My hats off to you for not giving up and just say well I miss one. All hunters should double and triple check after all we owe them to make sure and end it quickly.
Hit a big doe with my truck a few years ago, paunched her bad. I never cut her open. Peeled the skin, got the back straps, took the four legs and left the ribcage and entrails in one piece. Road kill dressing. It was late, she sat in my yard over night, but, it was cold weather.

i smoked a 9 point buck 4th day of MO season. currently at work eating jerky watching this, don't beat yourself up man. she blew multiple times and dropped and dodged rewatched shot about 4 times and i believe you made a good choice with your shot if she dodged difff would have been a quick kill.. my buck was broadside with his head behind a tree and presented a perfect shot at 50 yards but from the ground heart shot him and he went 15 yards knew i needed a good shot cause of the heat.. getting him mounted and he tasted great!
Crap happens. It’s just a reality of hunting. Lord knows I’ve done my share of soul searching after taking a shot in retrospect I should not have. Nothing goes to waste in the woods though. We are human, and we are imperfect. Reality. Keep hunting hard and I ll keep smashing the like buttons
Thanks for the honesty. I have no problem with folks making mistakes. I do it all the time. A couple other lessons from this. That deer was very alert so the likelihood of a frontal shot is even worse. Also, looked like a few more yards than I would have been comfortable with. But I do shoot a 45# recurve with 650 grain arrows that is a crap-ton slower than your bow. Close in and calm deer are the best times for it. A frontal shot can work in the right circumstances but it is advanced level work so if you are new, kill a bunch from the side and then consider it. Thanks again for sharing this.
In my 20s, fixed position and 50# Black Widow. In my 30s, permanent stands and Mathews Featherlight. In my 40s, ladder stands and Z7x. In my 50s, now, Viper and x-bow. I’m too old to start trying a saddle. The Viper is my favorite way to hunt. It’s whatever is safe, makes you confident, and keeps you coming out to the woods.
My first deer I shot was facing me but got lucky and hit an artery near the neck. She only ran 60 yards but she was only 12 yards from me when I shot. I say take what ever shot you're confident shooting. Awesome job finding her.
I killed one a few days ago and I haven’t ever killed a deer this early and I probably will not kill another until cold weather... skinning and quartering in the heat is terrible
Great recovery on a tough trail. Got to be careful on those warm early season hunts. I hit a September deer in the hindquarter that jumped string, and had to run him down. Luckily I clipped the femoral and he did go down after I jumped him three or four times. So I was on him, he never got ore than 100 yards or so after a jump. But he had bloated by the time I put my hands on him, and I wasn't waiting more than 10 or 15 minutes after he'd jump to follow again, to keep him bleeding.
Head on with a bow is a good shot. Lethal if you hit the deer. Non lethal if shot is poor or a miss. Lack of blood is the downside. Mark the turkeys for later brother.
Yo just wanted to give you a shout out catman...I too hunt only public...its on a whole different level taking a deer on public versus private...in fact I don't even care to watch certain videos...anyone can pour corn out and shoot deer but killing them the way you and the thp boys do it, I can relate...I'd love to meet up with all you on the public land challenge

I had an old German guy that helped me with my archery form tell me once, "when a doe comes out early and blows and stomps, ya' gotta' make her pay for it." LOL
I just shot a big buck head on Sunday at LBL. No blood trail at all. Found him about 75 yards away. I was on the ground though. I still had a tough time finding him it was thick.
I did the same thing last week with a buck. I shouldn’t have shot… but adrenaline gets the best of us sometimes. And luckily it worked out for me too. After 36 years hunting I’m still learning. Great video!

That's why i quit hunting until cooler weather long ago. I hate to waste anything, i hate to sweat trying to hunt and i hate the dang mosquitos. Not knocking anybody else mind you but the cool weather is what gets me in the mood. lol Hope to see you get a big one this year J.

Instead of such an early season, I'd rather have all of January and some of February to hunt. Let it start mid October.
