Had a similar experience this year with a rifle. Got my a buck during my first year 'tracking' and solo but with the lack of snow it was more like a casual forest meander. He stood up and started browsing at most 15 yards away. Hit him low single lung (thought it was heart from the blood trail but during processing I gain a new respect for the concussive power of the 30-06) and he barely flinched. Walked maybe 15 yards before bedding and I bumped him once with my rookie excitement. He only walked another 10 yards before bedding for the last time. It was also pretty hard for me to watch his final moments like that even though the time between the shot and him expiring was 2 minutes at most. Awesome buck! A hard video to watch, but unlike others, I don't think it was a bad shot. Based on entrance and the angling forward exit wound it looked like a good ethical shot. I have seen deer expire quicker from worse shots. Not all deer react the same when hit by an arrow. Some years ago I doubled lunged a 7 point that ran 40 yards out of the brush, then 200 yards across a cut soy bean field, over railroad tracks, and expired 40 yards inside the next woodlot. When I dressed him out, both lungs had an X in them. Go figure.

I think the initial shot was a touch back. Wasn’t a double lung shot by any means. Probably straight liver and maybe clipped a small piece of one lung. Glad you got another arrow in him. Hard to judge if you could have sooner or not. Hell of a buck. Congrats
Thanks man. Like I told others I think the shot looks back because the front leg is extending forward at the shot. I quartered this deer myself as I do every deer I harvest and I can assure you the first arrow got both lungs. Thanks for watching
Great buck! Congrats. First shot looked a little too far back. Guessing Liver and one lung. He would have died from the first shot for sure but you did the right thing by putting another arrow in him. I was wondering why you didn't do that sooner. Where did the second arrow hit?
Believe it or not the deer had 3 holes in his lungs. If you go frame by frame on the 1st shot you’ll see the arrow kicked forward slightly from where you last see the fletching. 1st shot entry was mid way up the lung and on the outer edge. Exit was lower 1/3 of offside lung and outer edge bc the lung tapers down toward the front leg. 2nd shot entered high in the lung (exit lung from 1st shot) and exited out the diaphragm
Man, thats a nice buck but it was hard to watch, i shot a doe pretty much the same way many years ago, it got to me so bad mantally that i didnt bow hunt the rest of the season because i felt so bad,the anti hunters try to make us hunters into cruel heartless murderers but from reading these comments it proves that we all as hunters have compassion for these beautiful animals that we are lucky enough to be able to hunt
If it was Eastern cheatham county, is it good chance it's the same deer have pictures of him going back 2 2019 . If yes, would be glad to send them to you.
Wow.....That old boy was tough...... Great shot and he just seemed to get mad and refused to go down.....If someone had shot him and it was a lesser placed arrow, there is no telling how far he might have traveled...... Great job from one TN hunter to another......
@@whitetailhungry6899 is that an ozone generator you got hanging there? Looks like a Scentlok OZ. Does it work? Also looks like a rappel rope and a vergo? Are you SRT climbing?
@@chrisgolden8199 it is a scentlock OZ. I haven’t really noticed much of a difference. Probably won’t be in my pack this year. I used it for a while as more of a what could it hurt type thing. And no I’m not SRT climbing here although I do it on occasion if I’m hunting a tree I’ve hunted previously with a preset paracord loop. I was 1-sticking here with OOAL Sh1kar one stick and using a madrock safeguard belay device to rappel.
Thanks for sharing, most are too afraid of pushback to post something like this, but it’s part of the game. I highly doubt he felt much…. He was delirious. Always crazy to see how tough a big mature Whitetail buck is. That’s a really nice buck as well!!!!!. Good deal putting a second shot in them. Always take a second shot if you can….. make holes!!! Can you tell us what you hit on the first shot?
Absolutely, I know the shot looks back but if you slow it down and go frame by frame which I am able to do on my editing software you can see the arrow kicks forward a bit right at impact. The entry was about midway up the lung and on the back edge of it, the exit was the bottom back 1/3 where the lungs diagonal down to the front leg ( about center of the lungs if you look at total lung length. Second arrow entered the same lung as the initial shot entry high in the lung and exited low out the diaphragm.
I suspect that your broadheads were NOT razor sharp. That 1st shot exited low and it probably missed any major arteries. That buck died from suffocation and not blood loss. No blood was exiting his mouth/nose area, further evidence of minimal bleeding in the lungs.
Spot on and I agree. I do however think I could have likely gotten the follow up shot off a little sooner but hindsight is always 20/20. Live, learn, and try not to make the same mistake twice. Thanks for watching!
The exit was right on the back edge of lung and low. Entry was perfect up and down and back 1/3 or so of lung. It looks a little back because his leg is extending forward at the shot. It was certainly a wild experience for me.
What kind of broadheads do you use sir? Im not a big fan of the rage. I did harvest a big 8 pt 3 years ago with a 3 bladed Rage. At 8 yards from the ground, i knocked him straight to the ground. I drew the bow while he was looking dead at me! He was in a rut craze and the deer lure had him goofy in the head. Nice buck Congratulations Sir!!
Obviously mortally shot. In my view that deer was blind going around and around due to blood loss. As hunters we do the best we can to make a clean quick kill, but this is hunting and it doesn’t happen as quick as we hope. Congrats on a nice buck
🎯 thanks man. yea I honestly think even without the second shot he probably would have only gone another 10 yards or so before going down. I just couldn’t stand to let it go on any longer.
You definitely had time to put another arrow in him. And am I the only one noticing it looks like 2 of the sits you sat up on the wrong side of the tree. The ways you kept trying to maneuver around. Definitely didn't look comfortable.
Thanks for watching. Yes, i had time but what you can’t see in the video is that there was a 6 point and a doe within 30 yards of me and after the 1st shot they were both had me pegged. I didn’t think I could grab another arrow without spooking them all until he went thrashing through the brush. I then put another arrow in him the first chance I had. As for my setup, it only seems like the wrong side of the tree because the buck didn’t come through the strip of timber I was hunting which is why you see me filming the deer 100+ yards away rather than in bow range. Every time I made a move to where i last saw him, he and his doe shifted and did something different.
@@lecardios serious question what exactly would single bevel broadheads have done here that these fixed blades did not? I encourage you to rewatch the video after the first shot. If you watch closely you’ll see blood dumping out with every step he takes.
@@lecardios yea I guess that’s a possibility. I’ve had a hard time getting good blood trails with single bevels in the past and the wound channel seems to be somewhat small from my experience. Now I don’t think there’s anything better if you hit bone but I tend to try to stay off the shoulder a tiny bit anyway to hopefully avoid that. These QAD exodus seem to be a pretty good balance between single bevels and large diameter expandable. They kind of bunch a square hole but still do pretty good on bone contact if you make a mistake or hit a rib. From my perspective there’s always a trade off somewhere no matter what you shoot. Anyway, thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts and good luck this season! Hope you kill a giant
It’s easy to sit here and armchair quarterback so I will start with a congrats on taking a great old deer. With that being said, your first shot is clearly low and back. You may have clipped the bottom of the offside lung but there is no way you got that front side lung. Arrow to expiration of a true double lung shot is 30 seconds or less, 75% of the time. The variable on that time line is the amount of ground covered, sometimes they go on a hard death run, but with 30 seconds they crash. Again, not trying to armchair QB but, you should have stuck him again a lot sooner. It could have reduced the cringe factor of the video. Congrats
Thanks for the congrats but I’d love to see where you got your statistics because like I mentioned in replies to other comments with similar thoughts, I quarter the deer I kill myself. When I cleaned and quartered this deer both lungs were hit with the first arrow. The entry was mid way up and back 1/3 on front lung and exit was bottom back corner of offside lung. Second arrow entered high and back in the exit lung from 1st shot and exited out the liver.
I wouldn’t call that smokin him or smashing him. I’d call that 2 bad shots & very hard to watch. As an archery hunter that’s what we try and avoid with shot placement.
Dude so happy for you, but the suspense should be your experience, not more ammo for the anti hunters. I get it that things don't always go right and somethings are out of our control but last thing we need right now is some idiot watching this and turning them away from our cause and beliefs. Would have been a better video if you showed up to the shot and the recovery
Why in God's name did you not put another arrow in him you had the perfect chance it was the ethical thing to do as a bowhunter instead you let him suffer all that time I don't understand.he came right under you almost .your bragging and I'm shaking my head brother
What you don’t see is there’s 2 other deer inside of 30 yards outside the frame of the video staring at me after the 1st shot. I wasn’t able to get another arrow without spooking all the deer until he started thrashing in the brush.
I wish I had taken picture when I cleaned him. This was not a gut shot. You are seeing the exit wound when the shot was slightly quartering to. The entry went right into the middle of the near side lung and this exit was right on the lower back end of the lung. The second shot entered high in the near side lung and exited in the liver.
Appreciate the feedback. I’m working on getting an external lapel mic that I think will help. I’m fairly new to the filming game so always looking to improve
Congrats, but man this is what gives us as hunters a bad name.I know ya wanna leave this up.I would do a lot more editing to this a just tell the story. This was brutal!Ive been deer hunting 40yrs here in Tn.Ive only had that happen one time.Just a thought in re-editing this….
Thanks for the feedback and I’ll consider it. Honestly, I think most of what you see here is actually what happens the majority of the time when you shoot one and it runs off. We just don’t usually see it all unfold. I suspect 98% of people who watch this are hunters like you and I and I’m hoping others can learn the lesson I did which is no matter how good the first shot is, always be ready to get a quick follow up shot if you get the chance.

What county is this?
One of the Middle TN ones. 😉
That was one hell of a video...congrats!
Glad you enjoyed it man! It was certainly cool to experience first hand
Love the video....wish things would have went a little differently but congrats on a good buck
@@mikel.4885 glad you enjoyed it and I agree! Thanks for watching
He didnt want to give up!
Can I ask id this was killed in Davidson County TN? Had pics of a buck looking just like this 1 for years, but he was very random.
No. One of the bordering counties 😉
If it was Eastern cheatham county, is it good chance it's the same deer have pictures of him going back 2 2019 . If yes, would be glad to send them to you.
I appreciate the offer but not the same deer. Quite a ways from there
@@whitetailhungry6899 cool, then congrats on the great buck 👍
Thanks man. Appreciate it!
There a tuff breed those deer I took one doe this year in the brisket and she poured blood like a person doing a oil change she still ran 30 yards
Yes sir. Tough indeed
Wow.....That old boy was tough...... Great shot and he just seemed to get mad and refused to go down.....If someone had shot him and it was a lesser placed arrow, there is no telling how far he might have traveled...... Great job from one TN hunter to another......
Thanks man. Appreciate the comment and view!
Congrats man! that is a stud.
@@chrisgolden8199 thanks man. I’m certainly happy with him!
Cool footage. Nice buck
Thanks man! Merry Christmas!
Congrats man you smoked him. Is this Rutherford County?
Thanks man and no sir.
I don’t say it often but good video.
Thanks man. Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice deer!
Thanks!
Sweeeeet! Lucky to get a follow up. You don’t see that often!
Thanks man. My first time getting a follow up shot on one. I definitely prefer when it’s not needed but made for a pretty crazy hunt.
Good job man. Congratulations
Thanks man! Like and subscribe please!
I suspect that your broadheads were NOT razor sharp. That 1st shot exited low and it probably missed any major arteries. That buck died from suffocation and not blood loss. No blood was exiting his mouth/nose area, further evidence of minimal bleeding in the lungs.
Trying to learn here:
What exactly does razor sharp broadheads have to do with clipping a major artery vs just puncturing the lung?
Wow awesome buck and awesome kill episode. Congrats to a great buck and hunt
Thanks man. Glad you enjoyed it. Good luck this year!
Deer do all that 9/10 every time they get shot with a bow..the people saying it was hard to watch just never get to see that part awesome deer my guy
Spot on and I agree. I do however think I could have likely gotten the follow up shot off a little sooner but hindsight is always 20/20.
Live, learn, and try not to make the same mistake twice.
Thanks for watching!
@@whitetailhungry6899 you gotta new subscriber simply for responding. I pray the rest of your season continues with the luck
First shot look pretty far back. That footage was nuts!
The exit was right on the back edge of lung and low. Entry was perfect up and down and back 1/3 or so of lung. It looks a little back because his leg is extending forward at the shot.
It was certainly a wild experience for me.
Awesome a fellow Tennessee video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you get out and hunt some big bucks this season
Wow. He said, he smashed him. That buck took every thing you had.
Thank you sir! QAD Exodus 125gr
Tough old buck!
Tough ole boy. If he had been in a 40 acre field that woulda been a 500 yard track and you mighta lost him him in briars and wild roses.
Absolutely possible. This was actually right beside a 35 acre crp field so that was a real possibility here.
I bet that was intense! Very nice deer.
What part of Tennessee was this if I may ask?
It was super intense. A whirlwind of emotions. Middle Tennessee.
That's right experience.you still have some learning to do .but nice buck anyhow
Always more to learn!
That deer had a will to live brother
You got that right
Jesus , imagine trying to follow that blood trail in the dark 😳👍🏻🏹🦌
He was dumping it for sure! I’ve had pretty good experiences with the blood trails from the QAD exodus especially for a fixed blade
That was brutal.
Nice buck don’t get much better than that.
Thanks man. Good luck this season!
Never seen the likes
@@RubinA-y3s4h same man. Pretty wild experience. The longer I hunt, the more these animals amaze me
You definitely had time to put another arrow in him.
3 words.......single bevel broadheads.
At least he didnt run 200yrds in a frenzy. Congrats on a pretty buck
@@lecardios serious question what exactly would single bevel broadheads have done here that these fixed blades did not?
I encourage you to rewatch the video after the first shot. If you watch closely you’ll see blood dumping out with every step he takes.
@@whitetailhungry6899 possibly could have done a bit more internal damage to a major artery. (Possibly)
@@whitetailhungry6899 Ya, thanks for sharing. Got a trip planned next week. We'll see how it goes. Fingers crossed 🤞 a big one will step out.
I double lunged one that went about 400 yards up and down some really steep hills and a couple were damn near straight up
Monster man.
Thanks
I wouldn’t call that smokin him or smashing him. I’d call that 2 bad shots & very hard to watch. As an archery hunter that’s what we try and avoid with shot placement.
I am new to hunting and I can't find good places. If you can help me, I will appreciate it, thank you.
❤
That buck is no giant I guess it's a good buck with a bow but definitely is no giant! Lol!
@@paulmccormick6295 cool man. Thanks for watching. lol
Looks like a Williamson county buck
Maybe… Maybe not.. 😂
@@whitetailhungry6899 there’s some good bucks out that way, shot a 140” 8 pointer on Halloween this year. Great buck, congrats!
@@jacksoncunningham5378congrats man! I’ve always loved that time of the year right around Halloween
Nice…
Thanks man!
Poisoned arrow if u ask me
What?? Is that actually still a thing? Didn’t they ban those like 30 years ago in all states?
Why in God's name did you not put another arrow in him you had the perfect chance it was the ethical thing to do as a bowhunter instead you let him suffer all that time I don't understand.he came right under you almost .your bragging and I'm shaking my head brother
What you don’t see is there’s 2 other deer inside of 30 yards outside the frame of the video staring at me after the 1st shot. I wasn’t able to get another arrow without spooking all the deer until he started thrashing in the brush.
Just a case of A BAD SHOT (GUT SHOT) & who knows on the second shot
I wish I had taken picture when I cleaned him. This was not a gut shot. You are seeing the exit wound when the shot was slightly quartering to. The entry went right into the middle of the near side lung and this exit was right on the lower back end of the lung. The second shot entered high in the near side lung and exited in the liver.
you have to talk louder or don't talk at all!!!!
Totally agree .
