    It's great too see that demos are getting the recognition they deserve: here in Europe, they are, apparently, a part of a lot of our lives and seeing that on TH-cam people are remembering them fondly is incredible.
    And you did a good job in covering these games, even if I disagree with some of your opinions: they are not what matters!
    Makes me remember that I must get up since I have demo discs to sort (no joke, I had to do it even before discovering your video, perfect timing!).

    Seeing these demo discs makes me think of a similar way you had to go into record stores and could listen to the music that way before you bought a Vinyl record or cd. Discworld II I really liked to play!

    Once read a theory about this subject and it mentioned that more people decided not to buy the game after playing the demo versus people just getting a game which didn't have any demos available. The reason was that the demo had to be great in order to get peoples to get the game, have a bad demo and... Ye get the idea.

    Correction Dynasty warriors wasn't a 1 on 1 fighter originally. It came out originally in 1991ish on the cps1 board by capcom and you were on a horse you verses 100s upon hundreds. It's sequel (can't remember name now) was a streets of rage style beat em up on same arcade board.

    WarGames was pretty good. It seemed like an RTS but it really wasn't, it was more of a top down-ish shooter. Could also get fairly hard as well since you had a limited group of troops each stage and leaving units alone would lead to some annoyances when you need specific units.
    Colony Wars Vengeance was also pretty good, and difficult at times. Not really best compared to Descent or Forsaken, though.
    Dead Ball Zone... I never played, but I do know about it, purely because I find it funny that, at least in the US, the cover didn't read "Dead Ball Zone", it read "DBZ".
    I'm a bit torn as to the use of the Syphon Filter 2 train level as the demo. On one hand, there isn't too many other levels early in the game I'd say would make for good 'demos', either because some of the levels on disc 1 are stealth or the fact that some of Gabe's levels are on linear areas. On the other hand, I'd say they probably should have used a modified version of the first level with fewer dead teammates.

    This video brought back a lot of memories for me and maybe it's just because I'm older (probably is), but I really feel like most modern games suck. I have a PS4 and enjoyed God of War, RDRII and a few other games. The game I've played most was probably Wipeout: Omega collection which has improved graphics etc, but it's an old concept. I go to IGN's channel sometimes and the last time I saw a trailer that sparked my interest was the Tony Hawk's remake. Again, I'm sure it's just an age thing.

    • @Vakantscull
      @Vakantscull  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I cant really comment cos Ive got close to 100 ps1 and 200 ps2 games but only like 30 or so physical ps4 games so I'd be inclined to agree with you on preferring older games.
      I'd say that game controls are 10 times better now than back then, but I'd also say games were way more creative back when they were finding their feet, but give me a short brilliant 2d game anyday over a well made gorgeous but ultimately boring 100 hour "experience"

  • @RedChems
    @RedChems 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Loved this, very nostalgic, excellent alliteration at the end, and I absolutely agree with your thoughts on demo discs and the current method of demos not being the same. If I could make one critique, I loved this whole format, but if you obtain more demo discs and make more videos like this (which would be great!) I'd recommend cutting out the menu segment in between each game; it just seems to detract from the video and seems unnecessary information-wise as the name of the game is already at the bottom. Other than that, loved this and would love to see more videos like this!

    • @Vakantscull
      @Vakantscull  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I may remake and rework this video at some point in the future, and your advice is going to help a lot if I do because I was pretty unhappy myself with the way the menus were worked in, I just couldnt think of a better workaround at the time :)

    I love how you don’t give a fuck about all the football games. I still don’t get why so many get released, it’s not like they offer anything unique, other than maybe different teams and a different way to control the game. It’s crazy to me.

    • @Vakantscull

      considering most of the rewards for original re1 and 2 were obtained by completing within a certain time, I think the limit in the demo definitely helps instill that sense of urgency to be carried over to the full game :)

    I played the Metal Gear Solid demo over and over and over while listening to Garbage's Version 2.0.
    I loved the Net Yaroze games on these discs too, brought back the magic of the old homebrew/type-ins. Some were shit, some were great... and the barrier to entry was so high with the cost of the Net Yaroze package AND learning C (or was it C++?). The bloke who wrote Terra Incognita went on to GREAT THINGS though.
    I remember the adverts for Deathtrap Dungeon, with Kelly Brook. Oh my. The book was better though.
    Ahhh, V2000. It's a beautiful but unplayable game. Combat is messy, the draw distance is terrible but enemies can attack from out of it. Virus was a classic on the 8-bits from David Braben (one half of the team that made Elite).
    Colony Wars Vengeance intrigued me enough that decades later I bought the full game... and then haven't played it yet.
    Future Cop LAPD! The single player strategy bit against SKY CAPTAIN was the bomb.
    Sentinel Returns was GREAT as a demo. Two levels, easy and hard!
    TOmb Raider III demo was ace too.
    DRIVER! YES! Watch those hubcaps!
    The Medievil Demo being timed was really clever. Loved it, then bought the real game!
    I have fond memories for KURUSHI or Intelligent Qube. Lovely demo, game is SO PRICY.
    It really was a Golden Age...
