I'm going to take a guess and say that new Dex looks like it may be a test for the total replacement for the Samsung tablet experience. Dex will go as an option and the new Dex will be the default interface for their high end tablets. Its blending the standard tablet and Dex interface together, making the standard interface irrelevent in the long run. It would cut down on the need to keep developing two interfaces for the same tablet. Thats just my guess anyway.
That was my assumption as well. They'll probably end up keeping the typical layout too buried in some settings or in Good Lock, but I expect new Dex to be the default tablet experience at some point if it pans out.
Not having the external monitor support 9n rhe new DeX is odd. I feel like that's the biggest advantage of DeX. At least they let you go back to "classic" to get the proper monitor support.
Argh! Yes! I even used that feature just last night! Also, while Samsung forced their awful (IMO) "Samsung Keyboard" when using DeX on the tablet display due to the use of what I believe is a proprietary closed API, I can use Gboard in the dual display configuration as it would just show on the tablet display!
The new "DeX mode" doesn't actually launch DeX. It's just a modified System UI overlay, which is a lot more performant and efficient, because DeX is hella heavy. We just don't notice it now due to countless improvements and devices getting more powerful. That's why it doesn't support external monitors. You're basically using a modified tablet mode. The taskbar is the same as the Fold because Samsung decided to use the native Android taskbar added in Android 12.1. If they can eliminate the DeX separation, they can get more support from app developers, as Google will never add something like DeX, so they want Samsung to support their features natively. This will help Pixel Fold's app ecosystem in the long run.
But the whole idea of DeX mode is to have a separate interface that is more geared towards using it with a mouse and keyboard. Windows tablets are not popular for this reason, touch interfaces are just different. It makes sense to have separate interfaces. DeX mode without external monitors and peripherals is just a big touch device, and the whole mode would not make any sense. The reason people love DeX is that it turns its touch tiny phone into a big desktop computer on a big screen. I don't want a giant touch screen on my TV or monitor.
I love dex! I think it's the most overlooked game changer in both industries I work in. Primarily education, Imagine teachers being able to interact with their students in tablet form, then jumping into dex to do their lesson planning, or even projecting their display on a TV. It would save so much money on Smartboards, and it would be convenient for teachers to have one device for their classroom management.
Tab S9 Ultra user here. I've found that using tablet mode, multi-tasking, and minimizing to a bubble is basically just as effective as new DeX. Especially when you have it set to pull full-screen apps into pop-up mode by dragging from the top-right corner. I really don't need to have a persistent taskbar... Though, new DeX does solve my only gripe with old Dex - the ability to have widgets on the desktop.
Minimizing to a bubble instead of the taskbar is frustrating. You have to do an additional gesture to expand the bubbles to see the apps you have minimized. Having them readily available and viewable in the taskbar is far better UX.
@@nickthaskater To each their own. I don't mind the extra click and I like the additional real estate I get when the taskbar is not visible. I am, personally, able to focus on a task better. Also, I like not having a titlebar on each window. I don't miss it.
@@segaboy9894 there's no reason that the taskbar couldn't be hidden by long pressing it, just as you can on the Tab/Fold already. That negates the lost real estate if/when you want more screen space. You can also swipe up to show the taskbar if it's hidden. I agree with the title bar issue. There was no reason to change the behaviour of the title bar from the standard pop up window which allowed you to choose whether to collapse or expand the title bar. That was a big oversight by Samsung and should be corrected to align with the standard pop up window title bar behaviour.
@nickthaskater I don't understand your logic. You say you agree with me about the pop-up windows, but those require an extra click to reveal the window controls. If you need a persistent taskbar to save a click, why don't you need a full title bar to save a click as well?

The feedback on the new Dex is universal. I hope they listen. I love your "Pop Up Window" branding suggestion. Makes more sense to make this new mode just a new tablet mode: *Default / Pop Up Mode* and then for Dex, they can keep the classic layout and import the few new good features.
The original Dex is good for both external monitor and when keyboard & mouse attached. I personally use it a Galaxy Tab more as a tablet with my fingers. The original Dex mode is not so finger-friendly, that's why I didn't use it too often. I can see myself using the new Dex mode more but I haven't received OneUI 6.0 on my Tab S8+ yet. I totally agreed with Thao that the new Dex should be called an Hybrid mode rather than confusing it with the original Dex mode.
I have never liked classic DEX for tablet only use, and because of how big and persistent the taskbar is I tend to not to use it even when I'm using it like a laptop, but I would never excuse them removing features like 2nd screen support just because it's not something I use.
Well its really not weird if they give you the option to go back to classic mode!! The new layout is great for casual usage whereas the classic mode is great for more comprehensive usage.
1:58 it's because you can hide it partially at each side of the screen, including the corners with the application fully opened in the floating window I use this feature a lot, and it is very helpful during multitasking

I want this as the default UI on the Fold. They should have left the option for the window bar that floating windows have where you can either minimize or expand the bar. I use my Fold with floating windows and an external keyboard all the time, but the inability to minimize floating windows to the taskbar on the Fold is such a pain.
I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 9 Ultra and am totally happy with it. Only use it in DEX mode as a desktop or laptop replacement. However, I don't have a Samsung keyboard case but I use a Logitec Bluetooth keyboard and the Apple Magic Track Pad as a mouse replacement. I bought a tablet stand from Anker (which Thao introduced a year ago). I can connect two USB sticks to these or connect a screen with an HDMI cable. This setup is sufficient for my purposes.
I'm an iPad user, and it looks like Samsung is trying to copy Stage manager which is weird considering that they had a solution in Dex that i have always considered superior to it. They should stick with Dex, it's really an awesome and quite unique feature !
Yah hybrid is really true. The old classic Dex was quite good, but obviously needed some help. The short coming mostly came down to Android being primarily a phone, single app at a time OS. I replaced a laptop with Dex and hooked it to my 34" monitor. I daily drove it for over 2 months for work. If I could have a Window experience that made Android work better, I would ditch Windows in a heart beat, except for gaming.
I have only one comment here, I own the S9 Ultra, and I use it pretty much in Dex mode. One thing I don´t like is when I receive a phone call, I don't see it on my tablet, where in tablet mode I receive all the phone calls notifications from my phone on my tablet. Thanks a lot for all your amazing Samsung videos.
I'm a user of Samsung DeX and this left me in a mixed feeling. Screen-mirroring only DeX is pointless to me and is the complete opposite of what I use DeX for.
Gosh. I'm fine with UI tweaks, but removing extend mode for external displays is unacceptable. One of the reasons I bought this product was exactly the support for proper display output.
My older Tab S6 wouldn't get this for sure but this makes me excited to get a newer Galaxy Tab. I love DeX, it's served me well for many years & was my OTG device when my old laptop started failing me.
A problem Samsung has in the laptop scene is that there are now so many affordable, POWERFUL machines users can pick with features that suit their exact needs instead of shelling out an arm and a leg for a flagship.. designer laptop that "does it all" I was able to buy myself a nice ROG strix G15 with a high end CPU and an RTX 3050 mobile which absolutely does everything i need and then some for a very reasonable price... i've never even looked at Samsung's offerings.
I'm a Tab S7+ user here and even typing on it right now. 😂 The thing I have to say is the One UI Updates have made me use Dex a little less, that and not being in school anymore. The Dex experience doesn't work for me to wait on when I only have at most two apps opened. I think the new Dex looks like it just takes the current One UI on Android and morphs it slightly. I have the bottom taskbar from the latest One UI update this tablet got, which pretty much makes switching between apps a breeze as it holds my most used apps in one spot. I have much of my UI like the top bar hidden with Good Lock, and overall I haven't needed to use Dex as much because of it. I would like to see Dex get pushed a little more, but I think perhaps with their recent One UI changes, they saw more users like me not putting Dex on because it pretty much does what Dex does very well for most cases. I also don't have to worry about the title bar at the top, since I have it hidden (thought maybe recent One UI changes have made it reappear). I thought you could do the same in Dex, but that probably shows it's been so long since I've used it. Great video though, and thanks for the insight. I'm glad they still give you the option, and hope it doesn't go away. I like the look and feel of the other Dex still from the looks of it. I know people like their widgets, but I barely use and have any personally. Though maybe over time they'll bring back some things mising from old Dex to the new Dex when I upgrade my tablet some day.
@@whitneym.6941 Yeah it won't have the latest features, but if it elps, I am perfectly happy still with my S7 plus. Performance is still good, and I do things from watching movies, browsing the web, filling out PDF forms, and even playing games. My current "modern" game, if this helps, is Honokai Star Rail, and I have been enjoying it just fine on my Tab S7+ which runs it fine on medium settings for the most part without too much issue. I cannot max it out, but I think it looks great on Medium and I tailored some settings to hit more at 60 FPS than 30.
Your last statement is so true. They don't want it. Business is Business. Comfort comes later until some competitors come in and make a kink in their Monopoly.
I'm so bummed out that they focused more on UI redesign than on fixing the mayor problems Dex has. Maybe Thao can help us voice some concerns I know many users and even reviewers have: 1. TH-cam Shots notifications look absolutely hideous on Dex. It shows up as a portrait notification with a horrendously pixelated thumbnail. 2. Double Tap on the trackpad should simulate a click, but it does nothing. To click and drag one has to physically click, or leave your finger on the trackpad so it recognizes it as a long press for some reason. 3. Speaking about the trackpad, when rezising pop up windows, dragging with 2 fingers on normal tablet mode it works as click and drag, which is genious; but for some reason it doesn't work like that on Dex. One has to click and drag physically. 4. The biggest complaint I have seen is the mouse pointer not behaving as a mouse, but as a finger. Samsung already has this baked in the software for the SPen. On any app you can select text like a mouse with the spen, but the actual mouse or trackpack works as a finger. The only place where this works is on the Samsung Browser. I absolutely love Dex, I use it every day. But it is far from perfect.
1:56 it's not random, look closely: If you "swing" it fast, Dex thinks you want to quickly arrange it so it's fixing up the overflow. If you hold it a bit longer, Dex thinks you want to precisely put it there on purpose (so it lets you do it)
For me to use dex, the loading time and the window mechanics were a deal killer, but the 2nd screen support is essential tho. I do like the window mechanics as they are closer to windows.
loadin time? it takes about a second to load into, much quicker than turning on your pc, what do you mean 2nd screen support? do you mean having dex running on 2 seperate screen bcz if so it will tank your performance you have to remember all this is running off your phone natively
Dex always amazes me. How is Samsung through Android and Apple able to make a whole os feel so snappy while windows is struggling. You put this in a laptop and you have a winner. Obviously powered by ARM.
Funny thing, I've been searching for months now for the tablet that will work for me (no Apple though). From Lenovo Legion Tablet to Samsung Tab S9. I'm most certainly going to go for the Tab S9 Ultra BUT then I thought, why not go for the Surface Pro. It's not easy to find someone directly comparing them even for a brief moment so I'm glad you did mention it towards the end of the video!
I noticed when you said it's unpredictable for the bringing the app back into space, what seems to be happening, is when you are "throwing" the app, it will bounce it back to the edge. When you move the app to a place, stop, and lift your finger, it stays there.
I'm glad they left the Classic mode in. I would riot if they take that away. The whole point of Dex for me is to get Android to as close a desktop replacement as possible. Otherwise I would just buy an iPad Pro.
I love that Samsung still gives users choices and options to use the new or old one, that's why I love OneUI so much, freedom is already their first priority❤❤❤
They need to keep DeX working the way we are used to. I mean, it is now widely available even in the midrange segment, and students and small businesses can take advantage of it (if they happen to us Galaxy Tab for their needs).
Dex is the main reason i got my tab and also a price😂. Was really excited with the one ui update but was really underwhelmed with what they added. Was really hoping for more. Maybe i just have not give it a chance but idk
@@ljacobs357 i know i still use it. I was just expecting better improvements. What i would really like is a better experience when using a second monitor maybe something like Windows.
I just updated my S8 Ultra to OneUI 6 but hadn't checked out Dex (since I never use it), so thanks for this update. I'll have to check Dex out again. For me, how it rearranged everything and forced me to redo all my setup and learn new ways of doing things was a barrier, and that's why I stopped using it. While this new one clearly has limitations (the external screen issue is a bummer), I could see myself using it more. Will give it a whirl...
That's pretty clever. It looks like if you flick a window it'll return to useable space but if you hold and drag the window you can drag it off screen. 🙂
what i don't like with One UI 6 for the TabS9 is that they placed significant spaces on both left and right sides of the home widgets. I prefer my home space fully maximized.
So now when you add another screen to a tablet in Dex mode it just duplicates. This is a MAJOR backward step for productivity when travellling.. Samsung needs to fix this
I believe that Dex mode will become a kind of standard operating system for tablets, with a little improvement it combines the best of the conventional Android system with the productivity of Windows, which has always been the main reason for the existence of tablets, productivity
It's about damn time! Been praying & hoping Samsung would update DEX since the S21. It's needed serious quality of life updates and hopefully this hits mobile in 2024.🙏🏾
since i have a Tab S8+, the new Dex is perfect. it actually makes my tablet and the apps a whole lot easier to use. i would much rather have an app open up as a window first, then allow me to resize as i need. it just feels better.
I discovered the Chromebook, and gradually I use it more and more. It replaced my tablet (which is not a laptop even with DeX) and also my laptop (which is not a tablet even with a touchscreen). It's amazing how flipping the display turns it into a tablet and vice versa... I use Penoval styluses and it replaced the Samsung S-Pen as well. Yes, Chromebooks are generally targeted at a different group of users. But I think that the more expensive Chromebooks completely beat tablets and laptops in terms of productivity. And yes, it's still taking time for Chromebooks to cross the luxury $1,000 mark and break out of the student category.
its not the same, even if your chromebook its powerfull enough the android apps are running in a virtual container and had a bad integration with chromeos, i use cromeos for much time and dex and ready for for motorola and lenovo are best solution for my, cheers....
I wonder if you can create an automatic modes and routines thing that switches between the classic and new dex modes when you connect or disconnect from an external screen.
Good content. I have a Tab s8 Ultra and I admittedly don't use DeX much, but I just tried the new version while watching this video and I think it's really bad. Thanks for letting me know I can use the classic version. I really hope Samsung doesn't sunset the classic DeX, as I do really like it. I just don't have a need to use it often because I also have a Galaxy Book 3 Ultra. In fact, I have way too many different Samsung electronics.
I never used it, but if you swipe to fast, your finger is coming in contact with the bottom of the screen. That is when it bounced back. Not if you move it slowly and not going outside of the screen. Makes sense. So you clould have figured it out yourself
I think if they make it a new seperate mode, it's a really nice hybrid addition to the existing software. Still, I hope they keep and develop the original DeX mode, because I honestly like the idea of using my tablet as a laptop too.
Hey Thao, thank you for the review of this. I am going to be purchasing the S9 Ultra for my office and have been considering Dex as a way to make view content even easier for my clientele; but I have a few questions… I’m primarily an Apple user, and while I could technically use my existing iPad, I prefer to have everything native on a device, that aside, how many years can you see the S9 Ultra lasting and not becoming super sluggish? Secondly, regarding Dex, is it possible to mirror things through Bluetooth or cast to a TV at all? Admittedly I don’t know much about how it all works so I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you!!
I think a lot went on behind the scenes with the new dex. It's way more efficient and never gets hot now. With the new dexbook rumored- who knows what they're planning. The update update felt really intuitive to me. But, I use Chromebooks a lot.
If you connect to a Samsung TV you can extend the screen instead of just duplicating it. Only found this one mouth last night ! Works best if you are using peripherals (especially a mouse)
Would you answer a question? When you review Samsung tablets, are you working with the WiFi or 5G versions? I've watched many of your videos & I don't think I've heard you mention it. Thanks......

Finally some one say it out loud. Samsung doesn't want to create a laptop killer cause they also have a laptop to sell.
I agree.
Yh in the laptop scene there is definitely more competition then let’s say in the tablets sector
Great content! You're like the MBKHD for Samsung devices. Or is he the Thao for tech devices?
your content is criminally underrated. great video!
Nice. One of best DeX feature reviews on yt !! Keep up the good work !!
Nice to see someone else still on the S7+. 👍
I brought the s7 plus a month ago I was thinking about returning it since it's not supported
It's not about business, tablets and laptop are a very different product that can never be merged
I'm so bummed out that they focused more on UI redesign than on fixing the mayor problems Dex has. Maybe Thao can help us voice some concerns I know many users and even reviewers have:
But it is far from perfect.
agree with you
1:56 it's not random, look closely: If you "swing" it fast, Dex thinks you want to quickly arrange it so it's fixing up the overflow. If you hold it a bit longer, Dex thinks you want to precisely put it there on purpose (so it lets you do it)
you can set the dex to classic dex in the settings still under dex settings
For me to use dex, the loading time and the window mechanics were a deal killer, but the 2nd screen support is essential tho. I do like the window mechanics as they are closer to windows.
loadin time? it takes about a second to load into, much quicker than turning on your pc, what do you mean 2nd screen support? do you mean having dex running on 2 seperate screen bcz if so it will tank your performance you have to remember all this is running off your phone natively
@@dominickphoenix1568He means external monitor support.
It's not easy to find someone directly comparing them even for a brief moment so I'm glad you did mention it towards the end of the video!
looks cool but feels more like a stage manager mode and less like a dex mode where it feels like a laptop
What's a stage manager?
@davetech356 what apple has to make swapping tabs and resizing tabs seem better than base tablet software
Your tablet setup is awesome😮
Using extra monitor to use extended screen is a actually a practical feature for such dex mode... sad part they removed it
I noticed when you said it's unpredictable for the bringing the app back into space, what seems to be happening, is when you are "throwing" the app, it will bounce it back to the edge. When you move the app to a place, stop, and lift your finger, it stays there.
I'm glad they left the Classic mode in. I would riot if they take that away. The whole point of Dex for me is to get Android to as close a desktop replacement as possible. Otherwise I would just buy an iPad Pro.
Can't wait for your review of the new Galaxy Books 4
Just an excellent well put together video.
Which mic and audio equipment are you using? Sounds good.
I think I see what Samsung is doing. The new Dex is basically the desktop mode that was added to AOSP, with Samsung's added customisations.
Why don't you use dark mode? I wonder why anyone prefers light mode since dark mode is so much nicer for your eyes.
dark mode actually makes your eyes works harder
Dex is the main reason i got my tab and also a price😂. Was really excited with the one ui update but was really underwhelmed with what they added. Was really hoping for more. Maybe i just have not give it a chance but idk
same here
You can still use the old Dex.
@@ljacobs357 yeah, but what if samsung goes crazy one day and decides to take it off?
@@ljacobs357 i know i still use it. I was just expecting better improvements. What i would really like is a better experience when using a second monitor maybe something like Windows.
Explained exactly what I needed. I have a lapdock for my Fold5, and the lack of proper dual screen support means I won't bother with a Galaxy Tab.
1:58 i think you know because the first two times you did it quickly and the last time you did it slow and yeah that's how it's intended to work.
Bought a Tab S9 today just to find out now that they changed a key feature. Well played…
what i don't like with One UI 6 for the TabS9 is that they placed significant spaces on both left and right sides of the home widgets. I prefer my home space fully maximized.
I alost never use samsung dex bc the home screen isnt the same ,but know I'm really interested in it
So now when you add another screen to a tablet in Dex mode it just duplicates.
It's needed serious quality of life updates and hopefully this hits mobile in 2024.🙏🏾
Thanks Thao for another great video! Keep us Samsung people informed 📱
since i have a Tab S8+, the new Dex is perfect. it actually makes my tablet and the apps a whole lot easier to use. i would much rather have an app open up as a window first, then allow me to resize as i need. it just feels better.
Thaos definitely one of my most favourite tech TH-camrs! Based in Toronto and a Samsung fan :)
Went from the s7+ to the S9. Saw the new dex, immediately reverted to the old version.
Will you be doing a video on the new Galaxy Book 4?
I wonder if you can create an automatic modes and routines thing that switches between the classic and new dex modes when you connect or disconnect from an external screen.
Ever since MS Continuum, I've been a big fan of this desktop «model». Good video! 👍
The transition is real smooth. Nice work Samsung.
In fact, I have way too many different Samsung electronics.
this might be THE FIRST TIME I've EVER seen a device with the option to switch back to the "older version" of a specific thing.
which external monitor is that? looks dope...
Still, I hope they keep and develop the original DeX mode, because I honestly like the idea of using my tablet as a laptop too.
i like this kind of in-depth review. i subbed ! can't wait for more vids about Samsung dex and tablets
Good video. I thought I was losing my mind when I got the update lol😢
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Dex on my Xreal Air AR glasses. A productivity marriage made in heaven.
A tab user myself I completely ignore the new dex as I primarily use it wired in. Hope it never replaces the good old dex 🤞
I think I see where they're going with this. The new dex seems like an improved base to rebuild the old dex on, but it's not done yet.
Would you answer a question? When you review Samsung tablets, are you working with the WiFi or 5G versions? I've watched many of your videos & I don't think I've heard you mention it. Thanks......
I tried the new DeX, then went to the old version. As for a laptop replacement, I hated Windows 10 with a passion so bought a Tab S5 and used it for three years as my main machine.
Hi @Thao, thank you for this review, I really like it even I don't know how I came here after search and look a interview with Snowden lol (I know HOW, it was a "click" but I don't know why TH-cam suggest this video for me, lol.
The video is high quality, and shot from the right angle. Looks professional and (even) recording the video from "your" home (meaning the background we see ain't a studio) it is nice and clean so no distraction for what the reason and subject is why we watching and you have made. Sometimes we watching TH-cam videos and think why they not ashamed or aware of all the junk (for those who watching to see) in the background while recording. They don't know it is in fact a mirror of themself, lol.
The amount of information given in 8m (perfect time to keep us concentrated) is more than some others do in 30m. You focus on the most important features it have with the information for us by explaining them one by one and why they might be useful. Professional how you present yourself, looking beautiful and talking fast at the right speed with a lovely voice, loud and clear together make it a joy to watch and listening!
All together (with the camera-man of course) this is the kind of content that stands out from the rest! We understand it is NOT 8 minutes it take to shoot and make this video before put it online on your channel. 😘
they should make it an option for that startup, i kinda liked it
Samsung needs to do some built in app that forces apps that are not configured for mouse and keyboard to be able to be used with mouse and keyboard.
Great video... I didn't even know that Dex had changed and when I put it on the other day expecting it to flip into Dex mode I was like what in the world is this LOL😂😂😂 thank you for this video
Nice can you dim each open app?
Watching this video on my s9 ultra. Im in love
so basically we have 3 modes... dex, tablet and hybrid.
I hope they keep both old and new Dex. I like how the old desk looked more like desktop.
This new dex is a dream for someone like me who use tablet to study!, this is a dreamm come true experience if ever have this tablet
They made the Dex Mode more like the normal phone experience. especially the multitasking experience is now very similar to thier phones.
We can still use the old Dex. That's great!
Thank you for the tip on long pressing the dex icon to switch back to classic mode 😊
Thank you! I didn’t know reverting back was possible! The old DeX fits better my S9 Utra.
The hidden experimental Desktop Mode in Pixel devices kind of look like this. Maybe Samsung is aligning their mechanism with Google's one.
Thao Absolutely love your Videos and I appreciated your time and effort in making these Amazing Videos. Thanks so much enjoyed. ✌️💯
i agree with you i dont think enough people use dex which is why they havent really done much with it. I hope they use this new dex mode to replace the original tablet mode.
I'm sticking to the classic... Love that PC feels
