( 5ftx2ftx2ft / 60inch x 24 inch x 24inch)
The only somewhat common 5ft tank is the 120 gallon. It tends to be tall and narrow.
20 long, 40 breeder , 75, and 125 are all I have bought and kept other than the specialty fluval flex 15 and 32
Good morning Jason. I really liked this video. I have always wondered the dimensions of several types of tanks. Now I have my answers! Side note: How often do you squeeze/clean out the detritus from the sponge filters in your tanks? Sincerely, Marty Borst 👍🐠😀
Hey Marty - once a tank has been established for 4-6 weeks, we clean them every week in tap water. Never had a problem doing that.
Prime time aquatics, Thank you.
I have 2 tanks that are 20 long, a 15 gallon fluval flex, and multiple 10 gallons. I'm going to get a 40 breeder this weekend! So many options!😁
That's cool - have fun!
Whats the best small camera to keep an eye on my fish while out of the house? Been considering getting a camera :) lol
If it's just to watch your fish - something cheap. Probably a DIY security camera system.
I’ll be setting up a 75 gallon tank after a 40+ year hiatus. I’ll be doing a high tech, high light, aquascaped tank. The dimensions provided the most design options.
Hi. Do you have any videos/reviews about a 60 gallon breeder? Would love to hear your thoughts on that.
I don't but I like them! I probably rather have a 75 gallon though.
Congrats! I would probably stay away from an angel in a 33 long since the tank is so short.
I love 20 gallon longs, my favorite size
10, 29, 75, 180 & 240. With the 75 being my favorite by far.
My favorite is the 29 long, 10, and 20 long
I have two 40 breeders, two 55s, two 20 longs, two 10s, and a 5.5. I like the way the 55 looks but not having to stick my whole arm in there. Also there's not a long of space front to back. I don't love that either. But I got them both free, so can't complain.
40 gallons are my favorite. My rule of thumb is if I can't carry by myself I don't buy. 😉
Not a bad rule!
I currently have a forty gallon breeder, when I saw it at the fish store said to myself “that’s the one.” When I add another I’m leaning toward a 75. Tanks a lot for the video...sorry...don’t block me.
20 and 29 gallon tall tanks are my favorites
i got a 20 gallon long for my crayfish. he is a real gangsta in there compared to his old 10. would love to get him a 40 breeder but dont have the space
You could do that or at most large home improvement stores they sell sliders that can go under the corners to slide the tank as well.
What about the 48 x 24 x 24 ( 120 gallon tanks)? What's your thoughts on them?
I like them better than my 4ft 150 for sure.
Those 4ft 150s are great for severums, angelfish or discus!
My favorite is the 180 gl
6 ft
